O yea, o yea, cbs news are on their way. This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor this is our western edition. Were going to begin tonight in california, where Police Believe they have solved one of the nations enduring mysteries. They announced an arrest in the case of the golden state killer, who terrorized the state in the 70s and 80s. The suspect is a former cop. Heres john blackstone. Reporter Law Enforcement officials from across california gathered for the announcement that after more than 40 years, they had found the golden state killer. Yesterday afternoon, my detectives arrested joseph james deangelo, 72 years old, living in Citrus Heights. Reporter he is suspected of more than 50 rapes and 12 murders between 1976 and 1986. At the beginning of his spree, anne marie schubert, now sacramentos district attorney, ngs 12 years old. It wasnt a matter of if he was coming again, it was just when. It scared everybody to death. I remember very distinctly that some folks called him the boogeyman. Reporter deangelo, a former Police Officer, would allegedly gain entry to the homes of his victims by prying open a window or door while they were sleeping. Police say they started focusing on him within the last six days, after decades of work by Law Enforcement detectives and civilian tips finally led to a breakthrough that, for now, scficials will only describe as sophisticated d. N. A. It was through advanced technology that ultimately led us, through that dogged determination, to find the avenues of who it might be. Reporter jane carsonsandler was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in 1976, allegedly by deangelo. 6 30 in the morning, my husband had just left for work. My threeyearold son came and snuggled in bed with me. And within a minute, i heard running down the hall and i yelled out to my husband, what did you forget . And, it wasnt my husband. As soon as i screamed, he said, shut up or ill kill you. Reporter she was rape victim number five. Im so glad its over. To finally after all this time know that hes behind bars, and thats where he belongs. Glor unreal details. John blackstone is in sacramento tonight. John, when these crimes took place, d. N. A. Evidence was unknown. How did that become the key to solving all of this . Reporter jeff, crime scene samples that had been stored for years provided d. N. A. Back in 2000 that linked many of these crimes to the same person. The final connection was made here at this crime lab in sacramento in just the past week, matching the suspects d. N. A. That investigators collected in a way theyre still not revealing. Jeff . Glor john blackstone, thank you. White house physician Ronny Jackson is denying the latest allegations against him, and the admiral is pressing ahead with his nomination to head the department of veterans affairs. The president is standing behind him. Heres ed okeefe. Were seeing a pattern here. Reporter the top democrat on the Senate VeteransAffairs Committee said his office had received complaints about dr. Ronny jackson from 23 current and former colleagues. Weve got military people who came to me and said, weve got a problem here. And we have to follow up on that as the senate. Reporter the unverified allegations are outlined in a twopage document released by Committee Democrats this xaternoon. They include examples of jackson creating a hostile work environment. Accusations of excessive drinking, including one instance where he wrecked a government vehicle. Jackson directly denied that. And, improperly dispensing medications, like the sleep aid ambien and the opioid percocet. Tester said that earned him the nickname candy man from white house staff. Thats absolutely unfair of them to drop the candyman line. Dr. Jacksons record as a white house physician has been impeccable. Reporter white house officials today strongly defended jackson. Press secretary Sarah Sanders noted he had been the subject of four background checks. Because dr. Jackson has herked within arms reach of three president s, he has received more vetting than most nominees. Im looking forward to getting back on track. Reporter jackson has been equally defiant. He told President Trump he wants the opportunity to defend himself at a confirmation anaring. This morning, Republican Committee chairman Johnny Isakson promised just that. So im going to make sure we have an open, fair hearing for the american people. Reporter but republicans are divided over exactly how to proceed. When i asked one senior republican senator earlier, whats the level of patience among his g. O. P. Colleagues for all this drama, jeff, he said its very thin. Glor all right. Ed okeefe continuing his reporting on this story. Thank you. Were going to go to Major Garrett now at the white house. So major, how much did the white house know about these allegations before, and whats your sense of what theyll do now . Reporter well, not nearly enough to prepare for this battle, jeff. The white house knew there were general concerns that were likely to be raised about a Workplace Environment that might have been too hostile, and in fact, ran questions about that past jackson through no fewer than four confirmation hearing prep sessions. But the white house says it was blindsided by these accusations of either the excessive drinking or the toofreely dispensing of prescription drugs, and other issues. Yesterday in the oval office, jackson met with President Trump, said there was nothing disqualifying in his background, and he wanted a chance to clear his name. President trump said he would back him up. As ed just reported, the white house is demanding the Republicanled Senate provide that confirmation hearing so jackson can answer these charges in a public space. But officials here acknowledge that this process may prove too brutal, and jacksons path to confirmation so uncertain, he may yet withdraw. Glor all right, so major, we are also just now getting some breaking news, and some big news, about the iran deal. What is that . Reporter french president macron met with handful of reporters here in washington, among them our margaret brennan. He said he fears and believes President Trump will pull out of the iran nuclear deal. In anticipation of that, macron said after leaving the united states, he will telephone iranian president Hassan Rouhani and seek another round of diplomacy and possible negotiations. Glor all right, Major Garrett for us at the white house. Major, thanks. The Supreme Court today gave indications it agrees that auesident trump has the authority to ban travelers from a number of countries, including some majority muslim countries, m cohe name of national security. Lower courts had previously struck down versions of this ban. Jan crawford is following this story. Reporter the court signaled today it would uphold President Trumps travel ban, with the conservative majority suggesting it does not illegally target muslims. Justice samuel alito it does not look at all like a muslim ban. There are other justifications that jump out as to why these particular countries were put on the list. Reporter the ban lists five mostly muslim countries, as well as north korea and venezuela, that the Administration Says lack proper screening and security measures for people trying to enter the u. S. Its been enforced since last december, when the Supreme Court said it could take effect while the justices considered the case. Let them out let them out reporter its a long way from the president s first travel ban in 2017, which covered only muslim countries and, when it was hastily announced, caused chaos at airports around the world. At least three of the courts liberals indicated they think even the current ban goes too far, especially in light of mr. Trumps statements about muslims during the campaign. Donald j. Trump is calling ngr a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. Reporter solicitor general Noel Francisco argued that what mr. Trump said as a private citizen before taking the oath of office is irrelevant, but Justice Elena kagan suggested a different view of a president s past statements. The question is not really what his heart of hearts is. The question is, what are reasonable observers to think . To right. Glor jan, the president did tone down the rhetoric after the election. How did that play in court today . Reporter well, i mean, jeff, the governments lawyer specifically pointed out that since taking office, President Trump has declared this was not intended to target muslims, and he went on to say that it doesnt apply to the vast majority of muslim countries. A decision is expected in june. Jeff . Glor jan crawford, outside the Supreme Court. Jan, thank you. Reporter comedian Hari Kondabalu tackled the controversy in his 2017 documentary, the problem with apu. I never heard anyone say they liked apu because he exposed the idiocy and bigotry of americans, and the struggles of the average immigrant. Reporter earlier this month, the simpsons addressed it. Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do . Reporter according to azaria, the show could do more. Im perfectly willing and happy to step aside, or help transition it into something new. It not only makes sense, but it just feels like the right thing to do to me. Reporter but the shows creators still havent determined what to do with apu. Some things will be dealt with at a later date. If at all. Reporter we reached out to the simpsons executive producer, who declined to comment. Azaria believes the change will come when the show hires an indianamerican writer to redefine the character.
