The United States is hoping a terror suspect captured over the weekend will provide valuable intelligence about al qaedas operation. He was taken into custody in tripoli, libya. That was one of two raids by American Special forces on saturday. The other targeting a suspected terrorist compound in somalia. Jericka duncan is here in new york with that and more. Good morning, jericka. Good morning, annemarie. The results of those raids appear to be mixed. Its unclear if the terrorist suspect targeted in somalia was involved in the fire fight with navy s. E. A. L. S but they have whats called, quote, vast value. It spent 15 years and it ended on the street here in tripoli. The man intight dieted for the 1998 bombings in tans z tanzani kenya was pulled from his car and taken from his home. Today john kerry says his capture complies with the u. S. Law. The United States of america is going to do everything in its power that is legal and appropriate in order to enforce the law and protect our security. Reporter al libi was an original member of al qaeda and had been on the fbis most wanted terrorist list since it was introduced on september 11th. He was in al qaedas early stages where their antiu. S. Agenda was being formed. His capture could be a serious blow to the al qaeda operation. Al libi was the computer expert and his computer held a 180page manual per operations. It remained clear how serious a threat al qaeda was because it laid out step by step the things an operative would have to do to pull off a terrorist attack like 9 11 or the attacks in somalia. Al shabaab is the organization that launched the bloody takeover of a mall in nairobi, kenya, last month. Officials say another man known as al ruqail was another. No other person was injured in the fire fight. As for al libi, hes going to eventually face terror charges here in new york. Jericka duncan in new york. Thank you, jericka. Well, International Experts began destroying syrias chemical weapons on sunday. The u. N. Backed team has about nine months to eliminate the stockpile. Syria is believed to have about a thousand tons of mustard gas and nerve agents. A chemical gas in august that killed hundreds of people in damascus prompted the mission. And there were new clashes in egypt overnight. On sunday more than 50 people were killed across the country in raging street battles. Supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi faced off against backers of the militaryled government. The fighting took place on a National Holiday meant to celebrate egypts military. And the Government Shutdown enters its seventh day this morning. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers remain furloughed, and the country is moving closer to an ominous deadline. On october 17th the u. S. Will reach its Borrowing Limit and the government will run out of cash to pay its bills. Lack of political process on that issue rattling wall street and main street. The two sides are further apart than ever. Susan mcginnis is in washington. Susan, good morning. Annemarie, good morning. A couple of bright spots did emerge over the weekend. Many, many workers are being called back on the job, and many others are coming closer to getting back pay, but both houses of congress are back in session today, no closer to making a deal to temporarily fund the government and reopen the government, and now the nation is moving closer to this even more severe crisis. Defense secretary chuck hagel is ordering about 300,000 department of defense employees back to work today even though the government is still shut down. Republicans and democrats are not negotiating. There may be a back room somewhere, but theres nobody in it. House Speaker John Boehner says republicans will only approve bills to reopen the government and raise the countrys debt limit if they agree to a i told the president theres no the votes are not in the house to pass a clean debt limit. Democrats argue the 218 votes needed to pass the bill in the house are there but Speaker Boehner wont bring it up for a vote. We have just about every democrat, 21 low pressures said they would. There are many more republicans said that they privately would. So Speaker Boehner, just vote. Put it on the floor and lets see if youre right. If congress cant reach a deal in the next ten days, the nation could default on its debt for the first time in american history. If lawmakers doan get it together by october 17th, its going to be a collision, an economic collision thats going wreck our economy. On october 17th, the government will run out of money to cover its bills. Six days later Social Security benefits come due, and one week after that, 6 billion in Interest Payments have to be paid. Wall street is interestingly watching the feed. Treasury secretary jack lew says defaulting on the debt could plunge the nation back into a recession worse than in 2008 and that one was the worst recession since the great depression. Now, since the weekend, the conversation here on capitol hill seems to be morphing into a larger deal being desired by many on both sides that would encompass not just changes in the Health Care Law but cuts in entitlement programs like medicare, medicaid, possibly cuts in taxes. A larger deal than weve seen both sides reach before in a pass. Seems like a lot of work to be done. Well, top cbs moneywatch defense contractors getting a lifeline during the Government Shutdown and gas prices continue to slide. Gigi stone is at the New York Stock Exchange with that and more.
