This mornings eyeopening is presented by toyota, lets go places. Welcome to cbs this morning. Gayle king is off. As you wake up in the west were learning more about a Second Health care worker infected with ebola in texas. A woman who worked on the team treating Thomas Eric Duncan. He died last week as the first person diagnosed with the virus in the United States. The new patient lives alone and has no pets. Hazmat crews began cleaning her apartment this morning. Officials say her neighbors were quickly notified. The cdc is reaching out to anyone else who she may have had contact with. At a News Conference this morning, officials said more ebola cases are a very real possibility. The only way we are going to beat this is person by person moment by moment detail by detail. It may get worse before it gets better. But it will get better. Texas Health Presbyterian hospital says its doing everything it can to contain the virus but that facility is getting a scathing review this morning. Some hospital workers are worried about this second infection and what it means for their safety as well. Manuel, good morning to you. Reporter good morning and good morning to our viewers in the west. Now that a second worker has tested positive there are 75 other Health Care Workers who are being monitored for possible exposure to the original ebola patient. Nurses here are nonunion. Now the nations largest Nursing Union is saying it is speaking on behalf of nurses here who fear retaliation for exposing flaws that may have led to their coworkers infection. It shouldnt have happened to her. It shouldnt have happened to mr. Duncan. It shouldnt have happened to anyone. Reporter in a Conference Call tuesday evening, the union, National Nurses united, read a statement and answered questions on behalf of nurses who they claim work at texas Health Presbyterian. They allege the dallas hospital was unprepared to treat ebola patient Thomas Duncan. Were the protocols breached . The nurses say there were no protocols. Reporter according to the union, nurses employed by the hospital listed numerous flaws connected with duncans treatment. Including initially leaving the patient for hours in a nonquarantined zone. Insufficient gear provided to hospital personnel. And unmandated hospital training procedures and policies is for handling patients with ebola. The message to the nurses was, its up to you. It is not up to the nurses to be setting the policy the nurses say in the face of a virulent disease. Reporter texas Health Presbyterian hospital responded, saying patient and employee safety is our greatest priority and we take compliance very seriously. We have numerous measures in place to provide a safe working environment, including mandatory annual training. 26yearold nurse nina pham who helped treat duncan at the hospital tested positive for ebola on saturday. Her condition has been upgraded to good. In a statement yesterday, she said, i am blessed by the support of family and friends and am blessed to be cared for by the best team of doctors and nurses in the world here at texas Health Presbyterian hospital in dallas. They did not identify the nurses who made accusations and were unwilling to say how many were part of that statement. The hospital said it will respond to any concerns brought up by employees. The cdc has acknowledged it did not act fast enough here in dallas and would not be surprised to see additional cases. Manuel, thanks. Health and Human Services secretary Silvia Matthew burrwell joins us from washington. Does this latest patient suggest to us there are things we dont know about this virus or two, are we simply making too many mistakes . With regards to transmission at this point, we havent seen any alterations of the virus that give us a concern that what we know after 30 years of treatment and containment of ebola, that the protocols do work. What i think we do know is and we have put in place, additional steps with regard to the oversight to make sure those protocols are implemented. Yesterday, director frieden spoke to the fact that two of the emory nurses are on the ground doing peer to peer training. 24 7 site managers who will oversee the taking on and taking off of equipment. And we have added additional cdc staff on site. There is a cdc epidemiologist quoted this morning as essentially saying this hospital was making up protocol on the fly, in treating Thomas Duncan. And the nurses have alleged that duncan, the ebola patient who died, that his Lab Specimens were transported through the hospitals tube system instead of being separately sealed and delivered and thus potentially contaminating the entire system. Has that been checked out . With regard to the steps that are being taken, i think everyone knows right now we are in the middle of an investigation. To understand where there was a breach so we can better understand how to help the first Health Care Worker and now the Second Health care worker. Well continue to work on that. As we do yesterday. Whenever there is something we see that we can improve upon and work with the hospital to do that, we will do that. Our number one priority is the care of that patient, as well as the safety of the Health Care Workers. I guess, secretary, we have been d from the cdc this is under control, that we know how to handle ebola. But the protocols are not clear, the nurses are saying to them. Clearly, they werent followed. Now that we have two Health Care Workers who are sick at that hospital. One detail that struck me this morning. Of the four specialized hospitals, just four in this country specialized in this there are only like 8 to 10 beds. What if something wig bigger happens . And there are more patients . Are we going to be able to treat them . With regard to how to contain it, we do know that. Weve seen that containment over a period of 30 years. As recently as nigeria ya or patient care in atlanta. Weve seen hospitals whether it was car lot, well over a month and a half ago, taking actions. The person who came to them did not have ebola but they took those actions. Right now, well review and make sure were doing everything both to make sure people are educated at that point of entry. Health care workers across the country. They make sure they ask those questions about if there is a fever, the travel history. Thats step one. Step two is making sure the appropriate isolation occurs if a patient is confirmed with ebola. All right keep us posted thank you very much secretary burrwell, we appreciate it. Unless something is done to contain ebola, cases will rise dramatically. The bleak prediction from the World Health Organization. Debra patta is in the liberian capital of monrovia. Reporter here on the ground in monrovia while its clear theres a greater awareness of ebola, its not enough to stop the spread of the disease as the latest statistics from the World Health Organization show. Every week the statistics on ebola infections go up. And once again, the news from the World Health Organization is grim. Its been running about 1,000 cases a week now. You know were going to hit 10,000 cases unfortunately relatively soon in this epidemic. This is ebola. This is a horrible unforgiving disease. Youve got to get to zero. Reporter the World Health Organization warned the disease has spread to more geographic locations within the three infected west african countries and the death rate from ebola has risen to 70 . Here in liberias capital Monrovia Community leaders are desperately trying to reverse this negative trend. The lack of awareness and urgency is slowly being replaced with focused community action. Particularly in places like the sprawling slum of west point. Archie gebussy is a local Community Leader who runs a tight campaign to catch infections early and prevent the disease from spreading. Physically this house, five persons died last month. And as a result of the fact they dont have basic education to prepare themselves as people. Reporter his team of over 100 volunteers go door to door either day. We are educating them on ebola, how deadly it is. We try to identify all of the sick people. The best way to engage in is what were doing. Were engaging the community, engaging our people to make sure we identify it as soon as possible. Reporter efforts like archie gebussys are crucial to halt the spread of the disease. The campaigns are not wide spread enough and clearly not reaching rural areas. Its going to take a far bigger and more coordinated International Response to stop the rate of infection from increasing. Deborah, thanks. Stocks took another dive as wall street opened this morning. A New York Times investigation finds american troops were wounded by chemical weapons during the iraq war. The weapons were hidden or abandoned. David martin is at the pentagon with the report raising new questions. David, good morning. Reporter good morning. This has to be one of the bitterist ironies of the iraq war. Chemical weapons were discovered by american troops inside iraq. These are not the chemical weapons the u. S. Went to war over, but old discarded weapons that iraq had manufactured with help from western countries including the u. S. During its war with iran in the 1980s. The pentagon has previously acknowledged that some caches of these old weapons were found, but the New York Times has identified 17 soldiers who were exposed to the weapons. They consistfed the nerve agent sarin and the burning agent mustard gas. The soldiers are quoted by the times as saying they were told to keep their discoveries secret and did not receive proper medical care and did not receive the purple heart which goes to soldiers who are wounded on the battlefield. One former sergeant is quoted by the times as saying i felt more like a guinea pig than a wounded soldier. To add insuld to injury some of the shells were discovered in territory now controlled by the terrorist group isis although its not clear whether they could actually still use those weapons in this latest battle for iraq. Norah. Also one of the concern things in this report david thank you so much. President obama says the u. S. And its allies will continue attacking isis forces in syria and iraq from the air. The president spoke after tuesdays meeting with military commanders from more than 20 countries. One area of increasing concern is Anbar Province west of baghdad. And Elizabeth Palmer is on the front lines outside the iraqi capital. Reporter isis is fighting hard now west of baghdad. In Anbar Province. Thats where so Many American soldiers died in combat. And we were taken for a rare look at the iraqi forces line of defense out there. Its a fourmile drive across what used to be farmland. Now deserted except for the alal sentry. The general is taking us right to the edge. Were standing in the hotly contested Anbar Province. This earth berm built by the iraqi army to mark the very outer ring of the area they feel is secured around baghdad. Less than two miles away, behind the trees, is the village of asubayad. Who controls it . Daish is what the iraqis call isis. Back in may, isis controlled the ground were standing on. Just 13 miles from baghdads Main International airport. But iraqi forces pushed them back. Now a whole battalion is camped out here holding the line. Theyre taking fire too. Suddenly an isis mortar lands on the other side of the berm. The iraqis open up. And send back a mortar of their own. Its not likely to do much damage. But the soldiers hope it will discourage an isis advance. Then, another isis mortar comes in. Their aim is improving. Its time to go. Yes, their mortars are coming in closer. We leave the soldiers to this dangerous stalemate and head to the market nearby in abu ghraib an outer suburb of baghdad, where it feels perfectly normal except do you think there are daish, isis spies all around us . Isis wouldnt dare to show themselves here, he says but there are sleeper cells everywhere. And its everybodys nightmare that when they wake the result will be violent chaos. In fact norah, theyre already wreaking havoc here in baghdad with almost daily deadly bombings. All right elizabeth, great reporting, thank you so much. Specifically, theyre looking ahead to the 2017 election of their chief executive. They want to be able to pick whos on the ballot right now. That job is left to a committee loyal to beijing. Protesters have been occupying parts of hong kong to prove their point. Hundreds of police armed with pepper spray tried to disperse pro democracy protesters in the middle of the night. To shield themselves from that stinging spray, protesters have used umbrellas that have become the symbol of their movement. Police tore down barricades used by protesters to block streets. 45 people were arrested. Now this footage from a local broadcaster is emerged. Apparently showing police kicking one of the protesters. Hong kong authorities said the officers involved were being removed from their positions temporarily and that an investigation into Excessive Force would be launched. Clashes overnight were the most violent since september. When police in riot gear used tear gas to try to clear streets. While reporting in hong kong we found that show of force backfired. It was the Police Crackdown that brought you all out . Yes. Reporter wow thats what brought you to the streets . Yeah. Reporter this morning, Police Ultimately pushed protesters from the underpass they were occupying. Chinas government has stepped up pressure for hong kong to clear the streets calling the demonstrations illegal. But very little of this news is making it to us here in mainland china. Another young fighter cried because he objected to the kidnapping. This morning a meeting of Roman Catholic leaders, conservative bishop says lan mark on nontraditional families is unacceptable. They outline positive aspects of civil unions and cohabit tagss and care for families wounded by dwast and welcoming homosexual persons. They called the document a working draft that will be revised. The archbishop of new york is attending the bishops meeting in vatican city. Good morning. Charlie, norah, jane good to be with you. Its afternoon here. Lets hurry up. My past a is getting cold. Lets go, all right . We have some suggestions for you. But first, this is an important time in the church. And the question is is this an example of pope francis trying to take the church in new directions, open it up without changing or assaulting doctrine . Yeah, thats a good way to put it charlie. I would say youre on to something. Pope francis says the challenge that any successor st. Peter, any pope would have namely how to be true to the timeless unchanging teaching of the church, but yet trying to put fine creative, fresh, invigorating ways to present it. Pope francis has captured the imagination of the world in trying to do that. This would be a good example. How deep is the division about what he is trying to do . I dont think i know remarkable unanimity and enthusiastic backing of the holy fathers attempt to present the teaching of the church in a fresh, exciteing, enchanting new way. Theres unanimity there, charlie. There might be some good deep suggestion, you bet there is on the way thats being expressed. This was a draft document a first stage of whats going to be the result of our two good weeks here in rome. All of this is almost like im to hell the holy father arrive at a fresh new way to teach the timeless teachings of the church on marriage and family. Cardinal this report which was written by a committee handpicked by pope francis. I read through it. Its 11 pages. I want to go to the part that has become so concontroversial. It says this homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the christian community. Are we capable of welcoming these people guaranteeing to them a fraternal space . How Ground Breaking is it for the Catholic Church to raise even that question about whether the Catholic Church should welcome gay people into their communities . Look, you tell it to the archbishop of new york. I find it news that some people would still consider this news norah. You know this yourself. You are familiar with beautiful parishes at home who are already doing this who are already saying, come on in youre welcome here. This is a community of people who are trying our best to respond to the teaching of jesus christ to open ourselves up to husband his grace and to seek his mercy when we cant. Its a tribute to pope francis that hes affirming this positive embrace of the church and calling us to make it etch moredynamic. Why has your friend and colleague cardinal berk said this entire document which raises the question about whether gay people should be welcome to the church he says its confused erroneous, and this whole thing should be scrapped . Well, i think hes right. Hes picked up on the sign that a lot of bishops, and i would include myself feel that it needs some major reworking. But i can assure you a Cardinal Burke would be part of that enthuseiastic unity in thinking that anything we can do to welcome people into the church anything we can do to invite them hear again to hear the saving and invitation of jesus christ, lets do it. Hes for that. Hes got a good point and saying, boy, this document is a rough draft. Does it ever need major revision revision. Thats what were doing. Thats the purpose of this. You always take that initial document and rework it. Weve been laboring hard over the last two days norah, to do that. And so thanks for paying attention to that first draft. I hope you give us careful consideration to the ultimate one that comes out in a matter of days. This does seem to go rather significantly further than what a lay person might describe as mere freshening. One of the major obstacles we got today is the caricature the stereotype thats out there of constantly being no, no no no, constantly telling gods people what they cant do. Theyve heard me say often, weve heard popes, john paul ii benedict xvith and now pope francis saying the church is not about nos, its about a big resounding yes to everything that is good and noble and beautiful and dignified and genuine and liberating in the human person. Thats the message were trying to get across. That the church is some nag, some scold thats always saying no to the beauty the truth, and goodness of the human project. Were there to emphasize it to strengthen it to affirm it. Cardinal well wait for the final draft. See you back in new york. The Group Freedom is making a documentary about the flight of an eagle. We were talking about this putting gopros on animals. Just spectacular. Beautiful. Waiting for it to splash into a pool like yesterday . Yeah. Go under water. In our morning rounds women work for two Silicon Valley giants just got an unusual bump in their benefits. Apple and facebook are offering to pay for female quloiemployees to freeze their eggs for nonmedical reasons. Joanna coles is editor and chief for cosmopolitan. You think this is a good idea . It is a nice benefit if you want to freeze your egg. The technology has recently going from being experimental to actually being a procedure this people are saying, okay this may work. So i think if you want the option to do it, its great if your xwlouers will pay because its 20,000 h ch is expensive, especially if youre young and youre not real difficult to commit to having kids yet. What about the counter argument that this is Companies Offering a benefit like this but its a bandaid instead of doing things like paid family leave, child care and Flexible Work care arrangements . A lot of companies are actually offering those benefits too. I think that what were seeing here is a sort of new Technological Development thats going to really impact young womens lives. I actually think that this is going to be one of those gifts that parents want to give their kids on graduation. And im not necessarily saying its a good thing, but theres been so much panic around womens fertility that i think parents are going to say, welldone, youve got your degree. Heres 20,000, now freeze your eggs. I dont think we want to go into full panic mode about it. I have had several people in my office at cosmo freeze their eggs and it was not being that work was such a tyranny but its because they havent yet found the right man to have children with. This makes women feel they have a bit more time. It wasnt a benefit. They had to pay out of pocket . They did. Well, and its an expensive benefit. I mean, im intrigued. If youre a woman and you decide you dont want urn chichildren, can you say, well, i would like the cash instead . Im wondering about, i mean youre not a doctor, this is not a medical question. But it is a fact that delayed parenting is one of the factors that does correlate with the incidence of autism older parenting, both mothers and fathers. Are Companies Offering the same benefit to male employees to freeze sperm . Its a good question actually. Im not sure. The irony is that the best time to freeze your eggs is as young as you can possibly do it, which is why i think it will become a graduation present because freezing your eggs at 35 the eggs are less viable than if you were freezing them at 21. A lot of people probably wont be in the Management Structure where you get a benefit like that. Not to get too much into it but its not that expenseive to freeze sperm. I think its a toll on the womens health, too. Youre injected with hormones. You harvest the eggs. Even the term is not particularly great. Any debate about this serious debate going on about this . Well, i think this is a serious debate charlie . Well, no we havent touched on this idea that women can have it all and somehow people are saying, wait a minute, this is one more effort to try to address that question. Well, i think anything that gives women more choice over their ability to have children is a good thing. I also think that you know women who have slightly woken up to the fact that fertility doesnt last forever. And were sending the wrong message to young women if were saying you can have a kid in your mid 40s. Its really difficult. Actually you cant. Anything that allows them to take control of that position is a good thing. And theres a big shortage of women working in Silicon Valley companies. There is more risk with sperm later in life than younger in life. Joanna thank you. A car crash sends a woman over a cliff and out of sight. One study finds 30 of teens admit they texted a sexual image of themselves. 4r5 say theyve received one. The atlantic takes a deeper look in its november summer story, why kids text. Good morning. Remind me. This was a Virginia Community and its not nothing special about it. This is stuff happening almost everywhere. Very middle american this community. Community, working parents, lots of kids and they woke up one morning and there were pictures of them that showed up on a public instagram page. Thats what parents woke up to and police woke up to. What did police have to do with it . They described a sexting ring. Its something we associate with sinister happenings like its being controlled. Police got immediately involved went straight to the school and started interviewing the kids and what they found was rather surprising. Do you know of anyone else who has naked picture on their phone. What is it . Child pornography. It was dozens, maybe hundreds. They left with bins of cell phones. Not everybody but many. I heard some kids were asked why they do it and they said its being sexual without being sexual. Thats an interesting concept. Theyre busy. What the kids would say to me some the kids this would be my way of being intimate. I would send a picture or he would. What did you think of that . Thats sad. That part makes me think seth more. No part of me said let them hang out and do it the right way. Theyre worried about what their kids are writing back to other teenagers and what theyre sexting. And what youre talking about is sending pictures. Yeah. Naked pictures. I think if you find a seth on their phone, i think of it this way. It doesnt create sexual dieynamic dynamics. Consider yourself lucky and find out more information who is your child sending the seth to. How old, what is the picture like. You shouldnt immediately say give me your phone, im taking it away because then you just lost an opportunity. What did you find about the girls who are more likely to say they have felt some pressure to do this . They want them to be their girlfriend or girlfriend. Is there any price to pay if you dont . Yeah. Some people are strong enough. Girls say no way and they say a much funnier way than i can say on the air, but, you know some girls feel that theres the pressure. They feel like look if youre teenager, your life is on the line on instagram and twitter which is where the kids in the school basically live and conduct their arguments and friendships. So you sfeel like youll disappear. Later they were posted on instagram. There should be a big distinction between boyfriend and girlfriend exchange pictures with each other and with nobodys consent they post your picture. I think we as a society should focus on that.
