His brother was killed three weeks ago. He told us a gang member recently showed him his gun and told him hes next. His hope is that instead hell take these skills and find a job that others have through this organization. A job, he says, can be a ticket out of neighborhoods that havent seen this much bloodshed since the countrys 12year civil war. I worked here during the war. This is much harder. But el salvadors Child Protection Agency Director does not believe violence is driving out all those who have fled. She says most want to reunite with family in the u. S. Some people might say these are excuses that are being offered up for the fact that the government has not really done much to prevent the growth of these gangs.
