Smith was admired by fellow athletes and beloved by fans for bringing a super bowl championship to new orleans. This morning, police are calling his death a case of road rage. A black and yellow tribute now marks the spot where former new orleans state defensive end will smith lost his life. No matter what the situation is, no one should ever pull a gun on somebody else. Reporter smith and his wife raquel was on their way home saturday night when Authorities Say his mercedes suv was rearended by a hummer. Police say after a verbal altercation, the hummer driver Cardell Hayes pulled a gun and shot smith to death. His wife was shot in the leg. While this is an isolated incident, it is certainly tragic at every level and on all sides. Reporter hayes attorney maintains the situation started when his clients car was hit first. My client pursued that vehicle in order to get the license plate number and in order to report an accident. Reporter before the shooting, smith had saints with former new Orleans Saints player pierre smith and an officer servolo who is one of the officers in a lawsuit against the city over the shooting of his father in 2005.
