this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, may 24th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, without warning, part of an interstate bridge collapsed into a river in washington state last night. several vehicles plunged into the water, but this morning authorities say no one was killed and just three people were injured. the i-5 bridge located in a rural area about 60 miles north of seattle fell into the skaj it river. interstate 5 is the main north-south freeway on the west coast. susan mcginnis has more. a bridge collapsed on the interstate 5 about halfway between seattle and vancouver. a handful of people and their vehicles plunged into the river. >> rough day. i'm glad to be here breathing. >> he and his wife had to be rescued from the river along with another man. he said the semi trailer in front of him hit the bridge causing the collapse. >> there was a big puff of dust and i hit the brakes. the weight of the trailer and everything else, we went right off with the bridge as it collapsed into the skaj it river. >> interstate 5 is a heavily traveled highway connecting canada to seattle and the rest of the west coast. >> seattle transportation and commerce and industry and western washington, and we have already started the process tonight of designing a system and detours to accommodate the time period it will take to replace this bridge. >> with the bridge down, traffic is backed up and is being rerouted. the bridge was built in 1955 and state officials say it has passed every inspection. >> the bridge has an efficiency rate of 47 and was tested last year. >> it was considered functionally obsolete but noted it has somewhat better than minimum adequacy to tolerate being left in place as is. susan mcginnis, cbs news. well, in fact, 759 bridges in washington have a worse rating than the one that collapsed thursday. the hurricane season starts june 1st and forecasters predict an above average number of storms. they expect there will be seven to 11 hurricanes this season. a normal year produces six hurricanes. three to six of them will be major storms with winds exceeding 111 miles an hour, and if you live in a hurricane-prone area, the advice is to prepare now. >> if you live along those shorelines, this is your warning. this is your announcement. look at your family. look at your community. because that's where the question about how vulnerable am i if such a risk arrives on my doorstep. >> last year was the third busiest season on record. ten storms became hurricanes including sandy which killed 147 people even though it had lost hurricane status when it hit shore. well, president obama plans to visit sandy-ravaged jersey shore after the holiday weekend. mr. obama will tour the coast tuesday meeting with business owners and residents. on long island, the jones bridge which suffered serious damage from sandy reopened yesterday. it took several months to prepare the beach. buildings were lost. there was significant beach erosion, and entire parking lots disappeared. other beaches on long island are still being prepared. in moore, oklahoma, now, three young victims of the tornado will be buried today. a public memorial service for all 24 victims will be held sunday night and now the question for many in this storm-ravaged town is whether to rebuild or move on. bigad shaban is in moore. bigad, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. for one couple we met, answering the question was extremely painful. they were in the home when the tornado came through, and they barely made it out alive. this closet is one of the few things left standing in the haywoods' home. they huddled there when the 200-mile-an-hour tornado blew through and destroyed their house. what makes the pain so strong being back here now?
