American filmmakers and the nazis revealed. That and much more on cbs this morning saturday, september 21st, 2013. Captioning funded by cbs and good morning. Welcome to the weekend. We begin with the wave of gun violence in chicago. Since thursday evening, at least four people were killed. 25 more were wounded in a dozen separate shootings. Gangs are blamed for some of the violence where targets include adults, innocent bystanders and even toddlers. But as Dean Reynolds reports, chicago is even safer than it was a year ago. Reporter there was a small rally friday evening against the violence that grips parts of this city. In addition to Community Leader chicagos mayor rahm emanuel attended. We cannot allow children in the city of chicago and we will not allow children in the city of chicago to have their youthfulness, their optimism their hope taken from them. Thats what gun violence does. Reporter the mayor and his audience were especially upset about the shooting of innocent children, 15yearolds and younger, one of whom was killed friday afternoon right before the rally where the mayor spoke. A 3yearold was critically wounded in this park thursday night when gunmen opened fire in an apparent gang conflict that sent 12 others to the hospital. The parks of the city of chicago belong to the families of the city of chicago. The streets of the city of chicago belong to the families of chicago. The front stoops of our homes belong to the families of the city of chicago. Assault weapons do not belong in our parks. They do not belong on our streets. Reporter the Police Superintendent Gary Mccarthy told reporters a highpowered assault weapon was used in the thursday night massacre and he said sensible gun controls are a must. Illegal guns illegal guns drive violence. And militarytype weapons like the ones we believed were used in this shooting belong in battlefield, not on the streets or in the parks or in backs of yards. Reporter yet its actually an improvement over 2012. More police have been put on the beat gathered better intelligence in blockbyblock sweeps of gang areas, and because of those new approaches gun vieolence is down 23 this year. For cbs this morning saturday, Dean Reynolds chicago. Now to washington and the budget showdown that could force a Government Shutdown and maybe even default on the federal debt. House republicans are looking to defund the Obama Health Care act and neither side is backing down. Lets get the latest from jeff pegues in our Washington Bureau. Good morning, jeff. Good morning, anthony. Late yesterday the president called the House Speaker john boehner vowing not to negotiate over the debt limit. Its like they do this every six months. Reporter during a stop at an auto plant in missouri on friday, the president responded. I mean i dont mind them disagreeing with mem. They dont like the Affordable Health care act. Theyd rather have people not have health care insurance. You know im happy to have that debate with them. But you dont have to threaten to blow the whole thing up just because you dont get your way. Reporter the vote came down along party lines. It does not provide money for the Affordable Health care act. Its time for us to say no. Its time to stop this before it causes any more damage to American Families and american businesses. Lets defund this law now and protect the American People from the economic calamity that we know obama care will create. Reporter the legislation now moves on to the democraticled senate. Even republicans acknowledge it wont pass there. In case theres any doubt in the minds of our house counterparts i want to be absolutely crystal clear. Any bill that defunds obama care is dead, dead. Its a west of time as i said before. Majority leader harry reid has vowed to strip the Health Care Provision from the bill and then called for a vote on a spending plan that will end up back in the house. If Congress Fails to fund the government by october 1st national parks, museums, and monuments will close. Government employees like air Traffic Controllers and u. S. Troops will have to temporarily work without pay. The bigger battle is ahead though, with congress and it has to do with increasing debt ceiling. The deadline for that is midoctober. Anthony . Jeff pegues in washington. Thanks, jeff. So is a federal shutdown now inevitable . Joining us now from our Washington Bureau is jake sherman, congressional reporter from politico. Jake, good morning to you. Good morning. So senator john mccain has said we have seen this movie before. How serious is this . Could there be a shutdown in nine days . Like the president said we have seen this movie before. There could be a shutdown. There are two fights, the government funding fight and the debt ceiling. The government funding fight, theyre trying to strip out obama care. The republicans are likely to back down. As harry reid said this is going nowhere in the senate but john boehner has vowed to fight even harder. They both have huge impacts to the economy, and theyre going to try to defund obama care at every turn. Jake, if there is a shutdown if it comes to that admittedly we hope it doesnt whats the likely impact . It would definitely rattle the economy. You know as the president said the economy is recovering at a its very fragile at this point. Youd see it slowly. People would first have to parks and museums and federal workers would have to work without pay. But as time goes on it gets worse, and thats something that the president does not want to see, and it really hobbles his entire second term agenda. People one doerr whos to blame. When you look at polls, 51 say republicans would be responsible for the shutdown. It sort of begs the question. Could this be more destructive to the party . John boehner has said in private meetings a Government Shutdown would be tragic for his republican majority. The republicans plan to hold on onto the house of representatives in 2014. There would be impacts. Republicans in the house are the face of koj, very unpopular congress. If they shut down the government in regular Everyday Americans felt that, it would be tragic. Thats been a warning delivered in private sessions on capitol hill. So, jake how are we likely to see this dance play out over the next week then . The senate as harry reid said, is going to strip this provision and send it back to the house. The problem is time. Theres not much time yet. The senate is going to send that bill back to the house of representatives on thursday or friday or saturday and the government shuts down on monday night. The big question is does john bainer have the ability to put that bill without the funding of obama care on the house floor and likely pass it . The answer is probably yes and it will go right to the wire and well have a cataclysmic, narrowly affording a Government Shutdown. Give us a basic idea. Understand museums shut down. What else . Social security checks would stop getting delivered. There are essential employees who would work who would continue to work like the fbi and federal Law Enforcement officials but theyd have to work without pay and that really hobbles the entire federal work force. So regular everyday people wouldnt necessarily feel it immediately, but it gets worse as time goes on. Nine days and counting. Jake sherman, thank you. Thank you. The government crisis and shutdown will be the topics on face the nation tomorrow. His guests will be henne kissinger and tom coburn. The death toll in colorado stands at seven. Now adding to the trouble, four more oil spills some from toppled storage tanks. They were discovered friday. About 22,000 gallons have spilled since the flooding began last week. Crews are waiting for floodwaters to recede before beginning cleanup operations in some areas. For your more we join anna werner. Shes in lyons. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Lyons is one of the hardest hit towns as you know and the reason behind me, this water in the river, which is still running very fast. But you have to understand the night of the flooding what this area was like. This river was more than 900 feet wide and it was well over my head. Well over my head. Authorities tell us some 15 feet high over here but many more lives were it not for one mans plan, many more lives could have been lost here. The river is still running fast and strong through lyons. Its jumped the banks and now instead of rushing under the bridge, it runs next to it. Dan barber saw this coming. You have two rivers in a path running foekt. To me that was very concerning. Reporter mountain runoff collects right here but lyons did not have a Flood Warning system. Bashr was the county sheriffs assigned to the town. He tried to convince leader to spend 25,000 on new warning sirens. I made a 3 foot by 3 foot over over overload cookie dough map. I showed how the water is going to flow and how its going shut off certain parts of town and they got it and thats exactly what happened. The sirens were installed in 2008. Last thursday they woke up tammy grabowskis family. Knew the sound. Knew something was going on. Was alerted immediately. Nicholas angelo is the former mayor of lyons. I know so many people along the river got to get out. That system saved between 200 and 300 lives probably. One of the deputies texted me that my cookie dough map was spot on. Reporter a map that each his wife thought was ridiculous. She laughed at me as well as many people did. Theyre not laughing anymore. Do you believe his plan saved lives for lyons. Oh yeah. I think it did. For sure. Hes got to be feeling good about that. Reporter the impact on lyons has been dramatic. We are virtually the ohm people here besides Police Officers who are monitoring making sure people arent coming into the town to loots. There are no services, no power in suhher, no water. Bridges are out. There was a road here completely blown through by the water. So its going to take months a very long time to get it back together. Thanks, anna. The death toll along mexicos floodstricken west coast has now risen on 101. Two tropical storms pounded the region during the week triggering numerous mud slides. 22,000 homes were damaged in acapulco. 68 people are missing after a macive mud slide. A Police Helicopter carrying members on board is also missing. Malala abdul gani tall a bar was second in command. The u. S. Was opposed to the release fearing bar a door will return to the battlefield. Once president obama attends the u. N. Assembly here in new york on monday theres a chance hell meet the new president of iran. Lets get more from Charlie Dagata in london. Charlie, good morning. Good morning to you, vinita and anthony. If a meeting of any description takes place next week and its still an if it would be the first since 1979 and its on the back of the promise of a new attitude from the iranian president. Hassan rowhani was elected in june vowing to bring change to them. Crippling expectations has attacked their economy, cutting oil revenues in half and triggering widespread unemployment f after his election he promised constructive interaction with the world. The softening stance is a dramatic turnaround of the rhetoric of his predecessor mahmoud ahmadinejad. They insist their Nuclear Program is peaceful and that its plants are enriching uranium needed to produce electricity, not bombs. In an interview this week rowhani said we have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb and were not going to do so. Were looking for a peaceful new technology. But International Inspectors remain skeptical and they dont know whether to take them at their word. But in a further sign of irans apparent willingness to move forward, president rueowhani says it should be how to prevent things from getting worse and a need to talk and think about how to make things better. Now, the reaction from the white house has been care fle measured. Knob has ruled out a meeting at the u. N. Next wyoming e week. While theres encouraging talk coming out of iran they say action speaks loutder than words. Anthony and vinita . Charlie dagata in london thank you. You couldnt see it on the Silver Screen but rather on the small screen. This year its cory monteith. People say hes too young. People ask should he be among the personalities who passed away too early. Theyll honor James Gandolfini Jonathan Winters and a producer by the name of gary david goldberg. But theyre not honoring jack klugman klugman, which is a shame. Monteith was 30 years old, didnt have a giant body of work. But they say lets get the young viewers. I dont think necessarily that young people are zboij to be watching the emmys. I dont think its that kind of a diop rah for them. I i think the other guys should have been on there. How do you do, that not having klugman. They put out a statement defending his choice. He said it was a rather personal choice. Cory was for a rather personal choice. Cory was for a different generation generation. I dont think that he had that kind of body of work that, you know he should be honored in that way. Yes, okay i agree, hes 31 years old playing a 17yearold. Lets step away from the drama and talk about the awards themselves. Best drama. Yes. I think breaking bad will win. You know what i recent . Walking dead never got nominated. Its great show. From it girl to it guy it looks like the next award could go to Bryan Cranston for breaking bad or if kevin spacey for house of cards . I think lit go to Bryan Cranston because its their last show. You think it may play against them. Yes, i think it will. I think it will. What about comedy category Outstanding Comedy Series . I think modern family is the a first. With books, you can be the equivalent of chuck berry when youre 7 years old because you get to read a cool book. Welcome to cbs this morning saturday. Im anthony mason. And im vinita nair. Our top story this half hour, a remarkable reversal of fortune for a community in need. When president obama visited elk hard, indiana, in 2009. The Unemployment Rate there was more than 15 . And it remaining above the National Average todaying but the city is about to get a big boost from a native son who returned to his roots. There was a spark about him always. It was impossible not to be aware that david was in the room. For those who knew him, david gunlak made an immediate impression. He would have dinner parties. He loved to be on the river. But even friends like elizabeth never had a full picture of the man who would reverse the fortunes of a community. I learned an enormous. Amount about him after he passed away. Thats when i learned about him. The 56yearold insurance executive died of a heart attack in 2011 leashing no heirs. Thats when she became executor of his estate which included 11 houses and was valued at 150 million. He left all of it to his hometown. Thats when we realized very quickly, oh, goodness, this is a substantial amount of money. Gunlak left elkhart in high school but in 2007 he began returning home more often, rekwamting himself with friends like bobby. He said its hard to be friends with you. The disparity between your lifestyle and mine is so great. And he said but i like being around the people from elk hard. He remembers the first meeting he had with gunlak after their 20 years apart. He left that night saying theres not much for me in elk elkhart elkhart. Im going to go to hollywood and make movies. I was sitting there, yeah, yeah whatever. A come of years later he made it. It mass bill murray and Robert Duvall and sissy spacek. Reporter he would return home and stay with his mother. He would whisk away to a jet in europe and have highfunded profiles. Cant you get a girl . He said mother thats not the point. Id like to have you come. The president will be there. I said ill be there. Reporter marriage swift knew her son gave money to washington politicians but even she didnt know about his will. He loved elkhart. I knew that. He never confided in me that he had money. Reporter hes the president of the Elkhart Community foundation. One of unique things about his gift is because he gaive no direction direction, its discretionary. Daves gift to a community that has 200,000 citizens on a per capita basis is one of the most historic gifts across the country and i think well be interpreting daves impact in our community 50 years from now. So how does a place like elkhart spend 150 million . Brad reagan for the investing wall street journal joins us. Good morning, brad. Good morning. How much of a difference can this money make, do you think . Well potentially a lot. In a town like elkhart, the tens of millions of dollars theyll spend every year out of this gift, that can solve a lot of problems. You have a lot of small little charities and nonprofit groups have their problems. The challenge is who to focus on. When you have a huge pot of money, Everyone Wants it. I see they have a professional baseball team. Whoever left the money put a ton of restrictions on it. In anthonys piece he didnt. Is that because hes 56 or he never intended for there to be restrictions sf. I think he was young. He tried to start his own charities and focus on his own projects. They didnt go well. There were times he thought people were trying to take advantage of his money and he went to the folks in elkhart and said i want to put it in place. If somebody happens to me i want you to decide. Some people say if david had lived longer he might have maybe chosen some more tailored projects that were closer to him personally but he clearly put this in place that if something happens, i want you guys to decide. What more can you tell us about him as a person . He was an unusual person, odd, ek sec trick we know people who accumulate friends very easily. David was not that person. You go to elkhart, people didnt know him well. I talked to people in hollywood. They didnt know him well out there. People didnt know him in london. His former friend from london said they ate together every night for almost ten years. He focused on his work. He focused on a small number of things he was very passion at about. Then he sold his company, made a lot of money and he was just starting to figure out what he wanted to do next when he died. Brad regan, thanks very much. Thanks. And now heres a look at the weather foryour weekend. Up next medical news including reports on colon cancer and the threat of drugresistant bacteria. From a Doctors Point of view there are things that are Getting Better but studies do suggest that some gastroenterologists simply go too quickly and theyre not looking carefully enough. The good news is that gastroenterology societies are really laying down criteria saying, look youve got do it this way and people are starting to realize this is a problem. Also a story this week that made lots of headlines. They released new estimates of a number of americans who get sick from bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. At least 2 Million People are infected with socalled super bugs each year and more than 20,000 people die. The centers for Disease Control say theyre probably conservative and resistant strains of bacteria are a major health threat. Holy, why is it happening . Its happening for one reason. Were overusing antibiotics both in medicine and agriculture. Bacteria are really smart. For being so smart,ll theyre really, really smart. If you use the same antibiotics over and over new strans occur. We expect these bacteria to become resistant, but its happening faster than ever right now because were overusing antibiotics and its happening so fast we cant create new antibiotics fast enough. How do you know if you actually need them then . Most of the things that people come in to me for are coughs colds, tur. The vast majority are viruses. Antibiotics wont help you. One thing thats interesting there are researchers out of Duke University looking for a quick blood test that can tell whats ail yog so maybe soon the doctors wont have to guess so much. The National Institutes of health announced a major new initiative this week to find new drugs that might locate alzheimers. Its modeled after successful efforts like using drugs to prevent heart disease. They predict number of people with dementia will triple within the next 40 years. Its 600 billion a year. You cant watch the news at night without seeing lots of commercials for prescription drugs. The farther suit cal industry spends over 4 billion on Television Ads every year. Now a startling study from the dartmouth ins stult on Health Policy find that six out of ten ads for prescription drugs and eight out of ten adds for overthecounter medications are misleading or false. How are they misleading . Words matter. Nothing works better than. Its the best. Nothing works better. It could be they all work the same or nothing works better. Doing nothing works better. Words matter. The other thing is the spokesperson. Beautiful, cute, sexy. Theyre saying i took this drug and it made me such and such. You can have one in a Million People. And that person is your spokesperson. It doesnt tell you how effective the drug is. Do you have patients who come in and say i want x drug, they know what they want . All the time. The study pointed out on average we see 30 hour as year of these teasements but most spend 30 minute as minutes as year with a drug. One drug they want is antidepress anltsantidee pres antidepress antidepressants. They come in and say thats the drug i need. Its not just going to give you a good day if you take it. Theyre regulated by theit. Finally this morning nobody enjoys a hangover but heres a surprise. It may actually get better as you get older. Researchers surveyed more than 21 and 894. Older people didnt overindulge. Am i not old enough . Ive not experienced it yet. One thing is that the difficult nation of binge drinking changes. 18 to 24 its nine drinks. When youre 65 and older, its six drinks. The other thing is perhaps tolerance develops over time or maybe people develop tricks of the trade, so being hydrated can hen. The one i like the best is Natural Selection which is common sense. The people who drink and they just feel horrible the next day, they have learned to stop binge drinking so by the time theyre 65 theyre left standing. Theres nothing like a toddler waking you up before 7 00. If you know thats going to happen all of a sudden drinking doesnt look so good. Thank you, dr. Jon lapook and Holly Phillips. Jimmy the robot. Coming on this half hour hitler and the horrors of war. Hollywood says the books collaborated with the nazis. Youre having a midlife crisis. How do you play the dating game right now. How the southern sound came together and oh the sweet music they played. But first the top story this half hour. The budget battle in congress that could rapidly become a crisis. With House Republicans determined to kill obama care and the president and Senate Democrats determined to stop them. Jeff pegues is in our Washington Bureau with the latest on that. Good morning, jeff. Good morning, vinita. The controlled senate will get it on friday. Theyre putting the economists at risk to make an ideological risk. Hes referring to the voting in the house that didnt fund the Affordable Health caring at. They called the mostly Party Line Vote a victory. Our message to the United States senate is real simple. The American People dont want the government shut down and they dont want obama care. And so the legislation now goes to the senate. Even gop senators acknowledge that in its current form it wont pass there. Senator harry reid has vowed to strip the health care from the legislation and then call for a vote on the spending bill alone. The bottom line here is a threat of the Government Shutdown looms and then there is the issue of the debt ceiling. Some republicans say they wont raise it. The president says the result could be devastating for the economy. If we dont raise the debt ceiling, were deadbeats. If we fail to increase the dead limit, we would send our economy into a tailspin. Thats a quote, by the way, what i just said. You know who said it . The republican speaker of the house, john boehner. Late yesterday the president called the speaker and told him that he would not negotiate over the debt ceiling. So the battle lines have been drawn in this budget showdown. Anthony, vinita . Jeff pegues in washington. Thank you, jeff. The deadly floodwaters in colorado are receding and theyve revealed a hidden environmental problem that until now was conceal under the murky surface. Anna werner is live in lyons, colorado. Good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony and vinita. The question for state officials are about oil spills. There are thousands of oil and gas operations and wells, fracking operations here in colorado, and now there are some oil spills. Some of them come from storage tanks. Others from pipe leaks. And some have been cleaned up. Some have not been cleaned up. And the question for authorities now is what could be the impacts of those. The state is tracking those bills, trying to get a sense. But some areas are still inaccessible so answers are sometimes off at this point. Meanwhile residents are trying to cope with damage to their communities. The town of lyons here that were in this morning is virtually deserted because there are virtually no services no power, no water. People are trying to put their lives back in place. Back in lyons the river is still running fast and strong and it actually moved itself from running under the normal bridges and literally cut a new channel next to where it normally flows. This morning were standing here and we can really get a sense for how fast the river is still runs, but to give you an idea what the flooding was like here in lyons, this river was some 900 feet wide, and it was way over my head at the flood peak. Anthony and vinita back to you. Anna western never lyons, colorado. Thank you. Lost since the war a single archive copy just turned up in brussels belgium. Now i thatthat its just turned up it will be shown here in new york. That was the exception not the rule. A new book claims that hollywood actually cooperated with the nazis to keep the lucrative german film market open for movies. Its called the collaboration of hitler. Ben, good morning. Thanks for having me. You worked on this for nine years. I did. You had to dig out documents that were sort of buried away for some time. What did you find out . The first thing i found was a letter. I was in the german state archives in berlin and i was looking through hitlers personal collection and i was looking at his interpretations of american movies. They were fascinating and funny. But i came a cross a letter from 20th century fox, and it said heil hitler. They would be honored if he would give a short note about american movies in germany and i thought this is not what im using to. This is a crazy document and i need to explore. You mentioned 20th century fox. How many studios were cozy with him . All of them. 20th century, mgm, paramount, united, columbia. The main ones were mgm, paramount, and 20th century fox. And did hitler actually get movies or scenes killed in films . Shoo he did. His representative in los angeles would actually be invited to studios in los angeles and he would watch movies with these exec tibs and he would tell them what scenes they needed to cut if they want to preserve the business. You say it was based solely on business. So it make mess wonder did the student owe make a lot of money off the film market. When hitler came to it he was a hit. Hed watch one or two movie and his opinions would be note of these two movies. Foimd he loved laurel and hardy. He would watch any of them and would giggle. He said laurel and hardy movies are good because they contained a lot of very nice ideas and clever jokes. I love the fact that one time they gave him mickey mouse films. Thats right. One of his favorite movies was king kong. There were some nazis who thought king kong was and this is their language an attack on the nerves of the germany people. He,000 it was funny and he watched it many times. When did this relationship come to a close oonld why did it take us so long to know it . What happened was hitler conquered other territories and the studios found they were having trouble distributing their product in other countries and thats when the studios stopped and decided maybe they should make an antinazi film. When they did so they were finally kicked out of germany. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. In terms of the things that have been a touchstone for you as you have evolved as a human being, i mean what is the lesson there for you that you would share in terms of the consciousness of women and the consciousness of self . Just a little question. I know for a long time i was resistant to the womens movement, to the idea of feminism because i thought you didnt like men and i do and it was really it was partly because of gloria and other feminists i heard in the beginning when i became an activist. I realized it doesnt have to do with antimen. It has to do with democracy. We cant have democracy unless women have an equal presence and voice, and that happened in the early 70s for me. I was already in my late 30s, and so you know, im latecomer to this but it changed my whoef whole life sfwhee had de. We had debra spar yesterday. One of the comments women without men is like a fish without a bicycle. Hayed to say that was a wonderful member of Australian Parliament who said it but it was funny, so ill take credit. They conducted a poll and gained perspective. Sharon jason is here to tell us what they learned. Good morning. Good morning. What were the biggest trends among singles over 50. Well singles over 50 are very department. Theyre comfortable in their own skin and they know what they want in a partner. A at this point in their life they feel less pressure. Maybe when they were younger there were family pressures to get married, have children. They dont have those pressures. Theyve been there done that. 71 of them are divorced so they dont feel the pressures that they once might have had. They also said the survey asked them do you want to turn back the clock and be a 20 or 30something dating in 2013 and almost 55 said they dont want to do that. They dont want to go back there. I can relate to that feeling. Are most of these people looking to get married again . Thats very split. About 51 . Just over half said yes, but when you look at what men and women said its pretty interesting. 52 of women said yes. 52 of men said no. And this device is really reflective of whats going on in remarriage. I wrote a story about remarriage and the big decline and the big split and feeling that people arent sure whether they want to remair. It was interesting to hear someone say i was in a bad marriage. I want a Good Relationship now. What are deal breakers. What do they say are nonstarters in a relationship . The big three or the ones that were very close together were financial instability, poor health and physical unattractiveness. It makes sense. The relationship experts say it makes sense that those would be the ones because theyre starting new relationships so these are key points for a new relationship. That makes sense. Some of those characteristics youre looking for when youre younger as well. People over 50 all have some romantic history obviously. How much do past relationships impact what theyre thinking now . Well, nas the baggage we all hear about and they say that most of those who were surveyed say they really dont let the relationships impact their current views, you know their past breakups impact their current views, but they did say most of them said they would like to revisit a past relationship. That there was at least one they wanted to revisit. And three quarters of them said theyre friends with their ex interesting. That might be a little different than 20yearolds. What about age . Over 50 do they care as much about the age at that point . About a quarter of them said age didnt matter. The rest were divided. They wanted somebody the same age, younger or older. An example was one woman who i spoke who who was a survey participant. She was 60. She said she found if she dated somebody who was 64 or older, she didnt have anything in common with them. She wanted to stay closer to her own age. Thats very interesting. What surprised you most. You covered this sort of thing. What surprised you most . This was kind of a rea fir nation of what ive been seeing because ive covered dating relationships and human behavior. What we find is because weve got baby boomers, this is the baby boomer population many of them have been divorced. Theres a whole phenomenon where people were married and then divorced. We have a longer lifespan and they say theyre not going to stay in an unhappy relationship. We have a lot of dating websites geared just like our time to this age demographic. Shaper jason, thanks so much. Thank you. You can find more of this story in this weekends edition of usaweekend and on usaweekend. Com. And now a final look at weather for your weekend. Live claritin clear. Every day. iayzz when we really got moving in the 70s, we were doing like 50 albums a year. It was a sound that youve been going for everywhere else but couldnt get. Thats why it became the place where everybody wanted to record. Muscle shoals, alabama, is one of the most unlikely places to spark a musical revolution. The small town on the Tennessee River is the birthplace of a unique sound created in the legendary fame studios. A new documentary tells the story of fame studios and its creator rick hall. Theyre both with us. Good morning to you both. Good morning. Good morning. There was a sound that came out of memphis, a sound that came out of detroit, but Muscle Shoals was a small place. Small place. How would you describe that sound, greg . Thats a 28,000 question. I would describe it as rauchlt Human Emotion is palpable in the sound. Its got great base and drums to it. Great rhythm section. Great sound. I always kind of thought of it kind of like a poster groove. I like what was said about it. It comes from deep down in your stomach and comes ott of your gut. Really. Is that something you were aiming for rick . Yes. Ive always been the kind of guy who could put up with a lot of mistakes on record, but i want the human element. I want the soul and the feeling the great feeling. By 19 6 the word got out about the sound you created down there and atlantic shipped Wilson Pickett down there and then they shipped Aretha Franklin down there. And the first day we cut, we cut two sides and both of them went to number one. It was a twosided smash. And, of course i started with it because i had percy sledge. Percy had a song when a man loves a woman which is a renowned record and he came in and so i sent the record to jay wechsler and he said rick i dont like the record. I dont think its a hit. I said youve got to be kidding. You lost your hearing . Ging ghearing. . He said i dont thing its a hit. My stock went up overnight. You were right all along. It doesnt take much to get them to sit down and talk about it. The story has not been well known amongst the public. Usually the musicians are very willing to talk about give their props those who came before them and this was sufficient an iconic story of these guys and also all these artists knew their story had. Been told. That was the hook you know, to get all these great artists to come out and share their time and experiences with us. But this story continue because the almond brothers ended up recording as well didnt they . Yes, they did. I signed duane first as a guitar player first and then he brought his brother later in and they formed the group. We claim to have started the southern rock era. One of the other things thats particularly striking and you see this in the documentary is this was an interracial sound. It was a black and white sound wasnt it . Yes it was. Yes it was. Its a special part of the story because not only was it that, it was happening during the height of the civil rights struggle in this country and it was happening in plaem, you know, at that time. And so even all the more special credit it to all these guys. They all came together. And they were just completely colorblind and they were making Music Together in the studio and its a part of the story, an important part of the story. Rick, did you have a favorite artist . I had a lot of favorite artists. I had aretha percy sledge wilson picket etta james, king curtis. Its a beautiful list and a great sound. Thank you sir. Up next the dish wts with chef paul lee brand.
