Were in the bahamas with search and rescue teams still looking for hundreds missing since dorian. And a look at whats behind an alarming spike in Blood Pressure among pregnant women. This is the cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell. Odonnell good evening. This is our western edition. Were going to begin with breaking news, a fourth crew member was rescued from the belly of a capsized ship off the coast of georgia. All four of them were found alive today trapped inside this massive cargo ship that flipped on its side yesterday and caught fire. The coast guard today cut into the side of the ship, and pulled the men to safety. All of the men are from south korea, and meg oliver is at the scene near brunswick, georgia, with more on this remarkable rescue operation. Reporter the dramatic rescues played out under the hot georgia sun. One, two, three. Reporter after more than 30 hours trapped inside the dark underbelly of the cargo ship with temperatures in triple digits, the coast guard began to pull the south korean crew members one by one. Captain, when you first discovered they were alive, what went through your mind . I was elated. When we found out that the tapping was coming back and they had it consistently throughout the night, those that made all the difference in the world. It made a huge difference in the grld to the team that was able to get out there and extract them. Reporter the first three crew members were pulled out quickly once they were found. The fourth, trapped behind glass with no food or water for more then a day, has proven to be most challenging to retrieve. Cameras caught him emerging from the hull. It all began early sunday morning off the georgia coast. The massive vessel, nearly two football fields in length, was carrying 4,200 vehicles when it began to list. 2e coast guard airlifted 20 crew members to safety before a fire stopped the effort. The rescue operation resumed today, plucking the men out of the darkness. I know they looked very happy to be out of that ship and into the daylight. Reporter i just got off the phone with the coast guard. They told me that fourth crew member was able to walk off the ship. Really good news. Its still unclear what caused the vessel to topple over. Norah, because of its sheer size and location, this is going to be a Monumental Task to upright and tow back to port. Odonnell what a story, meg. Thank you so much. The f. D. A. Tonight is accusing jewell, the nations top e cigarette company, of illegally marketing its vaping devices as safer than cigarettes. The f. D. A. Sent a warning letter to juul today ordering the company to stop making unproven slaims in its advertising. The f. D. A. Is threatening to fine juul and possibly seize its products. Lye company says it will fully cooperate and then this today, a tweet from the first lady, melania trump, who said shes concerned about the growing epidemic of ecigarette use in our children. Tonight were learning what went en behind the scenes of President Trumps planned and then called off secret peace talks with the taliban at camp david. They would have been held the week of the 18th anniversary of 9 11, which led to the u. S. Invasion of afghanistan. Bw, since then, there have been more than 2,400 American Military deaths. The u. S. Has spent two trillion dollars on the war. We have two reports tonight. Charlie dagata is in afghanistan. But well begin with Margaret Brennan tonight at the white house. Theyre dead. Theyre dead. As far as im concerned, theyre dead. De reporter President Trump isid it was his decision to plan td then call off the summit at almp david with the taliban, the Al QaedalinkedGroup Responsible for the deaths of thousands of american troops. It was my idea, and it was my odea to terminate it. Reporter mr. Trump remained vague on whether he will still cut the number of u. S. Troops in afghanistan from 14,000 down to 8,600. Wed like to get out, but well get out at the right time. Reporter on saturday mr. Trump claimed he ended the talks ollowing a kabul bombing two days prior that killed Sergeant First Class elis barreto, the bth u. S. Fatality this year, but a senior u. S. Official told cbs it was not that simple. T appeared the taliban negotiators did not have full control over their fighters and the president s advisers were at odds over whether a troop drawdown should happen with or without a negotiated deal. There was also confusion over whether the taliban had agreed to even attend the camp david meeting. That would have put the very same group that harbored Osama Bin Laden at the president ial retreat where u. S. Officials ffed the night of the 9 11 attacks. They should not be allowed not just in the United States of america, but they especially orouldnt be allowed in such a ouace of honor when you think about all the history of camp david and the role that that plays. Odonnell margaret joins us usw from the white house. And of course, many people want to know, what does this mean for our troops serving in aghanistan . Reporter well, norah, the maesident will have to make a decision on the size of the u. S. Presence in afghanistan. His National Security advisers oppose a full withdrawal because of the presence of al qaeda and isis, but keep in mind, we are going into the 18th year of this war. Every single democrat running for president wants to bring the oeoops home, and so does the president. Odonnell all right. That promise made by the president on the line. Margaret, thank you. The stalled peace talks could lead to disaster in afghanistan. Charlie dagata spoke to one of the countrys top leaders about whats next. gunfire reporter with taliban peace talks in tatters, afghanistan is now bracing for the backlash. The militant group had stepped up a Vicious Campaign of violence throughout the country, and that was during negotiations with the u. S. Afghan government officials have insisted washington should have demanded a ceasefire before any promise of a u. S. Troop drawdown. Abdullah abdullah is afghanistans chief executive. A complete withdrawal without any progress in the Peace Process or the negotiations and also a taliban violating the commitments that they are making, that will have a serious negative impact. Reporter it would be a disaster . It would be a very serious situation. Reporter such a serious situation that afghanistan could once again become a safe haven for International Terrorists as it was when the taliban supported al qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. The taliban says the u. S. Will have the most to lose from walking away now. The collapse of the talks comes at a critical time. President ial elections are due to be held here in just a few weeks. They have been a taliban target in the past, and now theres not much of an incentive to hold anything back. Norah . Odonnell all right. Charlie dagata, thank you. Today congress is back at work after a sixweek recess, and if anything, House Democrats have a bigger appetite to start impeachment proceedings. Nncy cordes is on capitol hill. I dont need to have somebody take a room overnight at a sitel. Reporter President Trumps properties are the latest focus of the impeachment inquiry after a slew of Government Spending at ngs resorts this summer. Were going to look at the money thats flowing in through the trump office tower, through the golf resorts, both in rerica and abroad. Em reporter maryland democrat jamie raskin sits on the house judiciary committee, which announced today it is formalizing its impeachment newbe with a new resolution establishing procedures for impeachmentrelated hearings, allowing lawmakers and Committee Staff to grill witnesses like former Trump Campaign manager corey lewandowski, who is set to testify next week. Republicans say this is proof that democrats are obsessed with impeachment. None of us is obsessed with impeachment. D are confronted unfortunately on a daily basis with the evidence of the high crimes and misdemeanors of the president. Reporter the white house called it a vendetta and more of the same from the democrats. Democratic support for an impeachment inquiry swelled orile congress was gone. 32 more House Democrats came out in favor, and an inquiry, nora, is the precursor to a formal impeachment proceeding. Something some of those democrats would like to pursue before the 2020 election. Odonnell looks like its going to be busy on capitol hill. Nancy, thank you. Odte today the president told reporters that victims of rirricane dorian in the bahamas will only be allowed to enter the u. S. If they have proper documentation. He said hes worried gang members could come in. Errol barnett is in the bahamas where the official death toll is 45 but expected to skyrocket. Reporter ready for the worst, teams on abaco island are searching through rubble. On grand bahama island, Nicole Pinder is closely watching as crews from miami and dade county search for the missing. As the days go on, she says the sikelihood of success is slipping away. This nowflattened seaside house is where seven of pinders relatives rode out dorian, including sixyearold omarion munnings, now missing. On this day they found nothing. Bahamian Officials Say the total number of missing may be unknown for weeks. Teams working through a flattened landscape, searching remote areas not reached since dorian hit a week ago. The building anxiety evident on efcial media. People hopeful for any news on reir loved ones. This post reads, if you see vito, tell him contact his mum, please. The United Nations says the storm left more than 70,000 homeless. Many bahamians say faith is all thats getting them by. Now, it would seem time is working against hope. This country is receiving usistance in search and recovery from the u. S. , u. K. , jamaica, and trinidad and tobago, but the harsh reality is human remains decompose quickly at sea, so many may remain missing, norah, forever. Odonnell that is so sartbreaking. Errol, thank you. Erck here at home, new accusations tonight that the Administration May have tried to pressure the National Weather service to change a Hurricane Dorian advisory to cover up a mistake by the president. Weijia jiang is traveling with the president in North Carolina. Weijia, what have you learned . Reporter well, norah, in an email to staff members, noaas top scientist said that he was investigating potential violations that may have compromised the agencys policy of scientific integrity. Craig mclean was reacting to a press release on friday that backed the claim by President Trump that Hurricane Dorian siuld hit alabama hard. After the president made those comments, the National Weather service in birmingham contradicted them in a tweet saying, alabama will not see any impacts from dorian. E unsigned noaa release said that tweet was wrong. This afternoon the Commerce Department said the statement was not sent because secretary rlbur ross threatened to have people at noaa fired, something they are denying altogether, and the director of the National WeatherService Today stood by the birmingham tweet saying it was sent out for one reason, public safety. Norah. Ij odonnell all right, weijia who is in North Carolina where the president is campaigning tonight for a special house election. Thank you, weijia. Now a cbs news exclusive. Three former heads of homeland hecurity addressed the biggest tscurity threats to this ununtry. Michael chertoff, janet napolitano, and jeh johnson gathered today at the National September 11th memorial and neseum in new york city. This all ahead of the anniversary of the attacks. They served under president s george w. Bush and barack obama and address the rising challenges facing this current administration. Its been 18 years since 9 11. Tre here at this very solemn memorial. Hre threat has changed dramatically. We face increasing homegrown threats. Whats happened . The terrorist threat to our homeland has evolved significantly over the last 18 years from what i refer to as terrorist directed attacks to smallerscale, terrorist inspired attacks, inspired either by a terrorist Group Overseas or by extreme right wing violent nationalism. In fact, that type of attack is now outpacing attacks inspired by foreign terrorist organizations. Y odonnell secretary johnson, how do you view the agency right now . I have to say, i view the agency with a fair amount of despair and dismay. I think our old agency has become overly politicized. It is overwhelmed with the immigration mission, which is itself overly politicized, very, very emotional. Odonnell secretary chertoff, the head of homeland security, the head of fema, all the agencies overseeing immigration have acting leaders, pet confirmed. How does that hamper or hurt our National Security . The reality is if you dont have a senate confirmation, youre living day to day, and pat affects not only your ability to plan strategically, but the way in which youre received by other agencies, other departments, and even other countries. Odonnell you all agree Climate Change is a big threat. Yes. Yes. Odonnell when people say, i dont understand, how does Climate Change affect homeland security, what are some real world examples . When youre talking about Global Warming as a whole, that affects migration patterns. That affects areas of the world where the agricultural economy has been lost, and therefore they are perhaps more ripe for the rise of terrorism, terrorist recruitment. So there are all kinds of downstream effects from Global Warming. Odonnell were now 14 months away from the next president ial election. How concerned are you that foreign governments are going to do everything they can to cause chaos . Very. Th the russians are the most blatant, but the chinese and the iranians play this game, too. The election may be 14 months away, but the campaign is now. And we are probably, as we roeak, suffering from the foreign influence on our democracy through pushing out extremist views and fake news. Odonnell they say thats happening now. Chertoff also said hes concerned about the use of deep fakes by our adversaries, those are these doctored video clips that appear and sound real. N cretary johnson said that use of those deep fakes may require all of us in the American Public to be more skeptical about what we see. Well have much more of this interview beginning on the anniversary of 9 11. It will be in our 24hour streaming channel, news channel, cbsn. Dr. Tara narula explains why women getting pregnant later in life contributes to this upward trend. Wa odonnell 31yearold Chanelle Bradley is pregnant with her second child and is hoping medication will control her high Blood Pressure. L were just going to induce early before i even get to that superhigh scary point. Reporter bradley developed hypertension during her first pregnancy, which caused her to deliver six weeks early. Todays study finds a huge spike in high Blood Pressure cases during pregnancy, increasing 13 fold over the past 40 years. Researchers defined high Blood Pressure as 140 90 or higher. African american women were twice as likely to have high Blood Pressure as whites. High Blood Pressure raises the risk of complications such as stroke, kidney failure, and stillborn or infant death. Dr. Amy stoddard of u. C. L. A. Health says age is a factor in the rising rate of hypertension during pregnancy. One of the main things we can attribute that to is older maternal age in pregnancy. Women are waiting longer to have their first baby. Odonnell so, dr. Tara nsrula joins us now. So, what can women do to make sure they have a healthy pregnancy . I cant emphasize enough the value of controlling Blood Pressure in the health of the mom and the health of the baby. Best first present you give your child. Hypertension complicates 10 to 15 of first pregnancies and is a leading cause of infant mortality. So, women should know their Blood Pressure and when theyre yady to get pregnant, they should speak to their doctor about how best to control their toood pressure, whether its with lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, stopping smoking or t,dication. Tod finally we know that pregnancy is a stress test, its a marker of cardiovascular risk, so what happens during pregnancy tells us a lot about your future. Odonnell thank you, doctor.
