Reporter the prospect of u. S. Airstrikes remains real but will not be limited to iraq. Sharyn, senior Officials Say if u. S. Interests are threatened, u. S. Military actions could target the same sunni insurgents now operating in nerighboring syria. Alfonsi cbs news correspondent Clarissa Ward is in baghdad tonight. Clarissa, the president seemed to raise the question whether Prime Minister maliki can solve this crisis or not. What do people think there . Reporter well, sharyn, obviously, it depends who you talk to, but it has been striking to see a lot of top shiite politicians coming out of the woodwork and saying that maliki must go, that his policies are too sectarian, too divisive, that he has alienated the sunni people and pushed their leaders out of the government. There is a general consensus here in iraq that this country should remain unified, but really that can only happen if they can create a National Unity government, and, frankly, a lot of people here have some doubts about whether maliki can make that happen. Alfonsi but the u. S. Has said its not committed to airstrikes, not committed to boots on the ground, so how is the Iraqi Government going to react to that . Reporter well, there will certainly be some disappointment that the president didnt commit to those airstrikes. Ideally, the iraqis would like to see the u. S. Be a silent partner in the skies, and really the emphasis is on silent there. Youll notice it took them a week to even publicly ask for these airstrikes. They dont want to be seen as being dependent on the u. S. Or being weak, and they certainly dont want to see, sharyn, u. S. Boots on the ground here. Alfonsi thanks. It is already a nation split among sunni and shia muslims and the kurds, each group with its own interests. Holly williams is in Northern Iraq with the kurds. Reporter so, the mountains are controlled by isis. Yes. Reporter we traveled with kurdish fighters north of kirkuk, not far from where theyre taking on the militants. Theyre disciplined and well equipped, but their goal is to protect their own region in the northeast, not to push the militants out of iraq for good. And like everyone else here, they want control of this. Oil is iraqs most lucrative industry, but its also this countrys curse because people are willing to fight and die for it. At this checkpoint outside the oil fields, the kurdish fighters can see the militants but theyre not confronting. But isis is over there. Terrorists . Yeah. Reporter with different groups battling for their own interests, many here believe iraq can no longer survive as one state. Youve had contact with the americans. Yeas, before. Reporter sheikh ali hattam is a tribal leader whos worked with the u. S. To defeat islamic militants. We have two options, he told us. Splitting the country or civil war. And splitting the country is better than killing each other. That sounds simple enough, but splitting iraq in three would be complex and probably violent. Still, sharyn, nearly everyone we speak to here in the north of the country tells us that iraqis can no longer live together. Alfonsi thank you, holly williams, from erbil, iraq, tonight. We learned today 75 government scientists may have been exposed to live anthrax bacteria. It happened earlier this month at the c. D. C. s laboratories in atlanta. Heres dr. Jon lapook. Reporter the unintentional exposure was discovered last friday. The c. D. C. Says researchers transferred what they thought were noninfectious anthrax samples to labs not equipped to handle live bacteria, but the workers who processed the live anthrax used the wrong procedure. Anthrax can affect the lung, skin and gastrointestinal tract. Left untreated, it can cause death. Dr. William schaffner is an expert in infectious diseases. Anthrax is a potential bioterrorism agent, so learning more about how it actually causes disease and how we might prevent the disease in outbreak circumstances is, of course, very important. Reporter the centers for Disease Control says the agency is taking aggressive steps to protect the health of all involved. That includes offering anthrax vaccine plus a 60day course of antibiotics to potentially exposed staff. Based on a preliminary investigation, the c. D. C. Believes general public is not at risk of exposure and does not need to take any protective action. The c. D. C. Lab and hallway areas were decontaminated, and laboratories will be reopened once they are deemed safe. An internal investigation is under way to find out how the breakdown in procedures happened. El nino gained a reputation for bringing stormy, wet weather in the winter of 19971998, when so much rain fell, rivers overflowed and saturated cliffs gave way.
