Well, it is the fiercest blast of winter weve seen this season, and its going to get more intense. A Winter Weather system stretching more than a thousand miles is beginning to move out into the Atlantic Ocean this morning, but it wont be completely gone until this afternoon. On tuesday it swept into the northeast, slamming some of the biggest cities in the nation. The storm is creating headaches on the roadways and runways. More than a thousand flights have been canceled for today. Philadelphia is practically on snow shutdown. Schools will be closed again today with more than a foot of snow falling on the city of brotherly love, but the citys signature cheesesteak joints managed to keep on cooking despite the wintry weather. In washington, d. C. , it will be back to work for federal employees, many of whom enjoyed a day off tuesday. There was enough snow to toss snowballs around the Nations Capital for the first time in years, and while it may have delighted some, the snowfall has others already thinking of warmer weather. But that will have to wait. Temperatures are expected to stay bitter cold for weeks to come. Marlie hall is here in new york where nearly a foot of snow is on the ground. Good morning, marlie. And all that snow yesterday made it the snowiest january 21st on record, and while the worst of the snowfall is over, the biggest concerns now are the freezing temperatures and strong winds that are making it feel even colder. More than a foot of snow fell in some areas. I couldnt see out of my windshield, and my wipers had ice, so i had to clean them up. Reporter it was a dangerous trip home for millions tuesday. If youre going to buy a subcompact car, a mini car as its called, youre going to want to choose carefully and possibly reconsider after you hear that not some but all performed in new crash tests. Mini cars are very popular, but buyers may want to think twice. The small light vehicles performed poorly in recent crash tests by the Insurance Institute for highway safety. So far its not a great look. We only have one out of 11 vehicles that didnt earn a marginal or poor vehicle. That vehicle is the chevrolet spark, their 2014 top safety pick. Which was the only model to receive an acceptable rating. Other popular models like the honda fit and fiat 500 performed the worst. The 40mileperhour crash simulates what happens when the front corner of the car hits another vehicle or a tree. The passenger compartment in many of the cars was compromised, and the steering column pushed back toward the driver, potentially leading to serious injuries. The institute says Car Companies have made significant improvements in larger car categories. The message were sending to the automakers is that wed like them to implement changes like theyve done in other segments of their product line. Every mini car rated marginal or poor for structure, the most important component for passenger and driver protection. Now, the institute points out that while the chevy spark did get that top safety pick rating, it comes in at less than 2,500 pounds and it does not protect as well as a larger heavier vehicle that got the same safety rating.
