It was a day of drama in the land of shakespeare. As an audience of millions awaited the debut of a new young player on the world stage, a future king of england. He was introduced today by his beaming parents, Prince William and the duchess of cambridge, the former kate middleton. The infant, just a day old, could be on the throne late this century, but for the immediate future hell be in diapers. Mark phillips is in london. What may have become the most famous hospital door in the world finally opened and revealed cheers and applause one small baby, one proud couple, and the picture the world has been waiting for a baby with no name at least no name we know. But a prince in line to one day be called king. And learning the trade already, it seems. When the royal couple gave the royal wave, the royal baby seemed to wave, too. Well, hes got a good pair of lungs on him, thats for sure. Hes a big boy, hes quite heavy. Were still working on a name. Well have that as soon as we can. It is first time weve seen him, really, so having a proper chance to catch up. Reporter this was a relaxed and thoroughly modern royal rock star couple, both comfortable talking about their new pride and joy. Very emotional. Yes, very emotional. I think it is with any parent knows what this feeling is like. Reporter and inevitable question, who does he look like. Got her looks, thankfully. No, no, no reporter the betting by the way is still on james or george as the new princes name, but thats for another day. This day was about how the royal atmospherics have changed. Stop for a minute and compare todays young, hip royals with the same scene at the same hospital 31 years ago when william was born to charles and diana. Not just the clothes are different. Child car safety rules have changed, too. Now the prince with no name is buckled in. And his father jumps in the drivers seat to take the family home. Home to their refurbished digs at Kensington Palace where the couple will live. This is not the last time this familys public and private lives collide. In fact, to try to preserve the privacy, its thought the family may well go and stay with her family at their home in the country where she can get some grandmotherly help and where the illusion of normalcy can continue for a while. Scott . Reporter Mark Phillips at Kensington Palace, former residence of diana, princess of wails. Mark, thanks a lot. From britains royal family we turn to Americas National past time and the doping scandal. Yesterday Milwaukee Brewers outfielder ryan brawn was suspended for the reason of the season. Tonight jim axelrod tells us a bigger name could be next. Jim . Thats right, braun was one of at least 15 Major League Baseball players under investigation for taking performanceenhancing drugs. This includes the games highestpaid player, new york yankee alex rodriguez. An executive for a Major League Baseball team tells us brauns 65game suspension could be nothing compared to what rodriguez faces. Ball is hit well. Reporter the executive says its not a matter of if rodriguez will be suspended for using performanceenhancing drugs but when. They have an overwhelming amount of evidence on this guy showing multiple years of usage. Hes met with Major League Baseball, hes seen the evidence he is staring down a penalty much, much harsher than brauns. It could be years or even a lifetime suspension. Both braun and rodriguez are on a list of players accused of using banned drugs from a now closed antiaging clinic in south florida run by a man named tony bosch who is now cooperating with baseball. T. J. Quinn first reported the doping story for espn in february and says brauns choice to accept his penalty suggests the evidence bosch is sharing is strong. People, you know, have a strong understanding that theres a lot of evidence out there, that it comes directly from tony bosch and it was compelling enough to get one of the biggest names in the game to just concede that baseball had that goods on him. If thats the case they know somethings coming with arod. Its just a matter of time. Reporter according to the major league executive we spoke with, baseball has a lot more on rodriguez than just drug use. Rodriguez than just drug use. A Major League Baseball announcement about rodriguez is expected sometime in the next two weeks. We contacted representatives for alex rodriguez. They had no comment, directing us instead to the Players Union which also had no comment. But just last month a lawyer for rodriguez called baseballs investigation despicable. Pelley much more coming on this story, jim. Thanks very much. We just learned that the Southwest Airlines plane involved in that accident at new Yorks Laguardia airport last evening skidded a third of a mile down the runway after its nose gear collapsed. The nose gear strut was forced up into the body of the plane, crushing a compartment that holds electronics. There were 150 people on board the flight nashville, ten of them were injured, but none seriously. Elaine quijano is following the investigation. Reporter passengers aboard Southwest Airlines flight 345 say they had no real warning that anything was wrong before their plane hit the ground hard and skidded more than 2,000 feet, stopping halfway down the runway. All of a sudden its like it just took a nosedive and hit the runway. Reporter anniebell hanna was sitting a few rows from the back of the plane. When the plane hit i went forward, up and forward. I had my seat belt on but i came up out of the seat and forward. Reporter you hit your head. I hit my head on the seat in front so i tried to put my hand out to stop myself from actually hitting but i still hit my head. Reporter just before landing pilots typically see a display of three green lights on the control panel indicating the planes landing gear has been fully lowered. The National Transportation safety board has launched a full investigation which will include a look at that system. Authorities will also examine the planes maintenance records, trying to determine why the boeing 737s nose gear failed. The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder are now at n. T. S. B. Headquarters in washington where officials are going over the information. In a statement, Southwest Airlines said the plane was last inspected july 18, 2013, and this the aircraft entered service in october, 1999. Investigators will be looking whether the planes landing gear was part of that inspection. 737s are considered the workhorse of airlines around the world. There are some 5,600 in use. Landing gear accidents like this one are exceedingly rare. And reiterating, the n. T. S. B. Said this afternoon that the planes nose gear collapsed backward and upward into the planes fuselage. Scott, the jet has been moved to a hangar here for the information. Pelley elaine, thank you very much. Three americans were killed today in a Suicide Attack in afghanistan. It happened in wardak province. A lone attacker riding a donkey blew himself up. Six americans and four Afghan Soldiers were wounded. As the u. S. Begins to wind down the war in afghanistan, some members of congress are advocating direct action to stop the bloodbath in syria. More than 100,000 people, mostly civilians are believed to have been killed in that civil war. In a letter to the Senate Arms Services committee americas top military officer has outlined several possible plans for u. S. Intervention. David martin reports that each of them comes with a heavy price. Reporter joint chiefs chairman general Martin Dempsey listed five option it is u. S. Military is prepared to carry out if the president gave the order. Train, advise, and assist Opposition Forces in safe areas outside of syria. That would require several hundred to several thousand american troops and cost 500 million a year. It would strengthen the opposition but also might help extremist factions linked to al qaeda. Conduct limited air and missile strikes against Syrian Forces and command centers. Hundreds of aircraft and ships operating in the mediterranean would attack hundreds of targets inside syria. That would cost billions of dollars and inflict significant damage on Syrian Forces but could not guarantee the regimes collapse and would probably cause civilian casualties. Establish a nofly zone over all of syria. That, too, would require hundreds of aircraft and cost up to a billion dollars a month. And might not accomplish much since the syrian army relies mostly on groundbased artillery and missiles, not air power. Establish buffer zones inside syria as safe havens for opposition fighters and civilians. That would require smaller no fly zones but also thousands of u. S. Troops to defend the safe havens. Estimated cost more than one billion dollars a month. Destroy or seize syrias chemical weapons. A massive operation that would require a nofly zone plus air strikes plus thousands of american troops. Again, the estimated cost would be well over one billion dollars a month. Dempsey warned that intervention would end up costing so much the u. S. Military might not be able to respond to crises in other parts of the world or it might trigger a sudden collapse of the Syrian Government and unleash the very chemical weapons we seek to control. Pelley david martin at the pentagon for us tonight. David, thank you very much. Pope francis is on the second day of his visit to brazil.
