Earlier this week, an 18 month old girl was pronounced dead after she was found in abilene kansas. So far this summer, at least 26 kids and 15 states have died after being left in hot cars. That dealer saw our undercover shopping investigation at used car dealers, where we found cars one repaired safety defecting being sold and no law requiring dealers to tell consumers about the recalls. He said there should be a law against selling those cars, period. How many consumers do you this i really understand recalls . I would say maybe one in ten. Earl stewart believes recalls should be made obvious to shoppers, so his toyota near west palm beach, florida with air bags are clearly labeled on the windshield. Is this how you mark them . Yes. This spells it out . Yes. It tells a shopper that the defective air bags may injure or kill a driver. Unmistakable. Thats the opposite of what we found in our undercover investigation. Not only were the cars we saw not labeled, but sales people either didnt tell us about recalls, or didnt even know about them. Any recalls, anything pertaining to this vehicle . Stewart contacted us after he saw our story. Were you surprised by what you heard those sales people saying . No, it is exactly what goes on everyday. He even had his own mystery shoppers check 20 car dealers to see whether they disclosed the air bag recalls. We called on the car advertised and denied the car had a recall. All 20. Not one. He says with no law requiring disclosure, sales people arent inclined to do it. Salesperson that feeds his family based on commission, going to look a customer in the eye and say this has got to approximaa potentially deadly recall. It will cost a sale. Stewart says he still sells the cars to keep up with competition, but given the dangers, we wanted to know why he is selling them at all. How are you going to feel if one does explode in a car that somebody bought here from you, even with disclosure and severely injured or killed . I ask myself that exact same question. How will i feel. I would feel absolutely terrible. And i feel like im caught. Im stuck. I dont have i dont have a choice. Im doing all i can, and it is not enough. It has to be a law. Theyve got to make it illegal. For that to happen, he needs the support from the florida automobile dealers association. Their president , ted smith, says it is under discussion. They want manufacturers to take financial responsibility. So is there an answer . Absolutely. But the answer doesnt come have to come from the consumer or the dealer. It should come from the auto maker. Is that passing the buck . No, it is a sign of responsibility where it belongs. One of the Manufacturer Association told us auto makers work individually with their franchises and in every instance, the dealer is compensated for their work. But for now, the cars are still being sold. All over the country. How can you possibly sell a car to a customer that you know has got a safety recall that could potentially kill that customer. How can that be. It has to be illegal. It has to be. Well, it turns out, one of the places you wont find cars with serious safety recalls being sold now is earl stewarts own dealership. He tells us that our interview prompted him to rethink what he is doing, and he has stopped selling any cars with recall items that cause injuries or deaths, open recalls, which means he is currently holding back somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 cars or more. He says by the end of the year, it will probably cost him 500 million, that decision alone. You could tell he was conflicted in your interview. He said after the interview, i have to tell you, it had a big impact and i cant do this any more. I have a feeling he talked to his lawyer. He was conflicted and it pushed him over the edge. I remember watching caleb at a Summer League meet. Really . I was 6, i think, he was 5. This kid is going to break a record. Reporter russell didnt break murphys record. As one of the youngest male swimmers at the 2012 olympic trials, he also bested Age Group Records previously held by none other than Michael Phelps. Two years later he took an almost sixmonth break from the pull. I was dealing with some mental demons at the time and i kind of lost track of my love for the sport so i think i needed that time off. I wouldnt change anything. I dont think id be where i am at right now if it werent for the time i took off. Reporter on the womens side, 21yearold leah smith is swimming the 400 and 800meter freestyle competition and races she qualified for just behind 12 Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky. I was in a pretty good position to make it, but it doesnt seem like touching the wall and seeing the number by your name and then just when i touch the wall, katie looked at me and said, we are going to rio i was a rookie in 2012 and i feel its just as exciting this time around and i think a large part of that probably has to do with seing the excitement from the rookies. Reporter you have so many young swimmers on this team. How does that change how you coach . Well, what it does, it allows us to really use a lot of veterans on the team to kind of set the tone.
