Could anyone still be alive tonight, maybe in a pocket under the mud in washington . As searchers hold tightly to their shovels, families cling desperately to hope. The death toll rose today to at least 24. But dozens of people have yet to be accounted for. And no one has been found alive since. Cbs news correspondent Danielle Nottingham is on the scene for us tonight. Danielle . Tt, there are now 300 responders and volunteers on the scene. They divided the disaster zone into a grid so they can search each box at least twice. Those who have searched through the mud compare it to freshly poured concrete. Its thick and sticky, making it hard for machines to remove the debris and muck. The best tools are cadaver dogs and bare hands. Dayn brunner saw three bodies yesterday. One was about eight feet down in debris in a house. The other one was about about the same, and then the third one was in about three feet of dirt and mud. Reporter brunner was looking for his sister, summer. Its believed the car she was driving was swept away by the landslide. If theres a body recovered and there are family members there, they get a chance to do their grieving, and then and theyre left alone. And once thats done, then the bodys secured and the search crews get back in the same area with the cadaver dogs. Reporter loggers have also joined the search. Dan rankin is the mayor of the neighboring town darrington. They have the expertise to respond to an event like this. Absolutely. That is their job every day, rough terrain, brush, mud, and timber. Reporter sonar devices are on hand, along with cameras and microphones that can be poked into air pockets. Many here are struck by how a distance of just a few feet determined who survived and who was swept away. Linda mcpherson was having coffee with her husband, gary. He was pulled out by neighbors but they could not of not find his wife. Fouryearold Jacob Spillers was found by rescuers on saturday. His father and three siblings are still missing. Scott, rescuers were hoping to find people buried in their cars. Instead, theyre finding vehicles twisted and broken into pieces and now some officials are admitting they may never find some victims. Pelley and the very latest on this on cbs this morning tomorrow. Danielle, thank you very much. Now to the search the whole world is following for any signs of Malaysia Airlines flight 370. These images captured three days ago by a french satellite are getting a lot of attention tonight. They appear to show more than 100 objects in the southern indian ocean. That is the end of the route that the boeing 777 is believed to have traveled before all signs of it were lost. Now, as Holly Williams reports, the challenge is to find those objects to see if they are wreckage from the plane. Reporter we flew with a search crew from the new Zealand Air Force today as they combed a 2,000squaremile sector of ocean in their p3 oryan. Just 500 feet over the water, they worked in 30minute shifts to scan the sea for anything that might be the wreckage of flight 370. The pilots spotted a blue object, radioed the news back to base, and a ship was sent to carry out a surface sweep. None of the debris spotted has been linked to the missing jetliner, but Corporal Jesse liddicoat told us hes confident its only a matter of time. Its down here somewhere and the next two days i think are going to be really busy under everyone involved. Reporter these new satellite images may help narrow the search. A french satellite found over 100 objects ranging in size from three to 75 feet long, all floating in a 250squaremile area. The team from new zealand extended their search time today by shutting down one engine to save fuel. But they still didnt have the breakthrough theyd hope for. There are 240 families will and its affecting a lot of people, so to come out and put some closure on something for them would be awesome. Pelley holly is joining us in perth. Is there any confirmation of what the blue object is . Reporter well scott, an australian search team went back and checked on it and it was some large marine mammal. Pelley Holly Williams, thank you very much, holly. It is tricky for another reason these days theres just so much trash in the sea. Chip reid is looking into that. Reporter investigators say those satellite images of debris floating in the indian ocean might be pieces of flight 370, but Charles Moore suspects otherwise. I think its highly likely that its trash and not evidence of the plane. Reporter moore has been studying ocean trash for nearly 20 years at the Algalita Marine Research institute in long beach, california ocean is the distinction of being downhill from everywhere on earth. So if you are looking to find out where trash comes from, you just have to look to the land. Reporter massive amounts of debris washed into ocean during the 2011 japanese tsunami, some drifting as far as california and oregon, where a 66foot dock washed up on the beach. Moore says its possible but unlikely that debris from the japanese tsunami made it to the indian ocean but the 2004 tsunami in indonesia, which is in the indian ocean is another story. The debris from that tsunami may easily have gotten to this part of the ocean, and could still be floating around out there 10 years later because plastic is so persistent in the ocean. It doesnt biodegrade. It doesnt rust. Reporter all that trash, moore says, makes the difficult job of finding a plane at sea even harder. Its a nearly insurmountable problem from my point of view. You have a situation where youre looking for not a needle in a haystack but a needle in a needle factory. Youre looking for trash in an ocean full of trash. Reporter moore estimates there are 200 million tons of debris in the ocean now, scott, and another 15 million tons being added each year. Pelley chip, thanks very much. Now, the f. B. I. Has been examining the Flight Simulator that was taken from the home of the Malaysia Airlines captain. Late today, correspondent bob orr learned that some of the files deleted from the hard drive have been recovered, but sources tell him nothing suspicious was found. Tonight, there is more troubling news on ukraine. David martin has learned there is growing concern in the u. S. Military that russia could take more of ukraine after annexing crimea last week. David is at the pentagon for us tonight. David . Reporter scott, no one knows what Vladimir Putin will do next, but u. S. Intelligence analysts believe he may be preparing to carve out a land corridor connecting russia directly with crimea. Analysts have been watching the buildup of russian infantry, armored and airborne units and estimate they are preparing to seize three cities, all of which are a predominant lie russian speaking population. It could carve a area to crimea that could keep it resupplied. In a phone conversation, defense secretary hagel scheduled the Russian Defense minister to explain the purpose of the buildup, which russia officially calls an exercise. He told me that they had no intention of crossing the border into ukraine. Reporter but no one is taking that to the bank since putin is the one calling the shots, and its unclear what if any influence the Russian Defense minister will have. Pelley david martin, thanks. So what does it actually look like on the ground in Eastern Ukraine . One of the cities that david mentioned is donetsk, and Charlie Dagata is there tonight. Charlie, what do you see . Reporter well, scott, the scenario in washington doesnt fit the situation that weve seen on the ground here. Now, we have been to the border outside of donetsk. Weve seen Ukrainian Forces digging in. We have seen some Ukrainian Military units moving toward the border. It goes without saying we havent seen any russians to speak of. But its worth noting that in this area where there have been several prorussian demonstrations over the past few weeks, those have died down in recent days, and thats important because the russians have always said that if this was a sense that ethnic russians along this Eastern Region were threatened, that gives the military the green light to move in, and these demonstrations have died down over recent days. So if that is in any way an indication, a pretext for the Russian Military to advance as they did in crimea, that would not be justified here along the eastern border with russia. Pelley Charlie Dagata in donetsk, where things seem calmer than before. Charlie, thank you. President obama urged europe to stand united against russias aggression. In a speech he delivered in brussels today. This is not another cold war that were entering into. After all, unlike the soviet union, russia leads no block of nations, no global ideology. The United States and nato do not seek any conflict with russia. Pelley before that speech, the president visited flanders field, the Burial Ground for hundreds of americans killed during world war i. This is the 100th anniversary of the start of what was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Tonight, egypts military chief resigned so he can run for president. General alsissi led the military coup last summer that ousted mohammed morsi. Today, morsi supporters Fought Police in several cities, one student was killed. Today, the Obama Administration extended the deadline for signing up for Health Insurance online. Heres Wyatt Andrews on whether the extension applies to you. Reporter the extension of the obamacare deadline applies to people in line on the healthcare. Gov web site, specifically consumers who tried to enroll but did not complete the process by march 31, this monday. Just two weeks another health and Human Services secretary, kathleen sebelius, had called march 31 a hard deadline. There is no delay beyond march 31. Reporter the extension was caused by the lastminute crush of applicants. Healthcare. Gov, which crashed last october, had 2. 3 million visitors in the last two days. And officials are concerned it could fail again. Alexis stewart of maryland told us she wanted insurance but waited until the end to save money. I felt like i had to pay something immediately, so i didnt feel financially stable in order to make that jump. Reporter so you were delaying what might be your first payment. Correct. Reporter but how the administration will measure who was in line and who gets this extension is an issue because essentially the system will take your word for it. Here was the reaction from House Speaker john boehner another deadline made meaningless. The administrations now resorting to an honor system to enforce it. What the hell is this, a joke . Reporter the reaction from the Insurance Industry was mixed today, scott. Insurers want a deadline to be set and very soon, but it is also true that these same insurers will probably win more customers who are younger and more profitable. Pelley wyatt, thanks very much. It also seems winter got an extension today. This is a massive storm that clipped the northeast. The new jersey shore got half a foot of snow. There was a blizzard on cape cod in massachusetts with up to 10 inches of snow, and howling, galeforce winds. There was a ruling today on whether College Athletes may unionize. Wrongly convicted, shes tasting freedom for the first time in 30 years. And a dramatic rescue in the nick of time when the cbs evening news continues. Pelley tonight, investigators in houston are looking into the possibility that a welders torch set off a fire that destroyed a 50 million apartment complex under construction. A remarkable rescue was captured on tape by workers in an office across the street. Heres manual bojorquez. Reporter high winds quickly pushed the fire through the nearly completed apartment complex. That man trapped on a fifth floor balcony was construction worker curtis ricin. I thought i was going to die right there. And i said, i i gotta do something. I said, god, you gotta save me. You gotta get me out of here. Reporter the only way off the balcony was a fire track ladder. Captain hawghton was near the top rung. The fire was popping and cracking and the fire was really loud. You could hear the roar of the fire. I was on the ladder in full gear and it was really hot. We lowered the ladder to him and he jumped from the fifth to the fourth floor. His feet made it okay but when he was falling back his hand barely caught the edge. Oh, my god. I told him, hold on a second. Lets get in position. He did. He was real calm, cool. And gave the signal to jump, he jump to the ladder a couple of feet, and just grabbed on to him and said, rs hold on, about four to five seconds the whole fifth floor and the roof collapsed. You can hear a big snap, crack, as its falling. Seconds later you feel the heat, and the wall falls. You know, it was pretty close. Reporter the two men later posed for this picture air, brief celebration before both returned to work. Manual bojorquez, cbs news, houston. Pelley our boston station wbz is reporting that two firefighters have been killed today as they battled a nine alarm fire in the back bay. More than a dozen people were taken to hospitals. Pelley its just a first step, but there was a remarkable ruling today that could revolutionize college sports. A regional director of the National Labor Relations Board ruled that Football Players who receive full scholarships qualify as employees and may legally unionize. The case stems from Northwestern University in chicago, and Dean Reynolds is there. Reporter Northwestern University quarterback kain colter led the effort to have College Athletes treated as school employees. We need the same protections that they get. Right now, were not receiving them so you have to think down the line. Um, these are our lives and we want to make sure that were protected. Reporter among the demands put forward by the College Athletes player association, guaranteed coverage for sports related medical expenses. Fewer fullcontact practices to limit injuries. And allowing players to be paid for making commercials. In his 24page decision, peter ohr of the National Labor Relations Board, said the players who receive athletic scholarships fit the definition of employees. But critics point out that classing players as employees could lead to huge salary demands, to strikes, or lockouts. The ncaa said it was now, this was a decision by one regional regulator, scott, and because the n. L. R. B. Does not have jurisdiction over public universities, the ruling applies only to private schools like northwestern. Northwestern says it plans to appeal to the full board in washington and it has until april 9 to do it. Dean ronalds in our chicago newsroom, dean, thanks very much.
