We never got do this when it happened. Odonnell and tonight a cbs news exclusive, the first video of american troops inside saudi arabia gearing up for a potential conflict with iran. The is the cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell. Odonnell good evening. This is our western edition. There is a lot of breaking news to get to tonight. Weve got exclusive video of american troops in saudi arabia. But we want to begin here at home. That dangerous weather and were all in it together. 151 million of us, from the plains to the midwest to here in the east, all in the grips of severe heat. That is almost half of the entire u. S. Population under excessive heat watches or warnings tonight. And it is part of a trend. This map shows how the surface of the earth has been warming over the past four decades. This july may turn out to be the hottest month ever recorded. The heat today is blamed for at least two deaths, and that is where we begin with adriana diaz. Reporter 32yearold former new york giants lineman mike uetrus died after suffering an apparent heatstroke after working outside all day in the scorching arkansas heat. From new mexico in the west to iossachusetts in the east, the combination of heat and humidity made 90 degrees feel like 100 degrees or more. Children are also at greater risk. So far this year 21 children have died after being left in cars, a risk that rises with the trcury. Its never safe to leave a child in a car, even for a few minutes. Eittle ones are going to heat up haree to five times faster than an adult. Reporter chicagos lurie Childrens Hospital demonstrated how hot a car can get on a day like today. The temperature rose from 96 degrees to 126 degrees in just over half an hour. The soaring heat is especially dangerous for outdoor workers. The more i drink, it seems like the more i sweat. Its really hot out here, really humid. You guys coming in . I wish. Reporter across the country, people are seeking relief, from public pools to beaches. At the cincinnati zoo, water spewing fans became an e anaction. The heat is really on for city dwellers, even at night. Meteorologists call cities urban heat islands. And in this heat wave, 100 metro areas could have extreme high low temperatures at night. To try to keep the city cool, chicago has installed hundreds of green alleys like this one made with materials that absorb ouss heat than your typical black asphalt, like in this parking lot. More surfaces that reflect the suns heat could cool big cities by two degrees, but it will take more than that to reverse rising temperatures according to Gavin Schmidt of Nasas Goddard institute for space studies. He says Climate Change will make heat waves worse. In the last decade weve seen record after record be broken when it comes to heat waves. And this is a symptom of the fact that the planet as a whole is getting warmer. Reporter the heat will get worse this weekend before it lets up. And though it is normally cooler here by the lake, not today. The National Weather service told us that the heat is overpowering lake michigans cooling effect. Norah . Odonnell adriana diaz, thank you. More breaking news tonight, a plane crash in alaska. One person was killed late today when a plane carrying seven crashed in homer, alaska. A second person, an 11 year old boy, was critically injured. There have been a series of crashing involving float planes in alaska. Were now going to go overseas n that breaking news in the middle east. Tensions with iran were already running high after the u. S. Downed an iranian drone yesterday. Ten today iran seized two british tankers in the strait of hormuz. One was later released. Now, this comes as the u. S. Military buildup in the middle ist continues. S w night, news cameras captured exclusive video of u. S. Patriot air Defense Missile batteries being deployed in the Saudi Arabian desert. These were all manned by american troops. We have also learned that u. S. Central command has patrol aircraft monitoring the situation in the strait of hormuz. David martin is the only Network Correspondent traveling with the mp u. S. General in the middle east. Reporter Officials Say both ships were boarded by members of irans revolutionary guard in order to steam into iranian waters, hijackings on the high seas. And this only goes to show what im saying about iran trouble, nothing but trouble. Reporter news of the two hijackings broke just after President Trump had boasted of the u. S. Navys firepower and warned iran not to try anything. A we hope for their sake they dont do anything foolish. If they do, they will pay a price like nobody has ever paid anprice. Reporter the manager of the stena impero said the tanker was approached by unidentified small craft and a helicopter during transit of the strait of hormuz while the vessel was in international waters. We are presently unable to t ntact the vessel, which is headed north toward iran with zes crew of 23. The second ship seized is the british operated oil tanker mesdar. Yesterday iran released this video of small boats circling a e. A. E. Base tanker just before seizing it last sunday. Add that to an earlier unsuccessful attempt to seize a ritish tanker in the mining of six other tankers and iran has turned the strait of hormuz, through which 20 of the worlds oil passes, into a hazardous journey. U. S. Warships made that same journey yesterday under the eyes of iranian drones. Iran released some of that video today but denied the u. S. S. Boxer brought down one of those drones by electronically jamming its flight controls. Norah, that downing of the iranian drone was a minor incident, which might have gone unnoticed had not the president announced it. But seizing a british tanker, a ship operated by americas closest ally, is a major escalation of what is an alreadytense confrontation. Jo odonnell and david joins us tonight as he is traveling with the top u. S. Military commander for the middle east, general ieank mckenzie. And so david, what do you think the u. S. Is going to do about it . Reporter well, we happen to be in afghanistan right now where it is the middle of the night, but i can still see officers on his staff coming and going from meetings. What happens next is complicated by the fact that iran is now holding the crew hostage, but the u. S. Military is not taking this as just another case of iran causing trouble. Odonnell david martin, thu. T anmerican citizen is facing federal terrorism charges. Hes accused of working as an isis sniper and weapons trainer in syria. 42yearold Ruslan Asainov made his first appearance today in federal court in brooklyn. He was born in kazakhstan. Prosecutors say he joined isis in 2013 and tried to recruit others. U. S. Backed Syrian Rebels captured him and then they turned him into the f. B. I. Congresswoman ilhan omar went back to where she comes from, which is minnesota, and received a warm welcome. The somaliborn lawmaker returned to her district last night amid her feud with President Trump, who suggested that she and three other kongresswomen of color go back to the places from which they came. Dean reynolds spoke with voters in the battleground state. Reporter after first rejecting his ardent fans who mocked democratic congresswoman ilhan omar this week with chants of send her back, today the president embraced them. E those are incredible people. Those are incredible patriots. Reporter mr. Trumps about face on a sensitive issue was a bow to his base, enraged by omar, an immigrant from somalia who taunted the president as she arrived home in minneapolis last night. We are going to continue to be a nightmare for this president , because his policies are a nightmare to us. Reporter the president was not pleased. But im unhappy when a congresswoman goes and says, im going to be the president s nightmare. Shes lucky to be where she is. Reporter the incendiary back and forth deepened the feud with omar and three other democratic wongresswomen who favor impeachment. A lot of people say they hate our country. And i think its a disgrace. Reporter some of omars minnesota constituents are worried. Do you think there is any danger . Oh, absolutely. Y. re sitting in the cauldron here. Reporter we sampled opinion at a farmers market. Aat do you think of this fight between the congresswoman and eee president . Its ridiculous, my parents and their parents went through eil that. My kids shouldnt have to go through that. R reporter but one Congressional District over, it ris omar and her friends who are at fault. The rhetoric that these individuals are spewing, it is vile. It is hatred. It is venomous. I dont think those women reflect most peoples views. I think this is a great country. Reporter are you sorry to see her, omar, in congress . Absolutely. Reporter demonizing a muslim congresswoman from somalia may rrouse mr. Trumps anti immigrant base, possibly enough to win minnesota, a state he lost by fewer than 2 points almost three years ago. Norah . Odonnell dean reynolds, thank you. Freedom came today for more than 3,000 people. They were released from prison and Halfway Houses across the country under the First Step Act signed into law by the president last year. Mola lenghi has the story of one woman who is taking those precious first steps. This impacts my life dramatically. Im home with my family and my children. Os given me a head start on restoring my life and my childrens life. Reporter for nonviolent drug offenders like norah yahya, the new law is a new beginning, allowing some prisoners like her to be released early. It was just unreal to me. I was ecstatic about it. I was happy, and i was ready. Reporter yahya was 22 the first time she was sent to prison for her role in a marijuana dealing operation. Her daughter was just five years old. It was very challenging and a lot of the programs at that time werent geared towards release. E, reporter after she served b,r sentence, she went to college, got a job, then just swo years later, she relapsed and was sent back to prison for selling crack and powder cocaine. I just fell right back into the same stream of choices. I wanted telut i had no preparations upon release. Reporter the new law is also designed to help inmates transition back into society. The Largest Group of released inmates are drug offenders. I have done 18 years totally of my life in prison. Reporter youre trying to do better this time . Yes, absolutely. I want to live. Reporter well, a new law aims to address Racial Disparities in the system and it gives judges more discretion in sentencing. Still, advocates stress that inmates need even more resources to help them get back on their feet and transition into society. Norah . Odonnell mola lenghi, thank you very much. Its heartbreaking on a personal level because it says the most powerful person in the Snited States believes that many of us dont belong. Si if the president resorts to schoolyard taunts, then it seems to me that it gives free rein for anybody to go into those very same schoolyard taunts.
