>> he does not. >> you feel that has been taken care of? you know i think back what ronald reagan used to say, trust but verify but in this situation, it seems to me the government may be asking us to trust us but they can't verify why we ought to trust it. >> the president is not saying "trust me." the president is saying i want every member of congress on whose authority we are running this program to understand it, to be breechiefed about it and to be comfortable with it. >> our senior correspondent john miller served in the office of director of national intelligence. good morning. what's the latest? >> well, it's been an interesting weekend, because over the weekend mr. snowden has unearthed more retchvelations. but the key thing is he's not talking just about alleged u.s. spying on americans. which was the discussion all last week. he's talking about british spying on allies. he's talking about u.s. spying on russian. russian leaders. it seems to be a departure from i'm doing this because americans don't know their privacy's being violated to i'm just giving out all the spying secrets. >> but no big surprise that the u.s. is spying on foreign governments. >> i was shocked and appalled. >> i think one of the interesting -- >> kind of missing the point which is you start off as a whistleblower saying americans need to be listened in on and then you're handing out stuff saying the brits listened in on these people. we listened in on the russian leader. that's what they do in the spy agency. i'm trying to figure out what he's doing here. >> i think what's fascinating is the response by the administration. so you see now the senate intelligence committee releasing this letter from the administration where they say they've thwarted a number of attacks. that they only spied on fewer than 300 phone records. they're trying to show look this program worked and the spying is not as vast as some would suggest. why the pushback now? >> i think there was no need to have that pushback now because before snowden started revealing these things weren't out there, i'll tell you, the congressional oversight committees that approved them to justice department lawyers who said they were legal. they were out to the three branches of government that would review a secret program. i think what they're doing now, now that the cow is out of the barn, we're going to have to explain a little more about process. because some of the stuff has run away with itself. >> what i don't understand is why they haven't initiated the extradition process. >> you know you've got lawyers doing what lawyers do. which is they are trying to cross ts and dot is and they are torturing every sentence with what's just the perfect charge that's going to work in the trial a year and a half -- >> in the meantime, he's talking. >> you've got intelligence officers just on the other side saying, why don't we just give him a couple of more weeks. so there's a little tension developing in washington. saying let's move this process forward. >> the president's chief of staff told bob schieffer, i don't know where he is right now. do we think that snowden is all talking to the chinese right now? >> that's certainly a dark possibility. you've got hong kong attached to mainland china. it's a semiautonomous government but i'd put a capital "s" on the "semi." you have a major adversary there. and a guy with a bag full of secrets who seepms to be less discriminate about what he'll give out. we had three nsa whistleblowers sit down with "usa today" and say, you know, we applaud this guy for not going through the government process because we tried that and it didn't work. then they started to say about these other secrets he's giving up, that's not whistle blowing, that's just giving up it's bordering on being a traitor is what the words one of them used. >> john miller thank you. firefighters in colorado are making progress battling the most destructive wildfire in that state's history. it has destroyed nearly 500 homes. it is now 65% contained. manuel bojorquez is there. >> reporter: investigators are now trying to determine what started the massive blaze which killed two people. so far, they've ruled that out weather as the cause. leaving the question, was the fire accidentally or deliberately set? >> this is a crime scene until proven otherwise. >> reporter: investigators are considering arson as a possible cause of the black forest fire, which raged for six days burning through 22 square miles north of colorado springs. but even though the giant plume of smoke no longer hangs over the area el paso county sheriff terry mcqiito warns the fire is not out. >> we have power lines down we have trees falling. >> reporter: the danger also lurks underground. the firefight is beneath our feet? >> a lot of the mop-up operations, the intent is to get a lot of the heat underneath the ground. >> reporter: before residents are allowed in crews must look for hot spots like the ones found just right here. if any of this were to reignite you can see how close it would come to homes which were spared. >> you see all the root systems. basically what happens, it gets so superheated in this area that they hold the fire. they burn like little fusions underground. >> reporter: this weekend, daryl fortner returned to his home and found nothing but a chimney still standing. he shot this video. >> i couldn't believe it. i didn't want to believe it. >> reporter: fortner was out of town. when he returned evacuation orders were being enforced. >> i was really mad at the authorities for not letting me into my house but i want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for not letting me in because if i had got to my house, i would have stayed there. >> reporter: there is still no timetable on when those in the hardest hit areas will be allowed to return. the sheriff also told residents he is working to protect their properties from vandals. four burglars have been reported. charlie and norah. >> manuel thank you. in turkey labor strikes are under way. unions called for workers to join anti-government protests. those demonstration, are in their third work. holly williams is in istanbul. holly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here in the heart of istanbul turkish police are trying to stop protesters from congregating in taksim square. that hasn't stopped defiant crowds from trying. thousands of people tried to march towards the square where these demonstrations began before spreading around the country. in istanbul's narrow alleyways, the protesters played a game of cat and mouse with the police. the police fired tear gas. and they used powerful water cannons to drive the protesters back. the crowds are angry with turkey's prime minister. he was democratically elected. after ten years in power, his opponents say he's become authoritarian, trying to impose his conservative islamic politics on everyone. erdogan still has many supporters. yesterday, tens of thousands of them rallied in istanbul. "we're behind erdogan and we always will be," said this man, "until death we'll support him." there have long been tensions here in turkey between conservative muslims and those peep who want to keep all religion out of politics. those tensions have now exploded on to the streets. with neither side willing to back down it's likely we will see more clashes. charlie, norah. iran's newly elected president says his nation is not ready to stop enriching uranium for its nuclear program. but rohani says iran will start showing what he calls transparency. rohani says wounds with the united states run deep and are difficult to heal. he won the election in a surprise landslide. syria is condemning egypt for cutting off all diplomatic ties this weekend. egyptian president mohamed morsi is also supporting no-fly zones over syria. statements from the assad government calls the move irresponsible and part of a conspiracy against syria. new jersey republican chris christie turned down an invitation to address a conservative christian group over the weekend. instead, he attended a conference hosted by former president clinton. >> i want to invite to the stage a man whose reputation i have virtually ruined more than once. they'll show pictures of him talking to me. maybe he can get elected in new jersey but everybody else will say, oh my god, he's consorted with a leper. >> our political director is with us from washington. john, good morning. is there some truth to what the former president said? what do conservatives think about chris christie snubbing them to hang out with bill clinton? >> there is some truth to it. christie is focused mostly on getting re-elected this year in a democratic state so it's good for him to be seen with president clinton. so for his immediate goals, this is great. you can imagine the invitation read -- remember, he was there to talk about how effective he's been. the invitation could have read come and tell us how wonderful you are, which is hard to turn down. conservatives don't like it because they think he's thumbing his nose at them. that election's a long way off if he decides to run for president. >> what cage outme out of the conservative conference? >> all republicans are trying to figure out as parties out of power are what to do about the future. do they need to get more conservative or do they need to broaden the party. and chris christie is running as this effective governor or thinking about running i should say. conservatives at washington are talking about fundamental core values. to attract people to you. don't change those principles. and that's the clash we will see over the next few years. both in the 2014 elections and in 2016. >> let's talk about jeb bush who is someone who's at the top of the list for the republicans. he spoke at this conservative event and said, quote ingrant immigrants are more furtherle and they love families. they has been in favor of some sort of immigration reform. what have we learned about what he thinks about 2016? >> we're using the word fertile there, got him -- they got a little bit of grief. palin tweaked him a little bit. on the facts he was right. foreign-born women the birth rate is higher. the word fertile got him into a little bit of difficulty. what i know is that he's not -- he's thinking about it, but this kind of moment where he gets tweaked for improper word choice is the kind of irritating part of running that he hates. so he's thinking about it but there are a lot of hurdles for him. a lot of them internal. >> john dickerson, thank you. and prince philip left the hospital this morning. he was admitted 11 days ago. prince philip celebrated his 92th birthday last week. he missed the official celebration of the queen's birthday. it is time to show you some of this morning's headlines from around the globe. north korea wants to resume nuclear talks with the u.s. but the north also wants america to give up its own nuclear program. plus an unlikely pairing of the vatican. pope francis and blessing of more than a thousand bikers. they meet the new lead ore the catholic church. that's ahead joomd the pentagon survey finds 26,000 sexual assaults took place in the military last year. it's only recently come to light. the current investi the "washington post" because she claimed the naval academy isn't taking the case seriously. jeff glor spoke with tin involved. good morning. >> good morning. she's only 20 years old and still in school. the incident happened last spring and had been drinking heavily. she says it doesn't matter. three navd students and footballers have been named. >> april 2012 you went to an off campus house party. what happened? >> i was drinking. i had drank a lot, and then from that point on i really don't remember what happened. i woke up the next morning with bruises and i knew something wasn't right. >> she then heard from friends. >> there were things on social media i was completely unaware of. >> do you remember anything? >> i remember waking up but i do not remember any of the assaults or sex y'ally engaging any of these individuals. >> did you know these men? >> yes. >> all three of them. >> yes. >> you said you had a lot to drink and you don't remember remember anything. how, then can you be so sure of what happened? >> well, one i have outside witnesses. the ataerks had bragged about it. they had told me to my face what they did. >> they bragged it about to your face? >> yes. >> what did they say. >> one of the individuals tweeted the train ticket was a low meaning didn't put up any fight an it was easy to engage in sexual acts and he said it was funny. >> what did he say to you? >> he said don't be mad. i'm saying it to your face i'm just joking. >> that you were easy. >> mm-hmm. >> immediately following that night the student went to see a doctor at the naval academy. she was offered a rape kit but refused. she said she was in denial. she didn't officially report the incident to the school until this january. a month later she told her mother. >> what did she say to you, do you remember that moment? >> she said after the international ball i had been raped, and i just -- i mean what do you say. i just told her i'm sorry. i'm sorry for her. the only thing i can do just be there for her. >> reporter: after reporting the incident the student says she felt ostracized from her fellow shipmates made to believe it was her fault. the turning point came later during one of the academy's routine sexual assault briefings where she felt all eyes were focused her. >> it was really upsetting. i went into a bathroom in a stall and cried and there just so happened there was another girl in stall sitting inneth to me crying too. and she came out of the stall and she said you can come out and she said you can hug me and we hugged each other. i don't know her name to this day. i didn't know her prior to that. unfortunately we shared the same experience and it brought the whole situation to reality, that it's a much bigger problem than the one circumstance that happened. >> reporter: the mother and daughter are speaking out now because the akatdmycademy is not taking it seriously. when she told them she was worried about safety they made no effort to help her. >> reporter: do you worry today? >> yes. i receive add lot of hostility not only from the attacker bus from the sports. >> they issue add statement saying naval academy leadership is moderating the process of this and mod ter rating the appropriate allegations for adjudication adjudication. it is inappropriate to make any other public comment on this investigation as we risk compromising the military just sis process. >> whether to stay or graduate yurkts you want to do that. >> yes, it's been my dream for a long time. i'm not going to let this assault defymy me. i haven't lost hope. >> the naval academy also told us in a statement that sexual assault is a crime and has no place at the u.s. naval academy just as it has no place in the rest of the military. charlie and norah? >> so jeff, who is in change of investigating this. should these investigations be taken out of their hands and put in the hands of the prosecutor it didn't go far. it wasn't even taken up for debate in the house. >> what's the status of the three shipmen accused of the rape? >> hopefully it will increase the value. >> today's eye-opener at 8:00 is presented by hilton. >> i'm charlie rhodes with gayle king. president obama landed in northern ireland to attend the g-8 summit. he meets one-on-one with the other leaders. a new poll shows the president's approval rating has fallen eight points in the last month. new secret documents from nsa leaders gentlewoman snowden. major garrett, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the revelations came in "the guardian" newspaper. in 2009 while president obama was attending first g-20 in london united states used surveillance techniques to intercept messages from the president and other members of the russian delegation. there's no white house comment officially. the word is yes, in fact both countries spy on each other. no one is naive enough on either side to believe that doesn't happen. no indication whether it will come up in the conversation the president will have with the current president vladimir putin but it doesn't matter there's plenty of complications and disagreements. syria will likely dominate the conversation. president obama would like russia to coax or help it coax bashar al-assad the dictator out of power. russia disagree wants to keep him in power, biggest arms supplier. united states moving closer to military involvement in the syrian civil war, would like a diplomatic solution. russia opposes that no breakthroughs expected. what the u.s. hopes is they can minimize public discord between the two leaders. economic issues on the forefront here but clearly syria will dominate the conversations at the summit. >> thank you. snowden's disclosure is sparking debate whether he's a hero or trader. bob schieffer weighed in. >> martin luther king, jr., rosa parks, true heroes. i'm not ready to put him in that category. i don't remember them running off and lieding in china. the people who led the civil rights movement were willing to break the law and suffer consequences. i think what we have in edward snowden is a narcissistic man who decided he's smarter than the rest of us. i don't know what he is besides that but he's no hero. >> vice president cheney said he believes snowden is a traitor. he finds it deeply suspicious he left for hong kong. someone has been breaking into the computer of our investigative correspondent sharyl attkisson. security experts are trying to identify who did that. sharyl atkisson was in washington and joins us now. what was happening with your computer that made you suspicious. >> there were signs of unusual happenings in my home for many months, that was behavior at work and home. computers began turning themselves on and back off again during the night. i was able to verify and tape information on suspicious activities. i reported that to cbs news management in january since it included cbs equipment and systems. cbs hired an independent cyber security firm which conducted a thorough forensic analysis. that will adopt malware and phishing programs and that sort of thing. >> you've been reporting benghazi, ground breaking work on fast and furious program. what exactly did the intruder do or what were they looking for, do we know on your computer? >> with the investigation continuing, we can't give all the details, but the analysis found very unusual activity buried deep in the computer. the unauthorized party accessed cbs computer in my home on multiple occasions and specifically in december they used sophisticated measures to cover the tracks meaning they tried to remove an indication of their previous activity. we're not prepared to talk about the whos and who did this today but the computer is considered highly skilled and used sophisticated methods. >> this would be a fear for all of us but tell us your reaction to knowing this kind of invasion has taken place. >> when any unauthorized party comes into the home of an american and searches through their computers inserting or removing material whatever their reign is, it's a disturbing matter. i'm outraged anyone would do such a thing and cbs news takes this seriously. >> sharyl thank you very much. nelson mandla's wife is thanking people around the world for well wishers. the former south african president is in his tenth day of treatment for a lung infection. the current president said mandela is improving steadily. in an interview on cbs news a foormer bodyguard is speaking about his condition. he's criticizing treatment by the former president. outside the clinic heart hospital where mandela is treated. good morning to you. >> the former bodyguard, the man who spent 12 years at nelson mandela's side. he doesn't share the president's optimism believing nelson mandela should be set free and taken to a place other than a sterile hospital to spend his final days if indeed that's what these are. recently he was placed on special leave over accusations he leaked the fact this hospital is where nelson mandela is treated. the bodyguard had nelson's mandela's back for a decade. he was part of mandela's inner circle and followed the elderly statesman around the globe. now he's speaking out for the first time to cbs news offering a rare glimpse into the former president's life. he said the last few months prior to mandela's recent hospitalization have seen a slow decline. >> >> hes with gone fell off to sleep but interaction with other . >> the interaction with other human beings -- >> reporter: one of mandela's greatest joys was spending his retirement catching up on current events in local newspapers. >> says a lot. he loved the newspaper. >> reporter: critical of mandela's medical team saying they have restricted visits from old friends leaving him very lonely. >> it's actually sad because i believe, i still do they put him back into prison at this old age. he should have been engaging with his peers, people of his age group. >> van heerden saw mandela two days prior to his hospitalization and he said the hospital is the last place he would want to be now. >> his wish has always been to go home. >> he said it how many times. i want to go there. >> reporter: mandela's ancestral village, a place that has special childhood memories for him and where in his old age he's always been able to rest and find peace. with nelson mandela in the hospital his wife is always by his side. the statement she released today, the first of its kind is a very sober one. while she does indeed thank the world for easing what she referred to as the burden of their anxiety, there is no mention of whether or not nelson mandela is getting any better. instead, there is an air of resignation. >> very unusual for the bodyguard that worked closely with him to be speaking up. you can definitely hear how troubled he is about what's happening there. >> about his treatment. >> his wife is a remarkable woman. i would trust her to make the judgment. >> no doubt. miss connecticut is the new miss usa. erin brady, 25-year-old accountant and college student. she was crowned last night in las vegas. during the pageant miss utah was asked a question about the income gap between women and men. >> i think we can relate this back to education and how we are continuing to try to strive to figure out how to create jobs right now. >> she was having what i call -- when it goes on you can see how uncomfortable it becomes. she was having a moment. the fact is it will live online forever. i feel for her. you're in the heat of the moment. you're asked that question. you try to say something people will remember. now they will remember unfortunately. miss connecticut won. >> she's 50 years 50 years ago america's first astronauts made history in space. back on earth their wives faced their own challenges. sunday morning lee cowan asked four of them about the stress of living perfect lives in the spotlight. plus all that mattered back in 1994. do you remember the most famous police chase in modern history?
