And the tale from a mister use mystery. Why did j. K. Rowling try to sneak her new book to the public under a novel name . Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Nearly everyone ha pelley good evening. We began the broadcast friday saying that nearly everyone in america had an opinion about the George Zimmerman case as it went to the jury. Well, tonight, the same is true about the verdict. Protesters took to the streets after the jury of six women, uine of them black, acquitted zimmerman of murder and manslaughter charges in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Many of those protesters are demanding that the Justice Department now bring federal civil rights charges against zimmerman. Today the attorney general promised only to follow the facts and the law. Lhis case first came to National Attention when the Sanford Florida Police declined to restst zimmerman believing that the Neighborhood Watch volunteer shot martin in selfdefense. Estorsters at that time accused the police and zimmerman of racial bias. Now even after the trial and the not guilty verdict, zimmermans legal problems may not be over. Heres mark strassman. Reporter attorney general eric holder addressed one of americas oldest African American sororities. The Justice Department shares your concern. I share your concern. applause and as we first acknowledged last spring, we have opened an investigation into this matter. Ar reporter Trayvon Martins parents are expected to follow civil suit against zimmerman alleging wrongful death. He would have to testify. What was in George Zimmermans heart . We sat down this afternoon with angela corey, the special prosecutor. While the jury was allowed to consider manslaughter, corey has been criticized for focusing on a murder conviction for the entire trial. Did you overcharge when you were pushing for Second Degree murder . I dont think that we overcharged. He killed a young man because he thought he was a criminal. And he should be held accountable for what he did. You wanted accountability. A manslaughter conviction would have put zimmerman behind bars. So why not push harder for that . In hindsight that might have been something we should have done. We second guess ourselves on trials we win. Gosh, i wish i had done a better job at this or that. Its hard to say what could have changed this verdict. Reporter are you comfortable with George Zimmerman in particular getting his gun back . Im not comfortable with the way George Zimmerman went out into the night armed looking for someone he believed was dangerous. If you believe somebody is dangerous enough to call the police, dont get out of your car. Reporter a white house ca spokesman said that president obama would stay out of that opartment of justice investigation, scott. The spokesman said it would be inappropriate t pelley mark, thank you. Correspondent don dahler sat win with zimmermans attorneys today, mark omara and don west. Dahler asked omara about the possibility of further legal action against zimmerman. L im not concerned at all about the department of justice. Theyve already done their investigation. The f. B. I. Has looked at this theyv e f. B. I. Has lar. Evi never found any evidence of racism or inappropriate actions by george that would suggest a civil rights violation. I also dont see much concern over the civil litigation that may come. Would the family sue George Zimmerman . Very well. Does he have a specific defense to it. Absolutely. Does he also have immunity . Yes. Yed. Reporter because of the thend your ground law. Yes, the portion of it is that says if you act reasonably in selfdefense, you are immune to suit. Lets not for get in that intext all the information that did not make it into the criminal trial about Trayvon Martin is going to be very relevant in any civil ioceedings. So i dont know why they would fant to risk sort of damaging the memory of Trayvon Martin by opening themselves up to review that evidence. Reporter George Zimmerman may well get the gun that was ssed in this killing back. What do you think about that . Well, he has the right as any other citizen to carry a weapon. That particular weapon, he should never carry again. Theres no reason to carry a weapon thats already killed somebody. Reporter i asked the attorneys what specific evidence Trayvon Martins family would not want revealed. D. Ott, they mentioned evidence of martins marijuana use and llxt messages on his cell phone that describes being in fights. Pelley don, thank you very much. The verdict, of course, divided of city of sanford, florida, im hurt. Im disappoint. And what i mean by hurt is that i felt like we were set back because how can i tell people to trust the Justice System when there is no justice. Reporter Jonathan Mcknight has a successful real estate business in florida. His son jonathan jr. Followed the zimmerman trial closely. He told me what the verdict is and he was panicking. He said, dad, hes free. Its just really hard to trust the Justice System right now. Reporter but sanford Restaurant OwnerMichael Obrien said justice was served and credits zimmermans legal team. It didnt come out the way a lot of people wanted it to but its absolutely how its supposed to work. Reporter for obrien this was never about race. I think George Zimmerman felt like he was protecting his turf. I think trayvon, he was from miami, which is a much more urban area, if you will. I think he had much more of a, hey, dont bother me attitude. I think that on that particular night, i think those two things collided in a very bad way. Reporter race was not a factor . No, i dont think he. I dont think he. I dont think he engaged him because he was a black kid. I think he thought he was doing the right thing. I just think he overstepped it. Reporter but mcknight says his son has learned that his safety may be in his own hands. We have laws in place to protect peoples civil rights. Why do we still need to have this conversation . Because the laws are only words if theyre not enforced. Orter orter these two men do t thatn one point, scott that lispite everything, a little civility on the night more than a year ago that they met would have gone a long way to a deusing a deadly situation. Pelley Michelle Miller in sanford, michelle, thank you very much. E week. As the east gets stuck in a heat wave. Its hot in a lot of the country, but in washington d. C. , it hit 95 degrees today. Ofd of course the humidity made it feel even hotter. It was the same in philadelphia and it was 93 in caribou, maine. David bernard is our cbs news weather consultant. David, how long is this going to oast . Scott, it will be around for a while at least through the rest of the week. The big problem is the jet stream, its riding way to the north. Thats creating a bubble of hot air over the mid atlantic and also a large part of the northeast and parts of the midwest. Until that moves, not much is going to change. Emocratic majority leader harry reid says he will now force republicans to vote up or down on stalled nominations to president obamas cabinet. What reid intends to do is considered so extreme theyre g iting it the nuclear option. Nancy cordes is at the capitol to explain this for us. Nancy . Reporter well, scott, there are about seven president ial nominees who have been waiting for confirmation votes by the oenate anywhere from a few months to two years, republicans who oppose these nominations for a variety of reasons have been threatening to filibuster in order to prevent those votes from taking place. So now the majority leader, lrry reid says he has had enough. What hes threatening to do tomorrow is to change rules that fite back decades so that these seven nominees can be confirmed with a simple 51vote majority restead of the 60 votes that are needed to overcome a filibuster, scott.
