Director james comey called the mistake heartbreaking and said, we are all sick this has happened. We wish we could turn back time. On april 11, dylann roof went into this South Carolina gun store to purchase a glock handgun. The transaction triggered an automatic federal battleground check. An f. B. I. Examiner pulled roofs police rap sheet and saw an earlier arrest for drug possession, but she did not see this incident report where roof admitted having the drugs. That confession should have disqualified him from buying a weapon. The examiner never got the report because she couldnt track down the Proper Police department, so she marked roofs case as pending and moved on to other cases. Under the law, if a background check remains unresolved after three days, the sale can proceed. And thats exactly what happened. Roof completed his purchase on april 16. Is the system of background checking the f. B. I. Uses flawed . I dont think so, no. Reporter Daniel Webster is director of the Johns Hopkins center for gun policy and research. Its important to recognize that, while the system didnt work in this case and with tragic results, on an average day in the united states, over 500 times, someone is identified and denied who is trying to purchase firearms. Today, the Defense Attorneys in the colorado movie massacre case wrapped up their defense. Theyre trying to save the life of the man who killed 12 people and injured 70 by proving that he was insane. Reporter well, scott, the defense ended with a bit of showandtell, a video of james holmes in a jail cell in november of 2012 about four months after the shooting. In it, he can be seen standing. Then, he runs headfirst into a wall. All this to reinforce the contention that holmes had a psychosis that prevented him from knowing right from wrong. Not knowing right from wrong in colorado is what gets a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Just having a Mental Illness even a severe one, is not enough. After closing arguments, the jury begins its deliberations wednesday morning, and, scott, if they find him guilty, everyone, including the jury goes right back to work to decide if he gets life in prison or death. From the rows of victims seated a few feet away came the sound of muffled sobs. Fata, who administered almost 3,000 unneeded chemo treatments, said he had permitted a sin to enter him in a selfdestructive quest for power. Prosecutors said it wasnt complicated the sin was greed. Dr. Fata pounced on every opportunity to use a patients body as a profit center.
