We are learning more about the batch of violent storms that plowed through 12 states flattening entire neighborhoods. The series of tornadoes swept through the midwest sunday, leaving at least eight people dead. But if not for accurate Early Warnings, the toll could have been much higher. Meanwhile, thousands remain without power. In washington, illinois, as many as 500 homes were either damaged or destroyed. Bigad shaban is in washington. Bigad, good morning. Reporter annemarie, good morning to you. The kind of tornado that whipped through here only comes about every ten years according to the National Weather service. And for those who still may have homes to return to in this community, the power is still out. Officials say it could be days before electricity is restored. The recovery is under way for thousands of people who lost their homes. Curt and Bridget Williams walked out of their basement in washington, illinois, sunday, to find just about everything gone. Now, these are actually the clothes that were at least able to dig out. Reporter the town is doing all it can to help. It even set up a day care so kids can play while their parents look through rubble. Leave it to a child to best describe what happened to the homes in his neighborhood. Theyre crushed from the storm. And mommy just cried all the time. Reporter the storms killed at least eight people here in the midwest. Officials say with all of this destruction, that number could have been much higher. But accurate forecasting and Early Warning systems helped save lives. We heard the sirens go off. Reporter jack ravallo was at home with his three daughters when the emergency sirens blared. I looked around the tree line, i saw a refrigerator 300 feet in the air. Reporter he said they had just enough warning to escape to the basement. If it wasnt for early response, all these people would be done. Reporter and people here say one other thing helped. The timing. It was 11 10 a. M. On a sunday morning. A lot of folks were at church. Reporter now despite all the destruction seen here and across the midwest, this has not been a particularly active year for tornadoes. So far in the u. S. , weve seen about 880 tornadoes, but annemarie, thats about 500 less than what we usually see by this time of year. Bigad shaban in washington, illinois, thank you very much. Well, Princeton University is offering to its stupids a meningitis vaccine thats been approved in europe and australia, but not here in the united states. Since march, seven cases of meningitis have been confirmed on the princeton campus. Last week the fda approved importing the vaccine. Meningitis is rare in the u. S. But victims can die in a few days, and survivors can suffer mental disabilities. The first doses will be available next month. In other medical news, the new guidelines for cholesterollowering statin drugs are being questioned. Some doctors argue they significantly overestimate the risk for certain groups. Now in an article to be published today, two researchers argue the new guidelines suggest statin treatment for about twice as many middleaged americans may significantly benefit from them. Doctors who devised the new guidelines argue they are part of a process to help figure out who should take a statin. But dr. Steven nissen of the Cleveland Clinic said the guidelines should have been tested more thoroughly. The right thing is to pull back from these guidelines. Put this out for public comment. Let independent scientists examine the risk calculator. Because were talking about the treatment of tens of millions of americans with medications. We have to get this right to maintain the public support. Old guidelines made it easier for doctors to determine risk by relying on specific cholesterol numbers. George zimmerman is due in court today to face charges involving a domestic dispute. Its the latest legal trouble for the man acquitted in the shooting death of florida teen Trayvon Martin. Vinita nair reports. Reporter George Zimmerman is in trouble with the law again and has a new mug shot. It was taken after his girlfriend of three months Samantha Scheibe called police from her florida home. You just broke my glass table, just broke my sunglasses and you just put your gun in my freaking face. Reporter scheibe made the call with zimmerman in the room, but a few seconds later are you kidding me . He just pushed me out of my house and locked me out. Reporter with police outside, he placed his own call to 911. Shes pregnant with our child. Reporter zimmerman claimed he never pulled a gun. She just started smashing stuff, taking stuff that belonged to me. Reporter zimmerman eventually surrendered to police. Hes been charged with aggravated assault, battery Domestic Violence as well as criminal mischief. Reporter the incident happened about 15 minutes where zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin in february of 2012. He was later acquitted of murder. In september, he was arrested following a domestic dispute with his estranged wife shellie, just days after she filed for divorce, but no charges were filed. Zimmerman will appear in court on tuesday. Vinita nair, cbs news. A pennsylvania minister will learn his fate this morning. Reverend Frank Schaefer was convicted on monday of breaking Methodist Church law by officiating his sons samesex wedding. The Methodist Church accepts gay and lesbian members but it is incompatible with the christian teaching. A church jury will decide his punishment. And a sibling spat over samesex marriage has embroiled one of the most prominent families. Its about more than just politics for the daughters of former Vice President dick cheney. The government and Jpmorgan Chase are expected to announce an agreement today concerning the bank sale of low quality mortgagebacked securities. The 13 billion settlement will be the largest ever reached between the government and a corporation. The Mortgage Securities collapsed during the financial crisis. 6 billion of that settlement will be used to compensate investors. Google is paying a 17 million fine to settle a privacy case involving people who use safari web browsers in 2012. A loophole allowed google to follow safari users without their permission. The fine will be divided between 37 states and the district of columbia. While stocks continue their upward trajectory, the dow has risen for six straight weeks now and is up 22 so far this year. And without it, we have nothing. So far more than 750,000 pounds of relief supplies have been provided by the u. S. The osprey has just landed here on the u. S. S. George washington the aircraft carrier. You should think of it as a giant floating staging area. Here planes can come to refuel and resupply. Later, marines touch down on a sandbar in a river. We had about half of our helicopter left with supplies and were flying over and there are signs on the roof of that building saying we need food and water. Reporter this is the First Time Since the typhoon struck that this remote village has received any help. Talking with people in those remote villages, there was a real sense of having been abandoned. You can imagine those ospreys landing any day in those villages would create quite a stir. Never mind bringing much needed food and water.
