He was planning to send mike tyson a thank you note and fruit basket. Those papayas are so savory. This mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. Zble welcome to cbs this morning. As you wake up in the west president obama is about to discuss a dramatic in escalation in the American Battle against isis. Well bring you live coverage as part of a cbs special report. Navy ships and war planes launched air strikes on isis targets inside syria. The u. S. Also targeted a group of al qaeda veterans. The u. S. Says they were planning an imminent attack on the u. S. David martin is at the pentagon as we await the president. David, good morning. Reporter good morning. The first air strikes occurred last night. It would have been Early Morning hours in syria. The opening wave of strikes took about an hour to complete followed by a second wave of attacks by aircraft from arab nations. The u. S. Navy fired a total of 47 tomahawk missiles from ships in the red sea and persian gulf. And air force and marine jets launched from bases in the persian gulf. They attacked isis targets at four locations inside syria, including headquarter buildings, Storage Facilities a finance center, supply trucks, armed vehicles and training compounds. The american strikes were followed by jets from arab nations, bahrain, jordan saudi arabia, the United Arab Emirates and qatar. There were a total of 14 strikes and all aircraft returned safely. U. S. Officials say syrian air defenses did nothing to interfere with the raids. The state Department Said the Syrian Regime had been warned ahead of time they were coming. Theyre coming to a total of 194, the number of strikes flown in that country. At the same time u. S. Jets were attacks isis targets, they also went after a second terrorist group, a network of veteran al qaeda fighters believed to be planning attacks directly against the United States. M american aircraft flew eight air strikes against safe havens inside syria in an attempt to disrupt the bomb making operations. David thanks. Mike morell is in washington. The former deputy cia director. Mike, good morning. Good morning, charlie. Give us a sense of the significance of this attack. So i think its important that the fight against isis has now gone to syria. But i think its even more important that we struck the group last night. The u. S. Central command press release said imminent plet floting. Thats what we were trying to disrupt. That means we had detailed intelligence on attack plotting either in the United States or western europe or in both. And so the eight strikes in northwestern syria, a long way from the isis targets, very very important. We hit explosive manufacturing facilities. We hit training sites. We hit command and control sites all in an attempt to disrupt them. Also, mike, we have called for syria president Bashar Al Assad to step down. And yet, his air defenses were not up last night. He let all these war planes fly in. Why . I think that was part of our advance warning to assad. Was to let him know they were coming so he didnt attack us. Had he attacked us we would have been forced to attack his air defense. And some other Syrian Military facilities. So i think it was a warning to him. And he listened to that warning. But we did not want to attack syrian sites specifically. I would bet, charlie, that there was a long discussion at the white house about the legal basis for striking Syrian Military units and i bet you that legal basis is shaky and i bet thats why we didnt do it. Mike, lets talk about the five arab nations that participated in this race. I mean an extraordinary coalition. Yes, and this is not not the first time that arab nations have joined us in a fight. They joined us in libya in our successful attempt to force gadhafi out of power. So this is actually the second time. Its very important, in my mind that they joined us. It demonstrates this is a Wide Coalition and not just the United States. Mike morell, thank you. U. S. Intelligence officials are watching for any signs that isis could retaliate inside the United States. Bob orr is in washington with the biggest concerns. Bob, good morning. Good morning. While u. S. Intelligence has not yet identified any specific threat from isis against the homelands, sources do tell us there are new worries isis could have retaliatory attacks. One of the big fears is a lone wolf who may not be on law enforcements radar could be motivated to act in the name of isis. That threat is always difficult to detect. The other worry is about the american and western european fighters. The fbi is trying to track more than 100 americans who have gone or tried to go to syria. Some stopped and arrested. Others were told are under surveillance. There may be some radicalized americans who have returneded from the fight without our knowledge. We also know that at least three americans so far have been killed fighting with militant groups with isis and the others are on the battlefield. At the same time isis is manning a very aggressive social Media Campaign aimed at recruiting more young radicals. Theyre posting web videos like this one with isis logos over knockoffs of Popular Video games like grand theft auto 5. Also were seeing westerners appearing increasingly in isis propaganda videos. This is a new take called the flames of war. It features a masked man who speaks in english. They believe hes an american maybe a canadian. And right now the u. S. Government is working hard to determine who that man is and who his associates may be. This is a cbs news special report. Im charlie rose with Norah Odonnell in new york. President obama is about to comment on last nights air strikes against isis and other militants inside syria. The president is getting ready to leave the white house. He will be going to new york for todays u. N. Climate summit. These attacks by u. S. War planes and ships are the first inside syria. American forces have hit isis targets inside iraq nearly 200 times. Five arab nations from the president s coalition against isis took part in last nights mission. Major garrett is at the white house. Major, what do you expect to hear from the president . Reporter we expect the president to describe the air strikes in syria as highly successful in a military context. It is important to point out that the United States through its u. N. Ambassador Samantha Power informed the Syrian Government that the air strikes were coming but warned the syrians. No advance warning was given on the timing or target and no permission was sought for these air strikes in syria. Also in new york just moments ago, the iranian president Hasan Rouhani declared the air strikes illegal and said syria should have been asked for permission. Norah, we expect the president at the microphones of the south lawn in just a moment. We see the president now walking across the south lawn as he approaches the podium. He is coming to new york to meet with leaders here at the u. N. Here is the president. Good morning, everybody. Last night on my orders, Americas Armed forces began strikes against isil targets in syria. Today, the American People give thanks for the Extraordinary Service of our men and women in uniform, including the pilots who flew these missions with the courage and professionalism that we have come to expect from the finest military that the worlds ever known. Earlier this month i outlined for the American People our strategy to confront the threat posed by the terrorist group known as isil. I made clear that as part of this campaign the United States would take action against targets in both iraq and syria. So that these terrorists cant find safe haven anywhere. I also made clear that america would act as part of a broad coalition, and thats exactly what weve done. We are joined in this action by our friends and partners saudi arabia the United Arab Emirates jordan bahrain, and qatar. Americas proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with these nations on behalf of our common security. The strength of this coalition makes it clear to the world that this is not americas fight alone. Above all the people and governments in the middle east are rejecting isil and standing up for the peace and security that the people of the region and the world deserve. Meanwhile, we will move forward with our plan supported by bipartisan majorities in congress to ramp up our effort to train and equip the Syrian Opposition who are the best counterweight to isil and the assad regime. And more brudoadly, over 40 nations have offered to help in this comprehensive effort to confront this terrorist threat to take out terrorist targets, to train and equip iraqi and Syrian Opposition fighters who are going up against isil on the ground, to cut off isils financing, to counter its hateful ideology and to stop the flow of fighters into and out of the region. Last night, we also took strikes to disrupt plotting against the United States and our allies by seasoned al qaeda operatives in syria who are known as the khorasan group. Once again it must be clear to anyone who would plot against america and try to do americans harm that we will not tolerate safe havens for terrorists who threaten our people. Ive spoken to leaders in congress and im pleased that theres bipartisan support for the actions that were taking. America is always stronger when we stand united, and that unity sends a powerful message to the world that we will do whats necessary to defend our country. Over the next several days i will have the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister abadi of iraq and with friends and allies at the United States to continue Building Support for the coalition that is confronting this serious threat to our peace and security. The overall effort will take time. There will be challenges ahead. But were going to do whats necessary to take the fight to this terrorist group. For the security of the country, and the region and for the entire world. Thanks god bless our troops, god bless america. And there you have the president of the United States speaking for the first time after the u. S. And some arab nations launched these coordinated attacks inside syria. Interesting to hear charlie, the president describing them as successful and more of the strategy continues. And ending by saying well do whats necessary. In order to make sure yeah. And specifically for the first time, ive not heard him mention the khorasan group, something that mike morell mentioned a week ago, this group inside syria that may be plotting an imminent attack on the United States. He mentioned the five countries, the United Arab Emirates ba ran, qatar, jordan. Did not mention the egyptians, did not mention some other groups that might be urged to participate. This incident was not connected to the u. S. Air strikes in syria. And with the u. S. Now unleashing air strikes in syria and building a coalition against isis, fox news Host Bill Oreilly is offering his own solution a new volunteer mercenary army. Oreilly is also here with another provocative idea about one of the most colorful and outrageous generals in american history. It is the focus of his new book killing patton. Bill oreilly joins us for an interview youre seeing first on cbs this morning. Welcome back. Thanks for having me in. I appreciate it. Well, we want to talk about general patton in your book. But first, the strikes in syria against isis. Is the president doing the right thing and doing it the right way . Yes, hes doing it a little too late. Well, a lot too late but hes doing the right thing. And whats your idea that might have made it an alternative . Well, intelligence sources tell us at the factor that they were intensely advising president obama a year ago, one year ago, that this isis army was growing in power and financial strength and it had to be neutralized. But the president did not want to take action for a number of reasons. So it did. And obviously now, its a threat to the world, and since the world is largely cowardly the United States has to lead the way to try to degrade these people and wipe them out. And last night, you offered an idea that some say is very unique on your show. You called for a mercenary army to defeat isis. How would that work . Under congressional approval and authority, the United States would train and pay well mercenary troops from all over the world. We would select them. Special forces would train them. 25,000man force. To be deployed to fight on the ground against worldwide terrorism. Not just isis. And that would be a permanent force. And it would take the politics out of it. Whats killing the west now in this fight on terror, and putin as well is the politics of it. Cant get anything done quickly. Cant mobilize facts. So its going to happen. This antiterror army is going to happen. Why do you always say that why do you say all the things you say with such certainty. Because im always right, gayle. You know that. On my show six months ago, i said to president obama, youre going to have to bomb these guys in syria. And last night it happened. Its not that im so smart. Its just that theres a trajectory of worldwide terrorism that has to be confronted. Everybody knows it has to be confronted. Yet they dither and dally and delay and they, its got to stop. Were going to have a beheading every day unless we knock these guys out. The people who make these decisions say its harder to be the person on the inside. Absolutely heard. And putting together five arab nations to launch this coordinated attack in syria to get Bashar Al Assad, to give him a heads up so he doesnt use his air defenses against our war planes, that takes time doesnt it . It takes time but i want to take that out. Look, its nice that jordan and saudi arabia helped us but it doesnt mean anything. Its all symbolic. Its not propaganda. Its a p. R. Thing. But you dont want another story about the u. S. Attacking in another muslim country. Thats right. We dont want the United States to have to do it all. Which is why this army would be funded, by the way by the coalition, not the United States. But it would be under the United States authority, trained here. But we have to take the politics out of worldwide terrorism. We have to. And thats the way to do it to have a strong nato coalition because they would be involved with this and then a 25,000man force to be deployed where we need them. So mike morell who you know former number two at the cia was here a week ago talking about this group called khorasan, this offshoot of al qaeda, which the u. S. Central command in their Statement Last night said they attacked this specific group and bombmaking facilities because of an imminent threat to the United States. Sure. But this makes my point. These guys, theres just a million of them. They just pop up, whether its yemen, somalia, here or there. You just cant have this unwieldy apparatus saying well, maybe well get them, but maybe we have to go over here. We have to have a central command, an authority to fight worldwide terrorism. And we dont have it now. And i dont think we have the will yet. Its going to take another 9 11 attack for the world to get the will. Well, i think the will is growing, bill. But i tell you what i was telling gayle this in the green room. If patton were the head of the joint chiefs of staff, believe me, this war would be fought in a different way. You say it would be a whole different ball game because because patton would bring the battle to the enemy. Dont wait until youre hit and react. Weve been waiting. Everybody knows the evil that exists in this world. These people are nazis. This is the same mentality that hitler brought. Theres no difference. And now we have iran also giving us a hard time about nukes. Theyre right in the shadows here. And you have putin trying to resurrect the stalinesque expansion. We have a lot of problems here and we better wise up and start to get a Central Authority to deal with some of it. Yeah, your book comes at a very interesting time. You clearly see parallels and were going to talk about it in the next halfhour. But theres a big New York Times ad. Are you familiar . The New York Times is thrilled about having me he goes yes ive seen it, i wrote it. The most anticipated book of 2014. Were going to talk to you about your book coming up in the next halfhour. In our next hour bill brings us more fascinating details from the book, its called killing patton, including how hitler could stay awake in his underground bunker. It involved cocaine eye drops. More real news ahead, including president obama talking about the new battleground against isis. American attacks inside syria. But first, heres a look at todays eye opener at 8 00. Must be clear to anyone that we will not tolerate safe havens for terrorists who threaten our people. First american strikes inside syria occurred shortly after 6 00 p. M. Pacific time last night. Lets talk about these five arab nations that participated in this raid. Extraordinary coalition. Very important in my mind that they joined us because it demonstrates this is a Wide Coalition and not just the United States. Theres a trajectory of worldwide terrorism that has to be confronted. They dilly and dali. Theyve got to stop. Many Anonymous Sources on espns article had ties to rice and could not be trusted. The mighty mights were all fired up. The kids ran into a big problem. My gosh. Thats the cutest thing ive ever seen. Today was the opening of the u. N. General assembly here in new york city. 100 representatives from 135 nations in new york city all here to pay tribute to derek jeter. Im charlie rose with gayle king and Norah Odonnell. Minutes ago president obama spoke for the first time about last nights air attacks in syria. American forces with help from five arab nations bombed targets. The president said another mission prevented a possible terror attack. We also took attacks to stop plotting by seasond al qaeda operatives in syria. Once again, it must be clear to anyone who would plot against america and try to do americans harm that we will not tolerate safe havens for terrorists who threaten our people. David martin is at the pentagon with more on the raids. David, good morning. Good morning. About 50 u. S. And arab aircraft dropped a total of 200 weapons inside syria, most of them precision guided. U. S. Navy fired 47 cruise missiles from ships in red sea and the persian gulf. Navy f18s flew off the Aircraft Carrier george bush also in the persian gulf. While air force f15 Strike Eagles and b1 bombers operated out of land bases in the gulf. The strikes marked the first time the pentagons newest plane, the f22 stealth fighter, was used to attack targets. U. S. Aircrafts struck a total of 14 isis targets including training compounds, headquarters buildings, Storage Facilities, a finance center supply truck, and armed vehicles. American aircraft flew eight more strikes against a second terrorist group known as an organization of veteran al qaeda fighters believed to be activity plotting attacks against the u. S. Pentagon Officials Say initial indications are that the strikes were very successful but they also say there will be additional strikes as additional targets are identified. David, thank you. And the attack on highlights the difficult balance the u. S. Faces in the region. Clarissa ward is in london with more on this organization who is also fighting isis. Clarissa, good morning. Help us understand what this organization is and how they operate with others in syria. Good morning, norah. Khorasan is actually part of the front which season off shoot of al qaeda and its also the first Syrian Rebel Group to have been labeled a terrorist organization by the u. S. But these air strikes against them are not likely to be very popular on the ground. And thats because the big difference between them are although both aspouse the extremeist ideology, they have large support amonk theg the syrian population and at times even alongside the western back socalled moderate rebels that the u. S. Is hoping will fight this war. And that potentially puts those fighters, those u. S. Backed rebels, in a very tough situation because they simply dont have the weaponry or the manpower to fight the assad regime and isis and now potentially the front as well as at the same time. Charlie . Clarissa, thanks. One of the arab countries specifically threatened by isis by egypt. I sat down with him on monday, it was his First American Television Interview since his election. We discussed his role. Will Egyptian Air Force support air strikes against isis in iraq and syria . Translator do you need the Egyptian Air Force . Yes. Because the president would like it to be not americans alone against muslims, no matter how barbaric. Translator true. True. So will you support the president by egyptian strikes . Translator give us the apaches and f16s that you have been suspended for over a year and a half now. And . If you get them . Translator we said it before and we reiterate the fact that we are egypt is in a real and serious confrontation with terrorism. The idea is the coalition is formed and we are part of this coalition. And symbolism is there with our public announcement that we are part of coalition. He also says he believes moderate forces in syria can stop isis with help from the americanled coalition. A new study in the journal of the American College of cardiology says five is the magic number. Thats how many Lifestyle Changes it takes to reduce the risk of a heart attack by nearly 80 . Our dr. Tara narula is a doctor in new york. Good morning. Good morning. We heard about healthy living. What is this new five steps . It lays out a picture of what we mean by Healthy Lifestyle and how dramatically you can reduce your risk of a heart attack. The study followed 20,000 men who were healthy over a decade and if they adhered to five behaviors they could reduce the risk of heart attack by 80 . Healthy diet exercise quitting smoke, moderating their alcohol, and keeping their waistline in check. Apply to women as well . It does. It definitely applies to women. Even though this study focuses on men, the same factors play on women. I had another moment how many times do we have to keep saying this . We have to say it a lot. Its not sexy to talk about heart adeez. Is that what it is . Its not. Its so u its not exciting. The reality is its never too often to talk about the risk factors. Educate people and focus on prevention. So what is significant about this report since they are telling us what we already knew . I think the significant thing is bringing to light how big an impact you can make. This study showed you could decrease four out of five coronary events in a healthy population. Four out of five . Four out of five. Wow. We talk about medication all the time. But by changing your behaviors, you can really change the course of your destiny. Is one change more important than the others of the five that you listed . When you look at the five quitting smoking had the biggest impact. Of course. Decreased it by 36 followed by a healthy diet. Simply by changing your diet and moderating alcohol, you could decrease your risk by 35 . Thats only by changing two things. If youve been living unhealthy and make these changes now, you can see the benefits. Thats right. Its never too late to start the changes and never too early to begin. We cant tell people enough, you know, i say all the time again, was we really cant say enough. Thank you, dr. Narula. New york times is facing backlash this morning. I recent the New York Times critique of tv producer Shonda Rhimes is receiving a lot of backlash bought of its controversy statement. The reviews first line reads quote, when Shonda Rhimes writes her autobiography it should be called how to get away being an angry black and insidious stereotype solely in order to praise miss rhimes. Desiree rogers is now the ceo of the Johnson Publishing company. She joins us live from chicago. Desiree, good to see you. Good to see you. When you read that article, and i did three times, after you get past the headline its complementary of Shonda Rhimes and her work but does it matter when you start the line that way . Well the problem is the headline. Were reminded this is good enough for a black girl. You did well shonda. And were so often cast in typical rules or the jezebel or the shrew, and in this case miss rhimes has been cast as the shrew. She said that women in general dont have to be a stereotype. She said when shes paid to write about smart women. She said should i write about a dumb weak women . Is there a double standard here . Exactly right. One of the things that comes to mind for me this really isnt a postrachel postraich postracial society. White women are being asked to lean in. But a reminder that black women are asked to fall back. Shonda said final thing, then im going to do some yoga how come im not a angry the many times meredith or addison rants . From greys anatomy. Who have serious rants. Who do have serious rants. The idea is here why arent white women seen as angry white women . Well, you know this is the issue. You read the articles and you see accolades there. Why do we have to single out an angry black woman in that whole stereotype . And all the negativity and all the insensitiveness that brings to us. And then she talked about viola davis. I love this. This is another thing thats got a lot of people talking this morning because here we go with what people say dark skin versus light skin. She says ignoring the narrow beauty standards that some African Women are held to miss rhimes chose a performer who is older, darkerskinned and less classically beautiful than miss washington. What did you think . Why is she bringing you know dividing people up. This whole issue of lighter skin. Darker skin. The whole context of the american classic beauty. Something that black women deal with every day. You know weve just recently see natural hair and all of these things. It is deep and painful to be reminded of the stereotypical ideal of the real beauty. The New York Times said look, we had some blind spots. We ignored them. How do we get past that . When we look at the lineup of critics are any of them africanamerican or the minority groups . So people would know this is not a headline you want t use in describing someones work on the eve of what should be a tremendous week for shonda. We should be talking about how great it is that this woman is able do this. Exactly right. And talented and creative producer whose had hit after hit. After hit. Thats what we say about Shonda Rhimes here at cbs this morning. Desiree, we thank you. And angry black women, not so. Not so guys. Not so. Good to see you. And George Patton was an outspoken general in world war ii, but that may have gotten him killed long after headlines. Driver of a stolen van hit the puppy but after surgery and a fractured leg and pelvis gordo was cleared to leave the back. George oreilly bring his new book with a general pattonesque look at life. Patton has little patience for soldiers that go at wore methodically. Time the enemy, hit him fast to get him off balance then smite him down. Thats the way. Grip your weapon dont be gripped by supply. It isnt book, its almost medieval, but its the patton way but it works. That was a news report from cbs own walter cronkite. Patton himself would be taken down but not by a nasty bullet but after a car crash just seven months after nazi germany surrendered. Bill oreilly lays it out in his new book killing patton. Good morning again. Up said in the book first it was reported as a minor fender bender . Yeah, the army treated it as just an accident, car accident. The general was paralyzed. He went to the hospital he never came out of the hospital. No autopsy, all the reporting, all the official documents surrounding the death disappeared. All witnesses on the car that crashed into patton disappeared. Its really you know people on the scene said the guy who was driving the other car was drunk. Yeah. That you could smell the strong smell of alcohol . Well he was never taken in never questioned if he was drunk. Why wasnt he arrested by the mps . The facts that were laid out and we do call for a reinvestigation by the Justice Department today. We want to know what killed this hero. I certainly dont believe this was an accident. You talk about the road itself sorry, charlie. I get excited. It was a road two cars on the road. Wheres the car turning into . Theres nothing there. We walked the road. Its insane. Theres several those are about this. Theres this interesting guy named doug bozotto. Yes. Tell us about him. Yes, he was an oss agent. And received many awards for action . Yes, and he preceded the cia. Right. Donovan had a close relationship with stalin and the soviet apparatus. Patton didnt like the russians. He wants to fight the russians all right . Stalin didnt want to fight anymore, because the russian army was severely weakened after world war ii. Thats the whole genesis of it all right . And we take you through the last six months of the war in europe. We show you stalin what he was doing, hitler was doing. All the american generals fdr churchill, everybody. It all dovetails into the death of patton. The strange death of this big war hero who they down get into the ground fast enough. And who was he . He was an agent challenges he was paid by the oss donovan to kill patton. Now, i dont believe bozotto, even though he told a bunch and he told them in public. Right. But i dont believe his story, all right . I think that you know in the intelligence stuff, theres like mis this and theres false narratives here. Bozottos story doesnt hold up for us. But the soviet i think they got him. Why didnt they already kill him . You know gayle, because you stayed up to read this book last night to speak to warn about the dangers of stalin and the soviets. Whats the evidence of that . He had announced his speaking tour no whats the evidence that the soviets did it . Well, they had a program where they poison people. We take you right through the program where it was, all that, untraceable poisons. Patton the day before he died was joking with the nurses. He was paralyzed with the nurses joking with the nurses and drinking cognac with his wife in the hospital. All of a sudden, hes dead boom. Out of nowhere. And the doctors went we dont know why. Didnt have a heart attack. And then they couldnt get him in the ground fast enough. But he had a guard outside of his room, he was worried . Maybe. They were more maybe about the press athan any chicanery. You know who the big reporter on here was . Howard k. Smith. Howard k. Smith, the legendary guy he was on it. Whats your source . We have a variety of sources. We list them in the back. The three best world war ii expertsby could find it. Independently, they checked. Who are they the three best experts . I cant name it we signed a deal with them that they would remain anonymous. They dont want to be associated with me. Who does . Oh i dont know. Ill tell you, rose if you need to know. You also talk about hitler you raise serious things about him, liquid cocaine and you talked about flatulence why do we need to know he had a problem . In the killing books, we put you right in the hellacious battles with him. Hitler didnt get out of bed in the morning until he got eye drops put into his eyes by his personal physician morrell, full of cocaine. He was that debilitated. He was on methamphetamines. As you mentioned, he had an intestinal problem that you mentioned. Lets talk about patton. I love what you said about him, had really he hated cowards, so much so that he would be in the hospital slapping privates who were in the hospital recovering . That happened. That got him in a lot of trouble. Patton was an emotional man. He was an emotional man. A lot of people dont understand it. He was americas best general in world war ii. We take you through how he led stone in the battle of bulge. But he was an emotional guy and when his troops got wounded he took it personally. So when he saw people who he thought were faking it or cowards he would almost viscerally react. And he slapped a few of them. And he got in trouble with congress. But its funny because our enemies in russia and germany, they were laughing about it because they would have been shot these soldiers there. I cant fight anymore i have fatigue or whatever. They would have lined them up and shot them. So patton was an unique character. We tell you a lot about his personal view of life. And the investigation of this man has been how many . Theres been a few books written about it. The United States government they didnt want this. Patton is buried overseas a lot of people didnt know that. He wanted to be buried with his troops . No he didnt they wanted to bring him back to arlington and bury after a memorial service. They wouldnt let him come back. Im not going to tell you why. We have it in the book. Theres a lot of stuff floating around this death of George Patton that is not next. We got to go tell us who youre killing next . I cant. If i tell you, somebody else will write a book. Were working on it now. Bill oreilly thank you so much. And killing patton goes on sale today. One part of show business remains stuck in the 1940s. The lack of women on the silver screen. Thats geena davis in the 1991 classic Thelma Louise. Girl power. You love that movie . I love that. You know since then, gene naena davis has taken on roles from a pirate to a secret agent. Davis looks at how women around the world are portrayed in film. The findings suggested what we see on the screen theres little resemblance to real life. Reporter on the surface, the box office block bluster frozen looks like a Success Story for women. With two female leads and written by a woman as well it became the highest grossing animated feature of all time. The whole world was singing a girls song. Let it go let it go let it go when it came out, my boys were at a birthday party, and talking about movies. And somebody brought up frozen. And everybody, including my boys said, i love that movie. Thats a great movie. Reporter but actress geena davis isnt fooled. She said female centered Success Stories like frozen, bridesmaids or the hunger games bring up far from reality. We want to say, now its exchanged. But it doesnt, because the powers that be are still saying yeah, not might have been a oneoff. Do you want to step to the back of the car please . Reporter the actress may be known for thelma or no nonsense gotti. But the mother of three found a new mission. Yo, my blues brothers. Reporter while watching movies with her daughter she noticed a lack of female. And she wanted data to back up her suspicions. What did you find . The facialratio has been exactly the same. Its three men to every one woman in family films, thats for speaking roles. In crowd or group scene, females make up less than 20 . You knew that your vice presidency was never, ever was done as a stunt. Reporter because shes worked in her world so long davis is able to take her strategy straight to the studios. What i talk about when i go to the studios and networks is the world of the movie. Make whatever youre going to make. I dont say make the lead a female but i do say populate the movies with more female characters. Reporter davis newest Study Released yesterday examined 120 recent global films. One of the biggest gender discrepancies found on screen was in the workplace. Male characters outnumbered female ones 13 to 1 as attorneys and judges. 16 to 1 as professors and 5 to 1 as medical practitioners. Lets talk about why it matters. Because you say if they see it they can be it . Right. Yeah, thats our motto. And what i mean by that is, if girls can see female characters taking up half of the space, then they will think of that in their real life. Theres a great example on television in forensic science. There are so many female forensic scientists. Csi and boneses and realize the number that want to study that have skyrocketed. Its nice surprise that davis role is that of a surgeon on greys anatomy. She says she wants to make a lasting impression. All the fields we desperately want girls to get into science, technology and math if they saw characters doing that it would be perfectly natural for them to want to do that in real life. And it would be perfectly natural for boys to see girls doing just as interesting things as their characters are. Such important information, norah. Its interesting that spike in forensic science.
