Unlike last time going into this conclave there is no clear frontrunner and the potential Voting Alliance crossed geographic and theological divides. Truly this time anything could happen. It was like a team pep rally before the big game. The american cardinals leaving the college where they have been staying to the applause of the priests and seminarians there. Among the cardinals, a few find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings for an american being discussed as possible choices for pope. There seem to be two dominant voting blocs, those who want to reform the way the church runs itself and those who want to defend the roman period as the administration is called, which is blamed for many of the churchs problems. Oddly, an italian, Cardinal Angelo scola, champion of the reformst camp, and a brazilian, Odilo Scherer is a traditionalist. Neither thought to have enough votes to break through for the 2 3 majority in the early balloting. And a lot of people could flip through the middle as the vote shifts. Its happened before. Officials are investigating the incident and tell cbs news this kind of attack has happened before and turned out to be a scam. But with Cyber Attacks a daily occurrence, the fbi is pressing for answers. We hear about these types of attacks, there are sellcelebrities involved, but there are bigger attacks against more Sensitive Data every day. Federal Officials Say jamaican lottery schemes are growing at an alarming rate. A Senate Hearing on the problem is set for tomorrow. Jeff glor uncovered new information by going straight to the source. Jeff, good morning. Anthony, good morning to you. Investigators say its one of the most effective scams theyve ever seen bilking americans out of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. It does that by targeting the most vulnerable members of our population, often those who can afford to lose the least. So we traveled to jamaica to see where it began and to meet the scammers behind it. It sounds like a dream call. Your name was selected for 2. 5 million. Reporter then comes the catch. You need to pay taxes, okay. Only for 800. Reporter the jamaican lottery scam. It led us to one of the most dangerous areas of jamaica where the scam is so popular theres a hit rap song endorsing it. Reporter heres how it works. Scammers in jamaica obtain lists of Older Americans names and numbers. They then call the seniors usually tending to be with an american sweepstakes company telling them they won money. To get the prize, however, they first have to pay a fee. We have seen checks and postal money orders. Weve seen prepaid wire cars. Reporter tony gomez heads the Postal Inspection Service in miami. On the day we visited they intercepted this package. Headed for jamaica with 9,000 inside. Victims fall for it because scammers know what to say. Complaints across the country about this scam jumped from 1,800 in 2007 to almost 30,000 in 2012. Far more go unreported. In maryland we met 79yearold dorothy who last year was struggling to pay her familys hospital bills when she received a call. 8 million dollars. Reporter what made you believe them . Maybe i wanted to prove to my family i could help them. He just sounded so convincing. Reporter over seven months dorothy was scammed out of 30,000. Doug, with the aarp says the scam often starts with charm but with turn threatening. Theyll call 50 times a day, 300 times a week, until you give in. The thing thats most worrisome to me is they are the most Vulnerable People we have who are scared to death by these guys. We wanted to meet a scammer to see why they do this. These two women from maine were scammed by the same man. And this is his Facebook Page. We traced him to montego bay. A beautiful Tourist Destination but also it turns out the center of this ugly scheme. This is a complex crime that evolved. Reporter a special agent with homeland u. S. Security whose face we were asked to conceal for his protection gave us a tour with a Jamaican Police escort. The u. S. Partnered with the jamaican government to investigate these crimes. First, we got a look at how some conmen men are using this money. This man was involved with scamming and victims and used proceeds to build a mansion. Were going to head to grandville which is a dangerous area. A lot of gang activity. Reporter this neighborhood is believed to be the birth place of the lottery scam. The area i extremely rundown. It didnt take long to find suspicious activity. You can see Jamaican Police just pulled over a vehicle and talking to a few guys who they believe may be part of these lottery scams. The next day we set out to meet the scammer whose Facebook Page we had seen. He agreed to meet the producer who thought was bringing him money. He didnt know hidden cameras were rolling. Im in a situation where im in a deep hole. Maybe theyre in the same situation. They can get ahold of cash. They can borrow it. Reporter he seemed to be excusing his actions by saying americans have money. He claimed he was no longer involved. Thats when we walked up. Im jeff glor from cbs news wondering if we can ask you a couple questions about the lottery scam. The lottery scam. Go ahead. Reporter how long have you been part of it . About a week. Reporter we just want to ask you a couple quick questions. Stop following me. Reporter we want to get a couple answers. Thats all. With that, he ran away. Will scammers like him be stopped . The head of jamaicas major organized crime and Anticorruption Task force told us theyre trying. Im not going to tell you that we will get rid of every single one but we will bring this problem under control. Reporter until it is were likely to see many more americans like dorothy drained both financially and emotionally. I dont want nobody else hurt. He stole money from me. I was foolish enough to do it. I pray that some day god will forgive me. Reporter a congressional hearing on this issue is scheduled for tomorrow. Lawmakers will hear from victims, federal agents and local police trying to stop the problem. Also by the end of this month, new legislation should be on the books in jamaica making crimes easier to prosecute. It reminds me of what you are told as a kid. Truly this time anything can happen. 115 cardinals are getting ready to head to the Sistine Chapel to choose the next pope. This is the first time theyre seriously talking about americans. I think theyre in a spoiler role rather than possibilities, but nobody is saying its not going to happen. New york citys ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces was supposed to start today. But a judge threw cold water on the plan monday afternoon. Ultimately the mayor says the city will appeal the judges decision. Still unclear whether this is an actual attack or some kind of fancy scam but the fbi is trying to find out whos responsible for publicly posting the private records of some of americas biggest stars. Investigators say it is one of the most effective scams theyve ever seen, bilking americans out of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Im jeff glor from cbs news. The cardinals celebrated a special mass this morning in st. Peters basilica praying for guidance in selecting the new leader of the church. One of them predicts the conclave may last four or five days. Ever since Pope Benedict announced his resignation, theres been a great deal of talk about the future of the Roman Catholic church. Part of that future lies with the next generation of priests. Cbs evening news anchor scott pelley spoke with three young men who attend the north african Pontifical College in rome. Welcome. Thank you very much charlie. The north American College is just right around the college from where were sitting now, right over there, its been there for about 150 years. And its the place where handpicked students are sent from all over the United States to study for the coming priests in this church. And we had a wonderful time there yesterday. Well show you a little bit of that now. Why did you decide to become a priest . Personally i was very much reluctant to follow the call because of celibacy, and i ran from the call pretty hard. And tried to date my way out of the priesthood. But the hound of heaven caught up with me. And ultimately after college, i decided i had to give it a shot. I had to enter the seminary. Because i knew i would regret not giving it a chance. Greg, tell me why did you join . At 14 years old, i came home telling my family, my pastor im going to be a priest. And there was a hold on slow down, slow down. Youve got four more years of high school left. What would you like to see in the next pope who will lead the church through your early pcareers . One who will continue to work to not only just to proclaim that message but also to have the message in a way that opens and stirs up the heart of the believer. You want to see somebody who can light up a room. Yeah. Absolutely. Joining us here is scott pelley. Welcome. Thank you very much charlie. Great to be here. What a set. What a place, yes. Absolutely. Hundreds of years in the making. Exactly. If you want a little history, come here. You have talked to acceptable nar seminarians. Are they different . Very different. We were here in 2005 with the passing of Pope John Paul ii. We went to the north american Pontifical College then. These are young men who are chosen by their bishops back home in the United States as being really the best and the brightest, as we said in the piece last night. This is sort of the west point of seminaries in the world for American Students. And so i think as a consequence of that philosophically, doctrinally, these young men are very conservative because thats the kind of papacy john paul ii had, thats the kind of papacy benedict xvi had, and these are the products of that. These young men have come into the church during the reign of benedict xvi. Cardinal dolan, of course of new york taught there for a while. What did they say about what they think about the future of the church . Well, one of the most fascinating moments in that interview, norah, was when i talked about the sex abuse scandal and the challenges it presents. And one of the seminarians said were experts in this area for the world because america has suffered through this. We have figured it out. We are making amends. And if anyone should lead the church in this new era, it should be an american because we have more experience in dealing with this horrible horrible blight, more than anybody else in the world. So it will be interesting to see if the cardinals have the same idea. Well, these are all pretty conservative cardinals, yes. It will be interesting to watch. Thats why Cardinal Sean omalley of boston has gotten so much attention because theres some people that think that the church could send a strong signal by electing someone like Cardinal Omalley to pope because hes dealt with the sexual abuse scandal. He has very aggressively, as you know norah. In fact, he sold his official residence in order to get money to pay people who have sued the church over the sex abuse scandal. Hes been very proactive about that. You know, we all cover politics back in the United States and around the yorld. World. Its interesting, theres politics here right now, and then they go inside to the Sistine Chapel and its all prayer and voting. Thats right. Over the last many days they have been campaigning in the way that they do. Theyve been giving speeches to one another, talking about the things that each individual cardinal feels are the most important things that the church must do. And in that way, theyve gotten to know each other gotten to know the temperament of one another. And now theyll go back into the system chapel the roof of which the smokestack of which we can see from here. And will go into those ancient and secret deliberations. They were once thought to strike mainly teenage girls but in the past decade Treatment Centers have seen a 40 to 50 jump in the number of people over the age of 35 who were seeking help. Dr. Cynthia bulik, her new book called mid life eating disorders, your journey to recovery. You talk about misconception about Health Care Providers that it only effects younger women. Is that perception changing . It has to. Its done a disservice to so many people. We really need to clarify that eating disorders dont discriminate. What kind of disorders specifically are we talking about . Weve all heard of bulimia and anorexia. Those are the ones that is in everyones mind. Theres a new kid on the block. A new disorder called binge eating disorder. Its not new. Been around a long time. Its about to become a bona fide disorder in the catalog of disorders that the American Psychiatric association puts out. What that is binge eating the same as bulimia and a binge is eating an unusually large amount of food and feeling out of control but unlike bulimia, theres no purging. Theres no vomiting. So it causes a gain of weight. It can. Thats an important point. They come in small, medium and large. You cant tell by looking at someones size or their shape whether they have an eating disorder. Binge eating disorder does afflict people of all body size and leads to weight gain often. What triggers it over the age of 35 . We know eating disorders have a genetic component. What were seeing is there are some sort of new mid life triggers. Some are internal. One of the big ones is menopause. Oh no. Indeed. Puberty is a trigger. Menopause and puberty are hormonal upheaval. Appetite affects your sleep and mood and lead to unhealthy behaviors that pave that slippery slope. Are these people that had eating disorders in the past and are coming back after being suppressed for years or new cases . Three pattern. One of them is people who might have had an eating disorder as an adolescent and then they recovered and it smoldered for a while maybe but then there was one of the mid life triggers and reared its ugly head later in life. Some people theyve been chronic. Theyve had an eating disorder all along and the third group is smaller but intriguing and they are developing eating disorders over the age of 35. I want to know what to do. Most important thing, get an evaluation. Doctors arent aware of it. You bring that information in. You take the book and say this is me. I need help. How can i find help . We know that eating disorders in mid life can cause a lot of physical problems. Eating disorders always cause problems physically. When you are already ageing and your body is less resilient, youre at greater risk. Go in armed with the information. Get an evaluation and get help. All right. May i mention the book . Please do. Im talking about new yorks colorful Cardinal Timothy dolan. Hes enjoying the romans and the love is mutual. For the past week romans have been getting a taste of what new yorkers get all the time. The hearty laugh, the funny chokes. Im eager to get a new pope and get back home. Im running out of socks. The Big Personality of Cardinal Timothy dolan. God willing ill be home before palm sunday. Hes considered a long shot to become pope it hasnt stopped a local paper from putting him on the front page or people from chanting pope dolan after he gave mass on sunday. He always fills the room. Reporter 63 years old, the st. Louis native timothy dolan, has been a man of faith for a long time. He became a priest when he was 26 and rose through the ranks of the church becoming head of the milwaukee archdiocese in 2002 archbishop of new york in 2009 and finally he was elevated to the college of cardinals just over a year ago. We have been for a long time owning up to this expressing contrition, regret. Dolan is no stranger to controversy. Hes been criticized for his handling of the sex abuse cases in milwaukee where it was alleged he paid accused priests to leave the priesthood. He inherited a number of cases about sex abuse he had to deal with. He did what was the playbook of the American Bishops at the time in terms of having to deal with this. The scandal and churchs historical bias against americans puts dolan at a disadvantage when it comes to being pope. Dolan himself has gone out of his way to let everyone know he doesnt consider himself a candidate but that hasnt stopped some people from talking about the larger than life cardinal from the midwest. Whats interesting about dolan, a lot of talk about him. Its hard to pin down how serious it is. And in fact we were told that he had taken a walk with a cardinal that said he heard more about Cardinal Sean omalley from boston as a possible contender. We want to go back to gayle and anthony in studio 57. The winds of change wafting through the Catholic Church . A recent cbs news the New York Times poll found 69 of american catholics think the next pope should allow women to become priests. We have sister florence deacon. Good morning to you, sister. Good morning. Known for challenging the vatican. What exactly does your Organization Want in a new pope . I just like to clarify. We really arent challenging the vatican. Thats how the press sometimes portrays it. We would like somebody who is very aware that we are all church. That we are all the people of god. Pope benedict recently reiterated that in a presentation that he gave. What this would mean would be listening to all people and in particular its time to be listening more to women and including women more into the official structure of the church in the sense of having women in key leadership roles, women in some of the offices of the vatican, women as even official counselors. We have a college of cardinals that are official counselors of the pope. There could be a comparable council of women. Do you think there are women working behind the scenes . There are women in some of the curia in the vatican. Im encouraging they would have major leadership posts as well and even more of them. More of them in the leadership roles in the vatican. I think women are often the face of the local church in the sense of women are often involved in the local church. There was resistance to this. The vatican back in the spring said american nuns were pushing radical feminist themes. How did you react to that . Feminism is the radical idea that women are people. And if he wants to be calling us radical feminist with that in mind, i accept that definition. I accept that definition. The latest poll show that 69 of american catholics think its a good idea for priests to be able to marry. Where do you stand on that . I think thats a good idea as well. Its a discipline that the church has imposed historically over the last 1,000 years and it doesnt seem to be working anymore. Do you think nuns should be allowed to marry . We live in a community. Its a whole different organizational structure that we commit ourselves to each other and to the people of god and there are two kinds of priests. There are priests that belong to religious orders and religious order priests would not in my mind it wouldnt be appropriate for them to marry because community is an essential element. You must be as excited as everyone else is about choosing of a new pope. I think its time for a new possibility and new possibilities for women in particular. Thank you, sister. The price you pay for cable tv could be on the way down. It all comes down to the antitrust lawsuit cable providers in the country claims viacom forces it to buy its less popular channels and that results in higher bills for you. Rebecca jarvis shows us what the suit could mean for viewers nationwide. Reporter its something that cable tv customers have become accustomed to. Hundreds of channels to choose from but not necessarily ones they asked for. But that could soon change. Because of antitrust cablevision filed against viacom its main cable contact. Cablevision doesnt want to pay for networks that are very low rated. When viacom does a deal with cablevision, it says you can either get all of our networks together, all bundled up in one, or you get none of them. Reporter the suit a little viacom is forcing cablevision to carry and pay for 14 lesser known channels in order to carry must haves like mtv, Comedy Central and nickelodeon. Cablevision says this practice violates antitrust laws and is therefore illegal. What does cablevision have to prove in order to win this case . That viacoms bundling practices cause either higher rates consumers have to pay for their subscriptions or the inability to access innovative quality programming. Reporter experts say one of the main Drivers Behind the case is the growing popularity of streaming Services Like apple tv and netflix, forms of a la carte tv that could soon become the norm. Cablevision wants a world it selects only the channels it wants to give customers and not the channels it doesnt. Reporter viacom responded to the suit saying it offers volume discounts to providers when the channels are taken together. In a statement, the company said, this is not more than a blatant attempt by cablevision to use the courts to renegotiate the terms of a Distribution Deal reached only two months ago. We are fully confident in our position. For customers who have only seen their cable bills increase a win for cablevision could reverse the trend. If cablevision actually wins this lawsuit, theres a chance their cable bill will actually decrease in price. Thats a pretty big deal. For cbs this morning, rebecca jarvis, new york. You also get a sensation youre paying for a lot of shows you dont watch on network. Those are two different issues. Youre dealing with the idea you are funding certain shows by paying for bundles on all ends which is important. Like could you pull the titles out and still have it work financially. He was reacting to a complaint that a teacher tied up a 2year old girl in masking tape for refusing to take a nap. That person, who no longer works at the school, allegedly took a picture of the incident and showed it to staff members. Police are now investigating. A San Francisco supervisor plans to introduce a resolution today denouncing some political ads now displayed on public buses. The ads show images and quotes that link islam with terror. Santa clara county prosecutors are widening their investigation into former supervisor george shirakawa, jr. , looking into another possibility of a forged signature, this time in connection with a race for San Jose City council. How about some mid70s in the afternoon hours in the valleys . 60s and 70s around the bay and some 60s toward the coastline. Next couple of days, we are going to see plenty of sunshine probably the peak of the heat, some temperatures near 80s by tomorrow, then well cool down staying dry through the weekend. We are going to check out your timesaver traffic coming up next. The fog is not making it easy on the roads blanketing our 880 camera and this is obviously still very slow. Northbound 880 looks like that is in san leandro as you as you make your way towards the downtown oakland exit. Southbound 880 though is still moving fine down towards oakland airport.
