Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. There is breaking news out of texas this evening. Where a judge has ordered a hospital to remove life support from a brain dead woman. The hospital had refused because Marlise Munoz is pregnant. Anna werner is at the courthouse in fort worth for us this evening. Anna . Reporter scott, the state judge ruled the breathing st be turned off no later than monday afternoon. Family attorney heather king said this shortly after the ruling. This is the decision we sought. Theres nothing happy about today. This was a sad situation all the way around. We are relieved that eric munoz can now move forward with the process of burying his wife. Reporter Marlise Munoz was 14 weeks pregnant when her husband eric found her unconscious in their kitchen on november 26. Two days later, the 33yearold was declared brain dead by doctors at John Peter Smith hospital. Her family wanted to disconnect the breathing machine, but the hospital refused citing a 1999 state law. It says today larry thompson, the lawyer representing the hospital said it believes the statute was enacted to protect the life of the child. But the munoz familys lawyer, jessica janicek, described the hospitals stance as a science experiment. She said testing found the fetus, now at 22 weeks, is deformed with fluid on the brain, a fact the hospital did not refute. Lynn machado is Marlise Munozs mother. We spoke to her earlier this month. I break down and i cry because i know in my heart my daughters gone but to see her shell there and being forced to be alive by the ventilators and the feeding tubes and all, its hard to see her when we feel like were caught in this limbo. Reporter the county hospital issued a statement tonight saying it appreciates the impact of the consequences of the order on all the parties involved and will be consulting with the district attorneys office, scott, to determine what to do next. Pelley anna, you said ms. Munoz was found unconscious by her husband. Do they have any idea what happened to her . Reporter its a guess, but the doctors are thinking it may possibly have been a blood clot, maybe in her lungs, scott. Pelley anna, thanks very much. Today after months of record highs, the Financial Markets took a beating. The dow industrials gave up more than 318 points, or nearly 2 . The s p was down 38 points, or just over 2 . For the week, the dow lost 3. 5 , the s p is off a bit over 2. 5 . Our Senior Business correspondent Anthony Mason is with us here. Anthony, whats going on . Anthony, whats going on . Reporter scott, weve had the biggest twoday point drop since last june but there was no major headline that provoked the selloff. The markets look reacting to disappointing Economic Data out of china and from some emerging markets. The damage has been sharp and quick, particularly to Major InternationalDow Companies including boeing, visa, and dupont which are all down about 5 just over the past two days. But remember, the s p 500, the broadest index of the market, is up 59 since august of 2011, for months many analysts were saying they were due for a selloff, the dow is still a thousand points away from an official 10 correction. The last time that happened was 2011. Pelley anthony, thanks very much. Also heading down tonight is the temperature. The deep freeze moved deeper into the south today and the death toll from the extreme weather rose to 17. Three people were killed in this chainreaction pileup yesterday in indiana. Elaine quijano is in new york city where it never got over 19 degrees. Elaine . Reporter scott, the thermometer hear reads about 15 degrees this hour but at one point today it felt like minus six. Coast guard ice breakers have been working to clear the way for barges transporting gasoline and Home Heating Oil on the hudson river. Ice in parts of the river is eight inches thick. Commuter ferry trips between new york and new jersey took up to three times longer than usual as captains had to navigate through the frozen slaps. We were with captain c. W. Davis. This ice, if not gone over properly, can actually sink a boat. It could pierce the hull and actually cause some severe flooding and just goes downhill from there. Reporter the commute was not much better in the south where ice caused nearly 200 wrecks in houston. Two people died on louisianas icy roads. It took 19 hours to clear last nights pileup near michigan city, indiana, some victims were trapped in the wreckage and bitter cold for hours, including jeff renell. I wedged underneath the gas tank part of the semi truck and thats why so it took three hours to get me out because my feet were wedged kind of underneath the truck. And so they had to cut that out and it just took forever. Reporter the cold snap has been hard on firefighters, kept busy by fires caused by people trying to stay warm. This fire in west bridgewater, massachusetts, was caused by ashes from a wood stove. Richard donovan is the fire chief. The first hydrant they found was frozen which meant they had to try to find another hydrant, the next three hydrants beyond that were also frozen. Reporter scott, the cold in the midwest and northeast is driving up prices for heating fuel. Natural gas prices are up nearly 28 since last friday, Home Heating Oil is up about 6. 5 . Pelley these very cold temperatures expected to last into february. Elaine, thanks very much. The subzero weather hindered the search for victims of a terrible fire in quebec. Ice, a foot thick, covered the ruins of a retirement home. Crews brought in Steam Machines to melt the ice. At least eight people were killed in the fire but another 30 are missing and presumed dead. Fire raced through the home early yesterday. The cause is not known. Theres growing concern tonight about the safety of american athletes headed to the winter olympics. The games are being held near a part of russia where islamic terrorists have been fighting for independence. Bob orr is following developments for us. Bob . Reporter scott, senior u. S. Officials now say intelligence is monitoring what it calls an uptick in threats against the upcoming olympics. Sources say these threats are not specific but islamic radicals are vowing to avenge the killing of innocent muslims. And Russian Forces are continuing to search for potential suicide bombers. Were told dozens of f. B. I. Agents will be in russia along with Diplomatic Security agents who will be escorting u. S. Athletes to and from all events. Now, while thats a common practice, officials are a little bit worried with the sochi venues being so widely scattered that americans will be exposed longer to potentially vulnerable travel. The pentagon also has plans to help evacuate americans in the event of some kind of major incident. Weve learned that two ships the Mount Whitney and also a cruiser will be patrolling black sea equipped with helicopters and medical facilities. Also, the u. S. Olympic committee now and the state department are urging americans not to Wear Clothing with u. S. Logos outside of secure zones. In other words, scott, u. S. Athletes should not wear uniforms away from the olympic venues. Pelley opening ceremonies due on february 7. Bob, thanks very much. Today it looked like peace talks would fail before they even started in the effort to end the most vicious war in the world. Both the syrian dictatorship and the rebels trying to overthrow it vowed to walk out of the talks, but now they have agreed to meet in geneva tomorrow. No one is expecting progress any time soon. More than two million refugees have fled that war. Holly williams met a syrian family on the Turkish Border who told her the assad dictatorship is using a new weapon against civilians. Reporter the haj ali family fled aleppo this week, walking and hitchhiking for two days to reach the safety of turkey. They told us that on the weekend their neighborhood, al hamra, was pulverized by barrel bombs, a new weapon in syrias civil war. This internet video thought to show the aftermath of the attack on al hamra, though we cant verify it. Barrel bombs are cheap and crudely made. A simple container packed with explosives and sometimes scrap metal. Juma haj ali told us they destroy everything for 200 yards in either direction. His daughterinlaw said the bombs rained down on them for two days. There were dead bodies everywhere she said. The children cant take it anymore. Theyre terrified. Her husband and the childrens grandmother are both missing. Unlike rockets or mortars which can be aimed, barrel bombs kill large numbers of people indiscriminately. This video, apparently captured by a Syrian Government soldier, shows how theyre thrown from helicopters with no regard for what or who they hit. Juma told us hes seen people decapitated by barrel bombs and others lose their limbs. On sunday, he said, one of the bombs wrecked the familys home. When the dust cleared, he couldnt find his wife. He told us he prays to god that somehow she survived. Syrian opposition groups say hundreds, even thousands of civilians have been killed by barrel bombs. And, scott, thats one reason why the opposition has been so reluctant to sit down for talks with the syrian regime. Pelley holly williams. Thank you, holly. Now, given what holly has just reported, let us show you an astounding video we got into the newsroom today. This is aleppo, syria, earlier in the week after a government strike in a rebel neighborhood. shouting we dont know what led these men to dig in this spot, but they were frantic to claw the packed powder of a flattened building. After two minutes, you spot the face of a girl, maybe around two or younger, but no clear sign of life. Then right there she raises her arm to wipe away the dust. Shes so tightly packed its a wonder she didnt suffocate. After about eight minutes she was free. We dont know whats become of that girl, but more than 130,000 people have been killed in that threeyearold war. The law is catching up with changing attitudes about marijuana. The Justice Department is considering allowing banks to do business with Legal Marijuana sellers. As you know, sales of pot for Recreational Use are legal in colorado and washington state, but right now a bank that processes money even from legal pot sales could be charged with drug racketeering. Its not just the law thats changing. Attitudes are changing as well. A new cbs news poll finds that for the first time a slim majority of americans believe that marijuana should be legal. Back in 1979, only 27 thought so. More now from Barry Petersen in colorado. Reporter do you think that this would be a good growing area . Well, it seems to be a pretty solid building. Reporter realtor rona hanson is marketing for changing attitudes. Her real estate ad says come to her if you need room to grow. Im getting a lot of renters, people who dont necessarily have the money to buy a house and want to be able to rent a space in someone elses home. Reporter and grow pot . And grow pot. Reporter and she is not surprised that a majority of americans now favor legalizing marijuana. Since 1996, 20 states and the District Of Columbia have passed laws allowing the sale of marijuana for medicinal use. Now colorado and washington allow marijuana use both for medicinal and recreational purposes. And four more states are considering legalization through Ballot Initiatives or legislation this year. In california, people were Gathering Signatures on a petition to get legalization on the ballot. Weve collected thousands of signatures so far and i think with the support it can make it to the ballot. Reporter the number of americans who have tried pot has remained steady at about 40 , but what has changed is the growing number now frustrated with current drug laws. I think people dont like the idea of their children and grandchildren being criminalized for things that they did. Older people feel that, you know, it wasnt terrible for us and if our children do it they shouldnt be thrown in jail. Reporter your parents would never have accepted this. Absolutely not. Reporter marijuana is still illegal under federal law, scoot, but the intriguing thing about our poll is widespread support that this issue be decided state by state. Pelley today 24 top surfers hit the waves off Northern California in one of the sports great competitions. John blackstone tells us they flew in from every corner of the world as soon as they heard those timeless words surfs up. Reporter the big wave surfers competing today in the Mavericks Invitational can thank Mother Nature for producing the 40foothigh breakers, but they should also thank mark sponsler, the surf forecaster who accurately predicted the perfect surf was on its way here to half moon bay. You want the swell but not the chop and the winds. You dont want the perfect storm. You want it like a lake sheet glass with giant long swells rolling in. Reporter spencer, a surfer himself, sought just the right storm building monday in the middle of the pacific. Hurricaneforce winds started developing on the International Dateline pushing east which generated seas, raw, stormy surf. All pushing right towards Northern California here at mavericks. Reporter some of the power from the storm pushed big waves to the south producing huge breakers that hit beaches in hawaii on wednesday. The storm stirred up the ocean 3,000 miles away, sending big waves in this direction but then the storm got pushed north, leaving california sunny and dry. Its the same weather pattern thats responsible for californias drought, a persistent High Pressure system off the west coast that has sent every storm this winter north. But the waves created by the storms still get here. If there is a Silver Lining to californias drought, the surfers at mavericks have found it. John blackstone, cbs news, half moon bay, california. I still cant believe, like that even happened. I felt like there was no one that could stop us. I will remember this game for the rest of my life. Reporter the game was against their arch rivals, mount airy high school. But to fully appreciate what happened here, you first need to know how coach Josh Thompson prepared them for this night. It all started a few days earlier with an old ball and a gold sharpie. Coach thompson told each player to pick someone to dedicate the game to. It could be an uncle, grandpa, one kid picked his parents. They all enjoyed the exercise, but safe to say no one took it more seriously than junior guard Spencer Wilson. He picked his friend josh rominger. Joshs passion for life just really drew me towards him. Reporter spencer and josh were two great friends with one lousy thing in common they both had cancer. The difference was spencer beat his and josh didnt. He died nine months ago. His joy illuminated the room and it was always apparent to me that he was special. Reporter before the game, spencer wrote a letter to joshs mom explaining what they were doing and why he would be playing for josh. Just wanted to let you know the impact your son has on my life to this day. I will never forget him. Play for josh. I read it and cried. Reporter joshs mom deena rominger. They had that bond. Nobody else knew how josh felt except for spencer. Reporter spencer says he still thinks about josh everyday. Thats why this opportunity meant so much to him. During the time we touched the ball i found where i wrote josh and i looked for that and reporter put your hand on it . Put my hand on it every single time. Reporter thought of him . Yes. It meant a whole lot to me. Reporter which brings us to the end of that game. With two seconds left on the clock, bishop down by a point and the rivals at the free throw line, bishop needed a miracle. And some say thats exactly what they got. Rebound, leads it a those wilson, three quarter got a shot, its gone oh, my goodness Spencer Wilson from 50 feet out wins the game for the villains reporter in the official record book, Spencer Wilson will get credit for that remarkable hail mary.
