Searchers are calling it an acoustic event. Today more sounds were detected in the hunt for the missing Malaysian Airlines jet and the 239 people aboard. Our asia correspondent seth has more. Reporter for three days in a row now, fleeting signals have been detected from deep in the indian ocean. Today an australian ship, the ocean shield, which is carrying sophisticated listening devices reported pinger locator operators picked up a signal. That was about 300 nautical miles from where a chinese ship identified electronic pulses on friday and saturday. Chinas reports claimed those pulsing signals matched the frequency that would have been emitted from locater beacons on the flights black boxes. Officials in charge of the search say so far none of those signals have been confirmed to be related to the missing jetliner. Angus houston is the chief coordinator of the search. Obviously, we take any reported leads in the search very seriously. Thats why today assets were deployed to assist in further examining the acoustic signals. Reporter the effort to identify any signals coming from the deep has taken on greater urgency as the battery life of those black boxes lasts about a month. Today was the 30th day of the search. Officials had cautioned that there can be lots of sounds in a deep ocean, and passengers family members weve spoken with in the last fourplus weeks have told us that so far all of those possible leads have only provided false hope. But first, our ,,,,,,,,, the natural was a novel turned into a movie with Robert Redford about a ballplayer, a phenomenal and seemingly completely natural talent. Whether nature or nurture is the source of a superstars talent is something science has been looking into. Our sunday mornings Susan Spencer with 48 hours. Reporter in 2010 at age 30, thenphotographer Dan Mclaughlin made an amazing announcement. Im going to quit my job in january and im going to be a professional golfer and people are like, we didnt even know you golfed. Im like, i havent golfed yet. laughter but im going to start in january. Reporter his goal, the same as tiger woods and phil mickelsons, to compete on golfs pro tour. The basic idea is that there is no inborn innate talent, that pe kind their own abilities through deliberate practice. Reporter and so he practices six days a week, six hours a day. He is halfway to his target of 10,000 hours, the time an influential study claims is required for true expertise. But even his coach has doubts. What do you think his odds are . Its small. laughter its small for anybody. Well, its small for anybody. You got a better chance of being a surgeon or a you know, statistically. Reporter whether or not he makes the tour, dans experiment could shed light on an ageold question are elite athletes born to greatness or can practice, in fact, make perfect . The only real rule is tremendous individual variation. Reporter David Epstein wrote the sports gene, a look at how much athletic greatness is genetic and how much is learned. His answer . 100 of both. No two people respond to training in exactly the same way because of their genes. A very important kind of talent is the ability to profit more rapidly from one hour of practice than the next guy does and thats very much mediated by your genes. Reporter two high jumpers make the case. The 2004 olympic Gold Medalist stephan had trained for 20 years. The guy who beat him for the 2007 world championships, donald thomas, took up the sport just eight months before the games. And theyre two guys who are basically at the same athletic place through two completely different paths, so theres no blanket answer for two athletes doing essentially the same thing. Reporter but 10,000 hours is such a great thing to latch onto. If i just do this for 10,000 hours. The 10,000hour rule is very attributive. It gives people hope but it suggests if people arent getting the same benefit they arent trying as hard. Reporter there are some advantages. There are definitely sports genes where sometimes a single gene makes a difference to somebodys athleticism. Reporter genes that taylormake a body for one sport and create some unusual proportions. Take nba allstar lebron james. No surprise the basketball prodigy is tall, 68, but his wing span is seven feet. Teammate dwyane wade is 64. His arms are 611 across. At the far other end of the spectrum, the tiny gymnasts, becoming tinier every time. So a lead female gymnast in the last 20 years have shrunk. Better for them to rotate in the year. Reporter genetic gifts for one sport dont mean much across sports. Michael phelps odd body type make him an unlikely track star but just watch him in the water. He has a very long torso which is great for swimming speed, short legs, large hands and feet. Reporter David Epstein says todays intense competition is what has weeded out all that the athletes whose body types are perfect for the job. The extremes that produces are shockingly clear in photographer howard shetz portraits of sports stars. You might wonder if these people are even from the same species. From 95pound figure skaters to 700pound sumo wrestlers. But perhaps the best illustration of how one body type can dominate a sport is marathon running. I wish we a view of the finish line. Whats to see . A woman from norway, a guy from kenya and 20,000 losers. Reporter signfeld was onto something. One small tribe in kenyas riff valley has produced 8 of the top 10 fastest marathon times ever recorded. So what is it about the genetic makeup of these people that gives them this huge advantage . A hot and dry climate causes the evolutionary adaptation of very long, slender body types. Long legs proportional to body size which is good for running and very thin at the extremes. Thats extremities. Reporter thin legs means it takes less energy to run. Growing up at High Altitude produces great endurance. And theres incentive to train. In kenya winning marathons can be a ticket out of poverty. The winner of the 2013 tokyo marathon is going to add another victory to his career. Reporter last years chicago winner was growing potatoes until four years ago. Now he trains about 100 miles a week. You have a group of people who have on average, just on after itch, the right biological build and then this huge desire and willingness to try their hand at training. Reporter but others insist it is really the training that makes the difference. Joe baker is a professor of kinesiology at torontos york university. What is the best predictor of elitism . Who will be an elite athlete . Without any question and any hesitation, its practice. Yeah, absolutely practice is the number one predictor of how good somebody gets at anything. Reporter because he says intense practice hones natural athletic skills. Skills that may be useless at something we havent practiced. Just ask the major league hitters, who on a lark, went up against olympic softball pitcher jennie finch a few years ago. So jennie finch is pitching underhand. Right. Eporter a larger ball. Yep. Reporter and a slower speed. So theyre figuring, hey, this is a piece of cake. But it wasnt. The big shots couldnt even hit foul balls. laughter the brain develops a very sophisticated rule set that tells them how to anticipate 100mileanhour fastballs or 80mileanhour curveballs but not balls that are thrown with an underhand from a female thats twothirds of the distance away from them. Reporter their genetic gifts didnt help. Theyd never practiced against jennie finch. And it has nothing to do with desire or talent or persistence. It has to do with the fact that their brain is just wired in a completely different way. Reporter and while the debate over what really makes an athletic star rages on, Dan Mclaughlin just keeps on practicing, six days out of seven. In golf, i dont know anybody whos better than me whos practiced less or put in less time. Reporter down now to a four handicap, already better than 95 of all amateur gochers golfers and determined to nurture what nature gave him to work with. This is mike wallace in new york. You may begin. Good luck, everybody. Yay reporter right now many of you out there may be asking just what the heck is mah jongg . Its an inscrutable game. Its played with tiles decorated in tark kers and symbols that originated in china some time between 500b. C. And 1875 a. D. , a rather imprecise estimate. The game then migrated halfway around the world for some reason to the jewish neighborhoods of new york. After the fad of the 20s when it was on the cover of the saturday evening post in 1924, it was just pervasive in pop culture. Reporter marvin pinkard is director of the Jewish Museum of maryland, now hosting a traveling mah jongg exhibit. For nonmah jongg players, i think that theres still a stereotype out there that its your mothers game. But i think that that may be changing too. Reporter changing slowly. At the las vegas tournament, there were a few younger players. And even a few men. Fanatics all. How long have you been playing . 63 years. Fun, fun, fun. Reporter have i mentioned its a complex game . They say this is like gin rummy but it looks a whole lot more complicated than that. Its like a card game. Youre going to put together runs of numbers. Thats the easy part. The next thing is it has many more suits than gin rummy and lot of little rules. The different tiles we have, theres a bamboo or a bam. Theres the dots. Theres a crack. Reporter there are cracks, bams and dots. Not to mention wins, flowers and dragons. Mah jongg reporter oh, we have a winner. Its difficult for the players to explain no matter how hard they try. I needed a pair and you cant use a joker on a pair. Reporter ah, of course not. I would never, ever think of doing this. For two days, play was fast and furious. So if you need them to power your tiles, your raise your hand. Reporter so fast it can turn your tiles sticky. Nothing can stop them. Endurance when you play all day . Reporter this tournament may be over, but mah jongg madness rages on. Next, the rockefeller who vanished. And later actor nicolas cage. ,,,,,, its sunday morning on cbs, and here again is charles osgood. It was big news back in ate 1961 when Michael Rockefeller vanished off the coast of new guinea. The young man with the famous name was never found. But now, after more than 50 years, jim axelrod tells us the mystery that may have finally been solved. Reporter there are few places on earth as remote and timeless as the jungles of new guinea. It is a land of endless swamp and home to the asmat people, who today live much as they have for 10,000 years. It is also a place modern civilization has paid little attention to, at least, that is, since 1961 when the eyes of the world were focused here, trying to solve a mystery involving one of the nations most prominent families the rockefellers. I got a call when i was at lunch with my brother david from the ambassador of the netherlands saying they had a wire cable from new guinea to the effect that my son michael and dutch official were reported missing. This is someone on the order of the lindbergh baby disappearing without a trace. In one of the worlds most forbidding places. Reporter carl hoffman is a journalist who has spent the past 2 1 2 years trying to uncover the fate of Michael Rockefeller, son of new york governor Nelson Rockefeller, greatgrandson of standard Oil Billionaire john d. Rockefeller. What was Michael Rockefeller doing in this part of the world . The Nelson Rockefeller started the museum of primitive art in 1957. It was the first Museum Dedicated exclusively to primitive art, and michael had been schooled in art the way most American Kids are schooled in and boys are schooled in baseball. And because he loved art so much, he heard about these people on the southwest coast of asmat who were spectacular carvers, and he wanted to go to asmat and collect art and bring it home to the museum. Reporter just 23, michael traveled village to village in what was then a dutch colony. He took hundreds of photographs and collected a stunning array of artifacts including the ceremonial beach poles, canoes and other pieces still on display in the wing named for him at new yorks metropolitan new york of art. But on november 18, 1961, he was traveling in an open boat with dutch anthropologist renee wassing when tragedy struck. It was a beautiful day. That was the thing. It wasnt a storm. The sun was shining, but they hit these waves. So they hit the waves and the boat a wave swamped the inogen with no power. They flipped over. Reporter do you remember what your father said to you . I can remember the telegram that he held up, and he said, i have very troubling news. Reporter it is a memory that is long has long haunted mary morgan, born mary rockefeller, she is michaels twin sister. When your father first walked in and told you the news that michael was missing, what was your very first reaction . That he had died. Reporter you think i had a premonition before he left. Im headed out there with my daughter sos to be there. Hopefully, theyll find him before we get there but to be there when they do find him so that if theres something i can do, i will. Reporter by the time mary and her father arrived in new guinea, michaels companion rene wassing had been rescued. Before he jumped into the water, he took off his pants and his shoes. Reporter he described how michael strapped two empty gas cans around his waist and swam to shore. I told michael that i wouldnt dare because i would be exhausted. He said, well, i think can i make it. Reporter despite an exhaustive search, no trace of Michael Rockefeller was ever found. What do you think happened to your brother . I dont know. I mean, honestly, i could not tell you for sure, but i think that it would be an extraordinary feate for anybody to swim approximately 10 miles in that kind of choppy water and that kind of current that was taking him downstream. Reporter the official story for more than half a century has been that Michael Rockefeller drowned. How convinced are you that he died another way . Im absolutely convinced that he was killed by the asmat, didnt drown, that he didnt drown. Reporter and a dutch priest in asmat wrote his parents that he had heard that michael had in fact made it to shore and been reporter at the Renowned Explorers club in new york city, hoffman explained to a wrapped audience what he had discovered and written about in his new book. Shortly after Michael Rockefellers disappearance, asmat tribesmen told dutch missionaries an astonishing story. What happens from the moment he swims away from the boat . Michael swims through the night and the next morning arrives at shore and encounters a large group of men from its ja they and hes killed right then and there. What you have to understand is asmat were constantly fighting each other and they lived in a world in which one death required another in order to balance the world. Reporter rockefeller was killed, hoffman claims, in retribution for the killing years before of asmat tribesmen by dutch forces trying to establish control of the area. One death had to be balanced by another. It carried a sacred obligation. Reporter and heres where the story of michaels final moments takes a disturbing twist. You know, the asmat were fierce head hunters. They were cannibals. They would kill somebody and eat them because they were hungry, lets go to mcdonalds, they killed for complex ceremonial and sacred reasons. Reporter the missionaries who first heard of michaels true fate back in 1961 reported it all to their superiors. But hoffman says the dutch government and the church buried the documents. Its not my opinion that theres a coverup. The documents show there was a coverup. The documents say lets not tell rockefeller sr. The documents say do not if you hear more about this, do not say anything to anyone. Put it in a double envelope marked secret. To read this book, its a sensational whodunit by a wealthy Famous Family whose twin is portrayed as having been killed and cannibalized. To our family, michaels death is traumatic and real. Reporter mary morgan has spent her adult life struggling to come to terms with the death of her twin, a process she recounts in her new book. She is speaking for the first time now so people will remember her brother michael the way she remembers him. The story of who your brother was been overshadowed by how he died . Oh, yes. In the publics mind, absolutely. And its one of the reasons i wanted to accept your invitation to dom here today come here today, because i think michaels life michaels short life had tremendous meaning. His papers, his incredibly beautiful photographs, and his amazing Art Collection shows respect for the asmat culture. Who are so much bigger than this idea of cannibalism. That is his legacy. What this means now is paul and i can be married. laughter . Next the end of an era. They think salmon and energy. Idina menzels career seemed to defy gravity but she couldnt. On her next to last performance, she stopped the show by falling through a trap door and breaking her ribs. And worst of all this is 20 minutes later, the understudy got her makeup on and all the people were waiting to see her. She didnt go to the hospital to see how i was. They waited to see what was going to happen with the show. I was appalled reporter she got her final bow anyway. The next night, she hobbled on stage in a track suit. Let it go i am one with the wind reporter the mega hit let it go from frozen was nominated for best song and the voice behind it, idina menzel, who played elsa, was going to sing it live in front of the whole wide world. Then it would have been even a different fiasco so at least i was able to come through and end really strong. And adele dazeem, or whoever i am, is actually a really good singer. laughter . He had it all planned out, until one day his doctor convinced him at the end of your life doesnt have to beat end of the world. You can still find purpose. And for john, this was it. How you doing . I will promise you if i can give you two good scenes which i try to in every movie, then i feel like im doing my job. Where you guys from . Reporter fans have come to expect a certain style of nicolas cage. You see me how . Reporter hes like a simmering pot. You wait long enough and that slowpaced cage cadence of his will more often than not boil over. I said put the money back in the box. I dont believe in the term over the top. I believe in the term outside of the box. Lets take chances. Lets keep trying new things, and thats how you reinvent yourself, and thats how you stay fresh. Youre going to be fun, baby doll. How was that . Not so bad. Reporter nobody does outside of the box quite like nicolas cage. Over the last 35 years, its been his trademark. A, b, c, d reporter once even turned the alphabet into a disturbing psychotic tirade. Q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z may be the best recitation of the alphabet ever. Thank you. Im pretty proud of that. Reporter where does that explows ef part of you come from . Bam, bam, come off. Three linebackers in midair. He sprouted antlers like a gazelle, like an elk he scored a touchdown now its called a cagist which is funny in itself. But it is music. I think all of it, if you listen to different kinds of music, you have moments that are explosive, and you have quieter moments. Whats your name . Gary jones. Im joe. Reporter his latest movie out this week is called joe, and its full of those quieter moments. Why you sneak around like this . Reporter he plays joe, a southern excon at war with himself, both broading and funny, who befriends a boy in search of a father figure. I knew you could. I knew it. But you dont have to do that. Just stay here with me. Youll be safe here. I want to see how minimal i can be and get to the truth of the purpose formance, truth of the character with he motion and with feeling. Reporter cage calls it experimenting, and hes fond of it. Hes prolific as an actor, 60 films from drama to action to comedy. To the right reporter hell try anything. Let me know how it comes out. Reporter what is it about you that youre always working . Whether its big projects, whether its small projects, good ones, sometimes maybe not so good ones. Its what i believe in. I believe in work. Im a working dog. I am at my best when im working. Reporter it seemed work that he was born to do. His real last name is coppola, Francis Ford Coppola isnics uncle. Growing up his family name meant little. A skinny kid, he was bullied by the boys on the school bus until one day he found that acting just might save him. I put these cowboy boots on. I put these sunglasses on. I put chewing gum in my mouth. My older brothers leather jacket. And i went on the bus with all this attitude. And they said coppola. And i said, no, im jim wilkinson. Im his cousin. Im going to kick your ass. It worked. It was a power of attitude. It was the power of committing a character. And that was when i was, what, 9 . I was in fourth grade. Reporter his father, a prove, was professor, was fond of movies too. Your dad took you to arthouse films too. Yeah. I mean, i was watching reporter you were not seeing disney movies. No. I was seeing these movies at 5, 6. Wow. They gave me nightmares but now i love them. Reporter but it was when he was in high school that he saw a movie that would change his life. It was east of eden with james dean. And you see dean go through this extraordinary nervous breakdown. And it was i theatre i was a wreck. I was nothing affected me that deeply. I knew then that the power of film performance, what you could achieve with film performance, and thats when i said, this is what im going to do. Reporter theres a bond likeness of james dean perched high above hollywood now that cage brought us to visit. Its his touchstone in a way, the face of the man who inspired a young cage to get his first job at a downtown Movie Theater. I sold Movie Theater tickets, popcorn, and milk duds. laughter and i would walk into the theater and sneak in and watch movies and try to figure out how i could go from the concession stand to the screen. I got to get there. I got to get there. Reporter although he got a small part in fast times on ridgemont high, he kept running into an obstacle, the coppola name. Having the name that you did from your uncle made things tough. It wasnt so much that it was tough being coppola as it was you know, im in an audition trying to remember my lines for the audition but all the casting agent wanted to talk about was the wonderful movies my uncle made. By the time it was time for me to do the audition, id forgotten all of my lines. I couldnt do the audition. Reporter so he changed his screen name from coppola to cage, taken in part from a comic book superhero luke cage. The next audition he went on for valley girl, he got the part. That was very liberating. I can do this because of me, you know. Im actually able to do this. Reporter Francis Ford Coppola thought so too and eventually cast his nephew in peggy sue got married, butnic had some conditions. I said, okay, well, if i do it, will you let me do whatever i want . And he said, yeah. He goes, what do you want to do . I said, i want to go pretty far out. He said, how far out to you want to do you want to go . I said, i want to talk like pokey from the gumby show. I noticed you were giving me the silent treatment at lunch. Reporter and he did. I guess i deserved it. I figured out my threeyear plan. I figured its workable. Reporter and it got him noticed. Its what cher sort of clued in on, right . I still dont understand why. laughter it was amazing. Im looking to what i have to do to become a bride. A bride without a head. Oy without a foot reporter she sought him out for a role in her oscarwinning movie moonstruck. I said why you want me do this movie . She said, i saw you in peggy sue got married. It was like watching a twohour train wreck, and i think you would be so right for robbie. I said, okay, ill do it. Reporter he followed that up with vampires kiss where he famously ate a live cockroach. People told him not to do it, just like they told him not to take a part of a suicidal alcoholic in leaving las vegas. But it was the role that gave him something that even his idol james dean never got. Looks like im with the right girl. Reporter an oscar. Everyone said the script was too dark to be made in other places in hollywood. And i said, im never going to win an oscar anyway. I dont care. Reporter you figured you have nothing to lose . Yeah, not going for an Academy Award made it happen, just not even thinking about that. Reporter his personal life was getting attention too. Cage married actress patricia arquet. And then briefly, lisa marie presley. That really got the tabloids talking. By then he was commanding salaries well into the millions and he knew how to spend it. His lavish lifestyle left him owing the irs millions in back taxes. How bad a financial situation did you get in . Lets just say that its behind me, and im in a very good place right now. Reporter he just turned 50. Hes happily married to alice kim now and has his first grandson on the way. He could be known as a snake god. Reporter along with his new movie, he has about a half dozen others waiting in the wings. The kid who grew up wanting to be in movies has now been in more of them than most of his fans can count. Some work, some dont, but for nicolas cage, thats just all part of the ride. I am happy with the work that ive been able to do and the people that ive been able to work with and being able to make some of my creative dreams come true. Its always about talking chances and staying on the edge so you might find something really creative and really exciting. [ woman ] i could see it in their faces. They werent looking at me. Reporter i see the media is filled with gossip the u. S. Government might allow spy Jonathan Pollard to go free as a way to make israel make concessions to the plins in the palestinians in the peace drive john kerry is trying to ram down their throat. The president has not made a decision to release Jonathan Pollard. Reporter a few humble shots. First, Jonathan Pollard should never have been sent to prison for life. That sentence is off the charts compared with similar situations. Pollards conduct was obviously a disgrace but he has paid for it insanely. Hed been in prison longer than many people get for murder. Reports are that hes extremely unwell. This poor devil has been punished enough. More important, the palestinians in both gaza and the west bank do not recognize israels right to exist as a jewish state. How can israel possibly make peace with people who do not accept its right to exist . The palestinians exist to return to israel. That would automatically make israel into a majority nonjewish state within a short time. Obviously, this is also not a possibility for israel. Yet mr. Obama and mr. Kerry try to paint israel as a villain here and say israel built departments in east jim nearby and thats whats called the fantasy peace process. Maybe israel should not keep building those apartments. But it seems to me its a pretty small stumbling block compared to the palestinians refusal to acknowledge israel exists. I hate to break this to secretary kerry but no state can make peace with neighbors who allow terrors to come over to their country and kill civilians and refuse to agree that the state in question should exist as it was constituted. The bottom line truth, israel wants peace. It will cheerfully acknowledge a palestinian state if they get recognition. They wont agree to make peace with people who want to destroy them. Would we, would france, would england . Why should a perennial victorious israel sign its own death warrant to satisfy some antiisrael, antisemite campaigners in europe . Mr. Kerry is living in a wicked dream world. Time to wake up. And for heavens sake, stop torturing Jonathan Pollard.
