Just as we wer just as we were running out of words to describe this endless winter, today the Weather Service offered historic and catastrophic to describe the potential of the storm making its way across the south tonight. Winter storm watches, warnings and advisories are up from texas all the way over to the east coast, the storms next target. Tonight, alabama is getting a second round of snow. And along the storms path, ice is likely to bring down power lines and make roads treacherous. We have a team of cbs news correspondents covering the storm. First, Mark Strassmann in atlanta. Mark. Reporter heres the worry, scott. Two weeks ago, it took three hours of precipitation to ice in and gridlock atlanta. Local forecasters say this storm could bring 18 hours of precipitation. In anxious atlanta, roads and highways were lightly traveled all day. Many commuters stayed home, most schools canceled classes. The National Weather system predicted this storm may be of historic proportions for the area, with significant, crippling ice totals. As much as nine inches of snow is forecast for north georgia. Freezing rain could become ice a halfinch thick in metro atlanta, over threequarters of an inch thick east of the city. Georgia power has assembled 5,000 utility workers ready to respond, 2,000 from other states. All the Weather Services are projecting a heck of a lot of ice. Reporter Aaron Strickland directs storm operations for georgia power, the states largest utility. That ice is his main worry. What happens there is it builds up on the trees, and we have a heck of a lot of trees in georgia. Those trees start falling. When they fall, they bring down the power lines. Reporter the home depot in downtown atlanta had run out of most storm supplies no generators, no firewood, no ice melt. The storm lanterns, theyre out. All the storm lanterns are gone. So it would be naive of me to ask if you have any salt, right . No salt. Reporter the Stores Manager told me many people bought charcoal and propane for grills. They plan to cook outside if they lose power. Forecasters think this could be atlantas worst ice storm since 2000. Scott, a half Million People then lost power. Pelley and the National Guard has been put on alert in case evacuations are necessary there. Mark, thanks very much. Storm warnings are up tonight in the carolinas, and Wyatt Andrews is there. Reporter heavy snowfall in the carolinas led to hundreds of accidents like the one we found on interstate 95 near fayetteville. Paramedic gary whitman said the driver was not hurt, but lost control on an unseen patch of ice. The roads getting very slick very quickly, so if youre on the road, be careful. Reporter is he all right . Yes, hes going to be okay. Just shaken up a little bit. Hes lucky. Reporter road crews tried to stop the highways from freezing by spraying two million gallons of salt water, but the forecast was unclear on the precise line between snowfall and ice, and the snow predictions still ranges between two and eight inches. The governor of North Carolina is pat mcgrory. The difficulty with this storm is its very unpredictable, and this team is trying to adjust to the ever changing weather patterns. Tonight highway signs around the state are displaying this message alerting drivers of this afternoons child abduction in oakland. Police believe a shoplifter carjacked an infiniti outside a safeway on redwood road near highway 13. Kpix 5 reporter brian webb is there tonight and brian, whats the latest on the amber alert . Reporter well, there have been several sightings of that vehicle but so far, not the one police are looking for. At the safeway where it started kind a strange scene. We have all these police and reporters here and shoppers trying to come and go from the store as they usually would this time of night. This all started inside the safeway as a robbery report of a man trying to take off with lobster tails. By the time police arrived, it had turned into a carjacking and kidnapping. Police tell me after that the same man came out into the parking lot and armed with a knife, got into an suv and forced an elderly man and an approximately 13yearold girl to drive away with him inside. They were last seen headed southbound on redwood road. That was around 12 45 this afternoon. Police do not think the victims know the man with the knife so they issued that amber alert afraid for their safety. Shoppers say this kind of crime is happening more often in the area.
