Pelley breaking news. We project that Hillary Clinton will win arkansas, where the polls have just closed and was e first lady of that state. Our current cbs news estimate shows clinton winning by a big margin. Have a look at that. 68 to 32 . This is our cbs news estimate based on the vote that has been taken so far and the exit polling information. That gives her at least five wins in the 11 States Holding democratic primaries and caucuses. She also wins georgia, virginia, alabama and tennessee in a sweep of the south. Bernie sanders has won his home state of vermont and leads in oklahoma. Donald trump has won four of the 12 states where republicans are voting alabama, georgia, tennessee and massachusetts. And our current estimate shows trump leading in virginia by a slender margin ahead of marco rubio. Rubio is hoping for his first win. There Major Garrett is covering the republicans for us tonight. Nancy cordes is with the democrats. Were going the start with major. Reporter scott, donald trump is leading almost everywhere and is poised to win most of tonights contests. His campaign is girding for a tough battle in virginia with marco rubio and in oklahoma and arkansas with ted cruz. Cruz is expected to win his home state of texas while rubio is hoping for a victory in minnesota. But trump will win a majority of the 595 delegates awarded tonight, and therefore draw closer to the 1,237 dell grants required to secure the republican nomination. For cruz, it comes down to achieving victories outside of texas, and after tonight convincing republicans hes the candidate best positioned to challenge and ultimately defeat trump. Rubio will look for as many strong secondplace finishes as possible and argue with his aggressive attacks on trump in the final days before super tuesday that slowed trumps momentum. For john kasich, there is hope for victory tonight in vermont, but for his campaign, it is all about the contest two weeks from now in ohio. Trumps position in the end will be stronger tonight than ever, and, scott, republicans must now ask themselves if they can or will accept donald trump as their standard bearer, and if not, by what means do they intend to stop him. Pelley Major Garrett for us tonight. Major, thank you. Now well go to nancy cordes with the clintonsanders faceoff tonight. Nancy . Reporter scott, as expected, Hillary Clinton is demeanor indicating the south thanks in no small part to support from africanamericans who were key to her victory in South Carolina over the weekend. There are some bright spots for Bernie Sanders. Hes looking to do well in oklahoma and massachusetts, but he knows that by in large this is Hillary Clintons night, and that may help explain why he chose to come out early tonight after notching a win in his home state of vermont to celebrate. Take a listen. At the end of tonight, 15 states will have voted. 35 states remain. And let me assure you that we are going to take our fight for economic justice, for social justice, for environmental sanity, for a world of peace to every one of those states. [cheering and applause] reporter so an optimistic sanders, but the truth is, scott, that barring some kind of major shift in the trajectory of this race, Hillary Clinton is pulling away in the delegate count in a way that would make it very, very difficult for sanders to catch up. Whats helping her tonight is that shes not just winning all of these Southern States, but shes winning them big, by 20 or 30 points, and that is really going to help her in the delegate hall. Scott . Pelley and we are expecting to hear from Hillary Clinton the next ten or 15 minutes. Of course, well bring that to you, as well. Nancy cordes reporting for us tonight. Thank you, nancy. Joining us on this election night, norah odonnell, cohost of cbs thursday morning and john dickerson, our cbs political director, an consider of face the nation. John, virginia very close for the republicans. Whats going on . Reporter it is close for the republicans. Thats a tough state for marco rubio if he doesnt win virginia. This is the state where he was most likely to benefit from those attacks. Hes been taking it to donald trump, and he would hope that pays off in virginia, but if donald trump picks up virginia, i mean, i was struck by the tableaux behind major in his piece. When Hillary Clinton won South Carolina, she tried to turn the election toward the general election. Donald trumps going to try and do that but with a lot more gold leaf. Hes got a room at mara lago that looks like a refurbished east room, and hes going to say, race is over, and try and use tonight to say its locked in and im already inhabiting the body of the nominee, even though he doesnt have tunnel have the numbers yet. Pelley east room of the white house. Norah, what are you seeing on the democratic side . Reporter as Bernie Sanders said, 35 states remain, but the fact is tonight onethird of the delegates will be decided in the democratic race, and if Hillary Clinton can win large, she can open up what they hope is a 100pilot delegate lead. Thats the goal for this evening, not only to win big and capture more delegates, but they have a confidencebuilding measure, which is for her to say, i won a majority of these states. I won in states with large African American and hispanic population. Thats the base of the democratic party. And the man im running against, Bernie Sanders, has not yet shown he can win muck hispanics and minority voters, which will be key for us. Pelley john, ted cruz is not winning in his wheel house, the Southern States with large evangelical populations. What does that mean for his campaign . Reporter in a time before trump, these states in the south tonight were supposed to be ted cruzs launching pad. He was going to do well tonight. They had a more conservative electorate, a more religious electorate. That was going to be his springboard to the nomination. Well, hes losing to donald trump in those states. And so it robs him of an argument. He needs wins to get delegates also, but he needs an argument for why he should continue, why people should continue to write him checks and why he should be the alternative to donald trump. Pelley hes still hoping to win his home state of texas. Report and maybe a neighboring one. Pelley john, norah, thank you. We have been talking to voters. Anthony mason has been crunching the numbers. Anthony, what have we found . Reporter what were Republican Voters looking for in a candidate on this super tuesday. Thats what we asked them as they left the polls. The most important quality they told suss a candidate that shares their values. Onethird of g. O. P. Voters ranked that first, a candidate who can bring change came in a close second at 32 . Surprisingly perhaps, the ability to win in november came in at the bottom here. Now work the g. O. P. Campaign becoming more negative, even nasty in he seth weeks, we asked Republican Voters who had run the most unfair campaign. Donald trump had the dubious distinction of coming out on top here, 39 said he was most unfair. Ted cruz came in second at 30 . And just 15 said rubio was. It doesnt appear, though, to have hurt trump tonight at least so far, scott. Pelley anthony, thank you very much. John dickerson, im struck by those numbers about unfair campaigning. Reporter people dont like unfair campaigning except when they vote for the person who they think has been most unfairen unfair campaigns work. Thats why donald trump is. People may not like it, but they like him as a possible president. Pelley it has been awfully nasty on the republican side, unprecedented really. Reporter thats right. Marco rubio has tried to be like donald trump in his nastiness. The challenge for him tonight is the thing he cant match donald trump in is the winning part. Pelley thank you very much, john. Today a new York Appeals Court ruled that a lawsuit can proceed against donald trump and his trump university. A former school for real estate investors. New yorks attorney general accuses the school of defrauding thousands of students. Another electionyear battle centers on the another electionyear battle centers on the vacancy for the Supreme Court. Senate republicans want to leave the nomination to the next president. Well, today, the current president tried to change their minds. Heres chief Legal Correspondent jan crawford. Reporter the meeting with Republican Senate leadership was little more than a photoop. Y thank you, guys, come on. Thank you. Reporter minority leader harry reid. At least meet with the president s nominee, which should be coming very quickly, but they are adamant and they said, no, were not going to do this at all. Reporter Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said reid would e the same thing. If the shoe were on the other foot do any of you think the democrat majority in the senate would be confirming a republican president s nomination in the last year of his term . Of course not. Reporter but the president now is narrowing his list of nominees, in search of a solid liberal with a sterling resume who brings diversity, such as federal judge Ketanji Brown jackson, former Supreme Court unerk who was unanimously confirmed to the district court, with support from a relative by marriage, House Speaker paul ryan. And federal appears court judge, paul watford, also a former Supreme Court clerk and a corporate lawyer, and patricia millett, a lawyer in the clinton and bush administrations, who has argued 32 cases in the Supreme Court. Now, another consideration is the election. All things being equal, scott, some democrats believe the president will tap a nominee who can help rally the base, since turnout in november could well be the key to the white house. Pelley jan crawford, thanks. Well, apples top Lawyer Told Congress today that a thief could steal more information toom an iphone than by breaking into a house.
