Mess of one of the busiest travel days of the year. This is buffalo, new york, overnight. Parts of the area could see up to a foot of snow depending on where you are. This storm system combined snow, ice, drenching rain and dangerous gusting winds. At least 11 deaths are blamed on the weather since the storm began last week. And a reported tornado touched down along the North Carolina coast. There are reports of damage, trees and power lines are down, and a roof of a condominium was blown off. A local hospital suffered some damage as well and is operating on a generator. Eric fisher, chief meteorologist at our boston station, wbz, has the latest on the holiday storm. Just 24 hours ago, finally the storm will be out of our hair. Its the same one that brought all that flooding rain to california last week. And now were watching the northeast corridor. As we go through the morning, the heaviest rain new york city up through boston. Along i95, really difficult travel. Not an easy drive whatsoever. To the west, still snow falling western new york, central and northern parts of pennsylvania in particular. Slow to move out as we head through the afternoon. Still heavy downpours through eastern massachusetts. Boston logan will have difficulty with flights. Just because of the wind plus the rain that will be coming down. As we head toward the evening, finally this starts to shift offshore. It should be all gone as we head into the overnight. Just snow showers left in the mountains of northern new england. For snow totals, up to a foot possible western new york. I think especially from rochester toward buffalo, just west of the finger lakes. That should be the bullseye. There are winter storm warnings up. Treacherous travel and power outages. That streak of snow will head up into northwestern parts of have the vermont and towards pittsburgh. Not just the storm but the lake effect that kicks in afterwards. Airports to watch this day, were looking at buffalo, new york, with the snow. Boston with the rain and the wind. New york also watching the rain. And hartford, connecticut, upper 50s. Heavy downpours rolling through as we head through the course of the day. Thanksgiving itself, just cold. Winter returns. Gusty winds for the thanksgiving day parade in new york. Im meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. So if you are traveling today, have patience. Whether you are driving or flying, particularly in the ae aeft, expect delays. According to one flight tracking firm, there were 5,418 flights delayed yesterday nationwide. An Airline Industry trade group says this thanksgiving holiday will be the busiest in terms of air travel since 2007. Wendy gillette is here in new york with more. Wendy, good morning. Reporter good morning, annemarie. Unfortunately this storm is going to change where a lot of people spend thanksgiving this year because theyre not going to be able to get where they want to go. Its going to be very crowded, very slow, and its really going to require an attitude adjustment because, you know, the time you thought you might be able to make, youre not going to be able to. Reporter the storms winddriven rain is expected to slow travel from atlanta to new england. Nearly 2. 5 million passengers are expected to try and fly today. Yesterday the issue was more about delays as opposed to cancellations. We almost canceled. We actually called our family out in ft. Lauderdale, and we said were going to cancel, and they were very upset. Hopefully well get out. Were keeping our fingers crossed. Reporter Many Airlines waived fees for changing flights. And thanksgiving travelers scrambled to rebook flights to stay ahead of the storm. Both travelers and the airlines are having to deal with a messy mix of snow, drenching rain and strong winds. Yesterday wet and frozen roads were the issue from kentucky to new england. Some areas in the south got up to four inches of rain. But as miserable as today will be for many, many people, there is some good news. The storm is expected to move out, and most of the nation will have clear weather on thanksgiving. A little bit of a silver lining, right, annemarie . Well take anything we can get. Wendy gillette here in new york, thank you, wendy. The Affordable Care act is headed back to the Supreme Court. Obama care requires employers to provide Health Insurance policies that pay for Birth Control. Some 40 companies have sued, arguing that goes against their religious beliefs. The issue has divided lower courts. Tara mergener is in washington. Tara, good morning. Reporter good morning. At issue is a backlash by some christian employers opposed to the laws Birth Control mandate and whether they have religious rights. The High Court Just agreed to hear two of these cases. Hercules industries, a heating and airconditioning maker in denver, gives its employees health care. The Affordable Care act requires they also cover Birth Control. But the catholic family that owns the business does not believe they should have to. This case isnt about seeing that people shouldnt have access to those things. This case is saying that we just dont want to pay for them. Reporter now Hercules Industries and dozens of other businesses are suing the government. The Supreme Court will hear arguments from lawyers representing two of them including hobby lobby. The Christian Family that owns the business says covering Birth Control violates their religious beliefs. The Obama Administration exempted churches from the requirement but does not believe profitmaking companies should also get a pass. Its troubling to think that someone could pick and choose, not based on science, not based on health care, not based on anything else, but pick and choose which services to provide to employees. That would be a troubling picture. Reporter lower courts have been split on the issue. The nations highest court will likely hear arguments in march. And if the court rules in favor of the Obama Administration, these companies could face heavy fines if they do not comply with the law. Annemarie . Tara mergener in washington, thank you. What is described as an unseaworthy, an overloaded sailboat carrying haitian migrants ran aground and capsized in the southern bahamas. About 150 people, men and women, were on board. It appears up to 30 were killed. Gary nelson of our miami station, wfor, has the latest. Reporter a 40foot sailboat, a rickety thing, lies capsized in bahamian waters. At least 100 haitian refugees cling to the hull of the vessel, overloaded with human cargo that overturned in a stormtossed sea. U. S. Coast guard helicopters and planes went to the rescue, dropping life rafts and survival gear, but at least 30 of the group are known to have perished. This u. S. Pilot flew this plane over this scene and focused not on the misery but the mission. At 200 feet over the water at night, that was all im thinking about is the safety of my crew and trying to get whatever i could for the people in distress. Reporter such people in distress are an alltoofamiliar sight. If this is a common scene, it is an increasingly common one as desperate conditions lead more and more people to resort to desperate efforts. Only last month a tiny boat was crammed with humanity was swamped just off miami. Four haitian women died. Alleged smugglers have been charged with murder. In the case of this human suffering discovered in the bahamas monday, no determination has been made, if it was illegal smuggling or a group act of desperation. We encourage people, especially here in the united states, if youve got loved ones who are considering on getting on one of these boats that are all too often grossly overloaded with hundreds of people aboard, tell them dont do it. Reporter they are doing it increasingly. Four years after an earthquake killed a quarter million haitians and left the already dirtpoor country a crumbled mess, critics say these alltoooften tragic attempts to flee reflect a failure of the world to deliver needed aid and rebuilding. It is time that the international community, the state of haiti, and then the Obama Administration, you know, they come through with their promises. Reporter a good start to stopping this, they say, would be to process humanitarian visas that have languished in a bureaucratic pipeline. That was wfors gary nelson reporting. Now, authorities believe the migrants were at sea for more than a week with little food or water and no life jackets. China says it detected and monitored two american bombers that flew across an area of the East China Sea china now claims it controls. The airspace is over a group of islands controlled by japan but claimed by china. The u. S. Says the two b52s were on a training mission, and the u. S. Wont recognize the new air zone or chinas request that aircraft entering it identify themselves. Now, coming up on the morning news, o. J. Simpsons latest legal loss.
