in the race for the republican presidential nomination. romney scored a narrow comeback victory in the michigan primary holding off a strong challenge by rick santorum. in yesterday's other primary in arizona as expected romney posted a convincing win. but romney eeked out a hard fought victory in his native michigan where he and santorum had been running neck and neck. susan mcginnis has details. in northville, michigan. good morning, susan. good morning, betty. mitt romney just narrowly escaped what would have been a very embarrassing defeat here in michigan, his home state. winning here and in arizona gives him new momentum heading into future races and it's calling into question rick santorum's longevity. >> mitt romney moves on with renewed momentum. to next week's super tuesday. >> thank you. >> last night he went two for two. he won the primary in arizona and narrowly defeated rick santorum. in michigan. >> we didn't win by a lot but we won by enough and that's all that counts. >> with two more states in the win column, romney is refocusing his efforts on beating president obama. >> in a second term, he would be unrestrained. by the demand of reelection. we can't afford four years of barack obama with nothing to answer to. >> rick santorum finished in second place in both states. his campaign says the tight race in michigan proves this is a two-man race. >> a month ago they didn't know who we are. but they do now. >> one of the biggest issues for voters was a candidate's ability to defeat president obama. recent polls show in a head to head matchup in michigan, the president would beat mitt romney. >> newt gingrich bypassed michigan and arizona to get a jump-start on the ten states in play on super tuesday. he's looking for georgia to be his first win since south carolina in january. >> the odds are pretty good we'll carry georgia. >> ron paul hasn't won a state yet. >> we're still winning a lot of delegates and that's what counts. >> the gop candidates have to win 1144 delegates to clinch the nomination. mitt romney leads that race. so plan on seeing more of newt gingrich as next tuesday comes close. he's concentrating on super tuesday, especially georgia. betty?
