Donald sterlings lawyer told the nba he will not pay his fine and he will sue. Flooding, downed power lines reported all over miami. And in raleigh durham. Would you explain to me after knowing all this information why you should not resign. The charges are piling up for aaron hernandez, indicted for a double homicide in 2012. Rare videos showing president Franklin Delano roosevelt walking. And footage of a car crashing and hitting an 8yearold girl. Shes going to be okay. And all that matters. When it comes to an entertaining debate, nothing will top what happened as candidates for governor of idaho squared off as it says on my jacket, hey diddle, diddling right up the middle. Im only going to be here a little longer. I swear to god, im never doing jay leno again. Welcome to cbs this morning. Good morning, norah. Good morning, charlie. As you wake up in the west, fast moving wildfires are threatening thousands of homes in southern california. Over the last four days, officials have told 125,000 people to leave their neighborhoods near san diego. A badly burned body was found in carlsbad, california. Firefighters face extremely dangerous conditions but this morning winds are dying down and temperatures are cooling. Carter evans is reporting from san marcos this morning. Carter, good morning. Reporter good morning. Yesterday was supposed to be the day when firefighters would make significant progress against this fire here burning in san marcos. As can you see, that did not happen. This is one of several homes that were destroyed and with the fire still burning strong, the battle continued through the night. Flames lit up the night sky as firefighters tried to contain the most stubborn wildfire burning in San Diego County. The winds turned erratic and unpredictable, making Fire Fighting more dangerous and unpredictable. Once the winds picked up, the fire jumped our containment line and really took off. We had a number of fire whirl winds going on, pushing the winds very erratically. I suggest we move because we have a fire moving up behind us. This time lapsed video shows just how quickly the winddriven fire grew on thursday. Over a two and a half hour period, what started as a few puffs of smoke blackened the sky. Workers at the company that set up this camera were forced to evacuate. More than 16,000 new evacuation orders were issued in nearby escondido yesterday. 2,600 firefighters are working across the county, aided by water dropping helicopters. Reporter this helicopter just dropped water on top of us, trying to keep this fire from spreading to this home. More luxury hopes burned to the ground on thursday. The ever changing wind would force them to rethink their battle plan. Reporter in just the last few minutes, the fire has rushed up the hillside behind me. I can feel the heat as the flames race up and begin to ungulf this home. Every one of these embers in the fire thats going to force you to start running is the reason why the fires continue to take off and go from home to home. Reporter ill tell you, we had to move really quickly when those flames were closing in yesterday. By the way, two teens have been arrested for setting two small brush fires that were quickly put out last night. At this point its still unclear if they had anything to do with the other fires that are burning in San Diego County. Carter, thanks. This nasa satellite photo shows the scope of the wildfire zone, from San Diego County out to the pacific. But relief is coming. Megan glaros is tracking todays conditions. Good morning and good morning to our viewers in the west. San diego hit 97 degrees, the warmest may temperature since 1896. And today the 90s again. Were talking triple digit heat if you head farther inland from the coast. And there are still red flag warnings up today for fire danger. Those things will get better into the weekend. Were concerned about the fires burning north of san diego because an onshore flow could make the fires unpredictable. Fires could move closer to escondido coming into the second half of the day today. In the east, flooding is the main concern as we go into the weekend. This morning the faa is investigating a close call. It could have been the deadliest midair disaster in history. A passenger said his plane almost ran into another jet in mid flight over hawaii. Jeff pueges has the story. Reporter this near miss may have been a lot closer than reported and the documents also reveal an air Traffic Controller did not notice that the planes were on a collision course. At 11 16 in the evening, the United Airlines flight 1205 pilot can be heard initiating an abrupt emergency dive. The plane fbs cruising at 3,000 feet. It made the drop to avoid a headon collision with a flight traveling the same altitude. According to reports, the plane came within 2. 2 miles of each other. It was a scary and violent experience. Reporter Kevin Townsend was on the plane. It felt like the play had died and started dropping. When close calls occur, the ticas system alerts pilots. In this case the system gave the instructions to both pilots. One would descend his aircraft, the other would climb and that got away from a situation where potentially you could create a midair collision. Reporter ticus alerted the pilot of flight 1205. In the initial report conducted by honolulu air traffic control, the tower navigating the two planes involved, indications of human error were found, a controller did not notice the condition. We were cleared at the river back there. What happened . Reporter rosenker points out that human error might be responsible but the systems are working. Weve seen a reduction of midair collisions since weve adopted this technology. Reporter the faa have a team on the ground and are working with authorities trying to figure out what happened. Norah . Jeff, thank you. Secretary Eric Shinseki said hes mad as hell about the purported coverup. Wyatt andrews is on capitol hill where congress is losing patience. Reporter good morning. The allegation is that veterans are waiting far too long to get their health care but the system can be rigged by professionals to hide that fact. Shinseki came to ask for more time for the investigation but the senators pressed him to take action now. The secretary came under pressure from republicans and democrats but almost. Asked when shinseki would crack down. Shinseki asked for three weeks to hear from investigators looking into allegations of secret wait lists nationwide and said he wants the answers more than anyone. Any allegation, any adverse incident like this makes me as makes me mad as hell. Reporter in phoenix where the investigation of hidden wait times is focused, Cindy Bordeaux lost her husband, jerry, to liver cancer last year. She said he waited six weeks for treatment when he should have been seen immediately. My husbands last call to the v. A. Doctor, and i quote him, i just want to know am i going to die today or am i going to die tomorrow . Reporter shinseki argues that he needs more time to learn if falsified wait times are a local or national problem. Is it across the system or are these isolated locations . But several senators confronted him with a list of several previous investigations and one internal memo exposing what were called gaming strategies in the appointment system, inaccurate reporting of clinic wait times and how patients were suffering unnecessary delays. Would you explain to me after knowing all this information why you should not resign . I came here to make things better for veterans. This is not a job. Im here to accomplish a mission that i think they critically deserve and need. Reporter at this hearing two major revelations came from the office of inspector general. The first is that criminal charges may be considered in phoenix, but the other is that none of the deaths being investigated in phoenix so far was the result of the long wait times. Charlie . Wyatt, thanks. The Los Angeles Clippers are out of the nba playoffs this morning but for owner Donald Sterling the fight is just starting. He was banned for life from the nba for racist comments. Sports illustrated reports sterling is prepared to sue in order to block the sale of a team in a 2. 5 million fine. Legal analyst jack ford is joining us. Good morning. Can the nba for him to pay the fine . They say they can force him to pay the fine and they say they can force him to sell the team. Are they right . Thats the interesting thing. Everybody agrees theres no specific clause in the nbas constitution or bylaws that says if you engage in reprehensible comments in private that get out in the public, thats a basis for us to fine you and to ban you and to take your team away. So the nba is saying its not specifically there, but within the parameters of those documents, there is a clause that says youre prohibited from violating contractual obligations, from engaging in unethical conduct and taking positions that are deemed adverse to the nba. The nba says thats sort of an umbrella clause that allows them to go after him saying those comments fit within those parameters. So sterling says hes probably going to sue the nba. On what grounds . Hes saying if you dont say is specifically in that document, then we didnt agree as owners saying you can take my business because of that. He says it has to be more than just a general provision here and their claim is basically, you know, you can be a terrible person and say awful things. If it doesnt say in the document that i signed that thats a basis for getting rid of me, you cant get rid of me. Its going to be a long and hardfought piece of litigation. Thank you. This morning the controversy over the firing of New York Times editor Jill Abramson goes all the way to congress. Jan crawford is in washington. Jan, good morning. Reporter good morning. And good morning to our viewers in the west. Abramsons allies are saying the times paid her significantly less than her male counterpart. That is an explosive allegation, especially for a newspaper that supported equal pay, and the times is denying it. A day after ousting its first female executive editor, the New York Times found itself under siege from all sides. The times could be in legal trouble, as well as having a p. R. Nightmare on its hands. If thats not the cigar room in the country club, i dont know what is. Reporter it was reported jim abramson was fired after she complained of being paid less than her former counterpart. He told the staff it is simply not true that jills compensation was significantly less than her predecessors. In fact, in 2013, her total compensation package was more than 10 higher than that of bill keller. Regarding her dismissal, he went on to say the only reason for that decision was concerns i had about some aspects of jills management of our newsroom. Theyre saying, if it proves to be true, that they actually pay fairly and thats the whole argument. Reporter still, the controversy reverberated all the way to capitol hill where Senate Majority lead are harry reid used it to argue for equal pay legislation. The woman that ran that newspaper was fired yesterday. Why . Its now in the press because she complained she was doing the same work as men and two different jobs and made a lot less money than they did. Reporter so far abramson hasnt spoke publicly but her daughter apaired to make fun, putting this picture with her mom sporting boxing gloves with the quote pushy. Jan, thanks. The internet has always treated every customer the same, but this morning the Net Neutrality principle faces an historic change. The fcc is endorsing new rules that could clear the way for a twotier system. It would allow web sites to buy faster service. Nancy cordes is in washington wb politicians for both parties are blasting the proposal. Reporter think of it like this, in the internet is a highway, all information is going at the same speed. But if it changes, some may be able to go faster if it pays a toll. They voted 32 to release the rules. The rules would open the door for the first time for internet providers like comcast and verizon to charge Tech Companies to send content to consumers more quickly. Netflix might pay a premium to ensure its customers can stream movies more reliably at a cost a startup competitor might not be able to afford. I dont like the idea that the internet could be divided in haves and havenotes. I will work to see that does not happen. Verizon successfully sued over longtime regulation requiring internet providers to treat all customers the same. We cannot have a twotiered internet with fast lanes that speed the traffic of the privileged and leave the rest of us lagging behind. Tech Companies Like amazon, google and facebook, which already dominate the internet without paying extra oppose the new rules and called them a grave threat in a letter to the s. E. C. Last week. I think it could be the end of the free and open internet as we know it. Reporter craig aaron is the president of free press, a group that advocates for Net Neutrality. For most americans they have at best two choices for highspeed internet and many only have one company that offers that in their town. As a consumer, if your Internet Service provider decides to start blocking or slowing down the service, youre at their mercy. Reporter after a period of public comment, the fcc chairman says he wants to make these new rules final by the end of the year, norah. Nancy, thank you. Coming up in this half hour, 60 minutes goes inside iran. That country has been a mystery to americans for decades. Steve kroft is here with a preview of his report on sunday. And an iowa debate goes way off the rails. People are watching it this morning. Two longshot candidates share extreme views on several topics, including nuclear disasters. Thats ahead. The New York Daily News says ringling brothers barnum and brothers circus won a suit saying they treated elephants inhui inhumanely. The fda is lowering the dose of those who take lunesta. They say people who take too much at night are not alert enough to drive in the morning. The age of texting to report to emergency is here in the morning. At t, sprint, tmobile and verizon will begin routing 911 texts to local police. That does not mean every local Emergency Center isab able to accept the 911 tecxts at this time. And the economy and governor corruption were key issues. Its the first time one party has won a parliamentary majority in india in 30 years. Negotiators are back at the table this morning in vienna, talking about the next steps in stopping iran from developing a nuclear bomb. This sunday 60 minutes gives as you rare look inside iran at the crossroads. There is a new president and the Nuclear Talks are picking up steam after years of sanctions. Steve kroft gives as you preview of his travels inside iran. Reporter while the sanctions and their effects have imposed considerable pain and hardship on many iranians, we saw no evidence the economy was on the verge of collapse. The bazaars were filled with goods and people were shopping. It hasnt really brought it on to the knee. Fayed and his son are part of the business class, opening up iran to the world. They say the sanctions have done enough harm to get iran to the bargaining table but not enough to force iranians into a final deal they dont want to make. Do you think that iran is willing to make concessions on its Nuclear Program . It depends on the concessions, doesnt it . To stop it totally, i doubt it. But to reach some middle grounds, most probably. They gave up a comfortable lifestyle in the states more than a decade ago to return here and become pioneers in the internet. Their company is now one of the countrys Largest Service providers, but not as large as they would like it to be. How do you return and build an Internet Company when there are sanctions in place . Everything is possible but its a bit more expensive and a bit longer to bring everything. You can get practically anything you want. Im expecting the new google glass product thats coming out, hopefully within the next month or two youll be able to find it in iran. Steve kroft is here. Good morning. Charlie. It sounds like a fascinating trip. Sum up for us what you found in terms of the mood, attitude, feeling of the iranian people. Well, i think the tone has changed. When you look back just a little over a year ago and you have ahmadinejad and you have rouhani and the people around him and theyre much different, theyre sort of pragmatists and you get the sense of lets stop the bad talk and see if we can get a few things accomplished here. And on a nuclear deal . I think theyre hopeful and theyre optimistic something will happen. One of the things that i found really interesting was that they think that theyre convinced theyre not building a bomb. They dont believe we didnt talk to anybody who believes theyre building a bomb, that the Supreme Leader has dictated that its against their religion and a fattah was issued, why dont people believe us . They feel theyve already made the concessions. I think what they want i think the sanctions have hurt but theyre prepared to sacrifice a lot more if they have to to keep the Nuclear Program, what they called the peaceful Nuclear Program because they dont want it dictated to them. Thats key because the point the Obama Administration has made repeatedly is these are crippling sanctions and the streets will rise up because its hurt them so much economically. But you didnt really see too much of that, did you . No, no, no. The economy looks i compare it to what people in this country were going through back in 2008 and 2009 at sort of the depths of the financial crisis. And theres uncomfort. People are unhappy, the inflation rate is about 30 . But theyre not starving, theres gasoline, theres cars driving all over the place and the shops and bazaars are filled with people. For most americans what we know about iran is what we see on tv. Even the word regime is scary to people. Were you ever afraid . Did you ever feel in danger . No, its not like that. Its like going to a Big International capital. We saw no we saw two military people. No real policemen, no guns. It was very sort of quiet and very little poverty. With one of the things you had talked about, the effect, they have a very big safety net in that country, and the government has been giving people subsidies to sort of help them through these difficult times. Now its costing them. Attitude toward america . Attitudes towards westerners, i think theyre very friendly towards them. I think they like them. If youre talking about the Foreign Policy of the united states, theyll tell you then we have big problems with it. But we have nothing against americans. We want to see westerners. I think theyre sick and tired of the isolation and they really do not want a war. Im looking forward to it. I wonder if they knew you were 60 minutes or did they know you were steve kroft . The big case for them was youre an american . What are you doing here . We found one thats what they look like. You can see steves full report, including a revealing conversation with president rouhanis top aid on 60 minutes on sunday night. Looking forward to that. And this event wednesday is an internet sensation for its unique mix of candidates. What do i say about the taxes . We balance our budget on what we had and so i say theyre about the same, you know . If theyre a little bit more, its oppressive on the taxpayer, if its less, we dont balance our budget and that is bad. Do you hear me, feds . Its bad not to balance your budget i dont like political correctness. Can i say this . It sucks. And im about as politically correct as your proverbial turd in a punch bowl. And another thing you want to know is our Energy Plants thats run by atomic, they can stand 1 15 of an earthquake like that one in japan, and my bible says theyre going to get worse and worse and worse we better get us some, folks. All right, all right, its time to get out. I would like to thank the candidates, cowboys and cu curmudgeons and all. I want to know whos going to win, the turd in the punch bowl guy or the curmudgeon slapping the podium. We will keep you posted. I think the sitting governor may win. Or him, too. The legendary journalist known for her mustsee interviews blazed a trail for women in the industry. As she steps away from the microphone, walters leaves an indelible mark on tv. She has interviewed World Leaders and tyrants and every president and first lady since richard nixon. When it comes to the big get, Barbara Walters is incomparable. I have interviewed so many of the heads of state but the interviews that stay with me are the Human Interest interviews, christopher reeve, a couple who were blind and deaf. These are the interviews where i think maybe i made a difference. I want to play a videotape for you. Her interview with Monica Lewinsky with some 50 Million Viewers remains the mostwatched news broadcast in history. What will you tell your children when you have them . Mommy made a big mistake. Of all the accolades and accomplishments, walters is very clear on what she is most proud of. Barbara, theres not a woman on tv today that cant look back and say if it wasnt you, then there wouldnt be me. And thats the most important thing to you. Yes, it is the most important this eveni thing to me. Thats what will continue. Reporter walters began her Television Career in 1955 when women were a novelty in this profession. As she told charlie in 2008, her onscreen partner, harry reisner, didnt like her. What happened . I failed. You failed or the show failed . The show failed. It could have been a knockout punch but instead she picked herself up and took the helm at 20 20. She had a knack for getting the famous to open up. As they say, imitation wis the sincerest form of flattery. In 2004, after 20 years, she stepped down from 20 20 to focus on her other show, the view. This morning will be her last at the table. People will be looking to see will barbara cry . I hope not. I hope that i will have a nice celebration. That would be good. It is a celebration but it was very touching yesterday. I think everybody felt for barbara, how she will be missed. And i said to her are you going to wake up monday morning and say, oh, no, what have i done . She said i hope not, i hope not. Shes 84. Its hard to believe shes truly going to retire. I think if she still lands another big interview, which she likely probably will, well see her again. According to the travel website, expedia, nearly 70 of americans think drivers who text, email or talk on the phone are extremely aggravating. Despite that, more than half admit using a smartphone at least some of the phone behind the wheel. And many automakers are working to have selfdriving cars ready for sale by the end of the decade. This week tim stevens from our partner cnet was in sweden for a ride in a volvo. This is the first time that volvo has invited a journalist to drive a selfdriving vehicle. How did it go . It went well. We didnt crash into anything, thats the most important thing. Theyre basically doing this in their home town of goteborg, sweden. Designating some roads in sweden, youll be able to go on with one of their cars, hit a button on the Steering Wheel and effectively you can drive the car around the highway. You can imagine being stuck in traffic, pressing a button and the car will drive itself. By 2017 they want to have these cars for sale in sweden. How does it work . Theres a sensor package built in behind the mirror with a laser scanner and a couple of cameras and a radar sensor built into the front of the car. So the car can basically build a picture of whats coming in front of it. It can see the lines in the road, the speed limit signs and it can drive itself forward and be smart. The interesting thing, its all based on technology thats already in volvos cars today. There are quite a few other autonomous programs out there, theyre using extra sensors. Volvos cars have the sensors built in. Does it know how to slam on the brakes . Yes. The one thing the car doesnt know how to do yet is change lanes. But yes, it can slam on the brakes and slow down. And it will have a wireless communication to the city, so the city can say, theres Road Construction in the right lane at this area of the highway. So the car can change lanes and go around. This seems to be something that everybody is working on. The whole every manufacture is playing with this. Google has their car, which they can a demo. Mercedes benz, audi, nissan, ford. All the other cars you see, the vast majority of them have very expensive sensors built into the roof. Volvo is different because its got lowcost tech that is already available. And says that it will be out by 2017. No one else has made a hard line in the sand like that. What cant it do . It cant drive itself from point to point. Google system, for example, you can sit in the car, type in where you want to go and the car will take you there. Volvo system will take you on the highway. I dont want to sound like the man in the room that doesnt like change. But it seems like with technology, so many things can go wrong and youre not behind a big machine on the road. Is this something that we should be concerned about, safety, do you think theyll have it down, tim . Its important and theyre testing millions and millions of miles in these cars to make sure. At this point they need to tell it sten yoes to look for. The cars arent learning for themselves, theyre being taught how to drive. But more than 90 of all accidents are due to human error of some form or another. So basically the theory is, they can make these cars safer. Volvo by 2020 wants all of its cars to be noncrashable. What will it cost . The volvo system right now, the sensors cost about 2,000 to add on to your car. By 2017 it could cheaper. And because volvo has taken liability in the crashes, if indeed while its driving itself. It will be volvos fault, your insurance will be a lot cheaper. Tim, thanks. Its now 8 07. He is an army veteran, tax payer and voter, he worked for the government and raised a family. But as we report, he finds himself caught in immigration limbo. Mario hernandez wanted to take his wife, bonita, on a cruise, but needed a passport. What he found out next changed everything. After nearly half a century, in this country, to hear someone tell you youre not a u. S. Citizen. I feel like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. I really do. I it is difficult even to speak about it, im telling you. It is you know. We should be enjoying this time of our lives. Not living in fear that something bad may happen to him. The problem dates back to 1965. When Hernandez Family fled communist cuba. He was granted the legal status given to all cuban immigrants. Which included a Social Security card, but not immediate citizenship. In 1975, he believed he had become a citizen when he was sworn into the army during the vietnam war. I took the oath there, to uphold the laws of the constitution, bear arms. For two decades, hernandez worked as a federal prison guard, a job that requires u. S. Citizenship and recurring background checks. Among the criminals he supervised were Oklahoma City bombers, Timothy Mcveigh and terry nichols. It was a very high level. And all the while, youre not a u. S. Citizen. I was always under the impression that i was. Hernandez attorney, Elizabeth Ricci appealed to immigration officials earlier this year, citing his clean record, history of paying taxes and military service. The law says if you served during a designated period of hostility, which vietnam was, you can jump from not having a status, to citizenship without first being a resident. But in march, they were told he was not eligible. And denied. What is the problem . Haas going on . Inefficiency to the extreme. In statement u. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service said we are currently reviewing mr. Hernandez case, and will meet with him and his attorney to further discuss his application. Im living in a bad dream and its like, im hoping i wake up. But its not a dream. Its definitely real. Hernandez hopes he will be allowed to fulfill the american dream, he thought he was living. For cbs this morning manuel bojorquez, tallahassee, florida. Hernandez could face prison and fine force falsely claiming citizenship and voting. There ought to be somebody in charge of red tape. Who has the right to mags a decision to say stop this. Its common sense, i love what the lawyer said, inefficiency to the extreme. I have a feeling thats going to change quickly. The other relatives became suspicious in a case that puzzled investigators. 48 hours correspondent Erin Moriarity has been covering this crime for six years. Heres a preview of tomorrow nights report. That morning was probably i felt like that morning was the end of my life. The two most important people in this world were taken away from me. Reporter the nightmare began on a quiet residential street in albuquerque, new mexico. My mom was getting ready for work. I heard my mom scream. My dad yelled, what are you doing, and just gunshots just went off, boom, boom, boom, boom. Honestly i didnt know what to do. I didnt know what to do. I looked to see where am i going to hide. So i went into my closet, turn my cell phone and call 911. I said, my parents have been shot. Im scared. Reporter her parents were dead. Only rene was not harmed. Sit true your parents were the greatest people . The defense lawyer asked her to read from her diary. My mom reminds me of the astrological diary, gemini, twofaced. I hate my dad. She may not have pulled the trigger but i have no doubt she had every dog with this. Reporter amazingly renes entire family believes she was somehow involved in her parents murder. For months rene was the prime suspect. Eventually she took a lie detector test. Do you know for sure who shot your parents . No. Do you know who shot your parents in their bedroom . No. The bottom line is rene could. Pass a polygraph. But rene is not the one on trial. Enough about rene. Were going to put the focus back where it belongs, back on the defendant. After almost a year, investigators have found what they thought was hard evidence tying a surprising suspect to the coldblooded murders. His name, ron santiago. He was the Mortgage Broker for the refinancing of my parents house. I was like, what . What are you talking about . You may call your next witness. Erin moriarty joins us at the table. The Mortgage Broker . What would be the motive . This would be a first for me. This is why we worked on the case for so long. The prosecution had some trouble coming one the motive too. But eventually what they said in court was this was 2005 at the height of the housing bubble. He worked for countrywide, the company that went under. They sthad he was overworked, that he promised these climates more than he could deliver, he panicked, and he killed them. It was a very unusual motive. Was rene a suspect at some point . Absolutely. From the beginning she was. And you really even through the trial, even though she was not actually on trial, the defense did what Defense Attorneys love to do. They put the star witness, the prosecution witness on trial because there was she gained money, she inherited almost a million dollars, she didnt act properly, there was a delay before called 911. Very strange. So you interviewed the defendant twice and then part of the interview was used in the trial. Did they regret allowing you to do that . Whats interesting, i always worry about that when we do these, but, no, the defense actually liked the idea that the jurors could see him. But then the prosecution couldnt crossexamine him. So it worked. Can i just say im confused . You wont be when you see it. Im sorry. The Mortgage Broker, the daughter, were they a couple . No. In fact, the family thought they were, and theres no evidence of that. Saturday night all will be revealed. Thank you, Erin Moriarity. He and other Pulitzer Prize winners will write essays to be printed on the cups and bags. Chipotles ceo has sign off on the deal. It sounds like what oprah is saying. Graduation season is in full swing. That means an abundance of advice for students. High School TeacherDavid Mccullough junior made a big splash in 2012. He used his commencement speech to tell graduates you are not special. Hes expanding on that advice in a new book called you are not special and other encouragements. Lee muck culla sat down to find out more. Youre not special sounds more like an insult than words of encouragement. But mccullough was using his speech as an opportunity to inspire his students to look beyond their selfies in order to achieve a truly special life. Youve been pampered,s could eted, doted upon, helmet, bubblewrapped. Youve been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie, yes, you have. Its the 2012 High School Commencement speech that became a humbling youtube hit. But do not get the idea youre anything special, because youre not. and put the candid High School English teacher David Mccullough junior in the internet spotlight. Where did the genesis of youre not special come from. I pictured the people to whom i would be speaking. I envisioned them in the cap and gown which said to me that ceremonial costume eliminates any individuality. They are on a literal level playing field. They would cross the stage alpha bheticall ical betically, not in class rank. Which said to me anything you might have achieved in the building no longer matters. Its a beginning, they were starting afresh. What do you think it was that made the speech go viral. Other than my smoldering good looks . His dry sense of humor is one of the reasons that makes this teacher one of the favorites at Wellesley High School in massachusetts his cybercelebrity status doesnt hurt, either. What did you think of his graduation speech . Allky hear is youre not special, youre not special. And at first i was like gee, mr. Mccullough, thats harsh. But i kind of got the message at the end. When your graduation speech originally went viral, many people missed the intent of it. How did it feel when you realized people were critical of what you were saying . Not good. It was intended to be sort of warmhearted teasing, a bit. With like some teasing so often does, with big elements of truth. You see, if everyone is special, then no one is. If everyone gets a trophy, trophies become meaningless. Mr. Mcculloughs speech may have been to the graduating class, but he intended the parents to be his other target audience. Its a statistical fact, a statistical inevitability, that most of us are average. The problem is, parents have a very difficult time accepting that. My kid is of course above average. Well, maybe not. What are we parents doing wrong . I think were intruding on what should be their responsibilities. Were denying them selfdetermination. Were concerned that any wobble or stumble might preclude some later opportunity. Kids need freedom. They need to explore on their own. They need to accept the possibility that failure can be real. And that you have to figure out a way to deal with it. Are holden and ackley friends . Mccullough has been teaching students life lessons through his love of literature for 26 years. He really loves teaching. I think thats obvious. But its the way he does it. He definitely wants me to learn something, not teaching me so i can get the grade or teaching for the money. He has a goal for me and all the other students in the class to come away with something in this class. What did you come away with . To seize the day, he says at the end of every class, carpe the heck out of every diem. The greatest truth of the Human Experience is ha selflessness is the best thing you can do for yourself. The sweetest joys of life then come only with the recognition that youre not special. Because everyone is. Is mr. Mccullough one of those teachers, who shapes kids lives . Absolutely. Some of the most successful people in life point to a teacher. That really changed the course of where they were headed. And it seems that you are that teacher for many of your students. How does that feel . Great. It feels great. Its the best job in the world. I cant think of anything more gratifying or fun. I get up every morning, i cant wait to get here. The essence of the book is the enlargement enlargement of the speech. Tiff right here and a lot of wisdom. He really expanded, that speech made such a giant ripple for everyone. I remember someone sending it to me. And hes that guy, hes really that great. He loves those kids. He wants us all to go right for them. And i think people really get the message of what he was saying, though. Those who missed it the first time now clearly see what he was doing. Lee, you have kids, can you imagine saying to your kids, youre not that special, youre ordinary. I say that to them every day, nora. Its a tough world out there, baby, buck up. Thats different than saying buck up. If they really listen, youre not special until you do something and become selfless, i love that message. I do, too. Go beyond yourself. Go, David Mccullough. Thank you, lee. Josh hartnett is in our toyota green room. Why he hit the pause button at the height of, actor Josh Hartnett made his mark with roles in pearl harbor and blackhawk down. But he struggled after being thrust in the spotlight. Hartnett moved back home to minnesota tore a year and a half, trying to live a normal life. And now is returning to a starring role in a psychological thriller, the new showtime series Penny Dreadful. This is the individual . Yes. Did you bring your weapons . One minute. What are we doing here . Were looking for someone, more than that you dont need to know. Do not be amazed at anything you see. And dont hesitate. Josh hartnett joins us at the table and can i just say, you look as good in person as you do on the big screen. And tv, i will stop drooling now. Lets talk about you, josh. Lets talk about the show. So they say about Penny Dreadful weird, enthralling, scarey, intriguing, entertaining. It is unpredictable and it will scare the bee gee sus ojesus ou. Do you like scary things . I do, i like to go to movies that are scary and be scared, like anybody. This is what the writer, john logan, said, that he doesnt want it to be predictable. He doesnt want the audience to guess haas coming behind the corner. Was that attractive, working with him . It was very attractive being able to work with john. We have a similar philosophy about everything. I like unpredictability. You have been on television before. A show 17 years ago, we know you from blackhawk down. What made you go back to television . It was to be able to work with collaborators like john logan, sam mendez is working on this and a spanish director and when you have a cast like this and are able to work with people like this in any format, you take it. Why did you go back to minnesota . I went back to minnesota in 2001 after doing blackhawk down because i sort of, i felt like i needed to be around people that really knew me. Because it was thrust into the spotlight at that time. Pearl harbor had just come out. Blackhawk down was going to come out. Was is something you found enormously unattractive about all that fame rushing in . Well it was something unattractive about it in that i felt i was still developing as a person and i didnt want to be developing in the spotlight. I didnt feel like i would develop in a kind of natural way. If i was, if i how did you decide when to come back . Was it this often . Or was it simply you felt like you had grounded yourself more and you knew who you were more . Ive done a lot of independent films ive done a few studio films as well. But be focused on friends, family, lifestyle, who i wanted to become before i was going to focus on my career because i had spent four years out of high school essentially working on films, and i knew that that was going to be if i continued that way, i would be sucked up into a world where i didnt really know anybody. Its extraordinary that you did. Very few people do this at the height of their fame. Most people drink it up and i think get off track. What did you learn going home . Well, a lot of things. Im 35 years old and i dont feel remotely the same person as that kid was. I see those pictures, and for me that was 13 years ago or whatever. But for the public, thats a lifetime ago. I kind of i can sense that i dont know. I can sense that theres a clear definition between the then me and me now. But i dont know. A million different things. Were you worried about losing your mojo, so to speak . You were offered superman and said no. Were you worried you might be out of the mix and not come back . In those situations where youre the new hot thing, youre sort of offered everything. Thats true. I guess i saw a lifetime of happiness is more important to me and i wanted to work on myself before i kind of before i worked on my career full stop. I want i needed to have a core before i could exhibit something about humanity, you know. And theres a new scene in Penny Dreadful just to talk about humanity. Exactly. Its all natural. Youre looking good. Thank you. Congratulations, josh. Good to see you back on tv. Congratulations, josh. Good to see you back on tv. Thank you. The car with an estimated 45 miles per gallon highway.
