It is irresponsible to have accusations of american involvement, when were simply waiting for their request. Were at the Republic National convention inside quicken loans arena in cleveland. The country is struggling this morning to make sense of another mass shooting targeting police. Three baton rouge area Law Enforcement officers were killed sunday morning. They were responding to the call of a man with a rifle. Cbs news identified the gunman as gavin long from kansas ci city, missouri, and killed during a gun fight with police. This unfolded after police shot and killed a black man in baton rouge. David is live at the scene. We were told everything that took place, and cameras all over the place. There is another one on the overhang area where people fill up their cars. In the distance, the car wash area, there was a camera that showed the officer being shot vacuuming his car. The gunman was sliding alongside one of the buildings, pausing, looking around a corner and opening fire. His movements were gifted and tactical. Our sources said it was clear, he knew what he was doing. Rapid gunfire is held on cell phone video taking place during the deadly assault. Gunfire, officer down. Shots fired. Officer down. Reporter the shooting began sunday morning, when Baton Rouge Police responded to a 911 call about an armed man. He was wearing all black, standing behind a Beauty Supply store, holding a rifle. Reporter the suspect, 29yearold gavin long opened fire on the officers minutes after they arrived on scene. He was killed am a shootout which lasted roughly eight minutes. Hero is not a word for the Police Officers out there. The sheriffs deputies and city officers, just incredible human beings. Reporter three officers from two different departments were killed in the standoff. 35yearold father of four, brad garafolo, and montrel jackson, who had just become a father. Three other officers were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition. Charles cavalier is officer jacksons uncle. He knew the danger of the job, but he loved it. Doing something you died, i guess thats the way it is. Reporter it is a belblow to community, still reeling after the death of alton sterling. Police fatally shot him, sparking nationwide protests. On july 8th, officer jackson posted his thoughts on what happened to facebook. Quote, im working in the streets, so any protesters, officers, friends, family or whoever, if you see me and need a hug or want to say a prayer, i got you. This latest tragedy is another devastating loss for Police Departments across the country. Just over a week ago, dallas lost five of its own officers. Targeted by a gunman. I said that that killer would not be the last person who tries to make us turn on each other, nor will todays killer. It remains up to us to make sure that they fail. Reporter at a News Conference yesterday, the east baton rouge sheriff stood in front of the camera, somewhat emotional, he said, quote, this is not about gun control. It is about what is in mens hearts. All right, david, thank you so much. Gavin long carried out the shooting on his 29th birthday. He was carryiwearing all black carrying a rifle. Im not affiliated with it. They try to put you with isis or some other terrorist group. No. Reporter last may, long filed paperwork in jackson county, missouri, to change his name to cosmo. He declared himself a sovereign citizen, part of a group that believes government does not hold any authority. In an fbi Law Enforcement bulletin, the agency called sovereign citizens a growing domestic threat to Law Enforcement. And said the fbi considers sovereign citizens extremists, as comprising a domestic terrorist movement. This video, which long said he was recording from dallas, after the Police Killings there, condemns any peaceful protests. It is only fighting back or money. Thats all they care about. Revenue and blood. Reporter his last tweet, posted seven hours before the baton rouge shooting, proclaims, just because you shed your physical body doesnt mean that youre dead. Baton rouge is putting attention on Convention Security this morning here in cleveland, worries of a violent protest, go back months. But pressure increased after a waive of violence from orlando, to dallas to freance. A checkpoint outside the quicken loans arena, with concerns about demonstrators carrying open weapons. But anyone coming here will face an army of Police Officers and federal agents and security checkpoints just like this one at every turn. The streets around quicken loans arena are ringed by steel fencing and concrete barricades. Every person, every vehicle, trying to get to the Convention Site is stopped and searched. If cleveland hosted a super bowl, you know, it would be a huge event. It would be a lot of barriers going up and officers Walking Around to make sure officers are safe. Its the same thing. Cleveland mayor, frank jackson, says the recent killings of Police Officers has forced adjustments in the citys security plans. I noticed that after trump chose pence, you tweeted and said this was dis orienting, because you talked to pence in which he talked about his dislike of many of the things that trump espouses. Ive been a huge fan of governor pence over the years. Ive encouraged him to Seek Higher Office in previous elections, and during the primaries, i spoke to him and lets just say he shared deep skepticism of trumps fit with the republican party, and it is consistent with what he said publicly, actually. He has spoken out when trump has said outrageous things. Do they share the same views on social issues . No, i mean, mike pence has been one of the leaders on issues related to religious freedom and gay rights, antigay rights on live issues. These not issues. This is not the area in which donald trump has been ee i immersing himself. Theyre at odds. Their vision is the same, do you think thats true . In the sense they both want to win the election. Thats the beginning and end of it. Thats more of agenda. Well, john, what new voters does pence get trump . I think he gets some Republican Voters who were nervous. In talking to delegates here and party folks here, theyre very nervous coming in. What the pence pick shows is not just donald trump has somebody around him who might be able to help him understand the traditional republican views, but also, send a signal to them that donald trump is listening when they say hey, you need to do things that are more part of the compulsory act. Theyve taken the signal. So he shores up the party. What he does going outward, outside of the party, that remains to be seen. I say this signals a major problem for the Trump Campaign. I cant think of a word so bad. Wildcard. Dumpster fire. Bombastic. Lunatic. Destructive. Polarizing. Division. Ignorant. I need a word or phrase to describe Hillary Clinton. Liar. Not trust worthy. Liar. Untrustworthy. Political opportunist. Raise your hand if you think the political system is broken. Forget how we got here. What do we do to fix it . They need to make us america again. I know that sounds trumpy. We havent focused on the issues that matter to us. People have fought and died for our rights including to give it away to two people who are so fundamentally ill equipped to become the commander in chief in this country. Who says hillary . Who says trump . Please explain why. I just think her message while might be faulted, tend to be more conclusiinclusive. After benghazi, i dont want to hear anything from her. I think in general she has compassion for American People and i believe she has the right tone and use the right words to unify people in the end. Youre so critical of donald trump. Then vote for Hillary Clinton. Never do that one . Why not . Because it is is not a sure thing. With donald trump, we may get something, we may get nothing. We are dead with her. The American Public is tired of having to vote for the lesser of two evils. Thats the bottom line. You guys agree with that . They are looking for that moment and they are looking for that inspiration. This is is not just a policy, but someone who says something that it clicks, its one of those where you cant define it, but they will know it when they hear it. Its a candidate they trust the least i think is the one who is going to win here and i cant call it based on how they responded. To make you feel good. Louisiana state police this morning say the gunman who killed three Law Enforcement officers in baton rouge was seeking out police. The shooting began when officers responded to a 911 call about an armed man. Cbs news confirms that 29yearold gavin long opened fire on officers minutes after they arrived on the scene. He was killed during a roughly eightminute shootout. Tensions have been quite high in baton rouge following the Deadly Police shooting of alton sterling earlier this month. Brad garafola, 459 ewe gerald and Montrell Jackson were killed. Manuel bojorguez has the latest. Reporter almost immediately people began bringing flowers to this hospital in honor of the three fallen officers. All three were husbands and all three were fathers. Montrell jackson was only 32 years old. He served the community of baton rouge for a decade as a Police Officer. His wife gave birth to their first child only months earlier. He cried when he saw the baby, when he found out he was going to have a son. Such a tragic loss. Reporter on july 8th, following Deadly Police shootings in baton rouge and minnesota, and killings of officers in dallas, jackson reportedly posted this Emotional Message on facebook saying, ive experienced so much in my short life. And these last three days have tested me to my core. But, he pleaded, please dont let hate infect your heart. This city must and will get better. Officer Matthew Gerald was 41, the former marine with the Baton Rouge Police department for less than a year. And the father of two young girls. East baton rouge sheriffs Deputy Brad Garafola spent 24 years on the force. He was just 45 years old and the father of four kids. His wife told a local newspaper her husband was working extra duty, the final shift before a vacation planned to start today. Vice President Joe Biden reflected on the loss. My heart goes out to those families and my enduring thanks for every Police Officer who kiss their wife goodbye or their husband and want to go home and tuck in their kids. Mark, ive been with you, i feel like many of these conventions before when you were the top advisor for george w. Bush in crafting his convention, what do you make of what trump is trying to do and whether hell succeed . The key to a successful convention particularly these days is make it unconventional. Every convention theres always been music, this is going to be different, out of the box, what you really want for viewers is to be different. I think thats the one thing this week will be. I dont think we know how yet, but given that its donald trump. On the other hand ive been the guy whos in charge of entertainment for Republican Conventions. Thats really tough. Once you get past Lee Greenwood and the oak ridge boys gets pretty thin pretty clear. Can you change the attitude about a candidate in a convention . Well, the opportunities you have four days that you completely control the narrative. Its pretty hard to screw up unless you pull in clint eastwood. But this is a real opportunity to control the dialogue, control the narrative and spin your message. Its one of the three times during the entire election where you have complete control and can really move numbers. You have your announcement, the debates and convention. Should get a bump. Should. What will be the definition of a Great Convention for donald trump by the end of thursday night . I think well, first of all as mark suggested, if nothing goes wrong, i mean, i have to say im as interested in whats going on outside the hall as inside this hall. And given everything thats happening in the country right now and the threat of all the protests and demonstrations here, its not inconceivable, and i dont want to be scare anyone about it but protests and demonstrations could overtake the Convention Given things weve seen. If they can get through this and keep cleveland secure and execute and get their message out in a clean way, by the end, that will be a successful convention. Thats one other story line. But what about the story line of the relationship between trump and pence, or the lack of relationship. I mean, what did you make of their chemistry or lack of chemistry on requests60 minute what you dont want is number two somebody takes over the screen, which newt would have done and christie would have done. I think its a good pick. Number two solid salute and be there. But do you want to simply dominate him so that it looks like he has no air to breathe . You know, i think that mike pence is a solid pick, a safe pick. And, you know, all the things for people who had a question about donald trump, pence is the right pick. If they want somebody calm, ass awesome on reques60 minutes have them on the same screen. I doubt they will ever be on screen together again possibly until election day. Im not sure they will know who each other are until november 8. Theyre describing it as excruciating and painful to watch and an awkward marriage. I have to say these are all to me im with mckinnon on this point. Do voters care about whether theres chemistry . It would have been worse if he were stepping on voters ultimately vote for the top of the ticket. To the extent trump he did not go with his gut with christie or with gingrich, which i think is what he wanted to. But good sign he decided not to. The notion of party unity, notion of reassurance and saying i can be tamed a little bit. So what does he bring to the table for you . Look, all that matters in selecting a running mate is does the guy meet the bar of ready to be commander in chief on day one, does the press think hes qualified. No one in the press has raised questions about pences qualification. Thats a win. Move on. Turn the spotlight back to trump and back to Hillary Clinton. Which is what they want to do. So going to beat up on Hillary Clinton and beat up on bill clinton during this convention. Thats what its all about. Isnt the theme for today benghazi . I can tell you Paul Manafort was very cleveland there was some sense of chemistry between them and the body language wasnt alarming. It was okay. And that is a good place to begin as far as they are concerned because this is an evolutionary process for them both. That clip we just played where mike pence says he speaks from his heart and donald trump says, no i dont, i speak in my head. They are still learning each other. Its a process. But the vp doesnt overshadow the president ial candidate, i think everybody guess that. Zero chance that happening in this case. Just made the point that trump just made a point, look, if he thought i was doing something wrong, i would want him to come in and tell me. Right. He may not have that proximity to trump as the Campaign Goes on. They may be in different place. One of the burdens for this convention for the trump team is make sure that social conservatives are energized by the pence pick he is not an afterthought. She disagrees with Elizabeth Warren and tom vilsack and tim kaine on different things. You have to say how are you two aligned on pretty fundamental issues you disagree. What the country is going through, the country is seeing, feeling and responding to, this convention has to speak to in a way that either persuades the country or maybe doesnt. We will find out that the leader of this party is going to be able to harness these times and understand these times and led e the country in a different direction. If it fails to do this, the convention is a net negative. What does it tell you about the tone and image that the Trump Campaign wants to project, nancy . Strength. Strength im going to be tough.
