Mark phillips this morning has the latest from the crash scene in Eastern Ukraine. Reporter finally after three days of international outcry, authorities here, the Rebel Authority who is control this area have begun to remove the bodies of those at least some of them 200 were told to refrigerated rail cars nearby, but theres still at least a hundred bodies, many of them entangled in the wreckage. Its the worlds biggest crime scene, and the prime suspects are in charge of it. Foxes guarding the hen house. Rebels from the prorussia military are accused of shooting down the plane, the rebels deny it. The clues as to how the plane was brought down are perhaps hidden among the wreckage strewn over miles of remote countryside. Its a missile, assuming there was a missile. Signs of impact or explosion, but no comprehensive investigation by competent aviation experts have begun in the first days following the crash. In fact, the first attempts at organizing an inquest by an advance team by the ose, the European Security body were restricted by the militia groups that control the site. The rebel groups promised cooperation, but the message hasnt reached the people on the ground who allowed only restricted supervised access and the organizer Alexander Hoot was not happy. We respect inaudible reporter the local commander wasnt much more helpful when we spoke with him. When will you allow inspectors on the site, i asked him. Tomorrow . Maybe, he said. But tomorrow has been a Long Time Coming here in the midsummer temperatures have been rising. The rebels say they had to start removing the bodies because they had begun to bloat and decompose, and the Central Government in kiev now agrees. The rebels have been accused of tampering with evidence, but one mans tampering is anothers humanitarian gesture. In any event they seem to have been recovering remains from open ground, many of the 298 victims here are entangleed and mutilated in the wreckage. Some possessions have been gathered and placed in piles, again, whether this is tampering or organizing is open to interpretation. There are no refrigeration facilities on site, and little in the area. Indignity has been pileed on tragedy here. Unlike the mysterious disappearance of malaysia airs other open flight over the ocean earlier this year, theres no doubt where this one ended up. But plenty of argument over who did it and no comprehensive inquiry to find out how. This is the kind of part that forensic investigation will be looking at. This is the tail section of the plane. This would have been the upright rudder. And there are holes in this thing, deep gouges at the leading edge that would appear to be to the untrained eye to be the indication of some sort of skl shrapnel or penetrating metal. Its the sort of thing investigators should be looking at now. And the longer it takes for an investigation to begin, the more suspicion will grow that somebody here has something to hide. Cowan next, Martha Teichner on the way forward. Cowan the aftermath of any plane disaster involves intensive search for clues and evidence, and soul searching as well. Russian president Vladimir Putin held the u. S. Backed ukranian government responsible. This blame game at the highest levels is a potentially dangerous extension of the nasty regional conflict in the ukraine. In march, russia annexed crimea, a chunk of the ukraine where a lot of ethnic russians liveed and got away with it. Then moscow pushed on, supporting the separatist rebels in the Eastern Ukraine who want to break away and join russia. The United States and the European Union imposed limited financial sanctions, but have been reluctant to pick too big of a fight with Vladimir Putin for fear of retaliation in the areas of energy, trade and international cooperation. That is, until the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight 17. The status quo cannot persist. Putin has gotten himself into a terrible mess. Really the most awkward position you could think of any russian leader in 30 years, maybe 50 years. Reporter steven, a former u. S. Ambassador at large to the soviet union is a senior fellow at the council on foreign relations. Putin is not ready to go down in flames for a bunch of rag tag separatists in Eastern Ukraine. If he does, he will show himself to be far more short sighted and incompetent leader than he looks right now. The most likely scenario here is for putin to try to find a way to ease the pressures on him, to reduce the tensions and challenges that are largely of his own making. Reporter more than half the victims from flight 17 were from the netherlands. The maine forest with fast rivers and lakes is not so very different today than it was when Henry David Thoreau journied here in the 1800s. To canoe the waterways, climb its mountains and learn from his indian guides. I began to be exhilerated by the sight of the wild fur wi and spruce tops. It was like the odor of cake to a school boy. This year, a hearty band of modern day explorer set out to trace the third and most ambitious jur journey from moosehead lake, 325 miles in all we caught up with him after four days of hard paddling in the wind and rain. Theres something for me, knowing that those birds that woke me were the same birds that woke pullitz 100 some odd years ago. One of the important things for me was to put the landscape in my body. For thoreau scholar, the lantdscape brings new meaning to thoreaus words. Ive never taken this canoe trip. So to do this, it feels like i can read thoreaus words, when ive actually been in the landscape myself and i had my experience there, its a different experience. I go back and read the same words ive been reading over and over again, and i see them entirely differently. Do you think he saw himself as an explorer or an observer. Always an explorer, but his explorations arent just physical, theyre spiritual explosion. Had interest was a deep interest in other people and their ways of being in a certain kind of landscape. Thoreau wrote, i have much to learn of the indian. Nothing of the migary. He made a list of indian words he learned. The indian words that my guides gave me, gave me a new way of seeing things. It gave me words for things that i only had scientific ones before, and because of this, he saw them in a new light. On the morning of day 5, the rain stopped, the skies began to clear, and the band set out again heartened by the promise of sun. It is beautiful out here. Mountain was shrouded in mist. Catodin means greatest mountain. Its the tallest in maine, but thats irrelevant, because my ancestors wouldnt have known its the tallest. So theres an inherent greatness beyond its the tallest. Good times and bad times ive seen cowan next, a last curtain call for Elaine Stritch. And later to show you how youthful i am, i intend to campaign in all 13 states. Cowan Ronald Reagan standup president. Hard way, baby. Elaine stritch was indeed a broadway baby as that song says. And what a lady she was to her many, many fans right up to the moment of hefr passing on thursday. If there ever was anyone who believed age was just a number, it was Elaine Stritch as i learned when i talked to her just a few months ago. Oh, my god, look at that. Shes 89 years old. Do you feel 89 . No. Sorry i asked. Im sorry you asked too. Cowan it was february just before she took ill when we sat down with Elaine Stritch, and true to form, she held nothing back. You are lt let me finish. You are one good looking fellow. I tell you the truth. Cowan years ago, we could have been a thing . Oh, my good yes. She took broadway by storm. Cowan elaine stitch captivated audiences, from sail away to bus stop, and edward olbys a delicate balance. I apologize the full force of your brutality. Cowan stritch was poignant, funny, craftable, and downright brassy. That throaty, unmistakable voice became synonymous with composers, and her rendition of the ladies from lunch. Immortalized in a documentary of the same name. Thats one hell of a good take. I want you to come in and listen i never held a tony award before. Cowan she won that toney and three emmys. The most recent for nbcs 30 rock. But you and women disaster, divorce, broken engagements. I assume she played alec baldwins fire cracker of a mother. All i want is to be happy. Since when did you ever care about happiness . Dont talk to me like that, jack. Cowan time, however, intruded into her life in a not so delicate matter, and in true Elaine Stritch style she decided to make aging a performance. Your hair looks good for a change. Cowan she let filmmaker document her life off stage in a projects fittingly called Elaine Stritch, shoot me. Its an anthem for aging, in a way. She makes a Statement Like this is who we r and this is what happens in your life, and you need to expect it at every stage. Cameras are on her everywhere as stritch was preparing for one of her final shows in new york. Virgins are sdrifrngtly nervous, cowan its unfiltered as you might imagine. I did virginia wolf on broadway, for the first time i had an orgasm. Did you really have an orgasm on stage, your first one . Would you make that up . Cowan you really did . Youre damn right i d. Im happy. Cowan but while frank, the film is also poignant, and sometimes heartbreaking. It documents her slow decline. Her failing memory, left her inability to remember lyrics. And that seemed to frustrate her most of all. Mama has got to go. Mama has mama is letting go . I dont think ive had a happy life. Cowan you dont . No. Cowan all the success . Success doesnt mean a damn thing. Cowan it wasnt the first thing stritch put the bumpy parts of her life in lights. Its like the prostitute once said. Its not the word work, its th stairs. Elaine stritch at liberty took new york by storm. It was a confession of sorts, just her and a stool opening up about life, love, and her infamous battle with alcohol. Youre scared, you drink. Youre not scared. What is the problem . Cowan you didnt go on stage for a long time without having a drink . I think drinking is part of performing. Cowan even though you frp confident you had the talent . Frightened to death. I had to be entertaining. I had be entertaining the folks. I had to. Cowan thats a lot of pressure. Is it ever. Everyone from Marlon Brando to kirk douglas. He fell in love with me. And hes still alive. Hell tell you. You want to talk about your date with Marlon Brando . I talked about it. Nothing happened. He wanted something to happen . I didnt know. Cowan you were a virgin . Yes. And i didnt know how to make love. I knew how to fall in love. Cowan her one and only husband was actor john day. But when he died of cancer, at just 53, stritch again escaped into a bottle. She eventually stopped drinking, but explaining that decision on our own Charles Osgood in 1966, she said it was less about her health and more about her career. I had a good reason for stopping drinking, i think. I wanted to find out if i had any talent natural. I wanted to find out if i really could act, if i really could interpret a song. Theres no business like snow business like no business i know. Cowan she stayed sober for more than two decades. In her final years she decided she could handle one drink a night. Still for haunting insecurity remains i love you. Cowan at the new York Premiere for her documentary, she was welcomed with open arms. Cowan but it wasnt until the end of the film when she got it standing ovation that she truly felt shed delivered. And seeing the audience and watching you [laughter] its just too much, im telling you. Cowan for this life long performer, it was still about the audience. Whats it like when everybody starts applauding . Fantastic. Got to happen. Or else cowan stritch left her beloved new york last year to return to detroit to be close tore family. It seemed even then she knew she had precious little time left. A bullet lodges an inch away from his heart. Reagan is rushed into the operating room and tells doctors, i hope youre all republicans. Presenting to you, the president of the United States. Our 40th president survived, of course, and besides his toughness, the shooting showed the American People that the great communicator also had quite a sense of humor. Hes in the second grade in the Riverside School in rockville center, and he said, i hope you get well quick, or you might have to make a speech in your pajamas. Throughout his career, reagan used humor, to make friends and influence voters. You already are the oldest president in history. Slay the opposition. No one knew that better than walter mondale. I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience. [laughter] he wanted law and order in the town. Youve got t. Reporter a former hollywood actor and spokesman for general electric, reagan knew how to make his humor seem off the cuff, accept that it wasnt. Iment mike devers in his book said i had a short attention span. I was going to reply to that, but lets move on to something else. Reporter you can talk to any member of president reagans speech writers, and when they hand him a speech, sometimes theyd come back with a quote or expression or a joke they hadnt seen before. The gipper had a secret comedian weapon jauz john highbush, executive director of the reagan library. So this is the contents of the last desk he used. Two boxes filled with the objects that were siting in president reagans desk. I wanted to see that stuff. Buried inside of the boxes, a stack of index cards. The president s famous one liners, his best jokes. This is the humor of president reagan on three by five. One liners. Adolescence is when children feel responsible for answering the phone. As unassuming as they look, they were political dynamite, a war chest of jokes, many he wrote himself, others he borrowed. Someone once said that as long as there are final exams, there will be prayer in school. I can rment when a hot spory broke, and a reporter ran in yelling stop the chisel. We showed some of the jokes to drew carey. I wondered what the 10 commandments would look like if moses had run them through the congress. About the soviet union. What are wrong with soviet culture. Spring, summer, autumn and winter. And about himself. Just to show you the best one. To show you how youthful i am, i intend to campaign in all 13 states. Heres a guy who wasnt afraid to make fun of himself. Whatever you think the elephant in the room is thats what you should be able to joke about. The first thing i do is make a joke about the way i look and innoculate myself. When i go for a physical they dont ask me how old i am, they just carbon date me. His ability to joke about pretty much anything, long predated his career in politics says his daughter, patty davis. She says it was a life long coping mechanism. I think that everything about my father goes back to the fact of him being the child of an alcoholic. He protected himself against the unpredictability of his home by developing this sort of coating of humor over everything. I dont want to feel the pain here, and the unpredictability here. You blamed mistakes of the past, and you blamed the congress. Does any of the blame belong to you . Yes, because for many years, i was a democrat. At home, davis also saw another side of her fathers humor. The reason that we impersonating the distinctive high pitched voice of writer truman capote. Black and white idea. Trying to imagine Ronald Reagan imitating truman capote. To me, because i was idealistic, i thought this could be like hes putting down gay man or something. He really wasnt. He just thought it was funny. Reporter and one more reagan family joke. After that assassination attempt, the gipper told nancy, honey, i forgot to duck. Next. Here you go. Home is where the heart is. ,,,,,, protecting homes and the people who live in them. Its all part of a firefighters job. Providing a home away from home for someone who needs it go above and beyond. Heres steve harper. Reporter fire station 1 in lansing michigan is not a restaurant, but it does have a regular customer. Here you go, tony. You want some koolaid . Reporter tony has a mental disability, but not an eating one. He never missing a peel here. The firemen pitch if for his food and transportation to and from, and thats just a small sampling of the service they provide him. Tony has his own place, but heet pretty much and he has a job at a flower market, but pretty much works there, and otherwise, hes at the station six hours a day 365 days a year for almost 60 years now. Yeah. It was 1953 when at the age of 13, tony went up to some firemen in the neighborhood. Did they invite you to come to the station . Yep. And you never lcht . Nope. Over the years things have changed, however. What started as an act of kindness for a kid has clearly evolved into something much more. Its really special. I cant put it into words. Reporter a lot of the guys couldnt put it into words. Hes like family. Hes just family. We definitely use the word family. Reporter and they treat him as such. So coddling here. They play jokes on tony like take his cane. Hey, and tony right back. My he calls the battleian chief his assistant. I just got demoted again. I thought youd get it straight. The firefighters do his laundry, clean his hearing aids and bathe him. What if the guys werent her. What would your life be like . I dont know. You dont like thinking about that . No. Reporter fortunately, he never will have to think about that. Tony has a place forever. Reporter all the firefighters pitch in. But at station one, they are, before they ever leave the building. All right. Ahead. Remember a lot the stage Michael Douglas built. And later. You have to honor. And drunk at a party. And the wives of the astronauts. Heres lee cowan cowan hes Michael Douglas. A stage struck fearful actor to superstar wasnt an easy one. Tracy smith caught up with him for heartfelt questions and answers. The views from the Eugene OneillTheater Center in connecticut are incomparable. Especially when you look back. Since 1974. In my University Productions i had a waste basket off the stage, and i would get sick every time before id go on the stage. It was a struggle. I used to wonder a lot of times why i was trying to do it because it was not something that came natural to me. It took a long time to get over that. He lived her during summer stock, and his first job at oneill wasnt on stage, but on a work crew. You came here to work construction, which i think to some people might sound a little crazy. I mean, you knew your dad was mr. President , theres a military plot to take over the government. The elder douglas who was a hollywood legend didnt think much of his sons acting ambitions. He wanted him to go to law school. He wanted you to be a lawyer . Yes. The first time he saw me he said michael, youre terrible. I dont know what to tell you. That must have been crushing. If he said something different, i would know hes lying. So you came here has a rite. Its an opportunity to have summer jobs to come here and help build this place this is the first year the oneill was starting, and in return for my free labor, i might get a small part in a production. It was 40 or 50 feet in the air. A little crows nest. He helped dig out the enormous pit that came the oneill amphitheater. Thats something to having actually built this and having your handleds on t. I remember a lot of wheel barrows full of dirt to create these levels. And in return, he got a small part in the 1966 production of bedford forest. Thats him with the sword. You smoking anything stronger . Nothing special. Douglas would go on to much bigger things with a few bumps on the way. The same is true of the place that helped launch him. In the early 1960s, the oneill site was an abandoned eye sore that belonged to the town of waterford, and the plan was to build the old building down as practice for a fire department. But a local visionary steped in to save them. George white was a young Yale Drama School grad who dropped by. And never thought much of the place until inspiration struck. We looked up the hillside. He was sailing with his wife on Long Island Sound one day back in 1962, right around this spot, he looked up and saw the Old Buildings on a hill above the beach. He had himself an idea. What made you look up and say here . The barn. The barn . Its like Mickey Rooney and judy garland. Lets put on a show in a barn. In a barn . Yeah, a barn. And its a great barn. And the rest is american theatre history. By 1964, white had begun turning the barn and other building sbos a perm theatre camp and nameed it for a man who fwrue up nearby, u19 oneill. It became a place where the most promising writers and composers could see their new plays and musical splashed out by up and coming actors. And the formula worked. Composer len morando used the time perfect the Award Winning musical the hype. The list gets longer every year. Come a long ways. Composer janine became the current broadway smash violet. What role did the anneal play in your life. The oneill was the first . Uegds to sainstitution to say. The great thing the oneill does is present you with a compass and it says heres where north is.
