Security officials were caught by surprise by the strength of Islamic State militants and by the weakness of iraqi forces. Thats leading some here on capitol hill here to believe his resolve in keeping u. S. Combat groups off the ground there could also end up being a misjudgment. President obama admits u. S. Intelligence underestimated the threat from isis. During the chaos of the Syrian Civil War where essentially you have huge swaths of the country completely ungoverned, they were able to take advantage of that and attract foreign fighters. In an exclusive interview with 60 minutes, the president also said the u. S. Underestimated the fight. The iraqis have to be willing to fight and fight in a nonsectarian way, shia, sunni, and kurds alongside each other among this cancer in their midst. There have been air strikes since early august. It began hitting locations in syria almost a week ago with a coalition of international partners. President obama insists he will not put american combat groups on the ground to secure the region, but House Speaker john boehner said if allies or local forces cant get the job done, the u. S. More than 100 flights are canceled already. The faa says it will have to replace the entire Communications Network at the aurora facility. 600 flights were canceled yesterday at chicagos two main airports, and as jeff pegues reports, thats affecting air travel from coast to coast. Reporter air Traffic Controllers say the damage to the control center outside chicago is unlike anything they have seen before. Critical Communications Equipment to manage planes in the skies will have to be replaced. Its not clear how long that will take. But without this facility up and running, there will continue to be significant disruptions to air travel in the region as airlines advise passengers to adjust their plans. Some airlines are reporting progress. Delta said it didnt cancel any flights in or out of chicago sunday related to fridays fire. The faa says it has been able to steadily increase air traffic and reduce delays. The agencys approach has been to shift management to other radar facilities. Now those facilities have had to call in additional help to manage planes taking off and landing in chicago. Aviation analyst josh marks says the system is less than efficient. The faa Traffic Control center is still based on technology from the 1950s. It has relative limited flexibility. Reporter air Traffic Controllers say this is the most challenging situation they have fa faced since 9 11. Theyve had to juggle jobs they normally dont do. This morning Recovery Efforts continue in the phoenix area following a recordbreaking weekend storm. Powerful thunderstorms slammed the area saturday with strong winds and heavy rain. More than an inch and a half of rain fell on phoenix, breaking a centuryold singleday record. There was extensive damage at Sky Harbor Airport where wind gusts were clocked at almost 70 miles an hour. And more protests in ferguson, missouri, overnight. The demonstrators are calling for the arrest of the police man who shot and killed Michael Brown last month. At least eight protesters were arrested according to the st. Louispost dispatch. Theyre considering whether to indict the officer darren wilson. And police are looking for a suspect in the shoots of an officer saturday night. The shooting is not believed to be related to the Michael Brown case. A Police Officer was shot by a suspect he was chasing outside a community center. The officer is recovering. And at least two people were killed when a monster truck spun out of control in the netherlands. The truck was part of a stunt show and drove across a row of six parked cars and then plowed into a group of spectators. Officials say at least 18 others were injured, six seriously. The truck driver is being questioned. Investigators still dont know why a tractortrailer plowed into a bus load of College Softball players friday night. A criminal investigation is under way though. The crash happened in davis, oklahoma, killing four members of the team from North Central texas college. Last night the College Community came together to pay vigil to the victims in the cash as Manuel Bojorquez reports. Reporter many of the students were asleep as the bus crash happened. 18yearold caylee was awake but never saw the bus coming. I blacked out. I dont remember the crash ending. Their coach was driving them back from a game in oklahoma saturday night when the semi crossed the median on interstate 35. The front of the bus was shirred off. When i heard about it, i just started crying. Reporter the truck driver, 53yearold russell staley, told investigators he was distracted by something in the cabin. But they say theres no evidence he tried to brake or make an evasive maneuver before the crash and traveled 800 feet before. In the small towns where the softball players come from, memorials are being held. Family and friends of 19yearold Meagan Richardson circled the High School Pitchers mound where she played last year.
