Pelley Good Samaritans in a desperate race to save two children from a raging flood. This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley this is our western edition. Walter scott was 50 years old, jordan edwards 15. They never met but they met the same end, shot to death by Police Officers, neither was armed. Today, scotts killer was convicted in a plea deal and the officer who killed edwards in the suburbs of dallas was fired. We will begin there with omar villafranca. 15yearold jordan edwards was shot and killed by reporter 15yearold jordan edwards was shot and killed by the Police Officer saturday night while leaving a party at this home in suburban dallas. Police initially said the car edwards and four other teen boys were in backed up aggressively toward officers, but after seeing Police Body Cam video, chief Jonathan Haber walked back those statements. Kill the zoo freshman. After reviewing the findings, i have made the decision to terminate oliver, employment with the police department. A vigil was held for the teen last night. He is the family attorney. What the family hopes to get out of all of this is a change, some sort of significant change. And to see it in the culture so nobody has to endure this. Now to the 2015 killing of walter scott in north charleston, south carolina. Today former officer Michael Slager pleaded guilty to federal charges. Mark strassmann was in the courtroom. Reporter with his guilty plea, Michael Slager reversed his two years of denial and admitted knowing he was using Excessive Force when he fatally shot walter scott, a 50yearold motorist slager pulled over on n april 2015 for a broken taillight. Scott ran. Slager chased him. Scott was unarmed and his back was turned when the cell phone video shows slager shoot eight times. Slager claimed selfdefense, that scott had grabbed his taser, but in a hushed federal courtroom judge david norton asked him, do you understand why youre here today, sir . Slager im here to change my plea to guilty. As part of the plea deal, federal prosecutors agreed to drop two other charges and state prosecutors agreed not to retry slager for murder. His first trial ended in a hung jury. Judy scott, Walter Scotts mother, relished hearing slager admit he was wrong. And i love my son. I miss him. I miss him dearly. And i thank god for justice. Reporter slager will be held without bond. He faces up to life behind bars. His sentencing date has not been scheduled. What sentence would you like to see . Life in prison. Reporter Anthony Scott is Walter Scotts older brother. Do you forgive . Not yet. The admission of him being guilty and that he did the crime helps in my healing process. Have i forgiven yet . Im working on it. Reporter in a statement, slagers lawyer said he hoped this plea would help the scott family as they continue to grieve. Slager could appeal whatever sentence he gets, scott, but he cannot change his guilty plea. Pelley mark strassmann, thanks. Today in missouri, two more people were confirmed dead after their vehicles were swept away by floodwaters. At least five people have died there since the weekend, and Michelle Miller is following this. Good evening, i a story only on 5, questions whether san jose State University lied to investigators about a Sexual Harassment investigation. Good evening. We have learned the Santa Clara County District Attorney launched an investigation into the harassment allegations and kpix 5s maria medina says the d. A. s office has some serious questions about how san jose state handled it. Maria. Reporter well, veronica, professor here has not one but two cases of Sexual Harassment against him and the d. A. s office wanted to know if administrators lied about one of those cases essentially breaking the law. Professor lewis counselor of education, accused by a student of Sexual Harassment in 2015. A University Investigation concluded he did act inappropriately. But it wasnt until the mercury news asked questions that san jose put him on leave. The Santa Clara County d. A. Looked into how san jose state handled the investigation, specifically whether two administrators lied. A former dean and associate dean allegedly told a University Investigator they knew of no other formal or informal complaints against the professor. But there was another case against him a 2014 anonymous complaint. The word anonymous is key because chin and mcvay said there werent any formal or informal complaints. In other words, they didnt technically lie since according to san jose state, an anonymous complaint is not the same. Kpixobtained this email from a deputy District Attorney who explains to a whistleblower why the investigation went nowhere
