Tonight the tail end of a powerful noreaster is whipping northern new england. This is portland, maine, where the snow is coming down and the streets are deserted. The storm dumped as much as 2. 5 feet of snow in places, but which places became an issue today. Predictions that the new york city area would see an historic blizzard and paralyzing snowfall did not pan out. As the storm shifted overnight long island, east of the city and massachusetts took the beating. We have a series of reports tonight beginning with anna werner who joins us in boston. Anna . Reporter scott, the snow is still coming down here. You can as you can tell from this bigd me pile of snow behind me, the snowplows are still workingg overtime trying to keep the streets clear. Now, the city of boston had more than 26 inches of snow. Outlying areas saw more than 31 inches of snow from this major storm. Hurricaneforce winds up tos wh 76mph created dangerous white out conditions in many cities across massachusetts. This timelapse video showed the buildup in boston as snow fell at a rate of 2 to 4 inches per hour. 30 miles to the southeast in the coastal town of scituate, a storm surge flooded the streets, damaging cars and homes. Uard the National Guard had to rescuewa a 50yearold man after a wave knocked down his door and filled o his home with seven feet of water. Ar further south in marshfield, a dozen homeowners had to evacuatea after an 80foot section of seaas washe wall was washed away. And the island of nantucket was virtually cut off as some 12,000 residents lost both power and ph phone service. D th people around the town of islip spent the better part of the day clearing roads and sidewalks and digging out cars buried under 15 inches of snow. The travel ban was lifted mid day, but major highways remained virtually empty, save for armies of snowplows. Y even by Late Afternoon businesses remained closed and some roads were inaccessible. Those who ventured on to them ha had to be rescued by good samaritans. The storm developed 90 miles east of the expected track. New england and long island got nailed, but for manhattan and points south, no big deal. The National Weather service a forecaster who predicted a crippling storm that never came for some 10 Million People tweeted a meteorological mea culpa. A lot of commotion,llerin hollering, shoving, dogs, whips and the first command we heard was, women and children to the left, men to the right. Reporter for the next 20 months, the largest death camp in the whole nazi empire was his home where this german jew toiled as a slave laborer. We had to appear naked in front of an ss officer who with one look decided if that person was still able to work. And if that person would not be able to work, he would be sent what we called in prison la language going through the chimney, being gassed and being burned.
