Indonesian authorities tell the Associated Press those bodies did not have life jackets on. Other items recovered luggage and a possible emergency exit doors were just five or six miles from the planes last known location. Reporter crews searching for airasia flight 8501 are looking to recover red, white items off the borneo island. What appears to be life jackets are also seen. The items are most likely items from the plane. Indonesia authorities have reported theyve spotted victims in the water. Aircraft from several countries are taking part in the Aerial Search including australia. Australia has sent two p3 orions in an area by the island as requested by the indonesian authorities. Reporter the u. S. Is part of the efforts. U. S. S. Sampson has joined planes and ships which had been expanded to cover land. The missing plane with 162 people on board vanished after the planes captain requested to fly at a higher altitude because of bad weather. The request was denied because of heavy air traffic. In addition to weather investigators will also look at whether the plane was going too slow mechanical error and if the pilots may have reacted to an incident on board. Airasia has agreed to fly relatives of the missing over the search area. Shortly after the bodies were found, the airlines ceo tweeted, quote my heart is filled with sadness for all. The families of 8501 on behalf of airasia, my condolences to all. Words cannot express how sorry i am. Lauren. Mark albert in washington. Allen pizzey joins us on the phone with the breaking developments. Hes in the indonesian city of surabaya where flight 8501 took off on sunday. Allen, good morning. Reporter good morning, lauren. Well, its quite a scene here because many of the relatives of the victims have been staying here at the airport in a room. When the first pictures of a body floating in the water were broadcast on television. There was a monitor inside with some people going hysterical. Local journalists outside looking on were disgusted that it should had been done. Nonetheless, it was done. Some of the pictures we have seen helicopter crewmen being lowered into the body to recover a body. We understand at least three have been winched up to helicopters and an Indonesian Navy ship. A copilot of a hercules said when they first spotted bodies they thought the people were waving help and suddenly realized that these are dead bodies and not survivors. Earlier today, relatives, representing a group, about five members representing relatives were flown by Indonesian Military or plane over the spot where more or less the plane was thought to have gone down at that stage. So that they can pray over it. Not that they could see anything, but that they could at least pray. And im being told that tomorrow airasia and possibly the Indonesian Military will fly even more of them over the site. Theres also been a brief report that one search and rescue plane saw what is described as a shadow on the seafloor which may or may not be the plane. The only good news in all of this is that where the plane went down and where the debris is being found about six to ten miles away from the last contact of the plane, the scene is relatively shallow so getting down to get wreckage wont be as difficult. To find wreckage wont be as difficult as it was for the malaysian airliner that crashed into south asia and has not been found yet. Allen pizzey, thank you. Also this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly fire that sank a ferry from greece to italy. At least ten people are dead in the disaster. More than 400 passengers were rescued by boat and helicopter. Survivors described chaos and confusion on the ship during the 30hour ordeal. Searchers are scouring nearby waters for other possible victims. The passenger list was inaccurate making it difficult to know exactly how many people were on board. One of the most powerful members of congress is on the defensive for a speech he delivered more than a decade ago. Its not what Steve Scalise said thats drawing scrutiny, but his audience. Wyatt andrews reports. Reporter Steve Scalise is the House Majority w. H. I. P. , the third highest ranking republican. But in may 2002 his Office Confirms that scalise when serving in the louisiana legislature, spoke to a convention of the White Supremacist Group called euro. A group devoted to what they called white civil rights and whose president was david duke the former leader of the ku klux klan. According to a statement from his office, scalise has never been affiliated with the abhorrent group. He was speaking on slush funds that wasted millions of taxpayer dollars and his opposition to a proposed tax increase. In louisiana political circles scalise is known as a prolific speaker but the euro groups affiliation with david duke and its antijewish and antiminority issues are promoted and wellknown in 2002. Scalises office insists he had no idea he was speaking to a david duke group and would not have gone to that speech had he known. But for a Republican Party trying to reach out to minorities this year this could hurt. Wyatt andrews, cbs news, washington.
