A gifted writer who reported from the most dangerous places on earth. Simon was killed last night in a car accident here in new york city. He was a passenger in a cab that hit another car that had stopped at a traffic light. Cbs news anchor scott pelley announced simons death in a special report. His body of work earned bob too many journalistic medals to count here tonight. His daughter tania is a producer and tonight our thoughts are with tania and bobs family and his many, many friends. During his 47 years here at cbs news, simon reported on everything from domestic riots to movies, but it was as a Foreign Correspondent that simon made his name. Kris van cleave reports on simons remarkable career. Im bob simon. General, call me a fool. No, i wont. Reporter bob simon was a legendary news man, a gifted story teller a fullbright scholar, and onetime Foreign Service offer with that distinct powerful voice of truth. Soldiers and teenagers were playing catch with tear gas grenades. But he looked so dashing. He was the epitome of a Foreign Correspondent. He was brave. He would go places where you probably shouldnt have gone. Reporter simon came to cbs news in 1967. Four years later he moved to saigon to cover the vietnam war. He was on one of the last helicopters to leave saigon in 1975 as it fell. He built a career in war zones around the world. The falklands, yugoslavia, sew mala and nearly every conflict in between covering the area for nearly a decade. Tel a viv was created by sadness, sadness beyond works. Reporter he went where the news was, risking his life along the way. We saw a jeep in the distance, and it was an iraqi army jeep, and they took us away. Reporter during the opening days of the first gulf war in 1991 simon and three members were taken prisoner by the Iraqi Military and held as p. O. W. S in iraqi prisons for 40 days. Has this changed you . Yeah. How . I dont know. Too early to tell. Reporter simon joined 60 minutes in 1996. This was his 19th season on the broadcast, reporting last week on the movie selma. He won 27 emmy awards including this one about a south america orchestra whose poor members constructed their instruments out of trash. Just look and listen. Reporter this is the recycled orchestra. Reporter 60 minutes executive producer jeff fager praised his friend. He loved what he did. A body of work that i think is difficult to match. Reporter bob simon was 73. On twitter cnns Candy Crowley called simon a courageous nononsense reporter with a touch of a poet. Larry king recalled simon as a great reporter and a wonderful man. Shortly after learning of his death, cnn host and 60 minutes contributor Anderson Cooper called simon a warrior poet. Bob was for the last five decades one of the best in my opinion the best in the world in getting a story, telling a story, writing a story, and making it simply unforgettable. And cbs evening news anchor and simons 60 minutes colleague scott pelley tweeted one of the great writers of a generation has passed. Bob simon was a journalist of extraordinary courage. This morning reaction by congress to president obamas request for authorization to use military force against islamic militants can be described as bipartisan skepticism. The president laid out his case to congress yesterday for allowing the u. S. To become more involved militarily in the fight against isis including the use of ground troops. Here on capitol hill that plan is coming under fire both from lawmakers who believe the u. S. Needs to do more and those who believe the heavy lifting in this war, the ground battle should not involve the u. S. Make no mistake. This is a difficult mission. Its now up to congress to debate and pass president obamas proposal to use military action against Islamic State militants. Lawmakers will soon hold hearings where the white house is expected to lay out its strategy, and Still Congress could try to change the resolution. As a nation we need to ask the difficult and necessary questions about when, why, and how we use military force. The president s plan opens the door to using american ground troops. It rules out socalled enduring operations, military action for three years, beyond which another three years would be neated. But lawmakers on both sides are concerned and say they want more details before theyll authorize support. We provide it. We cant police a region that wont police itself. Some republicans say the plan doesnt go far enough. The president s point is that he wanted to dismantle and destroy isis. I havent seen a strategy yet that i think will accomplish that. Stressing the threat from isis extends to the u. S. Homeland the president referred to the deaths of four american hostages, most recently 26yearold aid worker kayla mueller. The draft charges isis with the murders and ground force infusion operations. Now, along with rescue operations the president said this resolution also allows him to use special forces to take military action against isis leaders. Lauren . Susan mcginnis in washington. The house passed the measure yesterday, endorsing a bill already passed by the senate. The president has threatened to veto the measure.
