The house, this whole auditorium was literally shaking with boos. How do you get booed out of your own convention. By your own delegation. It was unbelievable. So i think the people in this arena spoke for themselves. You agree . I thought it was classless to tell you the truth. If youre going to go to a convention, either go to support or dont go at all. So you know, i think thats just politician 101. Here is a larger point, party unity. This has been a movement from a candidate to a movement, and you need the party, because a general election, you need structure, organization, you need money. If you were in this room last night, you know we had the party. I mean, if you were in the room and you saw the electricity when i spoke, when governor pence spoke. It was an incredible feeling. The room was going crazy. You should have been, there were delegates. The question is the larger republican party. The Trump Delegates are sitting on flute are and then you have another 15,000 people in the stands and everything. It is a special thing. Listen, you look at reince, the whole structure, what weve done in washington, the people who have come on board, meaning the big political names. It is, you know, believe me, party unity is there. It is very much there. We keep hearing all the time that trumps three adult children, you, donald and ivanka are his closest advisors. What is the best advice youve given him . What role do you think you play . I hate the word advisor. Are we advisors. Confidants. Were his kids. We love him. He is an amazing guy. He has a lot of trust in us, whether it be bonlicoming out o business. When we have something on our mind, we say to him. If he accepts it, fine. Thats family. I dont know much about politics. Thats what i do in my everyday life. But we spend a lot of time with our father and we can tell him things that other people may not be able to tell him. That gives us a unique role in the process. No, it is different than that. The message is that the fact that every country that is part of nato should pay their own weight. Right now, we subsidize the vast majority of nato. How is that fair. You have countries who dont pay anything. They pay in very little. Thats a valid point to say everybody should pay their own way. The other, including president obama, has made that point. If you look at the amount that the u. S. Pays proportionately to nato, it is like 80 . But the question was in fact there was an attack on a baltic country from russia or somewhere else, nato has fledged to defend them and the United States is part of nato. Sure. If you dont live up to the agreement, people will worry about whether you can be depended upon. He absolutely believes in nato. He wants people to pay their own way. This is part of his narrative, right. Why are we getting ripped off around the world. Why are we being taken advantage of. Why do we have to be the worlds police force when no one else steps forward. Youve seen this for so many years. His point is people have to pay in the system, pay their own way, it is not right for us to take the disproportionate burden. He did not mean to say as president , he would not support, and live up to the nato agreement. Nato is important, right. By the way, he has said you have ov overhaul nato. Nato was always designed for dealing with large countries, large wars, you know, ussr, so many other things. He said listen, kind of obsolete. Isis, al qaeda, other groups like that. And i think he has been 100 right. It is interesting that nato just formed a group that is gieared specifically to deal with terrorism. Have you seen your dads speech . I have. He says he has trouble talking about personal things. Will this be a personal speech. Listen, i think it will be a deep speech. It will be an important speech. It will talk about a lot of policy that he has talked about for the last 12 months. I think policy quite frankly he has been right about over the last 12 months, all over the world with the attacks, what just happened in nice, orlando, all these places. Right now, this world is in a dark place. But i also think there is tremendous optimism. I think youre going to see both sides of that, hear the problems, but also going to be optimistic in term was how hes the commander in chief prompter or no prompter. There will be a prompter. Okay. It is a huge political gamble by cruz. He is fundraising off it this morning. He thinks it went well among his supporters. He is saying look, i this trump will lose, im going to on the guy that stood up, im the principle conservative who represents all those people who werent for trump, and when he loses in the fall, ill be there to be the true conservative. Pence gave a great speech and were not talking about that. Were not talking about the way he spoke highly of mr. Trump last night. His prescription for the future of the republican party. And not for Hillary Clinton. He was upstaged by a man that trump called lyin ted. It is true. The Trump Campaign, he is perfectly happy with the outcome. They got a certain benefit. The boos, which rang out throughout the hall, did from the trump point of view, portray a unified Convention Hall in opposition to ted cruz. So you know, we saw Paul Manafort last night after it was over, seemed happy with the outcome. We knew it was in the speech. There is reporting they were whipping the boos. They wanted this picture. That doesnt help mike pence. You have to feel bad for mike pence, because he was overshadowed. If they wanted it avoid this scene, they could have put ted cruz on 7 00, 7 30, low profile, not in primetime, you know. They seem to want this. Both sides kind of got what they wanted. The headline today is the party unified. The party is still not unified. Does that matter. It was more than it was maybe, but it it matters a lot. Donald trump, democrats have a huge structural advantage. If you are a republican nominee, you need all the republican votes and then you need more votes. But you need republican unity at the level. Youve got to get 95 of republicans, so unity matters. And structure. And structure matters too. He has made it this far without either one. It is a different world. Theres some controversy because of what donald trump told the New York Times about nato and that he might not honor the nato agreement because they had not paid their fair share. That goes against the grain of everything thats been said and also raises the question, what is his judgment about treaties . Is it about whether they bring us economic benefit or Something Else before they honor a treaty . And it also raises a question, will it cause other countries around the world to worry about americas commitment . Well, look, the countries ought to worry about our commitment under any circumstances. Every president has been saying that the nato countries do not pay their fair share, which is not just important as a financial thing. They cant do anything militarily. Were not doing this for the benefit of those countries. Were doing it for the benefit of americas interests in the world. So you have only two countries in the Nato Alliance other than the United States that pay 2 of the Gross Domestic Product for defense. So you have all these people who are not doing their fair share. They cant militarily function. And theyre saying which means theyre a source of weakness, not a source of strength. Thats fine. Thats an argument to make. You know national security. Right. But to my point, do we base our Foreign Policy interests on whether somebody pays their bills or do we base our Foreign Policy interests on what is best for Americas National security . Were in korea, not because korea is paying some bills. Were in korea to contain north korea and kim jongil. And if the south korean government was as shortsighted and as lacking in seriousness as about half the nato governments, wed have to have a serious debate about whether or not wed stay in korea. You had the right question, but you assumed the answer. The right question is, is it in americas interest to sustain a relationship where after several president s now bush was doing this i was with rumsfeld when he was making the same case. Hese guys have had 20 y fix this. They refuse to fix it. Specifically, the New York Times asked donald trump, if russia came over the border into estonia, latvia, lithuania, places americans may not know about, would we come to their immediate military aid . If you were president , would you come to their immediate military aid . I would think about it a great deal for this reason. Before you would do it. Estonia is in the suburbs of st. Petersburg. The russians arent going to necessarily come across the border militarily. The russians are going to do what they did in ukraine. 40 of estonia is russian. Theyre going to have a militia. Im not sure i would Risk Nuclear War over some place which is the suburbs of st. Petersburg. You have to think about, what does this stuff mean . Our treaties dont matter. Our treaties have to be thought about carefully. Treaties which go all the way back to the 1940s. What kind of message its a huge message if the United States is saying or youre saying that if theres a trump administration, youre not going to honor your obligation and that its i think he would honor his obligation. Hes also saying he might rethink the obligation. One of the arguments you have made is when assad crossed a red line, that it was a terrible thing for the United States. Sure. Because we did not do what we said were going to do. That americas word is important. Right. And there youre saying americas word is not important. Thats what you just said. What im saying is if trump went into office and said we have one year to fix this, which you would have. You cant terminate nato overnight. But there are provision for terminating nato. He said, we have one year to fix this. Unless you agree to do your fair share and youre responsible so youre saying trump thinks we should terminate the agreement with nato . Reporter they wield influence rarely seen in a sp s president ial campaign and urged trump to fire Corey Lewandowski in june and gave him the praise of choosing mike pence as his running mate. They have been a major factor in creating stability around a candidate that didnt really have much of a campaign staff. Reporter but its 34yearold ivanka who has stepped forward as chief surrogate for her father. Shes got the toughest job potentially at this convention. Her job is to bridge the gap with women. Jared is a very successful developer and he just loves politics now. Reporter ivankas husband Jared Kushner is also a major player. Like his fatherinlaw, he is a wealthy real estate developer. He also owns the new york observer. The first thing he did he helped set up the digital operation for the campaign. Then he started setting up the policy shop. Before you knew it, Jared Kushner became a Senior Adviser to donald trump. Reporter recently, kushner, who is an other drthodoxed jew a fire storm of criticism for retweeting antisemitic photography. He helped in the apac conference in march. He has tried to smooth the jagged edges but it hasnt always worked. He hired the speech writers for Melania Trumps speech this week which she rejected. Even perhaps more than jared, even though jared has become very handson as one Campaign Adviser told me when ivanka speaks, everyone listens. Reporter ivanka trump is playing a role we normally see from a candidates spouse and, charlie, remember, she was also a registered independent so in addition to helping with women, she could help her father reach out to independent voters in building next phase of the campaign. The trump people knew what ted cruz was going to say. They knew he was not going to endorse. They made a calculated decision to let it happen. You might say im not saying it but when a conspiratorial mind could say they let him walk into an ambush and this was the final getting even for what happened during the primary they knew the booing would come and believe it would bring enthusiasm or unity . Or they figured it would finish him off forever and if he was setting himself up to run next time that this would be a very serious blow. Some notion they expected he might have an endorsement. Im not sure i believe that. I dont know what happened. But we saw what happened. And lets think about it here for a minute what we now have. The old order is what Newt Gingrich would call him. I call him the moderate wing in the republican party. They are not here. John kasich is not here. The bushs are not here. Romney not here. None of them are here so that is the moderate ring of the party. Now we have ted cruz who was a favorite of the right wing of the party. We see what happened there last night. So, basically, what has happened, we now have kind of three republican parties. The old order, you know, the moderates, the right wing and now right in the middle is the trump wing. Can the trump wing do it alone . Because, obviously, it looks like they are not going to get much help from either of the other wings. Answer your own question. Well, they believe that all this convention is about is building up Hillary Clintons negatives. They think that is all that matters. They want to make the election about her and they say if its about her, then she loses. It kinds up being about him, they think they lose. There is hardly any mention of president obama. Its all about hillary. Yes. Basically, we have two clinton conventions this year, this one and the one youre going to have next week. We were all here together last night, bob. This Convention Hall, probably the people at home have been waiting for the speech that mike pence, the governor of indiana delivered last night. It was a stem winder. He hit all of the right notes. The crowd was on their feet and nobody is talking about it. This is a future star of the party, someone that donald trump says would be the coo of a trump presidency. And once again, have you a different headline than what was expected to come out. We had the melania headlines for two days. I guess someone would say, well, at least they got melania out of the headlines and we got on to another story. But, again, this is not the story line i think in the beginning. How well are they manage to get this to come out . I dont think is there any management. Its my understanding they are not vetting these speeches. Now we did see, norah, i got a copy of the speech before he went on. I knew that was in there. They knew this was in there. You could make the argument that although youre getting even with a guy that nobody likes very much and that goes not just beyond the trump folks. I mean, he has had one of the most unpopular members of the senate. He always used that as a badge of pride. He said i didnt come to washington just to make friends. I came here to try to change things. They have been calling it an unconventional convention. Do you think its been a success . Since nothing has seemed to have gone according to plan. By their measurement, it is a success, but they think all that matters is driving up Hillary Clintons negatives.
