There was little compromise during last nights onehour speech as the president pushed congress to push an issue ranging from gun control. He goes to North Carolina to further outline his proposal. Al just released cbs news poll found 52 approve of the job president obama is doing, but 54 believe the country is on the wrong track. Susan mcginnis is in washington. Good morning, susan. Hey, good morning, annemarie. Yeah, the president seemed emboldened and unyielding last night. He fleshed out lots of the themes from tin august rail address talking about how to get the middle class thriving again and talking about how to revive the economy and also unveiled some new initiative including universal preschool and voting initiativess and raising the minimum wage burke he gave the speech before a deeply divided Congress Many of whom believe when it comes to the nations problems, government is not the solution. Fellow americans president obama used the first state of the Union Address of his second term to send a message to lawmakers, get to work. The American People dont expect government to solve every problem, but they do expect us to put the nations interests before party. The hourlong speech focused mainly on domestic and Economic Issues and on the need for a divided congress to compromise. He said political brinksmanship, threats of shutdown and unilateral spending hurts the nation. Lets agree to keep the government open and pay our bills on time and always uphold the full faith and credit of it the United States of america. The president drew strong applause when he announced 34,000 troops would return from afghanistan by this time next year, half the u. S. Force there. He also got a standing ovation when he talked about gun laws. The president said bills on background checks and large magazines are being discussed and that lawmakers owe it to victims of gun violence to bring them to the floor. They deserve a vote. Gabby giffords deserves a vote. The families of newtown deserve a vote. In the republican response florida senator marco rubio said the president s economic plans would hurt the middle class. Mr. President obama, i dont oppose your plans because i want to protect the rich. I want to oppose the plan because i want to protect our neighbors. President obama will make his case to the American People with rallies later this week in georgia and illinois. Now, in an indication of how willing republicans are to compromise House Speaker john boehner said yesterday immigration is about the only item on the president s list that has a chance of passing this year. Annemarie . Susan mcginnis in washington. Thank you. Well, the president also pushed his case for quick action on Immigration Reform. Mr. Obama called for stronger Border Security and a responsible pathway to earned citizenship. We know what needs to be done. And as we speak, bipartisan groups in both chambers are working diligently to draft a bill and i applaud their efforts, so lets get this done. Send me a comprehensive immigration bill in the next few months and ill sign it right away, and america will be better for it. Lets get it done. The president s proposals like Immigration Reform face a divided congress including a house that has an agenda of its own. Nancy cordes has more. The republicans are not reacting so positively to the president s state of the Union Address as they did to his inaugural address. This time their address has been more muted and they did rise and applause a few times during his speech when he talked about Immigration Reform and some of his job creation proposals, when he talked about ending the war in afghanistan, and when he talked about improving health care for soldiers and veterans. But there are a number of things that he called for that will be very difficult to get through a republicancontrolled house, most notably gun control measures, particularly when it comes to an assault weapons ban, but also some of his immigration ideas, some of his ideas when it comes to minimum wage which he said hed like to see come to 9 an hour. Republicans are saying lets see what you can get through the democratically controlled senate fit and then well consider your proposal. Nancy cordes cbs news, capitol hill.
