You wake up, skies clear in notice areas parts of illinois faces a massive cleanup after thursdays deadly tornado killing one person and hurt at least 11 others. The twister was captured on multiple cameras. One eyewitness said she has never seen a tornado so big that stayed on the ground so long. It hit just before dark cutting a clear path through the region about 80 miles west of chicago. In fairdale, illinois, there is almost nothing left. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The tornado tore through this town of 200 killing at least one person, and as you can see, the front of this house has been completely ripped off and according to officials, every single home in this town has been damaged or destroyed. Going right over that bridge. Reporter the halfmilewide tornado vile lengthily made its way across Northern Illinois taking out this semi. Go, go reporter sirens filled the air as it moved. Darkening the skies, and closing in on homes. Going through the subdivisions. Reporter this is what it left behind. 50 miles of devastation. Leveled houses buried cars and enormous debris fields. A lot of light weight houses didnt stand up well to the high winds. Reporter this restaurant in rochelle is now unrecognizable. 12 people were huddled in the basement when the twister made contact. Rescue crews worked for 90 minutes to pull them to safety. When it hit, definitely we knew it hit. We didnt know how bad. Reporter late thursday night, crews combed through each home in fairdale twice. 11 people taken to the hospital. Everything was marked, and searched and rechecked by another crew to make sure we confirmed there was nobody in there. Reporter volunteers at the Kirkland Fire Department are distributing food and clothing to hundreds. Were using the station for for the unfortunate that have lost everything. Its times like now that we really rally around communities. Reporter at least 15 Fire Departments as well as the Salvation Army and the red cross are hemping in the recovery efforts, but theres no word yet on when its safe enough for displaced residents to return home. We are looking at those pictures. Doesnt look like anytime soon. Thank you, adrianna. Tracking the threat for Severe Weather again today. Not as great as yesterday but a big area in a slight risk by the Storm Prediction Center from the midatlantic down to the gulf coast states near new orleans and into southern text as wellas as well. Check with your airline, clusters of thunderstorms pressing from west to east damaging wind gusts hail as well as a few isolated tornadoes particularly Late Afternoon into the evening. Meanwhile on the west coast, temperatures today in the 60s with pockets of rain spreading through the Pacific Northwest through the day today. Danielle, thanks. Sheriff deputies in Southern California are under investigation this morning, for kicking and punching a suspect. A news helicopter captured video of deputies brutally beating a man on the ground after they tasered him. Carter evans at the sheriffs headquarters in San Bernardino california with lawhat led to the violent arrest. Reporter authorities arent saying if the man was armed a the any point during the pursuit and also not releaseing the names of the deputies involved. The sheriff has take an look at the video and says what he saw was disturbing. This guy on a stolen horse. Reporter aerial footage from los angeles station knbc shows franz pusok on horseback running away from police. The deputy chasing him. Reporter officers fired tasers bringing the 30yearold down. Suspect being tased. Reporter while on the ground, two deputies unleash a fury ofss and punches to his body with his hands handcuffed behind his back. For nearly two minutes he is struck more than 50 times. I couldnt believe it. They cant do that. I see him put his hands out, behind his back and officers kicking him, punching him. Reporter officers say they were trying to serve a search want for Identity Theft but he ran away from them stole a horse and let deputies on a twohour chase. An attempt to take him into custody and use of force occurred. That use of force is now under investigation. Reporter hes had several runins with the law dating back to 2002 including driving on a sidewalk, attempted robbery and obstructing and resisting an officer in 2014. Im not going to stand here and say that hes perfect, because who is. What i saw on the television was thugs beating up my client. Thats what i saw. And these questions about what was he doing . What did they do . He was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. His girlfriend says they are now considering a lawsuit. Three deputies were injured in the pursuit. One was kicked by the horse. Two others are treated for dehydration. All right, carter thank you very much. We have a new perspective this morning on what happened before the Deadly Police shooting of black man in South Carolina. Video shows him pulling over walter scott. The now former officers mother has broken silence. Outside the Charleston County Detention Center where the officer is being held. Vicente, good morning. Reporter good morning. Michael slager kept in as Isolation Unit for his own protection. Whenever he moves to the jail all cell blocks along his path must be cleared out. For the first time were hearing how he first met walter scott. It began as a routine traffic stop. Walter scott tells him he doesnt have those documents, because hes in the process of buying the vehicle from his neighbor. I have a [ inaudible ]. Reporter slager returns to his cruiser. After 30 seconds, scott gets out of the mercedesbenz. Stay in the car. Reporter 17 seconds later scott opens the door again and runs off. Slager chases him off camera. Taser, taser reporter a bystanders cell phone captured the confrontation which left scott dead and slager charged with murder. I grieve for them and for us. Its such a life changer. Reporter slagers mother still hasnt been able to watch the footage. Hes a loving, caring person, and he wants to help people. Thats why he became a police officer. Reporter when you found out he was charged with murder what was your reaction . Shock. I couldnt imagine, this is michael. Just couldnt imagine it. Reporter thursday South Carolina Law Enforcement officials revealed their agents noticed inconsistencies at the scene including the multiple gunshot wounds in scotts back. The cell phone video taken by Feidin Santana confirmed their suspicions. It would make a huge impact. Reporter slager whose wife is eight months pregnant remains in jail. Possibly for weeks until his bond hearing. When you see your son for the first time what will you tell him . That i love him. That this is going to be a long haul, but dont give up. Dont give up. Because were all here for you. Nobodys leaving you. I dont want him to feel abandoned. Reporter Michael Slagers attorney tells us because he was an officer acting in the line of duty, he will not be eligible for the death penalty. Vicente, thanks. Hillary clinton is expected to announce her intention to run for president sunday. Likely to make that announcement online. Clinton is starting earlier than planned partly because of the controversy over using a private email account as secretary of state. The former first lady begins her campaign as a huge favorite to win the democratic nomination along falling just short in 2008. Clintons chances again republicans are not clear cut. A new poll in iowa putser in a statistical dead heat against three potential gop rivals. Voters put clinton behind rand paul who holds a narrow lead over ted cruz and jeb bush. The poll also shows clinton losing support after the email controversy. Cbs news political director John Dickerson is with us from washington. John good morning. Good morning, charlie. What does she have to accomplish in this announcement and what questions does she have to answer in this run . Reporter yeah. She has to answer the question why shes running. That question is being answered by her opponents and pundits saying shes the third term of barack obama just think its its her turn. Running to take advantage of the fact she would be the first woman nominee. She has to replace those answers with a rationale for her own candidacy so that voters look at say, ah thats why shes running and whatever she says has to do something that touches them in their daily lives. How will this campaign be different . Small. Thats the real challenge here which is to say that she is encased in this political celebrity. Got the secret service, got the big black suvs she arrives in. But she and this is what her advisors say is going to try to run in a way that is that connects with those voters nap shows two things. One, that she is commune cat with them at a kind of personal ledge and beats back the idea that shes taking it for granted or that she thinks shes inevitable or that shes bigger than the process, and so challenge those how you do that when you have the celebrity status she has. And that is my question. How do you start out small and slow, it seems, when youre name is Hillary Rodham clinton . When your name is that and also running in the sort of crazy media environment we now have with campaigns. It will about huge challenge, and theyre talking about having a multistage rollout of this campaign, which allows them to take many bites at the apple, get a little news on social media first then try and do the smaller rollouts and maybe do something after that a bigger, more traditional kind of event. But once you open it up once she starts into that process, its very hard for them to control, but again, they want to try and keep it small and intimate to create a new flavor and theme for a candidate who is so wellknown by the public. This campaign will be run by a combination of people who are clinton people obama people and others. Thats right. And then dont forget that group of people who are not on the inside, but who have relationships with the family relationships with the husband. The clintons circle is gargantuan. One of the challenges for the campaign is to have those who really do know whats going on who do have control over things to be the one thats pushing the message. Not people who have sort of tangential relationships with the clinton team saying a lot of things on the air which toned cloud whatever message theyll try to get forward. What will be bill clintons role . Well, theres the role they might want him to have and then the role he will take upon for himself. I think thats one of the Great Questions of this campaign. Supportive and loving spouse. Great advocate. Those are the things theyd like. Distraction and shiny objects might be the other thing. Okay. Thank you. Thanks charlie. Let the campaign begin. The white house said they spoke on the phone wednesday, and a poll of the cuban people out this week shows 97 think normalizing relations would be a good thing. 64 think it would change cubas economy, if not its politic. The big issue here is removing cuba from the state sponsors from terrorism. President obama has that power and intends to use it whn it comes to the economic embargo only congress do ta that. Thats a long way off. Still upon relations between the two countries is real but as we discovered here not without criticism or conflict. At a town hall in jamaica president obama took a question rippling through the region. Why is he normalizing relations with cuba and what does he expect to change in havana . We will continue to have differences with the cuban government, but we dont want to be imprisoned by the past. Reporter the president could announce cubas removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism at the summit of the americas when cuban dictator raul castro will attend for the first im and historic an official meeting between the two will occur. The substance and date remain unknown. Cuba is one of four nations on list of terrorism landing in 1982. Removing them allowing havana to buy weapons from the u. S. And open them up to u. S. Finance. The decision has to be taken for what it is which is an evidencebased decision on this issue of terrorism and a better way of defending our interests in cuba including our interests in supporting human rights. Reporter human rights remain a big issue in cuba. Political critics remain high. Dissident and castro supporters clashed here wednesday. Thats why Jose Luiz Garcia Perez traveled here and he is a prominent cuban dissident, invited as House Speaker John Boehners guest to this years state of the Union Address and he roughed up here by castro loyalists. [ speaking in Foreign Language ] told us cubas problems are not economic but political. That repression is constant and distance must have a seat at the negotiating table. He opposing taking cuba off the state sponsor of terrorism list and likely come next opening of a u. S. Embassy in havana. He has powerful republican friends legislatively trying to keep cuba on that list provoking a veto and no indication the republicans have votes to override it. Thank you so much. The guard, lawrence buckner, approached a car reportedly linked to an armed kidnapping. The driver shot and killed buckner led police on a chase in washington, d. C. , an officer ands suspect wounded in the shootout. The woman who was supposedly kidnapped is safe. Round two of the masters begin this morning with everyone in the field look up at one man. Its not tiger woods. He had frustrating moments in his first competitive round since february. Woods shot a 73 leaving him nine shots behind firstround leader jordan spieth. The 21yearold starts the day at 8 under par. His 64 on thursday missed the course record by just one stroke. He was on fire. Then we also saw 65yearold tom watson set a new standard. The twotime champion became the oldest player to shoot under par at the masters. Watson called his round of 71 a minor miracle. He looks great. He does. My san antonio, online version of the san Antonio Express news said mad men facing charges for a brutal hazing incident. A 20yearold texas student, hamm and a grews Fraternity Members stomped on a pledge pulled him around with a sledgehammer and set his pants on fire. He reach add plea deal. And murder suspect robert durst. The rambling hand written note comes after durst was last month charged in the murder of a california woman in 2000. We sat down with hill a rare form of brain cancer and gishen only months to live. In november fulfill add dream to play basketball at mount st. Josephs university and called it the greatest day of her life. She also raised 1. 5 million for research about her cancer. Lauren hill was 19. Very sorry to hear that. So brave. I remember that interview. So brave and so determined. So many people pulling for her. Back to fairdale illinois. A giant tornado killed at least one person. The sheriff says one of the. To lose their homes. Meteorologist mike bettes in fairdale where every structure in town was hit. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. We knew at first light revealing more damage in fairdale. Multiple tornadoes potentially touching down here in Northern Illinois and you can see the extent of the damage behind me. An apartment above and antique store below. Extensive damage here that actually cordoned off the town at this point and wont let anyone in resuming a search and rescue this morning. Still potentially looking for people. One fatality a woman in her 60s as well as many treated for injuries. The National Weather team will be here in town to determine the strength severity of the tornadoes. We know captured by Storm Chasers yesterday, dramatic images of the tornadoes ripping through the towns of fairdale and rochelle just outside of rockville and an hour outside of chicago. The governors activated the Emergency Managers here assists as well and potentially letting folks back into their homes later this afternoon, but a cool crisp windy morning, certainly different from what we saw yesterday. The judge on thursday ordered Joshua Corbet to stand trial for allegedly breaking into the oscar winners home as she slept. Among the 26 counts stalking burglary and weapons charges, showing us how bullocks panicked 911 call is a key piece of evidence. I hear someone at the door. Reporter in a frantic 911 call actress Sandra Bullock is heard begging for help as she hides in an upstairs closet. I cant hear anything. Im locked in my closet with the door shut. Reporter startled by a loud bang inside her home last june. According to prosecutors the man she saw in her hallway was Joshua Corbet. All i saw was dark sweatshirt and dark sweats. Coming up the stairs to my house. Reporter corbet shows no emotion as bullocks terrified 15minute call for help was played for the judge. Are they coming . Reporter two officers who responded to the scene testified when they entered the bel air home on june 2014 they saw corbet walking down a staircase. Said, im sorry. I love you, sandy. Reporter this detective read a handwritten letter police say corbet was carrying that morning professing his love for bullock and wants to have sex with her and mentioned her adopted son louis not home at the time. I will forever be thinking of you, and you are my wife by law and belong to me. Reporter officers testified that corbet had magazine cutouts of the oscar winner and a concealed weapons permit but was not armed. Later a search of his home revealed what police say was an arsenal of weapons, including a machine gun. Seized ten handguns i believe 13 rifles and a shotgun. Reporter corbet pleaded not guilty. His bail is set at more than 2 million. Hes there because he thought he had a relationship with her, albeit delusion the, thats what he thought. But he wasnt there to hurt her. Not a more clear case of stalking than this one. Reporter if convicted on all charges, he faces up to 12 years in prison. For cbs this morning, los angeles. This morning investigators in florida are trying to determine what caused a midair collision that killed a pioneering skydiver. She died wednesday during a jump over the city. She was a member of the team dubbed the boys in blue. That was something she was very proud of. Just 33 years old. Jessica edgington was already in the Upper Echelon of her sport. An elite skydiver who had jumped from an airplane more than 6,500 times but on wednesday afternoon her parachute collided with another causing her to plum tote the ground. James was her teammate on the u. S. National team. She broke open barriers for a lot of female athletes who are doing pretty well. She was our amelia air heart and dorothy hamel. She competes all over the world. Her special alt was canopy piloting or swooping which involved skimming over water at high speeds while navigateing obstacles. She was proud to be selected to the team. Its not just to be the only girl but kind of by b the girl with the boys in blue. Its a pretty good feeling to know i made it. Her death was the second sky dive to land this year. A navy s. E. A. L. Died during a training jump during january. The fatality rate for skydiver is comparable to riding your bicycle, snowskiing waterboarding. Busy sky zone. Theyre going to have their shares of accidents and sometimes the fatalities come in clusters. In a statement they said edgington frequently used its facility for military personnel. They added they found nothing in its equipment or procedures that affected the procedures. The faa and ntsb are investigating. That was a sad story. That is the question in the shooting death of a young mother of three outside denver. Ashley fallis was her name and her familys convinced her husband fired the deadly bullet but he insists she kill herself. 48 hours brings in its own private investigators to find answers. Reporter at the beginning of their new Years Eve Party ushering in 2012 there was no sign of any problems between tom and Ashley Fallis says her mother jenna. There was a lot of laughter going on they were having fun. Reporter tom got angry because he thought one of ashleys relatives offered her marijuana. We were the last ones to see tom fallis in a fit of rage, a fit of rage. Our daughter giving us hugs and goodbye kisses and thats the last we saw our daughter. Reporter just minutes after ashleys parents left tom and ashley were in their bedroom with their three small children in the house. Tom told police he heard a shot. He was interview by investigators. When i was in the closet i heard her gun cock. I was like what are you doing . I ran over to her and grabbed her head. I called 911. I told them that my wife shot herself. He shot her. I know he shot her. I did not shoot my wife. Reporter within days the evans police ruled it a suicide. Ashleys parents were outraged and wondered if toms job as a corrections officer with the Sheriffs Department had something to do with that. Were you expecting tom to be charged . Yes. Oh yes. We were shocked they let him go. Reporter ashleys familys suspicions continued for the next two years. And then a local reporter with tv station kdvr named Justin Joseph got a tip. He began his own investigation and found witnesses who had seen and heard something startling. I saw him walk out and his parents were standing outside and hes saying oh, my god, i cant believe i did it. Three or four times and his parents said, what . What are you saying . I remember i heard them distinctly say i shot her. Reporter the new information led police to reopen the case with a different Colorado Department investigating. And 48 hours hired forensic animator, scott rotor, to review the Available Evidence and analyze whether this really was a suicide or something else. What happened to her is consistent with suicide . It could be . It could be but somebody could have also pulled that trigger and it could be a murder. Reporter so do you believe the Evans Police Department rushed to judgment on this case . Absolutely. Erin moriarty joins us at the table. They reopened the case. What happens now. They did a new investigation but did it much later from the event, he was indicted and hes been charged with murder. But the real problem is now, they gave back evidence. They gave the gun back to him when they closed it as a suicide. But i think what happened here was that the evans police a small Police Department, they violated this Cardinal Rule that when theres an unexplained death you look at it first as a homicide and then you rule that out and then you can look at suicide. They did the opposite. It does seem to be conflicting stories in your story. Well, it is. And the problem is he is very convincing. And he was a member of the Sheriffs Department. He worked in corrections and i think the Police Department these young officers and small inexperienced officers took his word for it too quickly. All right. When the navy originally created the blue angels way back in 1946, not only were they all men, the pilots they also had to be patch lores. Now almost 70 years later the squads mission of inspiring the next generation stays the same but the pilot roster has come a long way. First 200 already. Liftoff. Reporter its the ride of a lifetime. Pilots like her have spent a lifetime training for it. I got my pilots license when i was 17. I wanted to fly the fastest thing they could give me and this is it. The hornet is it. Reporter im just the passenger. The captain is carrying on the legacy of the most famous flying squad in america, the u. S. Navy blue angels. For eight months each year this team of ten pilots tour air shows around the country, demonstrating staggering feats of aerial precision, sometimes as close as 18 inches apart. Youre looking at the paint scheme, the rivets on the side of the aircraft. Reporter since the team launched in 1946 a hall a bill billion spectators have watched the blue angels. These are the sites theyre used to seeing. This isnt. The clouds are better. Theyre not as blue. Reporter u. S. Marine corps captain katy higgins is the first female pilot in the 69year history of the team. I saw the blue angels fly when i was a young kid. I was definitely inspired by that. Shses a Third Generation pilot. Its a great family legacy to have thats for sure. Reporter now shes providing the inspiration. I think by including a lady on the team that just shows little girls and guys that women can do whatever they put their mind to. Have little girls come up to you and said that . Definitely. Little girls came up to me and toldmy they didnt know ladies could fly the aircraft that is correct they could be in the cockpit. Theyve been in the military cockpits for more than 20 years. Why did it take so long for a woman to get with this team . We do a very thorough interview where they get to know each one of us and fiechbld the right person for the team next year and so it just so happened that they havent had a female pilot thats fit quite perfectly. Its not that we werent ready. Were just looking for the right person. Captain tom froshangels, one of 17 officers who voted for higgins on the team. What are the challenges of integrating a female pilot on the team. I would say we havent had any. Any female can fly any aircraft in our inventory. Are there any institutional chamgs . I dont believe sew. But it was challenged last year when a former commander was found guilty when he was found to have committed obvious and repeated offenses and lewd practices. What do you say to people of the timing with making captain higgins a pilot of the blue angels convenient. When we selected members of the team i was give zero pressure to select a female. Honestly i would tell them to watch the demo. They cant tell the difference between i and the other two pilots on here because i fly it just as well as they do. Reporter that quickly becomes obvious to anyone sitting in the cockpit of the angels c130 nicknamed fat albert. A plane higgins flies. It may not go as fast but it is every bit as integral to the show and the ride is no less thrilling. Taking off. 130, 120. Push number, push number. I definitely didnt come on the team to break any barriers or anything like that. That definitely wasnt my agenda. It just so happened that i was the first female to perform in a demo here and if that is inspiring to people, if thats inspiring to little girls around the country then im doing my job. Thats so cool. It was cool. You know i was a bit skeptical because she is flying the c130. Shes not flying the jet. Shes not flying the hornet. And i asked her that. I said you know why arent you flying that plane. She said thats my choice. This is the bird i love. So, you know maybe in another if youres. What was it like for you in. For me . Yeah.
