The whole investigation a witch hunt. Glor and they once defended Michael Jackson. Now theyre trying to sue his estate. The lawsuit was about fighting back. Glor this is our western edition. Good evening. Im jeff glor reporting tonight from vietnam, where a Nuclear Summit with so many expectations broke down in a flash. The meeting between President Trump and north Koreas Kim Jongun began with smiles and anticipation. It ended early with limited explanations and a foggy future. Tonight, as both sides point fingers following a summit where nobody won, they also say all is not lost. We start with Margaret Brennan on what happened. As you know, im on my way back from vietnam. Reporter President Trump returned to u. S. Soil with little to show from his faceto face talks with north korean dictator kim jongun. He did not even address the failed diplomacy in brief remarks to troops at an alaskan air force base. Sometimes you have to walk, and this was just one of those times. Reporter before leaving hanoi, the president explained why the negotiations had been abruptly cut short. Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted, in their entirety, and we couldnt do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldnt give up all of the sanctions for that. Reporter the president said kims offer included dismantling the yongbyon complex, north koreas central facility for Nuclear Research and development in exchange for complete sanctions relief. But that still left other nuclear sites, warhead, and weapon systems in place. In a Rare Press Conference hours later, north koreas foreign minister ri yongho disputed that account, saying his country had only sought partial sanctions relief. He insisted it was north koreas most realistic offer and would not change. We just want to do the right deal. Reporter the day had begun on an optimistic note, but with no agreement in hand, a scheduled signing ceremony working lunch were scrapped. Now the two countries are basically at status quo. Mr. Trump agreed again to halt Major Military exercises in the region, and kim vowed to extend the pause on missile and nuclear tests. Despite the setback, President Trump stated he remained friendly with the north korean dictator. Theres a warmth that we have, and i hope that stays. I think it will. Reporter notably, the president is not escalating tension, instead leaving the door open to future talks. And its a disappointing outcome, but it is also a relief to some of the president s advisers, including National Security adviser john bolton, who were concerned about looking too eager for a deal. Glor much more on this on face the nation. Margaret, thank you very much. The president returns tonight facing new criticism over comments he made regarding Otto Warmbier, an american student who was severely injured while in north korean custody and died back home. The president said he believes kim jonguns explanation. Ben tracy has more on this. He tells me that he didnt know about it, and i will take him at his word. Reporter President Trump says kim jongun is not to blame for the death of 22yearold American College student Otto Warmbier. I dont believe that he would have allowed that to happen, just wasnt to his advantage to allow that to happen. Reporter the president s shocking comments sparked bipartisan outrage from lawmakers. Democrat Sherrod Brown i dont know how he says that he likes the dictator of north korea so much. Reporter and nikki haley, President Trumps former u. N. Ambassador tweeted, americans know the cruelty that was placed on Otto Warmbier by the north korean regime. The North Koreans sentenced warmbier to prison in early 2016 for allegedly stealing a poster from a hotel in pyongyang. When north korea finally released him 17 months later, he was in a comatose state and died just days after returning home to cincinnati. His family says he was brutally tortured, and sued north korea. We are trying to build a pathway that leads directly to kim and his regime to force them to be answerable for their actions. Reporter President Trump has sided with authoritarian rulers before, believing Vladimir Putins denials of russian interference in the 2016 election, over the conclusions of american intelligence agencies. And defending the saudi royal family after the recent murder of journalist jamal khashoggi. Now, Otto Warmbier would have been a highprofile prisoner in north korea because he was an american, and his capture was a Huge National and international story. Ive been to north korea three times, and kim jongun runs that place with an iron fist, and, jeff, no important decisions are made there without him knowing about it. Than very much. The body of a man who was swept away by a flood was found today in northern california. Farther south, in sonoma county, a river overflowed and cut off one town. Many were stranded, along with just one tv crew meg olivers. Reporter this is what local residents woke up to just after sunrise, one of the only roads out of here still completely submerged. By midday, the river had receded more than three feet, just enough to let a few vehicles in to tiny forestville after 36 hours of being cut off. 42 is on their way up. Reporter now emergency responders, fire captain michael francheschi among them, have to figure out if everyone is safe. How many people have you rescued . Yesterday, in the area of 40, probably. Reporter and today . Two on trenton road this morning. Reporter theres no telling how bad the damage will be in this long river valley that runs through a dozen towns from californias wine country to the pacific. At its worst, the Russian River flooded 13 feet above its banks, cresting at 45 feet. How much water flooded into your home . Into the basement, six or seven feet. Reporter andre rykoff chose noner dinshiunr ant toanatnecue bevaltran. E. Whats been the hardest part . I think just the feeling of being trapped and not having a connection to the other side. No way to call. Thats hard. Reporter for those who are okay now, theres the cleanup. All the silt that accumulates on your stairs, everywhere along inside your house, that will all need to be pressure washed off. So, its going to be a significant amount of work. Reporter the series of powerful storms has caused more than 35 counties in oregon and california to be declared disaster areas. And, jeff, more rain is in the forecast. Glor meg oliver stranded, but safe tonight. Meg, thank you. Today, two republican members of the House Oversight committee accused Michael Cohen of lying in his testimony yesterday. The president s former attorney wrapped up his third day on capitol hill. Heres paula reid. Reporter Michael Cohen spent eight hours answering questions behind closed doors. Theres not much i can say. Reporter lawmakers and federal prosecutors are still digesting his bombshell public testimony yesterday. In vietnam, President Trump blasted his former personal attorney. He lied a lot, but it was very interesting, because he didnt lie about one thing. He said, no collusion with the russian hoax. And i said, i wonder why he didnt just lie about that, too, like he did about Everything Else . Reporter cohen implicated the president and those around him in several crimes, including Campaign Finance violations and financial fraud. Every day, most of us knew we were coming in and we were going to lie for him on something. Reporter cohen also Gave Congress a road map for continuing its investigations. He was fully cooperative, and answered all of our questions. Reporter he said committees should interview Trump Organization c. F. O. Alan weisselberg, mr. Trumps own son, donald trump jr. And chairman of the National Enquirers publisher david pecker. Cohen also delivered documents like Financial Statements and a canceled check that could prove the president was aware of hush money payments to adult film star stormy daniels. Kim whalee is a former whitewater investigator. Documents dont lie. They dont misremember. They dont deny things. The facts speak for themselves based on the transactions and the documents themselves. Reporter today, republicans referred cohen to the justice department, accusing him of making false statements during his testimony. But next week, hell be back on capitol hill for more questioning. Jeff. Glor all right, paula, thanks. Israels attorney general said today he intends to indict israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu for corruption. This comes 40 days before netanyahus up for reelection. Seth doane has more on this. Reporter Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu fired back tonight, saying there was nothing to the charges, framing it as a political witch hunt. This house of cards will completely collapse, he said. It does have the makings of a Political Drama a sitting Prime Minister in power for a decade in the midst of a tight re election campaign, and accused in three separate cases offering bribes of regulatory benefits in exchange for favorable news coverage; allegedly trading legislation that would damage one newspaper for good press in another; and accepting gifts from a hollywood producer of cigars, champagne, and jewelry totaling more than a quarter of a Million Dollars for political favors. Netanyahu will have the chance to defend himself before the indictment is official. But, jeff, hes calling the timing of this announcement undemocratic as voters will hear the charges before the election but not the conclusion. Glor all right, seth, thank you. A delegation from china today went to indiana to claim hundreds of artifacts that were seized from one mans private museum. He had items from all over the world, including human bones. Anna werner reports. Reporter those chinese artifacts were some of the 5,000 seized from this home in rural indiana in 2014 from 90yearold don miller, a man well known locally for his passion for collecting and his global travels. When i first went into his house and saw the size of the collection, it was unlike anything wed ever seen. Reporter but tim carpenter, with the f. B. I. s art crime unit, says thousands of items had been illegally obtained, including precolumbian pottery, an italian mosaic, and something miller himself labeled chinese stone age weapons. Roughly half of the collection was native american and the other half of the collection was from every corner of the globe. Reporter and agents also found something disturbing about 2,000 human bones. Reporter 2,000 . To the best of our knowledge right now, those 2,000 bones represent about 500 human beings. Reporter nearly all of those human remains he says were dug up from ancient native american burial sites, similar to the ones in this film. Meticulous care must be exercised. We have to think about the context of who has been the target of grave robbing for centuries . Whose ancestors have been collected for hobby . Reporter archaeology professor holly cusackmcveigh has been working with the f. B. I. On the case. This comes down to racism. They arent digging white graves.
