Im jeff glor, and this is our western edition. We are going to begin tonight and continue at the Mexican Border where we are seeing the impact of the current administrations zero tolerance policy for illegal immigration. It means that adults coming into the u. S. Illegally are being criminally prosecuted and children coming with them can be taken away, at least temporarily. The images of children being separated from parents and parents being held in large locked cages has produced widespread reaction, including disapproval from four former first ladies and the current one. In a cbs news poll out tonight, 67 of americans call separating kids from parents unacceptable. That includes 90 of democrats. Republicans are split on the issue. 39 find it unacceptable. 36 acceptable. Attorney general Jeff Sessions who ordered the crackdown says he simply is enforcing Immigration Laws. Those laws do not require the separation of children and parents. It is being enforced differently now. Over five weeks, more than 2,300 children have been taken from their parents. Critics contend its being done as a deterrent to illegal immigration and to Pressure Congress to overhaul Immigration Laws. Late today, Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen denied that. The children are not being used as a pawn. We are trying to protect the children, which is why im asking congress to act. Glor we have extensive coverage of this issue tonight from washington and all along the border. Gayle king begins our coverage in mcallen, texas. Gayle . Reporter jeff, there is so much to discuss here. Immigration, as you know, and how to fix it, is a very complicated issue, but americans su every side of it have been troubled by the images that theyre seeing on their tv screens. Immigrant children and their parents being held separately. Its striking that all the first ladies, as you point out all of the mothers are speaking est so strongly against the policy. We have talked to Law Enforcement officers here. Many of them have children, too, and they tell us, listen, we dont make the Immigration Laws, but it is our job to enforce them. Weve also been talking to people, many of them came to the United States fleeing violence and oppression in central america. Well have more of their stories later on in this broadcast, but havet and right now, my blleague David Begnaud got a look inside one of the facilities and tells us what he saw and what he heard. He reporter this is the video the government gave us to show you. We were given 15 minutes to write down what we saw. We couldnt bring our cameras. Men, women, and children are kept in large, fencedin cages. They are segregated according to how they crossed the border. Were talking about very, very high numbers. Reporter manuel padilla, jr. Is chief of the Rio Grande ValleyBorder Patrol sector. Its not just a simple issue of separating the families. We have to look at at this without emotion and objectively, ded at the end of the day we have to do something about the current Immigration Law that has atny loopholes. Reporter has illegal immigration gotten so bad that separating families is the best way to deter people from coming illegally . That is one of the only options. Reporter the process is complex with many variables, but generally, under the zero tolerance approach, after parents are subject to criminal proceedings, minors are reclassified as unaccompanied alien children. 72 hours is the maximum holding time, until they are placed in one of approximately 100 shelters. The goal is placement with a Family Member who is already living in the u. S. If a parent seeking a claim of asylum is denied, the policy is for them to be reunited with their child, but that process can take weeks. We wanted to know what the people of mcallen think about whats happening. Whether you like him or not, trump at least is trying to do r mething to secure our country. Reporter this is rudy cisneros, a mexicanamerican army veteran. And again, not taking away with what these kids are going through, and i understand people want a better life, but there is beprocess and theres a way. And we are a nation of laws. Ive seen them before. Reporter you might think Belinda Garcia would support the president s policies. She lives a quarter mile from the Rio Grande River where migrants swim across and then run through her backyard. She says her fence is bent because of it, yet she doesnt support the zero tolerance cylicy of prosecuting every person who enters illegally, and she doesnt want to see families separated. I dont think they should be prosecuted just because theyre crossing the border. Reporter miss garcia said she doesnt even support the president s border wall, and ehat was so interesting, gayle, because shes got a personal stake in this. Theyre running through her r ckyard. Reporter yeah, that answer surprises me. But, david, i got a couple of e uples from viewers who took exception to you characterizing y as cages. Do you have anything to say about that . Reporter 15 minutes ago i got a call from an official here, who said, i just hate that you used the word cages, but she didnt say it was inaccurate. People may not like it, but its a fact. And its a reminder that on both sides of this issue, theres a lot of emotion. Reporter its hard to describe it as anything but cages when you look at it. But, thank you very much. You always paint such a picture. Thank you, david. Yoreya villarreal spent much of this day with immigrants on the mexican side of the border, s ping to make it to america. She tells us many of them can expect to be turned away. Reporter this is a hidden haven for immigrants trying to cross into the u. S. Or who have been deported. Its known as Casa Migrante and its just across the u. S. Border, along the outskirts of ciudad juarez. This mexican woman says she lost igr husband, son, and his family to cartel violence. She wants to live in the u. S. , but shes afraid to cross with her granddaughter. Youre scared that theyre going to separate you. speaking spanish thats the reason why you are eot crossing, you are scared. Maria covernali runs a group that tries to help undocumented immigrants. She says the Trump Administrations new zero tolerance policy is changing the advice she gives them. What im trying to do is like hell you that tell the people, thont go, because theyre going to take away your kids. Reporter as a mother, how hard it is for you to listen to these stories of separation . Oh, if they would do that to me, i would die. Reporter despite the risks, some like this woman from honduras, who says shes fleeing the drug cartels, make the decision to cross into the u. S. Y. Yway. If you cant cross at the aidge, what are you going to do . speaking spanish youre going to try and cross illegally. Th1 people are turned away from the southwest border every day. The people that i spoke with, though, in these shelters, didnt even know they could ask for asylum, but they do know who President Trump is, and they know hes not backing down. Reporter all right. Thats right, mireya. He is not backing down. Thank you very much. Well be back with more from the border a little bit later on in the broadcast, but right now lets go back to jeff glor in new york. Jeff . Glor gayle, thank you very lch. We look forward to it. We will see you again soon. President trump has said repeatedly, dont blame him for separating families. He says laws need to change. Major garrett is at the white house with more on this. The United States will not be a migrant camp. Reporter President Trump blamed Congressional Democrats again today for his administrations family separation policy. If the democrats would sit down instead of obstructing, we could have something done very quickly. Reporter but he was the administration that instituted the socalled zerotolerance policy of prosecuting any adult who crosses the border illegally and then separating them from their children or accompanied minors. We have to do our job. We will not apologize for doing for our job. Reporter Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. These minors are very well taken care of. Dont believe the press. Reporter the backlash against the Trump Administration policy has been bipartisan. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi toured a detention facility near san diego. Do they think these children deserve less than their children do . Reporter Louisiana Republican senator john kennedy called the situation a hot tss. I dont have any problem whatsoever allowing children of those who were coming in illegally to stay with their parents. Reporter and four former first ladies also weighed in, led by laura bush, who wrote in y Washington Post oped, this zerotolerance policy is cruel, it is immoral, and it breaks my heart. Michelle obama tweeted the article writing, sometimes truth transcends party. Hillary clinton spoke out in new york. Separating families is not mandated by law at all. That is an outright lie. Reporter even the current first lady, melania trump, released a statement that said te hates to see children separated from their families. She added that the u. S. Must be acountry that follows all laws, but also a country that irverns with heart. On i share their concerns. But congress is the one that needs to fix this. Reporter is this policy by your definition in any way cruel . Its not a policy. Our policy at d. H. S. Is to do what were sworn to do, which is to enforce the law. Glor all right major, you just left that briefing with secretary nielsen. Se, she says that only congress can fix this. Are they planning to take any action anytime soon . Reporter jeff, there are plenty of pieces of legislation being introduced in the basic crisis atmosphere that many lawmakers see. Several of them republicans, describing themselves as horrified, describing the situation on the border as tragic. But unless this administration and the Republicanled Congress can get together and overcome a possible filibuster in the elnate, those pieces of legislation are not likely to move anytime soon. Glor Major Garrett at the white house. Major, thanks. You may have heard theres been a huge spike in arrests of people trying to enter the u. S. Illegally. That is true. More than 50,000 were apprehended last month compared the fewer than 20,000 one year earlier. That is because crossings and arrests dropped dramatically in the first year of the Trump Administration. Cley are now more closely back in line with the five years before that. Reporter President Trump outlined a plan today to ensure americas dominance in space, he said. Which, after that, it is controlled by a small team of airmen from a base in colorado. They wear air force uniforms, but today, President Trump decreed in the future they will become members of a separate space force. Im hereby directing the department of defense and pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces. Thats a big statement. Reporter it would be the first new branch of the armed forces since the air force was created in 1947. Less than a year ago, secretary mattis told congress, i do not wish to add a separate service that would bring with it a whole new bureaucracy. But proponents of the space d rce argue the air force is too devoted to fighters and bombers to give space the attention and the money it deserves. Both sides agree u. S. Satellites rue threatened by russian and chinese antisatellite weapons. This air force graphic shows the t,bris from a 2007 chinese test, of which they shot down one of akeir own weather satellites. That test is now seen as a wake up call to the vulnerability of american satellites. The president s announcement caught most senior officials by surprise. The space force would be the smallest of the armed services, but before it becomes a reality, it will have to be approved by congress. Jeff . Glor fascinating issue with much more to come.
