for wednesday, april 11, 2012. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm michelle miller. it was an announcement that caught mitt romney by surprise. rick santorum's arupt decision to suspend his presidential campaign. now it's romney versus president obama and romney has to work on his image. a new national poll says president obama appears much more friendly and likeable than romney by a 2-1 margin. duarte geraldine in washington with more. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. polls also show obama has a distinct advantage among women voters. santorum fell short of officially endorsing romney as suspended his campaign but he's vowing to fight alongside republicans as they reclaim the white house. mitt romney campaigned in pennsylvania with a new wide open path to the presidential nomination. >> this has been quite a day for me. i kind of like today. >> reporter: his closest rival, rick santorum, suspended his campaign yesterday. >> this presidential race for us is over. >> reporter: santorum dropped out two weeks before the primary in his home state. he was losing ground in the polls there and had to cancel several campaign events last week to care for a sick daughter but romney says santorum will still have an influence in november dwloo he will, without question, remain a major spokesman in our party, leader in our party. he's earned that by virtue of his effort. >> reporter: romney has an overwhelming lead in the race for delegates but ron paul and newt gingrich say they're not ready to quit. the former speaker of house says he still has a lot of supporters. >> they deserve to be represented until romney actually gets 1144 delegates. and i think it's wrong for people to say, well, why don't you give it to him? >> reporter: romney's campaign said yesterday's shakeup doesn't change their strategy. they say it's always been to beat president obama in the general election. yesterday the president campaigned in florida, a key battleground state. he says this election will be about economic fairness. >> we've got to choose which direction we want this country to go. do we want to keep giving those tax breaks to folks like me, who don't need them? >> reporter: the president is pushing the so-called buffett rule, those who make money through investments pay higher taxes. the senate takes up that legislation next week. mitt romney will campaign in connecticut and rhode island. both states hold their primaries during the next round of contests in just two weeks. michelle? >> duarte geraldino in washington, thank you. a bomb threat forced a korean passenger jet to make an emergency landing last night. the korean airlines flight was headed to seoul from vancouver, canada, when a call center received the threat 25 minutes after takeoff. two u.s. fighter jets escorted the boeing 777 to a canadian military air base. 149 people were on board. the airline is conducting a safety inspection. secretary of state hillary clinton is warning north korea not to launch a long-range rocket later this week. north korea released video of the rocket wrapped in a green tarp. officials from the north say it's being fueled. clinton says the launch would violate a moratorium on nuclear and missile testing. >> i would just underscore that if north korea wants a peaceful, better future for their people, it should not conduct another launch that would be a direct threat to regional security. >> reporter: clinton also warned north korea may follow the launch with additional provocation. special envoy kofi annan said there's still time to salvage a cease-fire in syria that's supposed to take hold tomorrow. meantime, there are reports of fresh violence in the city of homs. it follows attacks yesterday, despite a deadline for the government to pull back troops and tanks. senator john mccain toured a syrian refugee camp in turkey. he said it's time for the u.s. to intervene. well, i think it was a failure from the start, most of us knew because there was no pressure for assad to actually stop the killing. so, we think it's going to require military action on the ground. >> mccain also said china and russia should be ashamed for blocking the u.n.'s efforts to stop the blood shed. we'll soon find out if george zimmerman, the gunman who killed trayvon martin, will be charged. the special prosecutor plans to announce her decision by friday evening, this comes as lawyers for the shooter say they've quit. randall pinkston has more. >> reporter: the neighborhood watch captain who says he shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin in self-defense has lost his legal team. >> it wouldn't be ethical for me to continue to hold myself out as his attorney when i haven't spoken to him in two days and i know his phone works and i know he's not returning my messages, not returning my texts and not returning my e-mails. he won't even give me a collect call. >> reporter: they say george zimmerman contacted a news outlet without their knowledge and also called the special prosecutor assigned to the case. >> to handle it this way suggests he may not be in complete control for what's going on. we're concerned about his emotional and physical safety. >> reporter: zimmerman created a website where he describes the shooting as a life-altering event that forced him to leave his home, job and family. he's asking for financial support. >> he says that he experienced a life-altering event. well, trayvon martin experienced a life-ending event. >> reporter: sanford officials and the martin family are asking for patience and calm. it has been six weeks since trayvon martin's death. the special prosecutor says she needs more time. angela corey says an arrest in this case will be her call and she's not going to present the case to a grand jury. martin's family says they're confident justice will be served. >> and we just truly believe after the investigation is completed, that he will be arrested. >> reporter: the two attorneys say they stand by zimmerman and will resume his defense if he finally contacts them. randall pinkston, cbs news, sanford, florida. coming up on the morning news, meet the mega millions winners. plus, can tax day be dangerous for drivers? tokyo's nikkei lost less than half a percent. hong kong's hang seng fell more than 1%. wall street's longest slump of 2012 continued tuesday with the worst day of the year. the dow fell for a fifth straight day losing 213 points. nasdaq lost nearly 2%, falling 55 points. investors got good news after the markets closed. aluminum manufacturer alocoa reported larger than expected profits in the first quarter. alocoa sells aluminum to a wide range of companies and is often considered an indicator of where the economy is headed. problems continue to pile up for best buy. ceo brian dunn abruptly resigned on tuesday after the company launched an investigation into his personal conduct. news of the investigation turned off investors. best buy's shares fell almost 6% yesterday. the electronics chain recently announced it was cutting hundreds of jobs and closing 50 of its big box stores. in a move to deter smartphone theft, major wireless companies are agreeing to a plan that will disable stolen phones. wireless providers will assign phones a unique serial number and store that information in the database. if a phone is reported stolen, it can permanently be deactivated, making it worthless to a thief. the holders of the winning tickets from maryland in last month's record-breaking mega millions jackpot have come forward but we don't know who they are. the three winners calling themselves the three amigos wish to stay anonymous and held the ceremony with checks held in front of their faces. what we know is all three are educators and they say they are staying on the job. each will get about $35 million. and you now have less than one week to complete your tax returns and send them along to uncle sam. this year april 15th falls on a sunday, so the irs extended the deadline until tuesday, the 17th. but a word of caution if you're on the roads on tuesday. researchers combed through 30 years of data and concluded the number of traffic fatalities increases on tax deadline day by 6%. now, they couldn't pin down exactly why that's happening but they speculate that drivers may be more stressed and distracted than usual. so the word, michelle, get motorcycle accident. exposed his qulent affair with a young female staffer. athletic director jeff long said his behavior harmed the university. he'll lose an $18 million buyout in his contract. petrino, married with four kids, issued an apology through his agent. in his four years at arkansas razorbacks were 34-17. some members of miami's large cuban community wanted ozzie guillen fired as manager of the marlins pore praising cuba's long-time dictator fidel castro in a magazine article. instead the team suspended guillen for five games. the usually combative guillen accepted his punishment meekly. >> i apologize to the people here. outside looking at me. i'm very, very, very sorry about the problem, about what happening. and i will do everything to make it better. >> while guillen was speaking, angry protesters were outside the marlins' new stadium in the heart of miami's little havana. now to baseball. on the field in san diego, with the game tied 2-2 in extra innings, arizona's chris young smacked a two-run homer in the top of the 11th. the d'backs held on to win 4-2 and are 4-0 to start the season. in the nba last night, boston at miami and early in the game, lebron james took a dwyane wade lob for an alley-oop dunk, but the celtics were hotter than the heat. paul pierce scoring 27 points and kevin garnett adding 24 as boston won it 115-107. when we come presidential bid. that means the race is now on between mitt romney and president obama. and the special prosecutor in the shooting death of trayvon martin will decide in the coming days whether to charge gunman george zimmerman. meantime, zimmerman's lawyers have quit. now an amazing story of survival. the parents of a baby born three months premature say they rescued their still living infant from a coffin in a morgue. it happened at a hospital in northern argentina. the mother says after she gave birth, she was sedated. she never saw her daughter so she says 12 hours later, the couple went to the morgue, pried open the tiny coffin and were shocked when the baby cried. doctors say the child is in good condition. here's a new concern for the millions of women who go to salons to are their nails done. a california state agency has found some nail salons and their nail polish labeled as safe actually contain a toxic trio of chemicals. we have more. >> reporter: cynthia has 12 employees at her nail salon in los angeles. they work up to ten-hour days, so it's crucial the nail polish they use is safe for them and their clients. >> especially if some of my customers are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. >> reporter: california department of toxic substance control found some polishes only used in nail salons are mislabeled and contain dangerous chemicals linked to by the way defects, asthma and other illnesses. known as toxic trio. investigators randomly chose 25 nail polish brands to test. they found more than 80% claiming to be free of a certain toxic chemical, actually had it. and 30% had dangerously high levels. >> no worker should have to suffer health impacts due to a manufacturer's false claims. >> reporter: a group that represents the company that make the nail polish argue the level of chemicals are actually very low and don't present a significant health risk. nicole fisher is a nail polish distributor and recommends salon owners buy titanic had its own emergency. a helicopter was called to the titanic memorial cruise to airlift a sick passenger to the hospital yesterday. the ship had to turn back briefly to the irish coast. this week marks the 100th anniversary of the titanic's doomed voyage. among the 1500 people who died when is sank, a small group from a town in ireland, who have not been forgotten, mark phillips has that story. >> reporter: everything about the titanic was big. biggest ship, biggest disaster, biggest story. but this tragedy also came in small packages. nowhere was it felt more deeply than here in the remote west of ireland parish of addergoole, so deeply it was hardly spoken of for almost 100 years. now, though, they're rehearsing for a memorial service to commemorate the exact moment the ship went down. 14 people from this tiny place sailed on the titanic, 11 of them died. willie cusack's cousin catherine who left this now ruined farm to head for america was one of them. >> it's like it was a big family, you see, because they all knew one another, you see. it wasn't just one family. it would be the whole. >> reporter: until now, the practice around here hasn't been to try to remember the titanic tragedy but to try to forget it. too painful, too many victims in too small a place. too many families' dreams died on that ship as well. the the area, one of ireland's poorest, sent its children to america, not just to a new life, but to send money back so more could follow. it buried its pain for generations, until a new doctor came to town. paul nolan heard stories from elderly patients. >> weeping and gnashing of teeth houses. they were totally distraught and could nothing all day but weep, weep, weep, weep and mourn. >> reporter: feeling the need for some form of closure, paul became the driving force behind the addergoole titanic society. it's now produced this memorial park and new stained glass windows in the town's church. one that celebrates the heroic act of pat canavan, who led third class passengers up from where they were trapped on the lower decks so at least some had the chance of getting into the life boat. tom canavan is pat's nephew. and then what happened to him? >> perished. >> reporter: he stayed on the ship? >> he stayed on the ship. >> reporter: 100 years later and people here have finally looked into their past and found not just victims
