Some of the worst damage yesterday was in winston county, mississippi. Thats east of jackson. At least six people were killed there when a tornado pulverized entire neighorhoods. This man hid in a safe room with his family. Amazing how the Weather Forecast was saying its three minutes away, two minutes away. Then our ears started popping. I cant say it sounded like a train, but it was obvious the house was going away. The storm system is moving east this morning. Remain in effect for mississippi, georgia, tennessee, North Carolina and alabama. In alabama late yesterday, several twisters caused damage and left at least three dead. Chris womack of our birmingham station reports from kimberly, alabama. Reporter severe storms monday in alabama caused significant damage across the state, including taking down a 113yearold church. The Kimberly Church of god 15 miles north of birmingham, alabama lays in rubble. This is the old chapel. You can see theres a building right next to it still standing, but without a roof. Just down the street, the Kimberly Fire Department received significant damage. But, emblemmatic of the resiliency of the people of alabama, the church said they will still have a service on sunday. There were several firefighters inside when the storm struck. They were all able to get out and they are all accounted for. Theres a lot we dont know right now because a lot of the storms hit after the sun went down. Theres a lot of police and sheriffs officials blocking roads keeping people from intruding and looting so they can assess the damage and check on their loved ones on tuesday morning. This aerial pictures show the scale of damage in both towns. Nick helped rescue a little girl thrown 50 feet from her home and continued to look for others. It was a deal we had to go from one to the next to the next and try to help the one that could be helped. Reporter in vilonia, people are trying to pick up pieces despite losing their home. Recovery efforts are under way in mississippi and alabama for the second day in a row, the south was struck by a deadly string of tornadoes. At least ten people were killed and dozens of buildings were destroyed. Officials say most of the People Killed by sunday nights storms in arkansas were in their homes. At least 17 people died in sundays outbreak in three states. Rescue crews are still searching for victims. Vilonia, arkansas knows all too well the destructive power of tornadoes. It was hit twice in three years. We spoke with the people there. Reporter describe to me what you were thinking when you saw the tornado coming at you. Time to take cover. It was getting close. Reporter pastor james smith and his wife, bonita took cover in this hallway. I was just praying that god would keep us safe. Reporter their home was damaged and so was the church where smith has been pastor 22 years. Damage from the 2011 tornado was so severe, the church had to be torn down. That storm also leveled many homes. His congregation just finished rebuilding the Church Sanctuary this month. You look at this church and theres damage all around it. Some might say this is a miracle its still standing. It could be a miracle its still standing. Just a block over, theres a whole street with every house gone. Reporter this is going to test their faith. They are going to ask why us, again . The why question we cant answer. The answer isnt there. What hurts most is seeing people hurt. Part of my job is helping people work through that hurt. Sometimes you dont have the words for them.
