Im jeff glor in wrightsville beach, north carolina. Inrricane florence is closing in as the east coast tonight, ready to deliver what fema is calling a mike tyson punch, starting in just about 24 hours. Hurricane, tropical storm, and storm surge watches and warnings now cover 10 Million People from the carolinas to virginia. Deorence was downgraded today to a category three, high sustained winds 120 miles an hour. Morthe storm, more than 300 miles wide, is expected to pick up strength over the warm waters of the atlantic before making landfall. F have a team of correspondents in the hurricane zone where more than a million residents have been told to head to safer ground. As the Evacuation Orders throughout the region were about to take effect, we found doug gillstrap, who has ridden out every hurricane here for the last 30 years. Fran, bertha floyd all of them. Glor this could be the worst. It has the potential, yup. Glor he told us once his boat is secured as secure as anything can be in a storm like florence hes heading a few miles inland where as of now hes hoping for the best. If it comes ashore fourplus or five, im leaving. Glor florence is bearing down with such strength, forecasters say she may literally reshape the carolina coastline. Ill be headed to kenston a little later on today. Glor our day began in raleigh, north carolina, where we met governor roy cooper at the states Emergency Operations center. How worried are you right now . Im very concerned about this morm. Glor the governor wants to avoid a repeat of Hurricane Matthew two years ago which killed 26 north carolinians. Predictions are for florence to be a far more violent storm. Are you ready . Were ready. Were trying to get those last stragglers off of the barrier islands. Ma glor this is what many of the roads look like on north lrolina. Look at this, on the other side of the highway, its close to tumpertobumper traffic it often is in many of these spots. Just ahead of us, heading to the coast, hardly any vehicles. We found ronald bass gassing up, sta planning to stay put. The 81yearold barber closed his shop and is planning to hunker down at home with his arsabled 77yearold wife. I feel just as safe at home as i would at a shelter. Glor and just in the path where florence is expected to make landfall, gordon rettic, also a hurricane veteran believes he can wait out yet otother storm. So you have the names of all the hurricanes here, bertha since 93. Glor fran, bonnie, hugo. How much does this one scare you compared to the other ones . Well, weve had so many, i mean, im not scared. Glor youre not . No. Glor all right, so, helping us track the hurricane here tonight is meteorologist megan f aros of wbbm in chicago. It looks a little bit different bian chicago right now. Yeah, feels different. Glor it has been sunny most of the day today. Yes. Glor thats going to change quick. Talk about the track. Its deceptively nice right now, and because we have a cat3 likely headed right here over the course of the next 24 hours or so, so by 2 00 p. M. On friday, were looking at a gandfalling potentially along the carolina coastline, expecting it though, unfortunately, to begin to ride the coast southward. So thats the change. Each consecutive model run has added to that shift, unfortunately, and thats going to present a problem. Bl glor we keep hearing this expression storm of a prneration. Why do people say that . I think there are many reasons for that. First and foremost, we dont get cat 3, cat 4 storms aiming at the carolinas all that often. Also were looking at very heavy rainfall from this. So, yes, its going to be a wind event. Yes, its going to be a surge goent. Yet also looking at the potential of up to 30 inches of rainfall here on top of an area that cannot handle it. Glor which could then really reshape this coastline. Right. The surge could do that. When it comes inland were talking about the potential for 1315foot storm surge. Then that floods over this entire area, it wont look the same once it recedes back into ine ocean. Were looking at a major situation but a longer distance of the coastline. Glor because its going to sit there and churn. Yeah, its going to sit and spin and it will bring the. Onditions all the way to the South Carolina areas as well. Glor youll be with us all week. Thank you very much. Were going to talk more about e e surge now, especially here in north carolina, where its tpected to be so bad. David begnaud is in Carolina Beach. All residents must be off the island by 8 00 p. M. Reporter when we arrived on Carolina Beach, the Fire Department was sounding the alarm. E ey passed right by dolly whittingtons house, so we stopped by to see if she was evacuating. She is not. We have been in some other hurricanes. Were not trying to be heroic or anything like that. But we feel we have just as good a chance hire as we would in town. Reporter by in town she means wilmington, 13 miles away across the snows cut bridge, bridge, that will be shut down once winds reach 45 miles per hour. That will essentially leave esople like dolly cut off. Lu know theyre talking about ttentially a 13feet storm inrge. I do. Reporter that surge is predicted to hit Carolina Beach , fore, during, and after florence makes landfall, battering and inundating low lying homes with water. Rgorm surge occur when ocean shnds push water ashore. Its why Hanover County commissioner woody white is very concerned. As you know, most loss of life and threats to life are from the surge. Reporter back here on Carolina Beach, the Evacuation Order goes into effect at 8 00 p. M. Listen, its a crime here in errth carolina to not follow an Evacuation Order, but i asked dhe county executive a short time ago, the county commissioner, are you going to enforce the law . And he said, no, were not. Thats where miss dolly lives. She hasnt changed her mind. Shes still inside. T fact, i talked to her aiighbor and i said, are you going to stay, too . He said, yeah, i am. He said if it gets bad ill get my boat. A lot of people in this area are deciding to stay. Glor yeah, in some cases, david, some feel they cant leave. We heard from the man earlier reo is taking care of his ifsabled wife and doesnt feel he can get out and is trying to hunker down. David, thank you very much. The threat from florence extends , r inland, tonight. Fayetteville, north carolina, is two hours from the ocean, but it is still expecting as much as 20 inches of rain. And Demarco Morgan is there. Reporter sisters brie and ashlynn mcgee are starting to worry. E right now were not sure what to do. R reporter theyre expecting the worst because they lived this nightmare before. Two years ago, Hurricane Matthew inundated their neighborhood. Nearby, a small dam burst and tent floodwaters pouring in, and now florence is expected to mliver four months worth of rainfall in just three days. Lumberton is where matthew did its worst. The fear is lowlying areas, like this one, will be no match for florence. After matthew fayetville encouraged 600 residents in floodprone areas to apply for atderal relief programs that would elevate or buy out qualified home. More than 200 families applied, but fewer than 25 were approved for buyouts, according to the city. Al millers application was t nied last year. We got a letter saying, sorry, the money is not there. Reporter so you did everything you were supposed to do to find out the money is not there. The money did not come through. Reporter his property floods routinely and he blames Rapid Development upstream of the creek that runs behind his house. The water has nowhere to go. At this time, your home does tt meet the selection criteria rir inclusion. Reporter the mcgees were rejected, too, leaving their father to the fate of florence. The first thing is to make sure were safe. R reporter many of the residents we spoke with like dave say they are planning to move to the Higher Ground but the frustration continues. Jeff, remember the busted dam we showed you . Take a look at this. Two years later, nothing has year done to fix it. D glor wow. All right, Demarco Morgan, thank you. We are going to continue to monitor florence. Well have much more about it later in this broadcast. Now, to another developing orory. Cbs news today fired jeff fager, the executive producer of 60 tenutes, who had spent 36 years at the network. In less than a year now, three of the most powerful men in broadcasting, fager, cbs chairman and c. E. O. Leslie moonves; and cbs this morning cohost, charlie rose, all accused of Sexual Misconduct have either been fired or resigned. Jericka duncan has the latest on fager, including his controversial text message. Reporter jeff fager, the executive producer of the oldest mod mostsuccessful news stgazine program in history, 60 minutes, was fired from cbs news this afternoon. clock ticking in its more than 50 years on or, only two people have led roat broadcast. Fager succeeded the shows creator don hewitt in 2004. Fager also recently served as the chairman of the cbs news division. When we report it on sunday night and it has impact on monday morning, thats what you hope for. Reporter fager hired charlie rose for multiple roles in the network. In november, rose was terminated. This july, six female former cbs employees told the new yorker ucger would touch employees in ways that made them tacomfortable after drinking at office parties. 19 current and former employees said fager allowed harassment in the division. Fager vehemently denied all of those claims. Toger continued to come to work. On sunday, the new yorker ntported a new accuser said she felt compelled to speak because she simply cant believe fager is back there. The article described her as a woducer who was an intern at cbs in the early 2000s, who said that he groped her at a work rtrty. In response to that allegation, anger told cbs news, this is an outrageous claim and it didnt happen. It is wrong. Fagers departure comes days after cbs chairman and c. E. O. Leslie moonves resigned dollowing allegations of Sexual Assault and harassment. We caught up with cbs news president david rhodes today after he briefed the 60 minutes staff. I cant talk to you guys about this today. Reporter in a statement today, rhodes said, fagers issmissal is not directly related to the allegations that surfaced in press reports, which continue to be investigated independently. However, he violated company mitmcy and it is our commitment to uphold those policies. Through his attorney, fager told cbs news, they terminated my contract early because i sent a text message to one of our own cbs reporters demanding that she be fair in covering the story. My language was harsh. Cbs did not like it. I am that reporter. Since jeff fager publicly anferred to our exchange today, i want to be transparent about it. First, heres some background. Sunday evening, i reached out to fager for comment on the articles alleging he groped or atuched cbs employees at company parties. En addition to denying these charges fager said in a text to me, if you repeat these false accusations without any of your own reporting to back them up, you will be held responsible for harming me. He went on to say, be careful. E are are people who lost their jobs trying to harm me, and if you pass on these damaging msaims without your own reporting to back them up, that will become a serious problem. S 0 minutes will enter its 51st season under the leadership of executive editor bill owens while the search for a new executive producer begins. Jeff. Glor jericka, you and i have talked about how incredibly difficult covering this story has been for you. You have been on this since the beginning. You have done great work. Its difficult enough without dealing with this. That message was unacceptable. I think its important for you to know, for everyone to know back there that i, we, the entire team at evening news supports you 100 . So, jericka, thank you. Reporter thank you. Glor the f. D. A. Commissioner Scott Gottlieb is stepping up the pressure telling 0 ve companies they have 60 days to submit plans to keep e esgarettes out of teens hands or face the possibility of the f. D. A. Pulling flavored products, which experts say appeal to teens, off the market. Im deeply disturbed by what y see as an epidemic of nicotine use by teenagers. Reporter the most popular product by far, the juul e cigarette. Critics say an earlier Marketing Campaign that featured young people in groups with bright colors echoed past campaigns by teg Tobacco Companies. In an interview earlier this year, juul executive ashley gould denied it. I will take the criticism that we should have known. I will take that criticism. But we now know, are working very hard and we are committed. Reporter data shows juul e cigarettes hold over 72 of the market. Matt mires for the campaign for tobaccofree kids is skeptical that purely voluntary efforts by the industry will work. F. D. A. s announcement has the potential to be a dramatic sea change, but only if the f. D. A. Thllows it up with mandatory rules to require Tobacco Companies to fundamentally change how theyre operating. Reporter juul says tonight it will work proactively with f. D. A. In response to its request and is committed to preventing underaged use of its products. Went out now it 6 00, a test of snohomish countys new Emergency Alert system and getting mixed results. Some of the warnings went out to people in foreign countries. Many people had little to no warning to get out of their neighborhoods last year. Getting a full functional wireless alert system in place is extremely complicated. Reporter not as easy as you might think. Im sitting here with a cell phone that can map my location at any given minute so its easy for people to assume and all an Emergency Alert can find me at any given moment. While we may be able to make that leap its clear that the technology necessarily cannot. Technology at best is unreliable. That is eagerly easily one of the biggest takeaways of the wireless alert system. Thats the alert that people in five specific locations were supposed to get on their cell phones. Whether they had signed up or not. This is a test message from sonoma county. They were all targeted but the results were mixed. Unfortunately the news i had to share is that what i have been hearing from mike stitcher wins is that they did not actually receive the cell phone notification. There was also significant spillover where people outside of those areas got an alert. It showed people even as far away as japan got an alert
