Imagine your own reallife experiences from the age of seven made into a series of documentaries. There is a group of people in britain who have been watching their lives unfold on the screen for half a century. The latest installment is scheduled to run on pbs next month. Their personal tales are our sunday morning cover story reported now by lee cowan. If i say that i love you and you know its true they look like any other group of kids in the early 1960s, but this wasnt just a dance party. What do they think about each other, and how will they act together . It was a sociological experiment for a british documentary called seven up. The idea was to gather seven year olds from widely different backgrounds and look at britains class system through their eyes. At one end of the extreme, upperclass seven year olds, like this trio attending a boarding school. I read the financial times. I read the observer and the times. What do you like about it . I usually look at the headlines and then read about them. This dormitory is in a childrens home, supported by charity. At the other end of the spectrum, sef year olds who were less privileged, like these growing up in a group home. What do you think about rich people . Not much. After it first aired back in 1964, the boys and girl, 14 of them in all, became minicelebrities, their wit and charm infectious. What do you think about girlfriends at your age . I got one, but i dont think much of her. The man who plucked them from obscurity all those years ago is michael apton whowrk back then was just a 22yearold researcher on the project. It was very funny, the original one, but it was also alarming. You could see that peoples views of the world were totally determined by where they were coming from and those who had somewhat impoverished backgrounds had a very narrow view of the world and those who were empowered had this grand view, not just of the world but of their lives. My Hearts Desire is to see my daddy. I like the see my father occasionally. He was so struck by what they said. I got married because i wanted to have a child. That he vowed to track the same group down every seven years ever since. They are now 56. The latest installment, 56 up, is a continuation of the series the late critic roger ebert called one of the best films of all time. What is it that makes this so compelling . Well, because i think people identify with it. I think you see 13, 14 stories up there, and theres evidence in some of them that, you know, hit home on every life. Everybody who watches it can identify with something. I may want to go to university, but i dont know which one yet. Susie is one of his favorites. When she was seven, the series pride into her thoughts on boys. Tell me, do you have any boyfriends, susie . Um, yes. And over the years, they kept asking. Watch. Have you got any boyfriend, susie . What is your attitude towards marriage . Well, i dont know. I havent given it a lot of thought. When i last saw you at 21, you were nervous, you were chain smoking, you were uptight. Now you seem happy. What happened to you over these last seven years . I suppose rupert. Shes still married to rupert with two grown sons and a daughter. I mean, there are great moments in the film, arent there, when you cut from one generation to another and its night and day. During the seven years between the films, there were other movie, blockbuster movies. Welcome misit loretta lynn. Im about as old fenway oldfs i can be he directed sissy spacek in her Academy Awardwinning performance in coal miners daughter. He directed gorillas in the mist, too, nominated for five oscars. He even did a james bond film. As a young man, paul spent many years in the building trade. But its these relatively smallbudget, retrospective, that he considers his lifes work. From this liverpool suburb we chose neil. And tough work it is. Not all those little lives went the way youd think or hoped. Take neil, for example. When i grow up, i want to be an astronaut, because i cant be an astronaut, i think ill be a coach driver. By the time neil was 14, he was planning for college, but by 21 he had dropped out and was working on a construction site. When aptid found him at 28, neil was homeless, wandering the english countryside. I simply have to find the warmest shed i can find. Aptid was sympathetic, but he pressed ahead with sometimes piercing questions. Do you worry about your sanity . Other people sometimes worry about it. How tough is that . Its very tough. Sometimes ive asked questions and ive watched the film with an audience, and the audience gasp, and i think, oh, my god, sometimes i think i may have gone too far. In the end, though, neil found his footing. By 42 he ran and was elected to his towns council. Welcome to our service today. By 56 hed even become a lay minister in his church. But having his life stumbles exposed hasnt been easy, for him or any of the up series participants. Do you have a girlfriend . I dont want to answer that. I dont want to answer those kind of questions. From the start, nick was a bit reluctant. By 14 he didnt even look at the camera. By 21 he questioned aptid on camera about the series as a whole. The limitations of such things as what the audience require and the time dont allow it to be a real study. A out. Over the years weve watched him move from his rural farm in the u. K. Here to the u. S. So the area that im looking at is this times this, becoming a professor at the university of wisconsin. He got married, had a son, got divorced and got married again. Oh, man. And aptids sometimes uncomfortable questions never stop. Absolutely. Hes not deliberately setting out to be mean to us, but making good tv is absolutely his top priority. Have you told michael how painful it is . Oh, he knows. Thank you very much. Thank you. But he says the pain is worth it. Do you regret doing it . No, no i dont, no. Its interesting. You know, it would be pathetic to opt out of it. Even if its painful, its interesting and its important. Not all of them dislike the process. Little tony walker seemed to relish it. [inaudible] he was a roughneck kid from londons east end who did, indeed but a jockey. I once met cojack. I picked him up. But by 28 he traded his horse for a london cab, and thats where we found him. Im very lucky to have that documentation of my life. Not that hes had an edie go of it. At 42 he admittedded in the series to having an affair. I have had regretful behavior at various times. My wife wasnt very happy in the fact that, you know, it came out, and i was wrong, but my wife and i are now real strong as ever. The idea of looking at a bunch of people over time and how they evolve, that was a really nifty idea. Aptid said hell keep the series going as long as everyone is willing and healthy. The thought of anyone dying, he says, is too much to bear. People say, how will i deal with it. I just dont know. I dont know how ill deal with it until i have. To hopefully i wont have to deal with it. Hopefully ill go first. Im only a cabbie. Im not exactly a movie star. His goal to, keep it going until his film family is in his 08s. Aptid by then will be 100. Ill be 99 when theyre 84, so that should be a good swan song. Next, the last licks of summer. It appears its an agent of good. September 22, 1903, 110 years ago today, the perfect day for getting in summers last licks. Wow. That was the day this new yorker filed a Patent Application for what he called a moding apparatus for forming ice cream cups, shallow forerunners of the modern ice cream cone. Other accounts credit the ice cream vendor at the worlds fair with inventing the cone, but marccione laid claim to the first patent. By 1944 americans were eating 245 million ice cream cones a year. Nowadays its well over a billion cones per year, and you never know who youll find eating one. Mitt romney was immortalized enjoying one last summer, one in a long line of political campaigns caught in the act. And its not just humans. From chimps to kangaroos to everything in between, photographers love capturing animals munching on cones. And, yes, in case you were wondering, there are youtube videos of cats eating ice cream cone, as well. Today marks the end of what dairy industry statistics say is the top ice creameating season. Still, theres no law that says you cant break that mold and enjoy a cone any time you want, all year long. Coming up, croquet anyone . [ all ] fort benning, georgia in 1999. From his home base in hawaii, he has become an ambassador of sorts for this instrument, and no question it needed a little help. Remember tiny tim . The isket, the asket, a green and yellow basket. Historically speaking, why has the ukulele got so little respect . Its small, so its always been easy to pick on, and its always been marketed as the instrument anybody can play. You dont have to have any knowledge of music. At the university of hawaii, we met jim tranquata, a ukulele historian. Yes, there is such a thing. His great, great grandfather made some of the first ukus here in this last state to join the union. We think of the ukulele as distinctly hawaiian. In fact, its not. No, im still surprised that so many people are surprised that it is originally a portuguese instrument from a tiny Little Island of me deer a, which is off the coast of morocco. They were brought to these shores by portuguese immigrants in 1879. At the time the hawaiian gazette referred to them as strange instruments, a cross between a guitar and a banjo. But hawaiians quickly adopted what was originally called a machett and began crafting the ukulele out of a native wood called koa. That tradition is carried on, where a fourgeneration Family Business still makes the ukulele from that now trademark koa wood. If youre going to pick up one of our ukuleles, youre picking up one of the best. Casey does the custom detail work. This factory once employed a number of deaf people because folks here believed the secret to perfecting these instruments was in how the wood vibrated. It was a concept taught by caseys father. You couldnt hear anything anyway because the machines were so loud, so what they did is he taught them how the feel the wood. So when he found one that was the right pitch or right sound, he gave it to them and said, this is what i want. Today their ukus are priced from around 800 to more than 5,000 for custom ones, like those designed by jake. In hawaiian, the words uku and lala mean flea jumping. Its no mystery why the name stuck. Your fingers jump from string to string. Tiny bubbles but not everyone, take for instance the slowestever rendition of tiny bubbles. They assured me i could learn to play in just a few minutes. Fingers down. Here we go. When people see it or they see other people playing it, they immediately think, oh, that looks like fun. Oh, i can do that. Oh, let me try. The instrument seems even more fun in a place like hawaii, where the ukulele provides the perfect soundtrack to paradise. Ahead, one wonder. So you want to drive more safely . Of smart. Stop eating. We are farmers bum pa dum, bum bum bum bum it happened this past week, the new york premier of the monotone silence symphony. Conceived by the late french artist eve klein, the symphony requires 70 musicians and singers who take turns holding a single sound for 20 minutes fol led by another 20 minutes of dead silence. The piece was performed just one in kleins own lifetime in paris in 1960. Accompanied by three nude models smearing themselves with kleins signature blue paint. We welcome you tonight. New york art gallery owner Dominique Levie was the moving force behind this last weeks performance. I thought it was the craziest and most unreasonable thing to ever do. How can you expect people to even bear 20 minutes of one note. And then i was lucky enough to experience it approximately i think ten years ago. And it was a lifechanging specious. Experience. Life changing enough that she organized a concert to go with an exhibition of kleins paintings and sculptures, most of them blue. So if you think about it, its one single tone, and he works in monochromatic color, one single color. So wednesday nights performance at a manhattan church, minus the distractions of three nude models in blue. Together the voices and instruments had a mesmerizing effect, were told. A New York Times blogger wrote afterwards that he imagined hed heard bagpipes at one point. Then after 20 minutes. I think thats what he wanted to achieve, a moment where you would be sort of forced to be within yourself without any digs traction by your own dream and imagination and experience something that we dont often have the luxury to experience. You guys went through some rough spots, though, didnt you . Oh, yeah. Yeah. Teenagers. Were tough women. She used to drive my car down sunset boulevard. Oh, mom. But i was cool on the big things. Yes, mom, you were great. She was great on the big things, and there were a few big things. Like moving out when she was 16 and later moving in with sonny bono, who was 11 years older. But it was on the sonny and cher comedy hour in the 1970s that the iconic cher was born. When you look great, you sing great. You Better Change your clothes. Your suit sounds terrible. Sonny was the nice guy. I was the bitch that sang well and looked great in clothes. There were people who just tuned in, women to, see what i was wearing. Then it started to be a big deal for me because it was a big deal for people. And so it gets interwoven in you. There would be no madonna or lady gaga or katy perry without cher. In a lot of ways, you paved the way for all these people. Yeah, thats true, absolutely. Lady gaga. At the mtv Video Music Awards in 2010, it was cher who gave the award to gaga, who wore a dress made of meat that night. I never thought id be asking cher to hold my meat purse. Looking at the dress, i thought, my god, this dress is made sobutedfully. Is that something you would have ever worn . I dont think so. My taste doesnt go there. Did you watch this years mtv Video Music Awards by any chance . No. Youre a good girl yes you are i saw what youre trying to get me to talk about. Im just wondering. Youre a person willing to do outrageous things. What did you think of that . I didnt like it. If she came out naked and it was beautifully done, i would have said,o go girl. I dont like to see things done badly. Badly how . Dancing terrible, outfit terrible, singing average, performance terrible. Youve tried to be provocative. But i ails just do what i want. What was the bad thing . What was the. You tell me, what was the part that was hard to take . It was never hard to take for me, but obviously for some people it was. I never had anything on that you couldnt see on a beach. One of her most notorious outfits she wore to the oscars in 1986. Cher had been snubbed for a nomination for mask that year and she was determined to make a statement. The night i gave don ameche the best supporting actor and i was in that jay gann tick big mohawk and black indian thing, but if you saw it, it was beautiful. I was going out with josh at the time, and josh was like totally freeshed out when i walked out of the bathroom in this. You mentioned joshful he said at one point, i think the reason she wears those gowns is to protect who she is, to distract people. I dont know. Josh said that . Very smart. Is he right. Nah, because clothes do do anything. Clothes are nothing. Clothes are pretty. Clothes are. Theyre nothing. She ultimately won an oscar in 1988 for moon struck, but the only starring role shes had in the past decade was in the 2010 film burlesque. This is far from over you havent seen the last of me and cher says her looks havent helped her. This guy said this thing, and i found it really interesting, he said, what do you do with cher, shes too old to be young and shes too young to be old. I cant go the other way, so ill wait until im old enough to be old. Would you make more movies if you got offers . Yeah. In our twohour conversation in her sprawling malibu home overlooking the pacific, only one subject was off limits with cher. Hows your love life . None of your business. Thats how it is. But she was open about her son chazs highly publicized sex change. I was so afraid of losing. Your daughter. Someone. Yes. But chaz is the same person. I was just thinking, well, wheres that child going to go . Whats going to happen . How is this going to work . And, you know, in the transition part, its difficult. You had a little trouble with the pronoun in the beginning. I still do. All the time. Its just ridiculous. But, no, hes definitely a man. So whats next for the who has already left her prints enshrined in cement at the chinese theater. What did you think when they asked you if you wanted to do this . I almost fainted. Come on. Yeah, pretty big deal. Yeah. She was approached recently about singing at the Winter Olympics in russia. We love you you turned it down. You cant cross that line . Which line. Gay line. Russia just past strict gay lines. My gay following has kept me in the old days alive, when no one else came to see me, ive had really bad times. Theyve always been there. Always. Strong enough to live without you Strong Enough but shell be back out on the road next year, when shell turn 68. If i dont try now, and i wait, i wont be able to. I wont be able to tour after this. Youve had so many chapters. I know. In your life. Isnt she over . Isnt it time to close the book on her . If i could turn back time not cher. If i could find a way. Not yet. Id take back all the worlds that all hurt you and youd stay ahead. At this moment, there are only two authors who are most remarkable. Rudyard kipling is one, and i am the other one. Is that val kilmer or mark twain . [laughing] why . Please . female announcer the Kitchen Table is where news is shared, plans are made and decisions are decided. When it comes time to discuss insurance, wed like to be there for you. [laughing] announcer physicians mutual. Insurance for all of us. The economy needs manufacturing. Machines, tools, people making stuff. Companies have to invest in making things. Infrastructure, construction, production. We need it now more than ever. Chevrons putting more than 8 billion dollars back in the u. S. Economy this year. In pipes, cement, steel, jobs, energy. We need to get the wheels turning. Im proud of that. Making real things. For real. That make a real difference. Mark twain made his mark on American Literature with his tail of tom sawyers trickery in getting other boys to paint his aunts fence. More than a century later, some twain admirers are making their mark by making believe the fabled author never left us. Please forgive me if youre having trouble hearing me in the back. Im dead. [laughter] mark twain was pronounced dead in 1910, but this man who famously said reports of my death are greatly exaggerated wasnt entirely wrong. I got a bone to pick with einstein. He stole my look. [laughter] twains words remain engrained in our public discourse. His observations about the human condition as relevant today as when he wrote them. I say, politics is just show business for ugly folk. [laughter] sunday morning was granted an exclusive interview with the author of such Literary Classics as the adventures of huckleberry finn, twains interview since his death. Good to meet you. I never thought id get chance to interview mark twain. Thank you. Youve been for over 100 years. Are you surprised that people remember you so well . No, i enjoy compliments, but im also embarrassed to say what i think to a person when i get a compliment. I so often feel they have not gone far enough. Theyve probably gone far enough now in his hometown of hannibal, missouri. Twainiacs come to see the childhood home of mark twain and a replica of tom sawyers famed picket fence. After more than an hour, that crowd of young ladies and gentlemen. Jim rodell performs as mark twain. There are probably as many mark twain impersonators as there are elvis impersonators. Richard gary has been portraying mark twain for 40 years. Hes dealing with eye problems in huckleberry finn. In one sense, he would update it if he was writing today, but he could write about the same subject material, because in huck l bury finn, you have substance abuse, you have child abuse, you have racism. Hannibal is also the birthplace of mark twains disdain for authority, which began when a teacher asked. Are there any idiots in the room, and if there are to please stand up. Well, she was staring right at me, so after quite a long silence, i stood up. Oh, young sammy clements, why do you think you are an idiot. I said, actually, maam, i dont. I just hate to see you standing up there all by yourself. [laughter] this mark twain is film actor val kilmer. Youre everyones problem. Yes, that val kilmer. Gentle rain and that. That signal is not a beeter. And even that val kilmer. The difference between praying in the casino and praying in the church, dont you . Well, in the casino they really mean it. Kilmer has worked for ten years writing, directing and acting in citizen twain and plans to take his oneman play to broadway and the movies. In many ways hes americas first great standup comedian. He just went on stage and talked like he talked, and if he was smoking a cigar, which was 24 hours a day, he just went on stage with a cigar. If he was drinking, he went on stage with his whisky, and no one ever did that before. If you lived today, do you think hed have a Television Show or what do you think . I could see a twohander with me and oprah. It would definitely have to be on cable. We have something new, which i dont know if you heard about it, its political correctness. Well, thats an oxymoron. Theres nothing correct in politics. Twain spoke his mind on all those things youre not supposed to bring up on the dinner table, such as religion. If christ were alive today, there is one thing he would not be, that is christian. Opposition to our government. You should always support your country, always, 100 , but your government only when its worthy of it. You know, they are two different things, and they tend to get confused about that. And race. The success of tom sawyer where theres racial issues introduced but in huckleberry finn, his masterpiece, he takes it head on. Twains repertoire extends from such significant satire to snappy oneliners like the one he laid on this los angeles audience. They say living in california adds ten years to your life. Isnt that wonderful . I think ill spend them in new york. After 103 years of purported death, mark twain still speaks to us in a most lively fashion. I was born modest, but it wore off. [ woman ] ive had it with my moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The frustration. Covering up. So i talked with my doctor. He prescribed enbrel. Enbrel is clinically proven to provide clearer skin. Many people saw 75 clearance in 3 months. And enbrel helped keep skin clearer at 6 months. [ male announcer ] enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. Serious, sometimes fatal, events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, nervous system and blood disorders, and allergic reactions have occurred. Before starting enbrel, your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and discuss whether youve been to a region where certain fungal infections are common. You should not start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. Tell your doctor if youre prone to infections, have cuts or sores, have had hepatitis b, have been treated for heart failure, or if you have symptoms such as persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, or paleness. And on saturday, secretary of state john kerry and Russian Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov hold a second round of talks aimed at ending syrias civil war. The Political Drama thats likely to continue all this week and into next month has caught the full attention. Now for a few words about the latest budget crisis gripping washington and thereby gripping us all. To simplify it a bit too much the democrats under our president , mr. Obama, want to raise the debt ceiling, maybe possibly raise taxes, and keep spending and thereby enact obamacare. Now, no one seems to know exactly what obamacare is, but anyway, thats the democrats wish. The g. O. P. Wants to make sure the government keeps cutting spending, some of it under the socalled sequestration which cuts military spending automatically. Some republicans are so opposed to obamacare that theyre willing to let the government close down rather than let obamacare go into effect. Naturally the parties differ. Thats why theyre in different parties and we should not be surprised by that. And if the g. O. P. Controlled house of representatives wants to send a bill to the Senate Cutting off obamacare, that is its right. If the democratsically controlled senate sees it differently, thats its right. There are procedures for resolving these differences. Theyre called conference committees, and they would work perfectly well if everyone had a good attitude, but not everyone has a good attitude. This problem is this idea of letting government close down. Thats just plain nutty. It might be fun for children to threaten it, but it are not be fun to drastically cut defense, law enforcement, medical care for the poor and the elderly. To shut that down seems to me a flight from adult responsibility that is just not morally defensible. Let people on capitol hill yell at each other. Let them call each other names. But to even think of closing down the government is wildly dangerous. Yes, as a republican for a long time now, im upset at the growth of federal Government Spending under mr. Obama, but at the end of the day, were all americans. We dont just pick up our toys and go home if we disagree. Its wonderful to take a stand, but sometimes the patriotic thing to do is compromise today, gear up to win elections tomorrow and work like adults for america every day. Stay cool, republicans. Our day will come. But lets not have it be doomsday. Contributor ben stein. Now we go to been schieffer in washington for a look at whats ahead on face the nation. Good morning, bob.
