The man charged with the Charleston Church massacre to buy the gun used to murder nine people. F. B. I. Agents met with the victims families today to explain what happened, and we asked kris van cleave to explain it to us. Reporter f. B. I. Director james comey called the mistake heartbreaking and said, we are all sick this has happened. We wish we could turn back time. On april 11, dylann roof went into this South Carolina gun store to purchase a glock handgun. The transaction triggered an automatic federal battleground check. An f. B. I. Examiner pulled roofs police rap sheet and saw an earlier arrest for drug possession, but she did not see this incident report where roof admitted having the drugs. That confession should have disqualified him from buying a weapon. The examiner never got the report because she couldnt track down the Proper Police department, so she marked roofs case as pending and moved on to other cases. Under the law, if a background check remains unresolved after three days, the sale can proceed. And thats exactly what happened. Roof completed his purchase on april 16. Is the system of background checking the f. B. I. Uses flawed . I dont think so, no. Reporter Daniel Webster is director of the Johns Hopkins center for gun policy and research. Its important to recognize that, while the system didnt work in this case and with tragic results, on an average day in the united states, over 500 times, someone is identified and denied who is trying to purchase firearms. Reporter on the day roof purchased his gun, the f. B. I. Handled more than 30,000 background checks. Scott, director comey has ordered a review. He expects it to be done in the next 30 days. South carolina watching that flag come down felt like a huge weight was lifted off the state. Reporter governor nikki haley presided over the ceremony, surrounded by lawmakers and family members of the emanuel nine. This state house belongs to everybody in South Carolina. And nobody should drive by the state house and think they dont belong, and no one should drive by and feel pain. That was the difference. We needed to take away a symbol that was causing people pain. Reporter within a few hours, a crane had taken down the flagpole and the surrounding fence. Some could not let go. Then, he runs headfirst into a wall. All this to reinforce the contention that holmes had a psychosis that prevented him from knowing right from wrong. Not knowing right from wrong in colorado is what gets a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Just having a Mental Illness even a severe one, is not enough. After closing arguments, the jury begins its deliberations wednesday morning, and, scott, if they find him guilty, everyone, including the jury goes right back to work to decide if he gets life in prison or death. I stand before you so ashamed of my actions, cried farid fata. I dont know what more i can do to express my sorrow and shame. From the rows of victims seated a few feet away came the sound of muffled sobs. Fata, who administered almost 3,000 unneeded chemo treatments, said he had permitted a sin to enter him in a selfdestructive quest for power. Prosecutors said it wasnt complicated the sin was greed. Dr. Fata pounced on every opportunity to use a patients body as a profit center. Reporter its why he told healthy patients they were sick, why he told sick patients they were dying, why he told dying patients he was their only hope, all of it done with an eye on how much money he could claim from insurance. U. S. Attorney barbara mcquade. Do you think it was a highly sophisticated fraud . I do think it was a highly sophisticated fraud. Dr. Fata lied to everyone. He lied to his patients. He lied to his colleagues. He actually falsified a medical study to support the work he was doing and the treatments he was giving. And so he was able to fool many people who were very bright because he himself was very bright and very sophisticated. Reporter monica flagg lived in pain for chemo for non existent bone marrow cancer. Now that its all over, does it lift your pain in any way . I dont know long term what his treatments will do to me emotionally and physically. Did it lift it, yes . Im glad hes behind bars and he will never hurt or poison anyone ever again. Reporter now, the judge ultimately handed down a sentence of 45 years in prison. While some victims thought that punishment was too light, scott, prosecutors say it is highly likely that 50yearold farid fata will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Pelley unbelievable story.
