Hackers recently attacked the computers of a Company Called usis, which conducts background checks for federal employees. The fivemonth murder trial of blade runner Oscar Pistorius is coming to an end. This morning Closing Arguments got under way in the case of the double amputee olympic runner. Hes accused of intentionally shooting his girlfriend last year. Debora patta is at a courthouse in pretoria where prosecutors say pistorius testimony cant be trusted. Reporter the next two days are pivotal in the trial as both sides get a chance to sway the judges verdict when it comes to Closing Arguments. Its high noon for Oscar Pistorius, and he arrived at court this morning feeling the pressure. For the first time the fathers of both pistorius and his girlfriend reeva steenkamp, were in court to listen as the chief prosecutor kicked things off. It was clear in his mind what the truth was. Oscar pistorius was a deceitful witness who had systematically lied to the court. In keeping with the profession of an athlete, we argue that the accused was on a relay run. He started the relay run with the baton. You have to hand over the baton to the next athlete in order to complete the race. But if you drop that baton and if you stumble and drop that baton like he did, you cannot complete the race. You started the race by giving evidence. Reporter the state is arguing that pistorius is a rageful narcissist who had a fight with his girlfriend reeva steenkamp, and knowingly shot her while she hid in fear behind a locked bathroom door. The defense insists he is a paranoid anxious man who has an exaggerated response to danger because of his disability and he shot her believing she was an intruder. The Closing Argument is over 100 pages long and in it he uses every opportunity to show that pistorius was an appalling witness who made up a version to cover his own lies and inconsistencies. Norah and charlie. Thank you. Walgreens made a costly decision. Americas largest pharmacy is keeping its headquarters in the u. S. The stores Parent Company considered a move overseas where it could pay a much lower Corporate Tax rate. Investors didnt like the choice. Walgreens stock dropped more than 14 in the past two days. President obama says lawmakers are working to keep American Companies from short changing taxpayers. These accountants are saying we found a great loophole. If you just flip your citizenship to another country, even though its just a paper transaction, we think we can get you out of paying a whole bunch of taxes. Well, its not fair. Its not right. There is legislation working its way through congress that would eliminate some of these tax loopholes entirely. Cbs news contributor and analyst Mellody Hobson is in chicago. Good morning. Good morning. So why did they decide not to relocate . I think they looked at the tax savings, which is huge 4 billion they could save. They compared that to the backlash that is growing, the concern people feeling that these people who use this technique called an inversion, inverters are deserters were now hearing people say. They looked at that and also looked at the revenue that say they derive from the u. S. Government specifically medicare and medicaid which represent 17 billion of their revenues and said maybe we shouldnt put that in jeopardy. And what about the stock getting hammered . Well the stock got hammered because a lot of the investors say we dont get this added profitability from this tax savings and so they thought over the short term this doesnt look great for them. I think theyre making a longterm decision. I actually think in this situation they made the right decision because the other thing the u. S. Government said they may come back retroactively and tax some of these companies. Since 2011 theres been Something Like two dozen firms that have relocated. They saved billions of dollars in tax money. I can remember when i was covering the white house two years ago, this was a topic for the Obama Administration lowering Corporate Tax rates, and still nothing has been done. Why . What does it mean for u. S. Companies . Right. So the u. S. Tax rate has come down over the last couple of decades. It was as high as 46 at one point on the corporate side. Its now 35 , but its still the highest tax rate of any developed nation. Now compare that to someone like ireland, a country like ireland which is 12. 5 . You have a lot of these companies, particularly those that derive a lot of revenues overseas saying maybe i get a better deal by being somewhere else. But, everyone looks at this and says this is an arms race. You could lower the rate and then theres still going to be another country with a lower rate and maybe someone still defects. So its not just a question of tax policy. All right, Mellody Hobson good to see you. Thank you so much. And it is just about 7 19. First spouses, we dont choose this position we just happen to be in it. We are elected by one man. And you cant be fired. Cant. I certainly hope not. I guess we will see. Laura bush said she watched the first lady bush and knew what to expect. That didnt make it any less hurtful but on the other hand anybody in leadership knows you will be criticized. Thats absolutely true. And thats really the role of leadership, you know. Its not about amassing power, and its take the hits and continuing to do the work. Both ladies talked about the time on the world stage, even in a twoterm presidency. We cant waste the spotlight. Its temporary, and life is short and change is needed and women are smarter than men. Jeff glor shows us how a professor created a way to put dozens of fruits all on one tree. He set out to save something very old. Ancient varieties of stone fruit from as far away from england and syria and china, and what he developed was something entirely new. Its a Workshop Laboratory and easel all rolled into one and here he is at work on his masterpiece. The tree grows 40 kinds of fruit, and its getting attention worldwide. Its flattering and amazing and overwhelming. There will be varieties that blossom earlier. An art professor grew up in a farm in pennsylvania. A few years ago he learned new yorks agricultural experiment station, a 125yearold institution that preserves and produces fruit was going to rip up its entire stone fruit orchards so he set out to find a home for something that started thousands of year. It was collapsing an entire orchard down on one tree. That was the Practical Application for it. Its an entire orchard in one . Yes. So thats european plumbs. Its from england. Its about 17 its like the 18th century. I feel historic. Growing multiple stone fruits like peaches or plumbs on one tree is possible because what he does perhaps better than anybody, is graft. To start the tree you make a cut. Can you see that i cut it so these two pieces line up. In essence, tricking a tree into adopting a new limb or in this case dozens of them. The tree of 40 fruit has been growing for nine years and 14 are installed around the country, most in Public Places like this one at the center of the syracuse campus. Alive and edible. His project has grown beyond expectations, he says. Perfect. There is a pastor in virginia and he did a sermon. There is something about it that is biblical. Definitely. I liken it to the tree of life. Its the beginning of a story. Its and pretty fascinating food for thought. I saw somewhere on the website, where it said the tree of 40 fruit will end world hunger, and i thought, no it wont at all. But i like that it can lead to that type of thinking. New things are possible . Always. Fascinating. Wow. I have a very small sampling for you guys some of what will blossom here. Thats a plumb . Can i have that yeah, thats no the bigger one. I like these better. Plumbs, apricots and almonds these are good. Some are bitter. Mine is hard. Yeah thats right. He spent 10,000 to take plumbs out from california and if you can teach somebody to do that in your backyard here or somewhere else, you save money and help everybody, right . How long does it take for that grafting to happen . The tree of life is 9 years old. Grafting is typically a two or threeyear process, at least. That professor is on to something. He is an art professor . He is. William has plenty of experience in the sky. He finished a stint last year as a search and rescue pilot for the royal air force. William starts civilian Pilot Training next month. Hes expected to be on the job next spring. Responding to calls like traffic accidents, and heart attacks. Thats interesting. Yeah. The and is the name of an interactive documentary. 30 couples of all ages and genders are asked to be honest about sex, power money and more. The results are sometimes uncomfortable, enlightening and often emotional. Ooh. Oh, my gosh. Uhoh. Can i skip this one . You ready for this . How do you think what do you do. Go what do you hate . Why do i end up with the sex questions. You sure thats what the question says . You like secondguess me. Didnt understand. Im not doing anything wrong. Get over. I feel like you kind of copped out of the question. Thats a loaded one. Ill do that as many times as i have to. The and is a collaboration between the Creative Agency noise and a project thats called the skin deep. The films director and the creative director at noise. Good morning to you both. This was so much fun. I cringed, i laughed. And then many parts youre touched. But im going to start with you guys. What are you looking for in a sole mate . Or a friend with win fits . Where do you prefer to have sex, in the bed in the bathroom of a bar. What is more fun watching or binge drinking. Im not trying to be impolite or disrespectful. Those are questions youve asked us to engage with. What were you trying to do here . Basically wanted to get couples of all shapes and sizes to the in an intimate space asking each other questions. Not us asking them, but each other. And taking the audience and putting them into that intimate experience. Very voyeuristic and hopefully by seeing different relationships asking different questions you can then question what kind of relationship 78 i in . Because i was playing that game with my imaginary boyfriend. How i would answer. But it really does get you thinking. It works for single people. It works for couples. Yeah. And i think the cool thing about all the questions that we ask, although they feel uncomfortable when you hear them everybody has an answer. No matter how uncomfortable the question is, ultimately as soon as you hear it you know exactly what your answer is. We just rarely have the opportunity to actually put those things out there, particularly in an intimate relationship. Speaking of uncomfortable. One of the subjects that comes up is infidelity. Lets watch this clip. What would you do if i cheated on you . You cant say kill me. I would break up with you. I think i would have a very hard time forgiving you. Is it an emotional thing . Is it just a physical i know i know. Roll your eyes. I guess cheat in my mind if you cheat you dont tell me. In a way i feel like there is no cheat. Its there is a conversation. I guess i dont put that much stock in the physical cheating. Was it difficult to get people to be so honest . I thought it would be. Initially. But no because a, you know as a director you create the environment. But once youre talking to your partner that you spend all this time with and theres already something at stake, once they start looking at you, and they see when youre not answering the question they push further. I allow them to say sometimes it will go half hour. Sometimes an hour and a half. So we kind of disappeared. It became the couples own world. Whats the purpose of all this . Well the purpose i think is to get people to find something in the relationship and break through this is an online audience youre looking to so that people will think about their own relationships . Absolutely. Every couple is its own world. And when you see all these different worlds a couples therapist might have insights to intimacy of different couples. But otherwise you dont really see the intimate moments between couples. This way you do and then you ask, how am i in my relationship . I felt like i was eavesdropping on a conversation. Which one of my friends would you sleep with . When was the last time i disappointed you. Do you think i can improve my attractiveness . All of the questions that you asked really made you think . This is one that was surprising in which people talk about love at first sight. When you think about the first time we met, what do you remember . Oh, my gosh. Hes so adorable. You were in a suit that did not fit you really well. Total magic. I thought you were gay. It was awkward. Very awkward. It was epic. Yes. Yes. Where did you get the couples from . Im surprised at that. We have an awesome producer and she just reached out in the community. We kind of pretty much took anybody that would be willing to do it. Were they paid . No. Nobody was paid. A lot of samples to pick from. We took anybody and really as long as any relationship, there was something to talk about. Every relationship has a story. So, we just let them go. And everyone has that moment there is something between every couple. And i think an important part of it is we didnt define we didnt define them as couples so the rules of the relationship were irrelevant. Whether youre the viewer youre actually using the interactive experience we dont care how you define your relationship its just that youre connected with someone. And whats the most important thing you learned . Oh, lean in dont be afraid to ask the hard questions. And dont be afraid to answer them. There was a funny moment you had a 15yearold girl the guy said do you see yourself marrying me and she said well im only 15 i dont even know what im going to have for lunch tomorrow. All over the gamut. Why is it call the and. The thing that connects every single type of relationship regardless of gender or regardless of preference or anything like that is its whether you and him, or you and him, or her and her or him and him, its the and. Its the thing that connects us. What we realized is looking at all these different types of people everybody had some sort of commonality. You could look at people who you would read about in the paper and be like theres no way i would ever get along with this person. Then youre listening to them talk about their love relationship and youre like wow, that is exactly how i feel. Its true. How do people see it . They can go on line . Theand. Us. Thank you for being here. Thank you so much. And ahead, woodward and bernstein exposed watergate. But in a story youll see only on cbs this morning learn how two other men s tomorrow night marks 40 years since the turning point. Nixon said he would resign the next day. We would learn about those fateful last days. Ben tracy talked with the two men who captured those moments. Its a story youll see only on cbs this morning. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. Reporter we heard what president nixon said when he announced his resignation. I shall resign by noon tomorrow. Reporter but we did not know what he was thinking until now. I didnt want to admit guilt. I ithought it would set a bad precedent. Reporter it was nearly ten years after he resigned. This week the nixon president ial library is releasing segment os testify 36 hours gagnon spent talking with his former boss. 36 hours is a very long time to sit and talk with someone. What surprised you most about his responses . I was surprised at how relaxed he was and how open he was, how emotional he was. With mixon, thats a finely calibrated thing. Im sure weve done some things wrong in this administration. His wife pat nixon tried to convince him to stay in office even wheel she packed their belonging belongings. For three days she didnt sleep at all. Packing 5 1 2 years of clothes and other mementos. Reporter the nixons gathered their family including daughters julie and trisha for a final shoot before leaving the white house. Tears were in everybodys eyes am hef snapped that picture, julie couldnt hold in the tears any longer. She rushed over to me threw her arms around me and said i love you so much daddy. By that time i couldnt say much either. They believed in him, they loved him, they knew what he wanted, which was to stay and fight and make his case. Mr. Nixon as he leaves the white house here to board the helicopter. In a moment that has now become iconic, the president boarded his helicopter on the white houses south lawn. This was the highest possible drama. Reporter pulitzer prizewinning photographer was covering the departure for time magazine. Thats the shot. Reporter he said of all the photos he took that day, this image is the one most people remember but its this one that he thinks this one is how nixon really felt. The first frame, he got on the step and looked back at the white house. He knows its the last time. Its a very bitter moment. That picture nailed it. A few minutes later jerold gerald r. Ford becomes the president of the United States. What do you think is the most telling . His in the oval office foot up on the desk but in the background, all the empty shelves. All of the nixon things had been taken out but none of the ford things were put in there. The first lady in curlers at the breakfast table and seeing her husband off to work before they moved into the white house. Mrs. Ford might as well be saying honey, have a great day and pick up the dry cleaning on the way back. A bright moment in a very dark time. What lingers is the image of a forced smile and a former president who had lost everything. Maybe in that moment he felt like it was a Campaign Stop but it was the last stop in his presidency. I hope no other president ever resigned under any circumstances. For cbs this morning, ben tracy, los angeles. Just amazing. Given its 40 years were still learning more and more. Thats exactly what i was thinking. History is so exciting. Having him guide guide us through the pictures is also interesting. Empty shelves. I never noticed empty shelves before. I traveled with david. I was with him in afghanistan right after 9 11. That man has lots of history from his camera. Beautiful stuff. Great piece. Thank you so much. We saw the amazing images from knicks p. Up next the wild battle over who own this photos. Look at this guy. Its a selfie. A monkey selfie. Well show you more on cbs this morning.
