Ng began. Ents huddled in classrooms as their nervous parents gathered outside waiting to find out if their kids were safe. Pelley and the wounded teacher, were told, was only slightly injured. Chris holmstrom from koin tv. Thank you, chris. Late today, president obama was asked about the shooting. The country has to do some soulsearching about this. This is becoming the norm, and we take it for granted in ways that, as a parent, are terrifying to me, and i i am prepared to work with anybody, including responsible sportsmen and gun to craft some solutions. But right now, its not even possible to get even the mildest restrictions through congress, and thats. We should be ashamed of that. Pelley after the massacre in newtown, connecticut, in december of 2012, the president said, weve endured too many of these tragedies. Bob orr is our justice correspondent. Bob, in the 77 weeks since the president said that, there have been 74 shootings in schools. Whats going on . Reporter well, scott, its a complex problem and a difficult answer. For starters, the number of active shooter cases it just doesnt seem like theyre on the rise. They are on the rise. The workplace is the most common target but schools and public venues like shopping malls come next. The u. S. Now, we found out, is averaging about 16 active shooter incidents a year, thats three times as many as a decade ago. A study done by Texas State University found between 2009 and 2012, 476 people in this country were shot and 209 of them killed in active shooter cases. That is a 150 increase in fatalities over the previous years. Still, this is the troubling part. In terms of mass shootings, incidents in which four or more people are killed, criminologists say in actuality, since the 70s, the numbers have been fairly current. It seems these highprofile cases get all of the attention, but in fact, scott, street gun crimes kill many more people. Pelley but, bob, because these cases are high profile, you have to wonder if theres a copycat effect . Reporter criminal profilers think there clearly is, scott. We know suspects like adam lanza in newtown researched other mass killers. The couple involved in the shootings this past weekend in las vegas reportedly we were told idolized the columbine shooters. This is pretty clear killers are leaving behind things like journals and manifestos that attract more attention and prolong their infamy. Pelley bob orr, thanks very much. In the last few hours, we have learned the names of three of the five american soldiers killed in afghanistan yesterday when a u. S. Air force bomber hit their position by mistake. 19yearold aaron toppen of illinois. Justin helton of waverly, ohio. He was 25. And 22yearold Justin Clouse of washington. Those are the names we have so far. Margaret brennan has been looking into what happened. Reporter the special forces soldiers were on patrol monday night, along with Afghan Forces when a firefight broke out with taliban insurgents. The u. S. Troops requested an air strike to beat back the assault and try to get away by helicopter. But a bomb dropped by a u. S. Aircraft, thought to be a b1 bomber, killed all five americans and at least one afghan. It would be one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in the nearly 14year war. Before yesterday, there had been a total of 15 friendly fire episodes since 2001. Those resulted in 23 deaths among coalition forces, including seven americans. One u. S. Infantry unit had a close call at its outpost two years ago. When a 500pound bomb meant for taliban fighters was mistakenly dropped nearby. U. S. Central command is investigating whether last nights tragic event was the result of human or mechanical error. Pelley Margaret Brennan at the pentagon for us tonight. Margaret, thank you very much. Taliban attacks in afghanistan are rising ahead of saturdays Runoff Election to determine the next president of that country. The leading candidate survived an assassination attempt just a few days ago. If that election is successful, it will be the first democratic transition in afghan history. We have a new cbs news poll out today about the prisoner swap in which the u. S. Released five highranking members of the taliban in exchange for Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. 45 of americans told us they disapprove of the swap. 37 said they approve. And more than half, 56 , said the u. S. Paid too high a price for bergdahl. He was released 10 days ago after five years as a p. O. W. He continues his recovery tonight in a u. S. Military hospital in germany. Another major piece of what america fought for in iraq was lost today. Islamic militants seized control of mosul, iraqs second largest city with 1. 5 million people. The group had already taken the cities of fallujah and ramadi in the west. U. S. Forces spent nearly a decade fighting for control of those cities before withdrawing two and a half years ago. In mosul today, we saw sporadic gunfire and burning military vehicles. The insurgents seized police stations, banks, and government buildings. Many iraqi soldiers dropped their weapons and vanished. Thousands of families are now fleeing the city. Prime minister Nouri Almaliki ordered a state of emergency, and the u. S. State department called the situation extremely serious. Elizabeth palmer is among our most experienced correspondents in iraq. She joins us tonight from beirut, lebanon. Liz, it appears that the iraqi army just collapsed in mosul. How big a setback is this for the government . Reporter its a devastating blow. These islamist fighters, which American Forces and iraqis died trying to defeat, are not only back, theyre now in control of thousands of square miles of territory. Theyve been going from strength to strength for a year, and mosul is just the latest prize. All iraqis watched today as their army that they depend on for security, as you said, just collapsed when they were outgunned. They simply ran away. Pelley liz, many of these fighters, as i understand it, are coming across the border from syria into iraq. Reporter thats right. This is really syrias civil war spilling over, and the border, to all intents and purposes, does not exist anymore. These same islamist fighters took the city of fallujah six months ago. The iraqi army has not been able to dislodge them, and we spoke earlier in the year to a young recruit there. He said the islamists are moving suicide bombers very freely across the whole territory and right into the heart of baghdad. Pelley a fastdeveloping story that well keep watching. Elizabeth palmer reporting tonight from beirut, lebanon. Thank ynw, liz. Well, along americas southern border, there is a surge of unaccompanied children pouring america, 47,000 in the america, 47,000 in the past year. Today, a senate panel voted to give the Obama Administration an extra 2 billion to handle them all. The pentagon is opening shelters on its bases and more than 700 of these children are now being held in an old warehouse in nogales, arizona. Vicente arenas is there. Vicente. Reporter scott, the Border Patrol station here is so overwhelmed, theyve had to hire an outside company to help take care of all the children here. The department of Homeland Security has denied our request to go inside this facility at nogales, citing the age of the children held here. Some of the Illegal Immigrants are as young as 12. The only glimpse inside are these photos of obtained by a local radio station. More than 700 sleep in these large rooms. You can see the foil blankets covering the children. Most traveled alone from el salvador, guatemala, and honduras. Salvadoran diplomat jose chacon has been inside. The facility is inappropriate. Reporter its not appropriate . Not appropriate, yes. translated i was worried because they didnt have a good place to sleep. No privacy or proper bath rooms. Reporter the influx of children is being blamed on poverty and drug related violence in central america. Its also thought some parents wrongly believe policy changes made by president obama prohibit young Illegal Immigrants from being deported. Paula andrade was among the residents in this border town donating supplies. Whats the first thing that went through your mind when you heard all those kids were coming over here without their parents . Im a mom, so i cannot imagine a kid without a mom. Reporter the kids here will eventually be sent to centers in california, texas, and fort sill, oklahoma. Scott, the government now must find all the parents and guardians of all the children here as they go through the deportation hearings. Its a long and complicated process that could last for months.
