And this is our western edition. The death of Jamal Khashoggi. We are going to begin here with the death of Jamal Khashoggi. A short time ago, just after 1 00 a. M. In saudi arabia, saudi state media reported the u. S. Based journalist khashoggi died from injuries he suffered, they say, in a fight inside the saudi consulate in istanbul, turkey. Saudi arabia also announced a wave of arrests and toplevel firings. Khashoggis disappearance earlier this month set off a diplomatic crisis, both in the middle east and in d. C. Holly williams tonight is in istanbul. She has followed this story from the very beginning. Holly, bring us up to date on what were learning at this hour. Reporter jeff, this is just an extraordinary aboutface on the part of the Saudi Arabian authorities. Its been 18 days since Jamal Khashoggi walked into the saudi consulate here in istanbul and then disappeared. And since then, the saudis havent just denied that they did anything to him or that they killed him theyve angrily denied it. Theyve called allegations that he was killed, baseless and lies. And now suddenly, they are acknowledging that he died he died inside the consulate. And that is a tacit acknowledgment, and i think quite a humiliating acknowledgment, that at least some saudi officials lied. Were also hearing from saudi state media that two very senior officials have been sacked, including the deputy head of intelligence, who is thought to have been very close to the Saudi Arabian crown prince, mohammed bin salman. And also, that 18 saudi nationals have been arrested and are in custody. I think its important to recognize, though, that the saudis are not saying that Jamal Khashoggi was murdered, as has been alleged in some reporting, and by some turkish officials. Theyre saying that he was killed in a fight. What they are not telling us is where his body is. Glor very critical distinction you point out there, holly. Thank you so much, as the story from saudi arabia continues to evolve this evening. Holly, once again, in istanbul y,r us. The mass of migrants then crammed onto this thin border bridge, chanting, yes, we can, only to be blocked by another n te on the mexican side, where riot Police Deployed pepper spray. Spanish language tv telemundo showed migrants panicking, jumping from the bridge to try to swim to mexico instead. They risked drowning over defeat. When asked why he wanted to jump, this 16yearold said, there are no jobs here. This is the latest in one of the largest caravans to make the journey. The last one was in the spring. President trump has threatened to close the southern u. S. Border, and mexico deployed 500 federal police to avert a crisis. Mexico says it will allow the few with proper paperwork in, and others can apply as refugees. U. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo addressed the issue in mexico city today. And they are about allowing crime to enter our country, with open borders. Reporter he even blamed the democrats for the caravan, while offering no evidence. People say there is a lot of money being passed around, so that this would normally hit just before election. But i happen to think its of great issue for the republicans.
