Navy ping locater picked up what could be signals from the jets black box recorders. Seth doane is in beijing, flight 370s destination city. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. The Prime Minister is here today promoting trade ties. He said back at home investigators in australia will continue trying to detect those pins from under the surface of the indian ocean until theyre absolutely certain that the batteries on those black boxes have run out. Once thats been done its our intention to then deploy the submersible, which will conduct a sonar search of the sea bed. And based on the sonar search attempt to get a visual on wreckage. Reporter abbott made headlines on friday here in china when he said he was, quote, very confident that the signals detected were from the black boxes on flights 370, but Angus Houston, the chief coordinator of the search urged caution. That was echoed by malaysias acting transport minister today as he toured a new terminal at a kuala lumpur airport. We got a signal that needs to be verified. I totally agree with Angus Houston that any lead and this might be one of the more cautiously optimistic leads that we have because the signals are similar to a black box. Reporter ten aircraft and 14 ships sh were taking part in the search today. While quite a bit of floating debris has been discovered so far nothing has been connected to the area of the search has been narrowed to just under 16,000 square miles. The underwater search zone is about 500 square miles, roughly the size of the city of los angeles. The next phase of that operation, that search will be to launch that underwater vehicle, the blue fin 21. That will move at a much slower pace, six times slower than that towed pinger locater that operates at about a walking pace. That could take weeks to search this area about the size of los angeles. Seth doane in beijing, thank you. Some rough cruises from coast to coast. Federal Health Officials will be waiting for the grandeur of the sea when it docks this morning. Pope francis is now the first leader of the Roman Catholic church to take personal responsibility for the sexual abuse of children by priests. Alan is in rome. Reporter good morning. The offthecuff remarks are being seen as an indication that the Catholic Church both understands and is paying attention to the toll that the clerical sex abuse scandal has exacted. An appreciation of the joy of childhood has been a hallmark of francis first year as pope. Speaking to a group of childrens rights workers, he said he felt compelled to personally ask for forgiveness for the damage done by priests who have sexually abused children. He pledged that the church would deal with the problem. I think we must be even stronger, francis said. You dont play around with the lives of children. Church law provides for sanctions against bishops who protect sexual predators but so far none have been disciplined for doing so. Francis intimated that would change. He pledged that the church will not take one step backward with how we will deal with this problem. Pope john paul ii said there was no place for abouzers in the priesthood priesthood. His successor expressed sorrow and regret and even went with them. Neither went as far as francis has done. But a Group Representing abuse survivors says its still not far enough. The church does everything they can to make it about money and policies and commissions. But what they forget about are kids like me who were 15 years old, 14 years old, sexually abused. My perpetrator got me pregnant and gave me a sexually transmitted disease and no one was there to help me. Reporter payments over the scandal have cost more than 3 billion in the u. S. Alone over the last eight years. Pope francis assumption of personal responsibility is an acknowledgement that that price includes more than money. Thank you. Tomorrow night, palm sunday on 60 minutes you can see what pope francis is like from president obama and those who know the pope best including some of his oldest friends. Now to south africa where olympic track star and accused track star Oscar Pistorius spent much of this week being grilled about the death of his girlfriend. The prosecutor addressed pistorius yesterday. I think that youre trying to cover up for lies. And im not convinced. Joining us now city nowor and cbs news legal analyst rikki rikki klieman. Good morning. We hear the prosecutor openly calling him a liar. How is he allowed to do that. Well we certainly would never be allowed to do it in the United States. You cannot as a prosecutor put yourself into the case and say i submit i accuse you, you are lying. Here, this prosecutor has pushed the envelope as far as anyone can, at some point even the judge said no more calling him a liar. Its demeaning. This prosecutor though we must say is marvelous. Hes ferocious. Hes relentless. You like him, dont you, rikki. Hes a bulldog. Hes known as a pit bull. I have not watched a cross examination i dont think ever that i have seen anything like this outside of a movie. It is one point after another after another to break the witness down. Hes obviously one of south africas top attorneys and you can see ywhy. What about the testimony . There is something so compelling about pistorius, hes crying and so eemotional. I think hes trying to get him to look like a narcissist. If you look in the United States we have the diagnostic and statistical manual where we can talk about mental diseases and defects. If you look at Narcissistic Personality Disorder what you would see is the picture of Oscar Pistorius as portrayed by this prosecutor someone who thinks only about himself, someone who has no empathy whatsoever, someone who takes no responsibility for his actions. By the way, reminds me of another case that i had covered many years ago when we think of how o. J. Simpson was portrayed. Im not responsible for anything. The police moved the evidence. I didnt do that. A gun went off. I didnt do that. Oh, a gun went off in a restaurant. I didnt do that. So the prosecutor is allowed to portray him in this way that he is all about him. He made some very emotional testimony this week. Is he helping his case do you think . Well, i dont know if he helps his case with a judge. Remember, we have one judge and two assessor. The assessor are professionals. They can wind up dealing with the verdict and overrule the judge. But what you have here with all of this emotion, it didnt just start here it started all the way back at the bail hearing, this vomiting in the bucket, these histrionics. The prosecution asks this question and we get a response. The prosecution says well why are you so emotional now . Listen to what pistorius answers. I lost the person that i cared b i dont know how people dont understand that. So there he is i lost the person i most cared about. Why dont people understand this . Why are you emotional now . The most emotional defendant we have ever watched on a witness stand, and you know its a little bizarre. What we see here is that we see the courtroom but we have this disembodied voice of pistorius. If i were his lawyer i would have had him on camera and he might be more empathetic. Its still fascinating. Thank you so much. The duke and dutchess of cambridge are on their sixth day of a visit. This morning kate toured a childrens hospice and later met Prince William and new zealands Prime Minister to formally open a National Sign ling centering. The royal couple leaves for australia wednesday. For golfers this weekend, all the action is at Augusta National where third round play begins this morning at the 2014 masters tournament. Bubba watson surged into the lead yesterday with birdies on five straight holes on the back nine to finish the day 4 under par. He sits atop a leaderboard that includes last years winner adam scott, whos four strokes back, and 54yearold fred couples who is five strokes back. Jeff foster is here with an update on all things masters. Good morning. Good morning. Is this Bubba Watsons tournament to lose . I think it is. He has a threestroke lead. Hes playing pretty well this year. He won the masters three years ago. Hes still the longest driver on the tour but hes a very interesting player. This is a guy who says hes never had a lesson and never will have a lesson. Theres that. Recently he hit the ball in the water three times in an event and withdrew. So you never know with bubba. Any time you harryear people talk about the masters, they talk about tiger woods. How big a deal is it that hes not playing . Its a big deal. Its like a novel without a protagonist. Hes the main guy. Like him or not, you always want him there. Hes an interesting person hes very kpet ive and it just makes it a better tournament when hes there. Hes always been there for 20 years. At the same time we have fred couples in the tournament and doing well as he seems to do quite often. 54 years old. It could be his year. No one in his 50s has ever won a major, its a great story. But weve seen this before. Hes been in the top ten at this point for five years in a row. Its amazing. He just loves this course hes very comfortable there. Usually when its saturday and sunday, he starts falling off. Hopefully that doesnt happen again. What about adam scott . He won last year but it seems like hes in striking distance. Adam scott is playing great, hes one of the best players in the world of the also very comfortable on this course. Even before winning last year he did very well here so he got off to a bad start yesterday and he rebounded very nicely. He had a couple of birdies on the back nine so you like to see that kind of resiliency especially on this course. I think the shocker is Phil Mickelson who for the first time in 17 years doesnt make the cut . Amazing. Phil does great on this course and to see him not make the cut is sort of unbelievable. But he just had a terrible hole. The 12th hole he hit it in the bunker and then another bunker. He looked like me out there. What about all of the talk is there a chance at this point that tiger could ever catch Jack Nicklaus . Its amazing too because a few years ago when he was in his early 30s, hes 38 now, it looked inevitable its a matter of how many he would win. But at this point its going to be tough. Jack nicklaus himself said he thinks he can do it. Hes got another ten years in him. Thats 40 majors he has to win five but he hasnt won a major in 23 tries. People still forget hes still number one. He won five times last year but i think what he would have to do is cut down his schedule and really focus on the his majors. Hes got his back and his knee. Hes been swinging a club since he was 2 and that takes a toll on the body. Jeff foster thanks so much. Thank you. You can watch live coverage of the masters play today and tomorrow right here on cbs. Time to show you some of this mornings headlines. Doctors had to amputate her right leg. A stranger in a store told mcwaters about her. She had nothing. And here i am in a city with all this outpouring of love and support and amazing care and heres this poor little girl and she has none of these options. When you saw her picture for the first time what did you think . She was two weeks out of the hospital. I dont even think she had a wheelchair at that point and she was smiling and i thought, wow, what a courageous girl. Mcwaters began following her recovery on facebook and later wanted to do more. She reached out to a local Prosthetics Company which quickly agreed to donate a prosthetic leg but salinas needed physical therapy so the couple raised money to bring her to Shriners Hospital for treatment. The first thing i said to her at the airport is now that youre here, youre going to be okay. I talked with her a lot about patience because that was the hardest thing for me to all of a sudden be so dependent on other people and wanted to just hurry up and get up and walk and explaining to her a lot about that, about the process and how long it will take to actually get up and walk and, of course because shes a child, shell probably run circles around me before i can even run circles. Salinas will continue to undergo therapy and she and mcwaters meet a few times each week. Their relationship has brought healing for both. I think it because good thing for me because i was busy doing something to help somebody else and not spending all my time this winter feeling sad because i was having difficulty getting outside or the challenges that i was facing, but it ended up being something more than i thought it would be because it became personal and we bonded with them and now theyre like family to us so we were very fortunate to have them in our life too. Ginning us are chief medical skront dr. Jon lapook and cbs contributor dr. Holly phillips. First up theres a treatment for paralysis that involves doctors zap zaping the spinal cord with electricity. Jon . Its not a cure but researchers say it could be a gamechange for people who are paralyzed. In 2010 Dustin Shillcox was in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. I wouldnt have any movement or walk again. Reporter but since implantation of a spinal cord stimulator over a year ago, he can move his legs and wiggle his toes. Aisle bring my legs back. That is amazing. Youre thinking movie. Yeah. So like when im not doing anything it just sits there and when i say up i tell it to move and i start to have control of my legs again. Its pretty exciting. Reporter spinal injuries disrupt nerve pathways that come from the brain and initiate movement. In this study researchers implanted an electrical stimulator at the base of the spine. When its turned on impulses appear that awaken the injured or dormant nerve path ways. Chilcox cant walk but has no feeling from the chest down. But researchers were surprised he could move his legs by thinking. What dr. Angeli heads the team. Chilcox is one of those. The technology was first tried three years ago when researchers working with the christopher and dana reaves foundation realized that rob summers, a paralyzed baseball player was able to move his legs. Whats it like for you . Its a miracle for me. When i can move my legs when im not supposed to. Jon this is so exciting. You mentioned there are four patients in all. What are they doing . Its amazing. All four can stand up and move their muscles. I just spoke with him, he was patient number one. He could move his legs but get them started by moving his upper body, not by thinking. A few weeks later hes in the lab and suddenly he can move his toe. We could never in a million years think you could reestablish the connection that was thought to be totally severed between the brain and the muscles. Its such a good piece but im curious. Whats the next step . It costs 400,000 in terms per person of the research cost. Theyre going to do another four and expand it to places throughout the country. Rob said this coming summer hes going to be asked to throw out the first pitch at donter stadium. Hes going to do it from the wheelchair but next summer standing up at the pushing mound. Tamiflu and others help those with flu. They looket add 24,000 patients. T included the drug decreased symptoms only slightly and did not reduce cases of pneumonia or the flu. This is the one the government stockpiles. What does this mean . In the u. S. Itself weve really invested a lot into stockpiling, about 1. 3 million in case of a big flu pandemic which could threaten a lot of lives. The drug decreases the length of symptoms from 7 days to 6. 3 days but it does not decrease the risk of death or complications like pneumonia from the flu. So its really calling into question how well prepared we are in case of a pandemic. And this drug has been around for a long time. Why is it taking so long to figure out whether it actually works . Really the understanding is that these drugs are faced for most people and they decrease the flu. Not necessarily that they stop pneumonia or death. The cdc is standing by recommend degree drugs theyre still food for treating the flu and theyre not going to change their minds yet but not everybody afrees with the new research. Speaking of that i imagine a lot of the drug manufacturers are not happy with it. Yeah. There was a roche said theres still a lot of deaths. The reason is weve never had the actual raw data to analyze. Now its publicly available and theres chance for people not the ones who wrote the paper to analyze it and come up with their own conclusions. April is National Distracted driving Awareness Month and this week the department of transportation launched a series of graphic ads warning against text behind the wheel. Another new study out this week from Massachusetts General Hospital has some fascinating findings on the importance of a Good Relationship with your doctor. Me and anthony have Good Relationships with who doctors we know. Tell us about the study. It make perfect sense. You have a better relationship with them. The question has been does it actually make a difference in terms of outcomes in terms of things you can measure. This is a review of studies. They looked at things that could be measured like high Blood Pressure or weight loss. Sure enough there was a small but significant increase in the positive outcomes from the interventions that made communication better empathy better. So that was kind of a good thing to have proof of. Holly hourk does one then maximize their relationship with a doctor to get these kind of benefits. There are things we think about. Communicate openly. But something thats very important, like most relationships, the more time you spent e spend with that person, the closer you become. So to the best that you can, if you can see the same doctor over and over over the period of years, that really fosters the best relationship you can get. I know its not easy especially in primary care. Each time you go in you might see a different one. If youre scheduling a yearly physical, try to see the same doctor every time and that will improve the relationship. Finally this week lots of grandmothers will tell you that spending time with their grandchildren is one of lifes great pleasures but it turns out that taking care of grandkids helps post menopausal women reduce their chances of alzheimers. Tuesday is april 15th and that of course, means tax day. The first family already paid up. The white house report the obamas earned 481,000 paying 98,000 in income taxes. Its an effective tax rate 206 helped by the fact they dough naded around 59,000 to charity. Also samesex couples now married can file joint federal returns. We now take a look at the complexity of the tax system. Kenneth, good morning. Good morning. Always pleasure. Maybe less a pleasure. Youre the only person to me who can make taxes interesting. Let me start with the history. I was surprised to see. People forget this starts with the civil war. Well it really starts way before that if we think about the beginning of American History and taxes being tied in with the revolution, all that resistance to taxes on stamps and sugar back there in the 1770s so it goes back that far. 200 years ago George Washington led troops into the field, the first and only time the president led troops to put down a tax rebellion, the whiskey rebel rebellion. Weve been fighting about this for a long time. The civil war was the first. There have always been taxes and tariffs paid on things coming in or going out of the 1862 to pay f the war, signs the first income tax. I hate to sea it 3 was the bottom, 5 was the top. Ouch. I want to go back to that date. How did we go to that . It was first introduced on march 1st. Then they moved it back to march 15th. And then in 1955 to april 15th. The ostensible reason was the tax system was getting big, there were more returns to deal with and the irs needed more time to deal with those returns. Some people have suggested its a way for the government to hold onto refunds a month longer keeping that interest in the Federal Reserve rather than in your bank account. Right. When did this actually become part of our constitution though . The income tax was declared unconstitutional back in 1894 and they fought for about 15 years, another 15 years before it became part of the constitution under constitutional amendment in 1913. The world had changed. America was now a global power. It need add much more reliable dependable source of income and after a long long fight, the income tax was made part of our constitution. So theres been resistant to this all along. Its always been dont tax him, dont tax me dont tax the man behind the tree. Its been seemingly the best people to pay. We talk about tacking the rich and the whole in equality. The latest captain america earn add recordbreaking 92 million in its first weekend. Part of the reason for captain americas success was imax 3d. To see it on the big screen with glasses moviegoers paid about three times more. It started in the 70s when museums started showing documentaries. Then the hollywood directors came running eager for a chance to show more of it. Over the course 406 years imax has transformed from documentaries about space to movies with hollywood stars. Nearly 400 imax theaters have been built since 2008 with a growing market in china. Joining us now is imax ceo richard. Good morn zbhoogd morning. Why is it something that they want to see . Its the movies in general. Its the increased economic buying power of the middle class. China if you went back ten years ago, people were struggling and now they have extra disposable income. There hasnt been this huge entertainment facility built. Theres great appetite for films. Sit attract as lot of Chinese People to the movies. You have 170 theaters in china already. Youre going to open another 230 more . At least. We have them under contract. Whats going on there is the number of screens is growing at this incredible pace and i think china will probably pass the u. S. In the number of screens by around 2020. And be your biggest market . Oh, it will be the biggest market. It seems like in the United States fewer and fewer people are going to the movie theaters. Are you guys trying to increase attendance stateside or are you looking at the overseas market . It is a Growth Market for us. 13 was a gross year over 12. If you look at the Summer Season coming up right now with things like godzilla and spiderman this will be a good Summer Season. I think it goes up and down. The problem in the u. S. Is one of the opportunities for imax which is bigger screen in the house, gaming spending time your honor computers. So you have to offer people something compelling to get off the couch goonld to the movies. Thats part of what gives them it. Thats a great question. I think a lot of the Directors Think so. Its no coincidence. People like chris nolan, james cram ron michael bay. I think people doing the big action, the visual spectacles are saying i want it in imax and thats also been a key component to our growth. 3d has been enormously popular overseas but less so here. Why is that . Im not sure why it is. I suspect it has something to do with heritage. I think in particular films have been around for so long people got used to seeing them in 2d that i think they go to 3d if its something special. I think in developing countries in particular like russia china, korea, south america, they dont have the way theyre used to seeing the movie and e think seeing it in 3d is the way. They wanted it in 3d. Yeah. Some movies in china cha ranked so they can see them in china in 3 3d. I want to ask you about the deal you finalized with disney. The avengers and the warriors. Those are names people can associate with. Do you think that will build . We wanted the means in the last several years. With did almost all of the harry potter series. Batman spiderman, but we did them more as a one off basis. We conceive of it as a longer term deal. We had arrangements with Warner Brothers ore a number of years. We have one right now with pair month, so i think it will be beneficial. Thanks for joining us this morning. Thank you so much. Up next the stars align for a major new documentary on Climate Change. Doctor is a Senior Scientist and a correspondent for this documentary southeast. Good morning. Good morning to you. Why did you think celebrity was important for this topic . I think the key thing was celebrities could keep the conversation going. People are going to tune in because they know a familiar face. But ultimately these stories are about real people people who are your neighbors, people who you live around and i think thats whats going to power the show. Celebrities important. Thats not the only part of it. What are you trying to start with this series . Were trying to start a global conversation beyond the point of somethings going to happen in the future in some disstablts land. One thing i found is you were surprised how fast Climate Change actually happened. I think that was the biggest shocker for me when i went to Christmas Island and the andes. I realized as a scientist i thought it wul be much more gradual. Its ten times as fast. You guys went to some really rough places. I would imagine just shooting this was very difficult. It was unbelievable. They had multi. Teams from around the world. Harrison ford flying jet aircraft and going into the in dough nisha and they sent me to a small island in the mid of the pacific and up to 20,000 feet in the andes. This one came the closest to getting me killed quite literally. You talk about how quickly Climate Change can happen. How quickly can it unhappen, if we could . Look. Weve come across the point where were going to have to live with it. Humans have to start adapting. If we stop emissions right knew we will still experience some heating of the planet but it can get much much worse if we continue the path were on. So it cant unhappen but we can sure as hello reduce the impact of it over the long run. As somebody who studied climate for most of your life after doing this documentary, seeing what you see now, how worried are you for the environment . You know, i never felt it in my bones. I felt like i was telling someone elses story. I went on letterman and he hammered me. It surprised me. I thought i had it in my bones. Going on this journey allowed me to get personal with it. We truly are living in dangerous times. Thank you very much. Its on showtime. Coming up a gadget that charges your cell phone while you walk and a portable gadget that attaches to your guitar.
