Forecasters say hurricane iselle will strike tonight with winds and 75 miles an hour. Hurricane julio upgraded to a category 2 storm and could arrive this weekend. Hawaii hasnt seen a hurricane in 22 years, but state Officials Say they are ready. We are on hilo where hurricane warnings are up. Reporter good morning. The rain is already beginning to come down. Schools, certain businesses and some of hawaiis most popular Tourist Attractions will be closed today. Since 1950 only three hurricanes have made landfall in hawaii and now the fourth iselle, is expected to come ashore here in hilo in just hours. In many of the store aisles here on the big island of hawaii there is no calm before the storm. This is due to the hurricane. Reporter shelves are empty as people stock up on supplies. Some parts of the islands may see as much as a foot of rainfall by friday. Which could bring Power Outages, flash floods and landslides. That has Emergency Management officials worried. On wednesday they discussed what backtoback hurricanes could mean for these islands. More than 2400 miles away from the u. S. Mainland. Theres a limited amount of food on island at any one time. The majority of the food is barged in. Reporter bar knee chefney cheffield is a disaster coordinator. He said the storm could shut down shipping ports and cut off access to remote communities. Ivan piilani survived but said a flash flood washed away his home. Its real scary. You dont know whats going to happen. It just keeps going on and on to the next day and then finally you see whats left. Reporter and Emergency Management officials we spoke to said if there was a major Natural Disaster they could have resources sent here from the west coast immediately. Charlie, if some of those supplies need to be shipped, it could still take up to a week before they arrive. Hawaii Officials Say people need to have enough basic supplies to last a week. Meteorologist Jennifer Robbins of our honolulu affiliate kgmb is tracking the double storms. Good morning. Here in hawaii were taking the warnings seriously. It will be a onetwo punch with a double threat. You can see right now both hurricanes of julio and iselle on the satellite image. The most concerning right now is iselle and the eye of the storm has held structure for quite some time. You can see how massive it is on the satellite image compared to the island chain. So hour by hour we will be watching this, but models take it as early as thursday afternoon as a category 1 hurricane moving in from the east towards the West Crossing the island chain, and we will see to some degree across the entire state very strong winds, rough seas and a whole lot of rain that were expecting along with it. The wave forecast is very dangerous for us. Accompanied with a storm surge, so with all of this all of our concerns are really high. What were going to see right at its heels right now is another hurricane. So even though we are preparing for the worst, were not going to be out of the woods with julio right at its heels. Charlie and norah. Jennifer thank you. A wildfire exploded overnight in northern oregon about 75 miles east of portland. Nearly 300 families along the Columbia River gorge were told to get out. High winds are pushing the fire over a ridge. So far no homes are damaged. This morning more evidence the government sees the Ebola Outbreak as a serious threat to human life. The cdc announced its highest level one alert wednesday. That means more resources will be devoted to fighting the epidemic. At least 932 people in four countries have died out of more than 1700 infections. Vladimir duthiers joins us on how the United States plans to offer support. The cdc took more actions in 2009 in the bird flu threat and in the aftermath of hurricane katrina. The centers for Disease Control in atlanta ramped its response to the expanding Ebola Outbreak on wednesday. The level one activation allows the agency to deploy additional staff to the affected countries of lie beeria, sierra leone and new guinea. At the u. S. Writebols son said she was tired from travels but is continuing to fight the virus. The one person in isolation at a New York Hospital suspected of having the ebola virus tested negative for the disease on wednesday. Mt. Sinai hospital released a statement saying the patient is in stable condition and is improving and remains at the hospital. The cdc also reported six americans in the United States have been tested for ebola. Thankfully, all of those tests have come back negative. All right, thank you so much. Russias government is striking back this morning against tighter western sanctions. President Vladimir Putin blocked imports of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish milk and dairy products. The ban covers the u. S. Canada european union, australia and norway. Russia also closed its airspace to ukrainian airlines. And the countrys Prime Minister says the kremlin is thinking about banning western carriers from flying over russia. Also in russia this morning, word that nsa leaker Edward Snowden will be staying there for a while. He had temporary asylum for a year. It ran out last week but now his lawyer says snowden is being granted residency for three more years. Secretary of state john kerry is making an unannounced visit to afghanistan. Kerry is there to talk with that countrys two president ial candidates. Theyre still fighting over the results of afghanistans june election. Kerry is trying to break that deadlock so the candidates can form a government together. The secretarys visit follows the shooting death of an American General in afghanistan. This morning the body of Major General Harold Greene is back in the United States. Greene is the highest ranking american officer killed in a combat zone since the vietnam war. Chip reid is at Dover Air Force base in delaware where the generals remains arrived earlier today. Chip, good morning. Reporter well, good morning. What is known as the dignified transfer of general greene happened here at Dover Air Force base less than an hour ago. Here it is. You can see the armys old guard carrying the metal transfer case containing general greenes body from an air force plane to a truck. Nearby secretary of the Army John Mchugh and chief of staff odiarno stood at attention. General greene was then driven to the mortuary on the base where he was received by his family. Now, despite his high rank as a twostar general, the process here was exactly like it is for every other Deceased Service Member who arrives here at dover. As for the attack that killed general greene theres an investigation going on now. General greene will be buried at Arlington National cemetery next week. This morning Officials Say computer hackers targeted a company that does background checks on hundreds of thousands of federal workers. That follows news of a russian cyber gang holding more than a billion stolen user names and passwords. Jeff pegues is in washington as new information on the data breach and the government impact. Jeff good morning. Reporter good morning. Federal investigators this morning are still trying to determine how much data has been compromised. A Senior Administration official tells cbs news for now in a highly unusual move most background checks have been suspended. The concern is the personal information of some Government Employees is at risk. Hackers recently attacked the computers of a Company Called usis, which conducts background checks for federal employees. A letter sent yesterday to department of Homeland Security staffers warned personally identifiable information about current and or former federal employees could be at risk. This comes after a disclosure that a russian gang now stands accused of the biggest ever cyber attack of personal data. A small private Internet Security firm hold security says over 1 billion user names, passwords and email addresses have been stolen from 420,000 websites. In midjuly alex holden the companys founder, realized the scope of the breach and discovered he was a victim. You start looking at certain pointers and even working with some of the larger customers to verify that what we are seeing has not been a honeypot generated by hackers just for us. It seems to be legitimate and our customers were able to confirm it. Reporter security analysts are concerned the hackers could ultimately sell the stolen personal data exposing Bank Accounts and leading to identity theft. Jim lewis studies cyber crime in his work with the military government and private industry. Last year 875 Million People had their online information compromised. Across the globe . Across the globe. This is just the latest in a long line of big data breaches that make money for these people. Theyre not going to go to jail so why should they stop . The fivemonth murder trial of blade runner Oscar Pistorius is coming to an end. This morning Closing Arguments got under way in the case of the double amputee olympic runner. Hes accused of intentionally shooting his girlfriend last year. Debora patta is at a courthouse in pretoria where prosecutors say pistorius testimony cant be trusted. Reporter the next two days are pivotal in the trial as both sides get a chance to sway the judges verdict when it comes to Closing Arguments. Its high noon for Oscar Pistorius, and he arrived at court this morning feeling the pressure. For the first time the fathers of both pistorius and his girlfriend reeva steenkamp, were in court to listen as the chief prosecutor kicked things off. It was clear in his mind what the truth was. Oscar pistorius was a deceitful witness who had systematically lied to the court. In keeping with the profession of an athlete, we argue that the accused was on a relay run. He started the relay run with the baton. You have to hand over the baton to the next athlete in order to complete the race. But if you drop that baton and if you stumble and drop that baton like he did, you cannot complete the race. You started the race by giving evidence. Reporter the state is arguing that pistorius is a rageful narcissist who had a fight with his girlfriend reeva steenkamp, and knowingly shot her while she hid in fear behind a locked bathroom door. The defense insists he is a paranoid anxious man who has an exaggerated response to danger because of his disability and he shot her believing she was an intruder. The Closing Argument is over 100 pages long and in it he uses every opportunity to show that pistorius was an appalling witness who made up a version to cover his own lies and inconsistencies. President obama says lawmakers are working to keep American Companies from short changing taxpayers. These accountants are saying we found a great loophole. If you just flip your citizenship to another country, even though its just a paper transaction, we think we can get you out of paying a whole bunch of taxes. Well, its not fair. Its not right. There is legislation working its way through congress that would eliminate some of these tax loopholes entirely. Cbs news contributor and analyst Mellody Hobson is in chicago. Good morning. Good morning. So why did they decide not to relocate . I think they looked at the tax savings, which is huge 4 billion they could save. They compared that to the backlash that is growing, the concern people feeling that these people who use this technique called an inversion, inverters are deserters were now hearing people say. They looked at that and also looked at the revenue that say they derive from the u. S. Government specifically medicare and medicaid which represent 17 billion of their revenues and said maybe we shouldnt put that in jeopardy. And what about the stock getting hammered . Well the stock got hammered because a lot of the investors say we dont get this added profitability from this tax savings and so they thought over the short term this doesnt look great for them. I think theyre making a longterm decision. I actually think in this situation they made the right decision because the other thing the u. S. Government said they may come back retroactively and tax some of these companies. Since 2011 theres been Something Like two dozen firms that have relocated. They saved billions of dollars in tax money. I can remember when i was covering the white house two years ago, this was a topic for the Obama Administration lowering Corporate Tax rates, and still nothing has been done. Why . What does it mean for u. S. Companies . Right. So the u. S. Tax rate has come down over the last couple of decades. It was as high as 46 at one point on the corporate side. Its now 35 , but its still the highest tax rate of any developed nation. Now compare that to someone like ireland, a country like ireland which is 12. 5 . You have a lot of these companies, particularly those that derive a lot of revenues overseas saying maybe i get a better deal by being somewhere else. But, everyone looks at this and says this is an arms race. You could lower the rate and then theres still going to be another country with a lower rate and maybe someone still defects. In a lawsuit filed tuesday they accused them of vie lathe their agreement by allowing the two to fall into a state of disrepair. Court papers say they failed to meet industry standards ranging from Hotel Services to overall cleanliness. Theyre calling it the trump dump. Its no different than mcdonalds who has license agreements with their franchisees. Certain standards have to be maintained. He owns the trump name and he licenses it to this ownership entity. But no because a, you know as a director you create the environment. But once youre talking to your partner that you spend all this time with and theres already something at stake, once they start looking at you, and they see when youre not answering the question they push further. I allow them to say sometimes it will go half hour. Sometimes an hour and a half. So we kind of disappeared. It became the couples own world. Whats the purpose of all this . Well the purpose i think is to get people to find something in the relationship and break through this is an online audience youre looking to so that people will think about their own relationships . Absolutely. Every couple is its own world. And when you see all these different worlds a couples therapist might have insights to intimacy of different couples. But otherwise you dont really see the intimate moments between couples. This way you do and then you ask, how am i in my relationship . I felt like i was eavesdropping on a conversation. Which one of my friends would you sleep with . When was the last time i disappointed you. Do you think i can improve my attractiveness . All of the questions that you asked really made you think . This is one that was surprising in which people talk about love at first sight. When you think about the first time we met, what do you remember . Oh, my gosh. Hes so adorable. You were in a suit that did not fit you really well. Total magic. I thought you were gay. It was awkward. Very awkward. It was epic. Yes. Yes. Where did you get the couples from . Im surprised at that. We have an awesome producer and she just reached out in the community. We kind of pretty much took anybody that would be willing to do it. Were they paid . No. Nobody was paid. A lot of samples to pick from. We took anybody and really as long as any relationship, there was something to talk about. Every relationship has a story. So, we just let them go. And everyone has that moment there is something between every couple. And i think an important part of it is we didnt define we didnt define them as couples so the rules of the relationship were irrelevant. Whether youre the viewer youre actually using the interactive experience we dont care how you define your relationship its just that youre connected with someone. And whats the most important thing you learned . Oh, lean in dont be afraid to ask the hard questions. And dont be afraid to answer them. You could look at people who you would read about in the paper and be like theres no way i would ever get along with this person. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. Reporter we heard what president nixon said when he announced his resignation. I shall resign by noon tomorrow. Reporter but we did not know what he was thinking until now. I didnt want to admit guilt. I ithought it would set a bad precedent. Reporter it was nearly ten years after he resigned. This week the nixon president ial library is releasing segment os testify 36 hours gagnon spent talking with his former boss. 36 hours is a very long time to sit and talk with someone. What surprised you most about his responses . I was surprised at how relaxed he was and how open he was, how emotional he was. With mixon, thats a finely calibrated thing. Im sure weve done some things wrong in this administration. His wife pat nixon tried to convince him to stay in office even wheel she packed their belonging belongings. For three days she didnt sleep at all. Packing 5 1 2 years of clothes and other mementos. Reporter the nixons gathered their family including daughters julie and trisha for a final shoot before leaving the white house. Tears were in everybodys eyes am hef snapped that picture, julie couldnt hold in the tears any longer. She rushed over to me threw her arms around me and said i love you so much daddy. By that time i couldnt say much either. They believed in him, they loved him, they knew what he wanted, which was to stay and fight and make his case. Mr. Nixon as he leaves the white house here to board the helicopter. In a moment that has now become iconic, the president boarded his helicopter on the white houses south lawn. This was the highest possible drama. Reporter pulitzer prizewinning photographer was covering the departure for time magazine. Thats the shot. Reporter he said of all the photos he took that day, this image is the one most people remember but its this one that he thinks this one is how nixon really felt. The first frame, he got on the step and looked back at the white house. He knows its the last time. Its a very bitter moment. That picture nailed it. A few minutes later jerold gerald r. Ford becomes the president of the United States. What do you think is the most telling . His in the oval office foot up on the desk but in the background, all the empty shelves. All of the nixon things had been taken out but none of the ford things were put in there. The first lady in curlers at the breakfast table and seeing her husband off to work before they moved into the white house. Mrs. Ford might as well be saying honey, have a great day and pick up the dry cleaning on the way back. A bright moment in a very dark time. What lingers is the image of a forced smile and a former president who had lost everything. Maybe in that moment he felt like it was a Campaign Stop but it was the last stop in his presidency.
