At some point i got a lot of stuff. I kept too much paper. Kept too many books. I kept too many clothes. Too much of everything. What is this in the corner . What you see is reading material. Soul that stuff . Joannes massachusetts home is packed with belongings she just cant park with. Are we talking about decades worth of stuff that youve accumulated in this room . Decades of stuff, yes. It has been picked up at times in the past. And the volume of clothing has overwhelmed me. More has to leave the house. Its not that she hasnt tried. After years of forcing herself to throw things out she can actually eat in her kitchen again. But garland continues to hoard. Items like wire handles from chinese take out containers. Its easy to bend and you never know when i might need it. How often do you end up needing it . Not very often. But you know, i hate to waste anything. Thats been part of my problem over the years. Garland is just one of millions of people who hoard. Its estimated that up to 5 of the u. S. Population has the problem. With equal number of men and women. A new cbs news poll finds that a third of all americans say they have too much clutter in their homes. Nobody else. I am the one that is the subject of hoarding is so sensational its become fodder for reality tv shows. We dont clear this space out you are going to jail. Thats the reality. But beyond the spectacle theres new recognition that hoarding is caused by a mental condition. Last spring for the very first time diagnostic and statistical manual of menial disorders, it is hand back for Mental Health experts, recognized hoarding as a specific disorder. Formal definition someone who has difficulty discarding or letting go of possessions. You accumulate more stuff than you need and have hard time saying goodbye to it. Thats exactly right two. Major components. But theres a third component. This is the inability to keep it organized. The diagnosis of hoarding as a mental disorder is no surprise to Smith College psychology professor, randy frost. This is a book for the general public about hoarding stuff. Hes been studying and writing about hoarding since 1990. The public has long been fascinated by dramatic stories on the subject. Back in 1947, for example, the bizarre sale of the collier brothers, dissenn dents of well to do new york family made headlines after their bodies were discovered in their jam packed townhouse. No Scientific Research has been done on hoarding until about 20 years ago. We put an ad in the newspaper thinking wed try to find somebody who had this behavior. We got a hundred telephone calls. With one little ad. What we discovered was they were houses that were really full but yet no one had ever talked to them, they never told anyone about it. Frost, 20 years of study have revealed some key findings. Hoarding affects people across the whole economic spectrum. Theres evidence that hoarding behavior is inherited at least in part. A significant number of hoarders also suffer from depression and the region of the brain that determines the importance of objects shows abnormal activity when hoarder are faced with making decisions about dealing with their belongings. The cut off for where this becomes a disorder really has to do with a place at which this behavior influences their functioning to the point that its harmful or impairing their ability. There are companies that help hoarders clean up and get rid of their stuff. But that may not really address the root of the problem. Randy frost and several colleagues have developed a program they called, buried in treasures, it helps hoarders understand and change their behavior. Lets check in go over the goals at support groups like these, pack rats as some prefer to call themselves, establish very specific weekly goals. And joanne garland had something to brag about. Michael was to tidy up the two bedside tables because i tend to read in bed and i did it. But she didnt have the same success sis. Well, i still have my pile of mail that i eat on top of. I sit there and look at it and i say, whats the anxiety, whats the fear, but i dont have an answer. In fact a big part of the support Group Approach is getting participants like micca to understand why they compulsively acquire things. Its an addition. I get a kick out of it. That is something the group has helped me with that the two most important things are being able to discard and slow down acquiring. For carol, even recalling the moment when she admitted she had a problem is painful. I just sat home i was surrounded by these piles i felt like i was suffocating. I think thats when i really knew that i needed help more than any other time in my life. Because i didnt want to be drowned by my stuff. I wanted to find a way to make my house a house again. Because it isnt right now. The members of this group do have a Success Story in their midst. Leader, lee shore. You have to prove it in actions. His neat kitchen now youd never know that eight years ago his home was such a disaster zone that his wife made him an ultimatum. Its me or the stuff. You have to make a decision. I made the choice to accept help right there. This basement was full. Through the buried in Treasures Program he has developed strategies for separating his belongings in to keep and give away piles. Though this basement way still look cluttered, compared it to this. Do you still keep yourself from adding more things, picking up some bargain somewhere . Yeah. The thing is i know that i havent changed as a person. Nobody else has either. You still have the impulse but your reaction to it changess over time. And some of the thrill is gone for me. But for lee and anyone else with the urge to hoard it is likely to be a life long struggle. You can do it, but its a lot of work. It is. Its work. It is work. Because you are replacing something that might have been the one thing that made life worth living. Thats pretty significant. Osgood next, look, no strings. [ cellphone rings ] hello . Osgood Technology Keeps transforming the News Business one hardy journalist embraced the Old Fashioned way. Using a machine thats just his type. A postcard from colorado. It is tuesday in the tiny colorado town of sowach theres a kind of ballet going on. A ballet of man and machine. Publisher dean combs is feeding paper in a press which grabs it, rolls it across lines of type, lifts it and turns it in to the sowach press. When was this thing developed . How old is this technology . Fairly old press being about 1915. There are other things in life that were made in 1915 that are still working. I knew i shouldnt have asked. The combs family has been publishing the crescent every week since 1917. This is his mother at the helm 27 years ago. The same intricate choreography, perfected and passed on. One generation to the next. They hooked my baby carriage to the back of the press, carriage would go back and forth. The newsroom of virtual time machine taking you back a century to a time when every big city daily used lineotype machines. In this composing room. Massive presses turned in to thousands of newspapers. Now computers do that work with one exception. I dont think there might even be another newspaper in the world, because there are none in the united states. This lineotype machine is a monster with 28,000 parts. Typing on the keyboard is the first step. And slugs become the columns of a newspaper. Now i want to change fonts. What do i do. We have to pull these two handles down. This is just its probably got a thousand letter molds in it. On my computer i click it changes the font. You have to pull this 60 pound thing off and put a new one in. Right. Its a lot easier on a computer. Somewhat easier. As long as your computer is working. Dean has bought other machines and stockpiled thousands of spare parts that he knows where everyone of them goes. He has no other choice. When the linotype machine breaks, who do you call . I have to call myself. Youre the repairman, youre it. The crescent will tell you about the Gardening Club and auditions for a melodrama. The heartbeat of a small town, population about 500. Is this important in a small town . Oh, yeah. Thats what the newspaper is supposed to really be doing. Take the item about the schools spaghetti dinner. I didnt know how much t was a fundraiser to help send students on a florida trip to study marine life. The paper did you a big favor. Yeah. So much more than just a community event. They got the word out and thats pretty good because then people can like help us. On your way to being a marine biologist. After the paper was printed the delivery man, that would be dean combs, of course, takes them to the post office. This is to colorado springs. This is going to another batch heads for the Fourth Street diner. How are you guys . So folks can catch up on what is around here breaking news. Like a story on marys 90th birthday calling her full of spunk and short in stature, mary is long on pluck are you long on pluck . You have to be to live this long. The paper has been keeping town up to date since it was started at 1879 when sugatch was a place for prospectors to buy supplies. An article about the Supreme Court hearing. These days the editor, yes, thats also dean combs, doesnt go hunting for news. He prints what people bring in. As long as all the news is good news. Excellent. You print sad news, obituaries and things like that, what about bad news . Dont really do bad news. The crescent is known when my mom is the good newspaper. Everybody will know about the bad things. You captain have anything bad that people wont find out about. Dean has no children, keeping an eye out for someone willing to edit, print, set type, repair machinery, make deliveries and then be the janitor who sweeps the floor to keep the crescent going for the next generation. Who takes over after you . You got to be committed to it. Its got to be a life, its got to be your life. I always say when im asked that question, i dont know anybody i dislike enough to give the crescent to. I like that. Osgood coming up, shoe designer steve madden. Osgood later, Fran Drescher on broadway. ,,, guy 2 i told you you could build your own skillet. Guy 1 im glad i got it while its still around. With 30 ingredients to choose from, you cant go wrong. Waitress hey, welcome to dennys. Osgood the wolf of wall street swept up very good name footwear business hes been doing a lot of sole searching ever since. This is the hardest job i ever had. The footwear mogul whose shoes are sold in nearly 60 countries. Where are you from . Venezuela. Enjoys every part of the business including weekly visits to his own new york stores. This is great. Theyre comfortable and very stylish. And the price is really good. From boots to sandals to stilettos. Madden designs any of his top selling shoes at his factory in the new york city burrough of queens. Not far from where he guy up. How does it feel to come back to your hometown being the success that you are. Its a nice feeling. People are much nicer to me than when i was growing up thats for sure. You worked here whenever a teenager. When you walk in, however many years later, decades, you see all of the display of your own shoes are you used to that already . Im not used to that. It feels great. What is it about shoes that grabs you . I suppose the marriage of art and commerce is interesting. Did you get any heat for being a guy who is interested in shoes is, lady shoes . Absolutely. Most of my friends would get on the train and go in to the city. I would go to town that i lived in work in the shoe store with a shoehorn sticking out of my pocket. They laughed at me. It seemed like my prospects were dim. So in 1975 madden enrolled at the university of miami. What did you major in in college . I didnt last long. Why did you drop out . My father wouldnt pay any more. He called me up said, get a job. Youre not saying that seriously. Where did you end up . Working in a shoe store. This only 1100 in the bank he started selling a clog, the maryland. The shoe was an in ant hit. Within three years madden opened his first store in new yorks trendy soho. Local legendary. While making it big madden came often to this small coffee shop . If we were sitting here in the 70s what are couple things you would tell him . Yes. I would tell him to be patient, dont take shortcuts. And i would mostly dont take shortcuts. Madden learned this the hard way. In 1992 he went in to business with jordan bellfort the crooked character that is in the wolf of wall street. At the tender age of 22 i headed to the only place with ambition. It took maddens Company Public artificially inflate its stock price. He said, youve got this great business, we can raise money for you. Didnt really believe him. He said, no, were like dream makers. I never had any money. My business was like my bankroll in my pocket. It happened. They did raise money for me. More than i ever dreamed of. Did you know that anything you were involved with was wrong . In the beginning, no. While we were doing it it sort of did not feel right. That i was doing the wrong thing and it was just taking a short cut, greed and stupidity. Did you feel like you were doing it for the sake of your company . No. Just greed. On my part. Just pure and simple. We were lying to ourselves that we werent doing anything wrong. A lot of people got hurt as a result of what we did. I deeply regret it. I did pay the price. It was pretty harsh, the price, too. The price was 31 months in prison, sentence he started serving in 2002 which may have been the best thing that ever happened to him. While locked up madden grew close to one of his employee, wendy. It was like an Old Fashioned courtship. We held hands, we were just able to kiss hello and goodbye. We talked and we wrote love letters back and forth. Romance started when i was in prison. I looked forward to her visits because its such a heartbreaking thing to be in prison. She made it better. I knew he loved me after i got his letter after our first kiss, which was in prison. A couple of thoughts on what transpired in the visiting room, a, it was the most fun ive had in two years. B, your heart was pounding more than mine. They married after his release now have three children. Was it a concern of yours when you came out of prison could my customers forgive me . They just wanted great shoes. But i was hoping that i could contribute and not lose my parents, also, you are changed. You want to give back. Maybe theres a greater purpose for everything. At age 56, steve madden has come a very long way. Whether being a busy dad, a famous designer. Look at you rockin those boots. Or handson businessman. Madden is kicking up his heels. Would you have done anything differently considering the way your life turned out . I wish that i had never been so foolish to break the law. That i would have never married my wife if i hadnt gone to prison or add my children. So everybodys got their own path. I love what i do, ive been given a second chance. Am going to make the most of it. Osgood next, at long last. May you never be stuck behind a stinky truck. [ beeping ] may things always go your way. But its good to be prepared. This was my this is where i grew up. This was my little town. Much of the Old Neighborhood is unchanged. Including her favorite restaurant where she described the happiest childhood imaginable. I would lie in my twin bed and listen to the laughter coming from the other side of the wall, my mom would be giggling, my dad would be laughing. And the two of them just were delightfully, vowfully happy with each other. This is my house. This is where we grew up. Where was your the top floor. My bedroom faced the back. As young girl Fran Drescher dreamed of Beauty School and staying close to home. I walked to college, thats how codependent i was. I never wanted to leave. Is that true . You never wanted to leave . But life beyond queens beckoned with the encouragement of her High School Sweetheart and future husband, Peter Mark Jacobson she started going out on acting auditions. In 1978, saturday night fever. Okay, it was a bit part but a start, dreschers beauty queen looks and grating voice made her a natural for character work. Like in 1984 spinal tap at tough talking music promoter. You dont find that offensive . Sectionist . Get out of the 60s we dont have this men at any more. The movie part got drescher noticed. Why do you suddenly want to have a baby . The nanny gave her a household name. Ive been thinking about this. But the grind of making a hit tv show was nothing compared to what she went through off screen. In 1985 she nearly survived Home Invasion robbery during which she was raped. She forced herself to look at her assailant so she could identify him later. Hes still in prison today. And shortly after the nanny was cancelled drescher was diagnosed with uterine cancer. The treatment left deep scars inside owned out. I remember going in the bathroom looking at my body seeing how swollen and black and blue it was. That cruel red line going across my pubic bone. I thought, ill never be the nanny ill never be that woman again. Life as i knew it was over. But drescher went on to make a full recovery. Very full recovery. They had hysterectomy it doesnt work any more, and it works great. A lot for sunday morning. Sorry. She laughs now but her cancer came at especially tough time after ending her 21year marriage to her husband and producing partner. How hard was it to make that final break. Youre the one who did it. Youre the one who said its over. Like walking through fire. Because i had never done anything at the expense of someone else. He didnt want it. He made it tough for me. Not long afterward Peter Mark Jacobson said he discovered he was gay. What are you saying to me . Fran, im gay. We just had sex during leno how gay can you be . Once again, Fran Dreschers real life became a tv series. This time about a woman whose husband comes out of the closet. How do you know this isnt a mid life crisis. Youve never even been with a man, just think, its not that great. But for all the bumps in her life, public and private drescher has never been one for self pity. You know everything has led me to this moment. How is this moment . Fantastic. Cinderella, lazy step daughter, help me with my package. Careful, careful nobody knows the torture that i am subjected to. Talk about fairy tale ending. These days crecher is making her broadway debut in cinderella. We must move on to gabriella its looking like a the second largest house on broadway. 1700 seats. Thats where you decided to make your debut. I was nervous. Any know what it would be like. But every time i walk out they make it known that theyre happy to see me. Most amusing name, the girl sits by the cinders much the fire and her name is ella so i called her cinderella. Why dont i have any friends . As the wicked stepmother dreschers wardrobe is spectacular. But also back breakingly heavy. You have to carry yourself with a kind of gait that makes you sit and be uncomfortable. They have physical therapists here twice a week. Are you implying what im implying . Watching her on stage easy to forget that this is her first time on broadway. After all Fran Drescher is used to holding her head high and letting her voice, that voice, ring out. When you were little did you have the voice you have now . I think so. Thank god, thank you, lord, i never had trouble getting boys. But you know are you going to the movie with betty, veer ron key and me . Osgood a personal appeal about the personal pronoun. [ coughs ] [ male announcer ] so he cant let a cold keep him up tonight.
