Hell talk about the release of the lost album the man in black. The chef who learned how to cook from the queen of mexican food. Plus wait till you hear st. Paul and the broken bones and their television debut. Great band. But we begin with new debris found in the search for that missing malaysian aircraft. A new shift lead to the discovery now closer to the australian coast. Holly williams is in perth, australia, the nerve center looking to find the missing boeing 777. Good morning, holly. Whats the latest. Reporter good morning. The weather has taken a turn for the worst which could slow down the search for the Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Its been three weeks since the plane mysteriously disappeared but not a single piece of wreckage has been discovered. For ten days now a fleet of search planes has been combing the seas of the southern indian ocean hunting for fragments of flight 370. We should not underestimate the difficulty of this work. It is an extraordinarily remote location. These are inhospitable seas its an inaccessible place, we are trying to find small bits of wreckage in a vast ocean, and while we are trying everything we have at it the task goes on. Reporter twice this week the planes were grounded by high winds and rough seas in the search area 1,500 miles off australias west coast. Even in good weather radar proved ineffective, so they relied on the human eye to spot debris. When we flew with the crew of this new zealand p30 ryan aircraft we found something, hopeful it might be part of the wreckage from the malaysia jet airliner. Its affecting a lot of people so definitely, you know, to come out and put closure on it would be awesome. Reporter the blue object later turned out to be marine life, probably a killer whale. On thursday new images from japanese and thai satellite show large objects floating in the ocean, some more than 50 feet long. That sparked hopes that the wreckage would soon be found but on friday came the frustrating news that the search crews had been looking in the wrong place. Investigators analyzing the flight data decided the plane had probably crashed 700 miles northeast of where theyd originally thought. This is the most confused contradictory, frustrating search investigation ive ever come across. Mind you, its most bizarre. No ones lost a plane like this in the modern era. Reporter theyll undergo a search today. The plan now is to find the flight black boxes or flight recorders to find out what could have gone wrong. Joining us now is Mark Rosenker former chairman of the National Transportation safety board and cbs news aviation analyst. Good morning. Good morning, anthony good morning, vinita. We keep meeting like this every weekend unfortunately mark. Are the searches in the right place now . I hope so but im cautiously optimistic. Weve begun a Serious Investigation and search and recovery. Weve not been able to touch, feel identify validate anything from this aircraft. Until we do that, we dont know where this aircraft is and we have to use our best science and analysis to be looking where it is. Perhaps this is the spot. When you look at the map you get a clear sense that obviously this new area is close to land. Does that make it easier for investigators . It certainly does. They dont have to fly as far. They can stay on the point much longer than they were, but still were in a very difficult and challenging part of the world and as a result of that this is going to be a very long very costly and unfortunately a very frustrating investigation thus far. What does this shift tell us if anything about what happened . We know that the aircraft based on the science and analysis that were getting from both the data coming from the satellite and also the radar that this aircraft was moving faster than they anticipated it was at the original point back down there 700 miles south of where we are right now. So basically if its moving faster its burning more fuel and thats why they think the search area could be different . Thats exactly why theyre searching where they are right now. Weve got lots of things that appear to be something in the sea. Weve got lots of aircraft out there putting eyes on it taking photographs of it. We were hoping to get analysis telling us exactly what we god but unfortunately that hasnt come to light yet. They say if any wreckage is found, it has to go back to australia. Why is that . I think that makes good sense. It needs a consolidation point. That point is australia. It will enable us to put the pieces back together to do a forensic investigation. Frankly the australians are good at this. I know they were when i worked for the ntsb. I know when the black box is under water we lose the signal. Certainly the pinging of the black boxes, we would like to have an area where we could begin to do that search right now, but im more concerned right now of validating that were in the right place. Right. Then the work will be done by the oceanographers and the climbing to gra fehrs and those who have to show us where the spot was and the original point of people in los angeles are assessing the damage this morning after a magnitude 5 earthquake struck. There were dozens of aftershocks. The earthquake broke water mains, gas line cut power to thousands of customers and knocked bottles and dishes off shelves. The people in this car suffered injuries after a rockslide knocked this car on to its roof. They felt the tremer in the ballpark. A little tremor in the ballpark. Im not sure if the folks felt it but we felt it in press row. A tremor an only that thank goodness. More aftershocks could occur over the next several days. Smoke and flames lit up the sky in des moines when a fire tore through an old building that was under construction. Parts of it collapsed. There was no injuries wu bier facials cleared sidewalks and evacuated connecting buildings in downtown. The building attracted thousands of businesses in. We shift the heavy rain now. John blackstone is in washington with the latest president good morning, john. Reporter good morning. Well, search officials here are now acknowledging that a week after this landslide theres little chance that anyone could have survived under the mud and wreckage. For the people in this valley this has been a week of grieving and loss. What is now called tim pact zone was until a week ago, the community of oso, population of 180. When the landslide hit, this man was sitting in his recliner. Noise started build and building, i looked over my shoulder and the trees were windmill windmilling. Than no seconds later, this huge crash. I had my legs out in my recliner like this. A huge crash that was unbelievably loud. These volunteer firefighters were among the first to reach the scene. Weve seen a lot of things in the four years that weve been doing this up here but nothing could ever make you imagine that you were ever going to see the things that weve seen since saturday morning. Take a square mile of land scoop it all up at least 40 feet deep pile on trees rocks, everything put it into a blender, blend it until its chopped out and pour it on the ground. Thats what we were in. It was things that i never want to see again reporter is search the personal that they know some of those that are missing. Alan worked with them on their farm. Deanna is alans mother. He was laughing when he was young. He was with his fiancee when the landslide struck. I could picture them in the kitchen. I dont know what hit them and thats how im picturing it. Reporter mack mcfearson managed to dig himself out but linda, his wife of 46 years was killed. She was the cartwheel. She made it all go around. Reporter the week ahead is likely to be no easier than the week that has just passed here and conditions for searchers could just get worse. This rain is forecast to last for most of the week. John blackstone in washington thank you. Russian president and president obama have spoken again about the crisis in ukraine. They talked about what russias plans are for ukraine. In the kremlins account of the conversation that the white house described as frank and direct putin raised concerns about what he described as extremists in ukraine. President obama demanded putin pull back the tens of thousands of combat ready Russian Troops who are on ukraines border. He spoke with scott pelley in rome. Youve seen a range of troops massing along that border under the guise of military exercises. But these are not what russia would normally be doing. It may simply be an effort to intimidate ukraine or it may be that theyve got additional plans. In either case what we need right now to resolve and deescalate the situation would be for russia to move back those troops and to begin negotiations directly with the Ukrainian Government and the international community. What is Vladimir Putin after . If you take him at his word can you . Well on this i think hes been willing to show a deeply held grievance about what he considers tore the loss of the soviet union. I think theres a strong sense of russian nationalism and a sense that somehow the west has taken advantage of russia in the past and that he wants to in some fashion, reverse that or make up for that. The president is on his way back to the United States from saudi arabia where he met with the countrys leader. The deadline for signing up for Health Care Insurance under obamacare is set for monday. But it will be extended for some americans. Here to help us explain what that means is louise. Good morning to you. Thanks for having me. The announcement that the extension is being extended. Are there still problems with the website . Well federal officials have likened the official to people still being in line on election day waiting for the polls to close. They said the people in that situation will be allowed to continue and finish their applications even after march 31st has passed at midnight. Those are the people who will be able to take advantage of the extension. Essentially though its based on an honor system. People coming to the site after march. 1st will be told that its closed. But if they would like to carry on because they began before theyre allowed to continue. So if you dont sign up by the 31st are you going to be penalized in some way . The penalty has shifted around a little bit as well. The standard has been that if you had signed up by march 31st for coverage that might not take effect for another month, you wouldnt be sukt to the penalty. And as long as you were trying to sign up by march 31st some type of documentation might be required for that that will be sufficient to avoid the penalty which applies to most americans, starts at 90. But there are quite a few exception to that too. We keep hearing the 6 Million People. Why is that number so significant . Well its a hugely symbolic victory for the administration. Its what the Budget Office has had projected that the signup numbers would be for 2014. So to go from reports that on the first day only 6 people made it through, to 6 million over six months u suggests theyve been able to turn around the problems on the website to make it functionablel for the people. Paying the first premium is the first step. Thats for insurer es to say. But that actually defines enrollment. Now to college basketball. The ncaa tournament gets down to the elite eight this weekend. Last nights action the wildcats turn things around in the game to declare victory over louisville. Eel play second seeds michigan tomorrow. Connecticut was a surprise winner against iowa state. Theyll square off against number four Michigan State in the east regional final tomorrow. Here to talk about what weve seen and what to expect is cbs Sports College basketball insider john. I know louisville was your pick for all of this. You had to bring that up. I dont know that the interview is getting off to the right start. I dont think anybody has grasped the magnitude. They played the team that has been in back to back fours. This was at the football stadium and the wildcats played the majority of the game with five freshmen on the floor. Theres still a cinderella in the game. Dayton won again. Warren buffet is sleeping pretty well dow. Dayton theyve ignited an unbelievable turn around. Out of all of the teams playing right now the ncaa tournament dayton is by far the deepest player. They have nine players averaging 11 1 2 minutes per game. In the elite eight now, what are the games you want to be watching . Kentucky and michigan is one tomorrow were arizona and wisconsin is an interesting showdown. Its a great contrast in styles. But you also have two of the coaches, bo ryan and sean miller who are elite coaches in the final four but they havent gotten to the final four. So today one of those coaches will get to the most hall lowed showcase in the sport. Coaches have always told me that the game to get to the final four is the most pressure packed four because it sets you apart from your pierce. So with louisville gone who do you like now . Thats a tough question. I will admit that the florida team weve seen this year doesnt have the pro potential of Billy Donovans teams that won backtoback championships. But the 0 cohesiveness willing to sacrifice and the balance is reminiscent of that team. Florida has yet to lose a game yet. Im just curious, what about the manhattan coach. The coach that was supposed to go to south florida for 6 million. He loses it all because he didnt have a degree. When you think about the dynamics of this whole thing, here is somebody who was matched up against his mentor three days later he gets the break of a lifetime has a 6 Million Contract in his hand and less than 24 hours of agreeing to the terms on the job, it turns out he didnt have a degree from kentucky. It was an amazing roller coaster. You can see every moment of the action here on cbs. And an tbs. Log on to cbs sports. Com. Tomorrow morning on face the nation should College Athletes be paid . After the luggage was placed on the conveyer before it went into the plane, they would just unzip, reach in and take whatever valuable property they could find whether it was jewelry, ipads, expensive clothing. Once they stole these items, what would they do with it . They would sell it on ebay. Baggage theft increased last year by 37 . Jim axelrod looked into the new numbers. Reporter the cdc says the findings dont mean more children are developing it. It means more cases are being discovered due to heightened awareness. Michael rosenoff with the Advocacy GroupAutism Speaks says this study looked at 8yearolds from 11 sites across the country. The approach they use is based on medical and service records. Thats why we believe part of the prevalence is due to better detection. Better records leads to higher prevalence. Reporter the average age of the diagnosis in the United States is 4 1 2. Thats too late says this couple. Their twin 11 krrlds michael and kevin were diagnosed at 20 months. We were told ten years ago they would probably never speak, would never laugh or have friends or experience most of life. You guys share the room. Yeah. How does that work out . Not so very well. Reporter and as for kevin now now what does your shirt say . Whos awesome . Im awesome. Are you awesome . Yes. What was the key . For two years they had an hour each a week of therapy in the house. It opens a whole new world of possibilities for them. So, holly, im curious. Why is it that these numbers is it possible that were overdiagnosing autism . Thats such an important question to ask really because we know that cases of autism were detecting much better and much earlier, but that doesnt mean were overdiagnosing autism. Actually for this study, the cdc looked very carefully at each case that they included and really made sure that each case met the standard definitions of autism or autism spectrum disorder. So they believe that each of these diagnosis is accurate. I thought it was interesting that boys are fuehrer times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. Why do you think that is . I wish we knew the bottom line answer to. What we do know is boys may be more specifically linked to abnormalities that may be linked to autism. What they are and how they behave, thats really an area of Intense Research right now. Some of the procedures may be due to being perform outside the hospital as well as plans to control infection. A new report in st. Louis reports that as half as many of all case of Breast Cancer might be preventable. Sounds like there are lifestyle factors that come into play. Its really very very important. We hear so much about Breast Cancer and were all so fearful but i actually find it very reassuring there are things we can do to lower our risks and the single most is to exercise. The earlier you start, the better, but its never too late to start. Also focus on a plantbased diet, fruits vegetables whole grains, less meat and dairy is actually a good thing and lower fat foods. Control your weight. Control it especially as long as you can especially later in life and control your intake of alcohol. I thought it was interesting they say the first pregnancy in women is very important. Thats why these factors, changing your lifestyle, the earlier you start, the better. David, there are drugs out there to prevent high risk Breast Cancer and some are controversial. Tell me about that. Theyre not controversial. Baby aspirin prevents Breast Cancer but two others have a dramatic decrease in normal and high risk women. What should a woman whats the conversation she should be having with her doctor. Say, listen what is my percent chance of having breast can serks what are the side effects and strategy and make the right decision for you. Theres no one right answer. Its based on your value system. If youre an ordinary person its hard to assess your risks. Thats the role of the doctor to educate you and together make the right decision. Finally if you ever wanted to compare apples to oranges, theres now an app nar. Google has created a search tool that gives side by side nutritional information for hundreds of foods. They compare foods in a single step but suggests recipes that use the ingredients search. This is pretty cool. I love this. My favorite search is of course, kale versus bacon. Look at those numbers. I started in the mail room for an Advertising Agency in detroit after i graduated from college and kind of worked my way for new york worked for some big agencies. That was the starting point for my career. I read that you and the late dawn don simpson when you were pinching movies should be able to pitch it in three words. It would be like bar terndtendbartender, caribbean, tree roots well thats not three words. My partner don would say you can sell a story in two sentences. Executives are so busy. They have media outside the door waiting. If you can tell the story in two sentences youve got a good shot of getting movie going. This is the thing. Reading the book people say such lovely things about you. It makes me wish i was an actress. People say youre the greatest produce never the business, you care about the people in the business. Johnny depp wrote the forward for you and called you a true friend and confident. The studio didnt want him. You did. What was it you see . Hes an amazing actor. Hes just phenomenal. Coming up this half hour inside the investigation of Malaysia Airlines 370. When it comes to solving aramistrys, ntsb experts are the best in the world, and well show you why. Then are you looking for somewhere special to go for vacation this year . Weve got outside magazines best destinations for 2014. We havent seen a biblical epic like noah in years. First the hunt for the Malaysia Flight 370. Theyre searching closer to the australian coast. Holly williams is in perth, australia, in an effort to find the plane. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The search efforts have begun after hours of scouring the seas. The weather has taken a turn for the worse which could slow down a search for Malaysia Flight 370. Yesterday came the frustrating news that they had been looking in the wrong place. Investigators and the planes maker boeing took another look at flight data and decide thad the plane went down 700 miles northeast of where theyd previously thought. A chinese crew reported seeing three objects of interest in the new search area today, one red, one white, and one orange, though its still not confirmed they are debris from the jetliner. The search teams are racing to find the planes black boxes or flight recorders which could finally explain what went wrong. Anthony and vinita. Holly williams in perth, australia. Thank you. If those black boxes are discovered its quite a process to preserve the data inside. Theyre deeply involved in the hunt for flight 370 and the agency gave our cameras an unprecedented look inside the labs that decode black boxes when they are recovered. Jeff pegues has that story. Reporter if the black boxes found in the southern indian ocean, the pinging sound from a beacon like this one may turn out to be the reason why, but investigators at ntsb headquarters are really after whats inside this hard orange shell, the memory board of the cockpit voice and flight data recorders. Its about the size of some smartphones, but unlike your phone, its almost indestructible. Not even the crusted saltwater could damage it beyond repair. Dr. Joe collie is the director of research and engineering. We can and often do get right down to the damaged memory chips themselves repairing those chips, and getting data out. Even if a chip is damaged because the data jumps from chip to chip the ntsb says they can preserve the recording. Once its plugged into a power source, the memory is downloaded into a computer. Whats revealed are four different audio channels from the cockpit including pilot and copilot conversations and interaction with air traffic control. The 25 hours of flight data can be turned into realtime animations which show the moments before the crash and even the planes previous flights. We convert that data now into the various parameters that are recorded. For instance altitude heading, air speed. The clock starts ticking as soon as the engineers at ntsb get a box. The goal is to get the memory board and process the data within 24 hours so investigators have at their fingertips the most vital aspects of the accident. Jeff pegues, cbs news washington. A moderate earthquake struck los angeles last night rattling nerves and shelves. It was felt 20 miles southeast of l. A. There arent any reports of major damage this morning but the quest broke water mains and gas lines, cut power to thousands of people and made a mess of homes and storms. The quake caused the rock slide that knocked a car on its roof causing my yore injuries to the people inside. Dozens of aftershocks followed the main quake including one held by the News Conference of the u. S. Geological service. The Early Warning system of four seconds and now were having an aftershock. Estimated magnitude right. 2. 6. And the intensity is 1, which is basically no shaking and obviously we didnt shake. Experts warn that more aftershocks could occur over the next several days but are likely to weaken in intensity. Firefighters in des moines are extinguishing a fire that destroyed a downtown building that lit up the night sky this morning. The 18th Century Building was being remodeled when the fire broke out. Part of it collapsed. There were no injuries but firefighters blocked sidewalks. Some buildings sustained damage and the threeblock area surrounding the fire remained cordon off. The fire is still under investigation. In washington, the rain is hampering searches after the deadly mudslide. John blackstone is in washington with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony and vinita. The governor of Washington State is asking people to observe a moment of silence at 10 30 this morning. It will be exactly a week after the landslide and after a week the search has become no easier. In fact, it may have become more difficult for searchers. Its certainly taken an emotional toll. One volunteer fireman i spoke with told me he cried after he found a body and the continuing rain is adding to the continued difficulty of working in the debris field. Now, this is a mess. The debris field is a mess. When this mountain collapsed, it brought down 15 million cubic yards of mud. Thats now mixed with the wreckage of nearly 50 homes. Add that to huge trees that were swept off the mountains. You start to understand the conditions that these search abouterers are working in. To put it simply its a big mess. It covers an entire square mile and there are plenty of dangers. Searchers have describes to me this is not like working in a building thats collapsed where there may be voids and empty spaces where someone may survive. Here it seems mud and water has filled everything. Its a challenge enough for the trained search and rescue teams, but family members of those who are missing are also being allowed in to help with to help with the search. Now, at the end of this difficult week if theres one thing thats making people here feel any better its the support that is coming from this entire community. You know, ive asked some people here that given the danger of landslides might they consider moving from this valley and theyve all said to me no they love this place and they love the people who live here. Anthony, vinita . John blackstone in darrington, washington this morning. Thank you. That record never came out and the master tapes disappeared for 30 years. Then the man in blacks son John Carter Cash found the recordings in a storage vault. The new cd out among the stars includes 12 of those unreleased songs. They arrive just in store this week. John carter cash is here this morning. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. Good to be here. You were about 14 . Yeah. In 84 i would have been 14. Ten of the 12 songs were done. I remember actually being in the studio for some of the recordings. I remember being there when Weiland Jennings w en he by and spontaneously recorded this song movin on. I remember being there for part of it but it was a surprise when suddenly i reencountered the tapes. Anthony said you found it in a storage vault. Anthony said you said your parents were pack rats. Yeah. Were they rough cuts or what was the condition . No. They were finished masters in that the tracking was done for the original songs, but my parents never threw anything away. All through their time together they put things into a Storage Facility includes hundreds of audio tapes and things they recorded through the years whether it would be taped copies or whatnot. But, yeah there was like a camels saddle in there, all Different Things you wouldnt expect, wax figurines of the president s and what not. But this great treasure trove of music and the love that they offered into the spirit through the years was there, but we took all the tapes and shipped them to new york and they transferred it all to digital. So weve been going through and trying to decipher exactly what is right for release, you know, what would they want the world to hear that perhaps hadnt been heard yet. Why were these songs not released by colombia back in the 80s . Well, johnny cash if the early 80s did not fit into the mold of what was happening then. They broke the mode when they mademy dad, i mean theres no doubt, you know. But it was the countrypolitan area and you couldnt just put johnny cash in there. He didnt really fit. So Columbia Records was actually losing interest in my dad because he wasnt what was happening at the time and they literally shelved this record and it wasnt long after that that they dropped him. But now we look back and its a full picture. Right. The view of the art. Well, his voice is really strong in this record. In many ways its kind of peak johnny cash. It really is. He sounds as good in this record as he ever was. He was clear, he was spoken. You know he was in love with his wife. His family life was really good as opposed to a couple of years before. Hed had some rough years in the early 80s but in 84 when the majority of this record was done, he was my best friend. I got to hang out with my dad again, hang out with my best friend once again. You and your bandmates had to do a little bit of work to add to the music but im curious, what was your emotion the first time you heard the songs since you had been there for some of the recordings . Yeah. It was a connection back into my heart, i mean it really was, because, you know i remembered my mother and father i remembered the love that they had for the song baby ride easy. It was so energetic and powerful. They believed that could possibly be a hit for them at the time. If i could call them on the phone and say, hey, listen baby ride easy is on the radio, theyd be really excited. Theres one other song thats quite powerful on the record i came to believe, which is sort of an echo of him coming out of that dark period that you referred to, isnt it sth. Yeah it is. He wrote it while he was in the Betty Ford Center i came to believe in a power much higher than i and its directly in connection with the program he was working in at the time and the fact he had turned his life around completely and offered his life completely. Its a personal song, beautiful. It was recorded later during his years when he was doing the american recording series, so this is the first recording of it and its never been heard. John carter cash, im sure your parents would be very proud of you today. I hope we get more of this archive. Are we . Theres more, but were very careful about what is released. We want to be focused and pick the right thing. We want too Say Something unique thats never been said or if its been said before in a way it hasnt been previously you know. But, yes there is more music, and if its right and the right time, its going to come out. Anthony will test it for you. There you go, there you go. Thank you, John Carter Cash. All right, guys. You have to put on your big boy pants for this one. Its a little violent. I told my mom, forget this one go. To church and ill tell you about it. If youre ooh guy that likes to shoot em up actionpacked, youre a guy who said i want to do this movie . Absolutely. Im an actor. I have many characters who live inside my head. I always wanted to do a military role, so this was my shot at that. It was davidary and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was a nobrainer. I wanted to do it. You trained. Didnt you go true tlaning . I thought that was interesting. Sure did. With david everything is about authenticity authenticity. He did training day and s. W. A. T. That right. He sent us to s. W. A. T. School. And thats how this happened. Thats how this happened. Im going to say yes. But it was a lot of fun. Its like disneyland for dudes, you know. Disneyland for dudes. Youre in there, but one of the Toughest Team members was the girl mira. She was fantastic. He had us sparring each other, actors sparring each other in full head gear. Were you reluctant to spar with her . Absolutely. Im from the south. Youre not going to hit a girl. But it was really about not getting hit. She was so fast and amazing. What was it like working with Arnold Schwarzenegger . I mean im assuming hes something of a hero. Yes. I mean ive got three brothers we grew up watching everything arnold ever did, so for us it was, you know, amazing to work with him. For many of us it felt like the winter wouldnt end. It was one storm after another. If you want a quick reminder, just take a look at this. It is time lapsed video put together by nasa. It shows one of the hardest hit places the eastern u. S. As it battered one by one powerful weather system. This was taken from january 1st through march 24th. I have some those pics in my scrapbook. Welcome to cbs this morning saturday. Speaking of weather, we begin this hour with one of the best known tales of the bibles book of genesis, the story of how all living things were punished by a flood directed by darren aronofsky. This new even pick stars Russell Crowe, noah. I guess we get to start over too. You and me, its a better world. We have to build. The great flood is coming. The waters of the heavens will meet the waters of the earth. We build a vessel and survive the storm. We build an ark. Were pleased now to welcome darren aronofsky. Good morning to you. Good morning to both of you. We both had a chance to see the movie. Its absolutely beautiful even though its a little dark. I read it started with a poem when you were in the 7th grade. Mrs. Freed said everyplace take up a pen. Its was kind of the first moment you know say myself possibly as a storyteller and so the path began. That teacher has a small role in the film . As it comes together i decided to reach out to her. Both my parents were retired school teachers. Two of them were retired. I sent her an email. She came up and i put her in a scene with russell krone, a one eyed eyed crohn. You promised Russell Crowe something. Most people when they think of noah they think of very big expectations. I said noah youll never be wearing a robe standing on a houseboat with two big giraffes sticking up behind you. For me as a kid when i read the original story i didnt sympathize with noah. I was wondering about the people left behind. I was wondering if i would be good enough to be on the show. Everyone was wiped out. Theres been a lot of talk about how accurate it is. You said this is the least biblical biblical movie ever made. Yeah ho. How did you walk that fine line knowing that audiences might be upset and others might get bored . When i was saying biblical biblical i meant i love Ten Commandments but its been 50 years. We wanted to do something really new, really fresh. For nonbelievers its great action film with a great family drama but theres actually nothing in the film that contradicts the bible. What we did is because its only four chapters long we were incredibly truthful to every single word thats in there and try to breathe life into it and bring it to life for 21st century audiences. This is a 120 Million Dollar film. Maybe. Depends on whos counting. Thats kind of breathtaking. Youre known as a director who likes control. A friend said when you take 130 million, dont take it because it wont be yours. It didnt turn out that way. It worked out fine. I had great partners with paramount and regency. You did fight over the find cut, didnt you . I mean there was a lot of publicity on that but theres not a film in the history of film making where theres not a discussion. When i made my first film a wreck kwee um for a dream, there was a lot of discussion who through in 15 grand in whats going to be in, whats going go be out. Whats nice is theyre incredible filmmakers and theyve done this very many times and they can be very helpful. You shot this in iceland against nudges from others on where it could be shot. How did you get around animals. I know youre a big animal lover an didnt want any issues with that. Same as the planet of the apes, its proven you can make creatures come to life. To take exotic animals and put them on set its pretty unethical but its also because we wanted to capture the vast a ray of the Animal Kingdom. The Animal Kingdom is amazing in its variety and the only way to do that would be with digital work. I think of you as a pretty intense filmmaker, and youve said im in pain the whole time. Oh, yeah yeah. Shooting editing. Why is that . Well, because youre always pushing yourself. You know the thing about filmmaking is you have a limited amount of time and its just a magic amount of time and you really want to make the most as possible, so youre always yearning to do better. I cant say its always pain. Loi v the process. I love working with actors but youre pushing yourself office. I guess its pain in the same way i imagine if youre a marathon runner youre always trying to get an extra couple of sessions off a mile. Youre like building noahs ark. Absolutely. Thank you for coming on. Thanks for having me. That was great. Now a final look for the weather for your weekend. Right in front of you you have a dish thats done with corn and a little bit of cheese and we have this dish thats sort of a mexicanstyle risotto if you will. And this is a very famous sort of dish with a pumpkin seed mollet. And then my moms favorite creamy rice. My mom had a restaurant here in new york for 25 years in midtown, and that was one of the things that people asked for all the time. I love how you describe how cooking is such a part of your culture. Yeah. And how integrated it was from a very early age. Did you always know you wanted to be a chef then . You know what . I wish i could tell you thats one of the things i always wanted to do. The kitchen provides three things that i think are essential for every young person. Structure, discipline, and mentoring, and i received those in the kitchen. It with us very impactful as a young person and then i just got bit by the bug. Right. When did you feel the bug bite . I think about 16 you know. I worked with chef paul prudham in new orleans. He was very influential. They provide lessons in life, not just food. How to work as a team and be humble and all those beautiful things and those things everyone should have. You read two big obstacles are, one you have to give up all personal time which we know well, but, two, discrimination. What did you mean by that . One of the things for a long time kitchens are run primarily nowadays with a huge latin force and theres people that are telling stories through the food, and theyre coming from many different places and i wanted to be the voice for those people and i wanted to make sure their stories are told and make sure what they do on a daytoday basis are appreciated and celebrated. I think you also do you think thats happening . Its a challenge. One of the one of the things i hope people understand is when you come into a kitchen and eat a great meal gore into a restaurant, you understand there are a lot of people behind the scenes that have a part in that that thats largely an invisible work force that doesnt get acknowledged. For me its the future. Its now. And hopefully people will understand that. Im excited. Its a fun time to be a chef. I mean also when i think about latin food file like you are one of the people who have really made people realize this is a diverse food. People tend to think its the same, five or six things but youve taught people it can have a variety of flavor. Mmhmm. One of the biggest misconceptions about our cuisine is its homestyle food and im trying to give it the credibility it deserves with great technique, utilizing great ingredients. Those are things that are very important to me. Hypowhen people understand when they come to the restaurant its not your grandmothers food. Were doing something very impressive. Did your mom push you toward food at all . No. Its oochz very funny. For your years i was sort of considered the son of her and now shes considered the mom of me. Its neat. Like most moms shes my toughest critic and biggest fan. It also seems like yu ire a renaissance man. Yes, youre insanely busy with all of the food stuff but you really have a lot of other outside interests. Yes yes. Like most artists, if youre a musician or, you know you do some of the facets of art, youre influenced. I write poetry i love you know, you want to catch me on the weekend, youll see me at a museum during the the day. Those are things i love. It impacts cooking. I know you said if you werent a chef youd be a mariachi singer. Im happy you decided were going to have you come back on saturday sessions and play mariachi. Im going to have you sign this dish. If you could have this meal with anyone, who would it be in. Probably my grandmother. Why . Because grandmothers are never in a rush. Thank you so much.
