A climber fell several hundred feet in treachuous conditions today at the most visited peak in the u. S. Fellow climbers were seen performing c. P. R. Another waved to a rescue chopper. Shortly after, a rescuer was lowered to the surface and the injured climber was airlifted to the hospital, but a number of hikers remain stuck on the mountain with more rough weather expected overnight. Amy frazier of kointv, our cbs portland affiliate, is at mt. Hood. Reporter weve just learned that one of the climbers has died, despite the extensive efforts you just saw, to revive him. Seven climbers remain trapped here on mt. Hood, about 40 rescuers are trying to get to them, and its a race against time. Scaling the hogsback trail, the first climber was close to the 11,000foot summit of oregons toughest and highest peak when he plunged nearly 700 feet down the icy mountainside. Other climbers on the trail immediately began signaling for nglp with emergency blankets cile performing c. P. R. On the downed climber for almost two hours. Cports said they were trapped a treacherous conditions as searchandrescue teams frantically tried to reach them. Within minutes, a second group of four climbers got stranded on the exact same trail, surrounded by falling ice and rock. The Oregon National guard was able to maneuver a black hawk chopper over the steep terrain to save the most seriously injured climber, but the second crew may remain trapped overnight. Clackamas sheriff brian jenson at 1 00 a. M. , the weather is supposed to turn south here rain, snow, winds. Trre trying to do everything we afelto get everyone down safely before that weather hits us. Reporter more than 10,000 climbers attempt to climb mt. Hood every year, and in warm weather, it is notorious for loosefalling rocks. It has been clear and sunny every day this week. Late this afternoon, rescuers reached the area where the stranded climbers are at. Theyre trying to get them off the mountain within the next few hours. And we are following another developing story tonight, this one in chicago, where a veteran Police Officer has been shot to death. Commander paul bauer, 31 years on the force, was off duty this afternoon when he joined officers trying to apprehend a fleeing suspect. That suspect is in custody tonight. Superintendent Eddie Johnson oke for the chicago p. D. I just ask citizens of this city to keep the bauer family in their prayers. Ive been meeting with his wife and daughter. S,s a difficult day for us, but we will get through it. But, again, i just ask the entire city for your thoughts and prayers. Glor commander bauer was 53 s ars old. Nt is the 16th Police Officer in this country killed in the line of duty this year. We move now to the case of rob porter, forced to step down as the president s staff secretary, after two former wives accused him of abuse. The f. B. I. And the white house are giving conflicting accounts of the status of the investigation tonight, and chip reid has more on this. E we administratively closed the file in january. Reporter on capitol hill today, f. B. I. Director Christopher Wray said the k onaus background check on former white house aide rob porter had been completed last month. That appeared to contradict the white house claim that the investigation into allegations that porter abused both of his exwives was still ongoing. The f. B. I. Portion was closed. Reporter but press secretary inrah sanders insisted the white house portion of the investigation was still active. The white house personnel security office, who is the one that makes a recommendation for adjudication, had not finished their process and, therefore, not made a recommendation to the white house. Reporter in an interview with the wall street journal, chief of staff john kelly was asked if the white house should have handled porters situation any differently. Kelly said, no. It was all done right. Despite that, the white house remains on the defensive, a week after the story broke. Mr. President , do you have a message to Domestic Violence victims . Thank you. Elections and 01w with critical elections coming up in november and control of congress at stake, officials warn today he is at it again. Homeland security correspondent jeff pegues has more on this. Reporter well, it was a blunt message from the director of National Intelligence who warned that russia will use propaganda, spread false information, and carry out Cyber Attacks ahead of the november election to stir up divisions in the u. We need to inform the American Public that this is real, that this is going to be happening, and the resilience needed for to us stand up and say were not going to allow some russian to tell us how to vote, how we ought to run our country. Reporter in 2016, the Russian Hackers targeted voter systems in at least 21 states, but there is still no coordinated National Strategy to counter similar Russian Operations this year. Im allen martin. 19yearold Lizette Cuesta was left for dead stabbed on a rural road. Kpix5s Juliette Goodrich just spoke with her father. Reporter were in tracy and this is where lizette lived and ray cuesta lives here and he is processing all of this going on now. It was a very raw interview. He says he is devastated. I spoke with her father and also her two uncles and as they try to process this, they also are so thankful for the Good Samaritan who stopped to help her along the way when she was fighting for her life and her father told me hes not surprised that she was a fighter. When you hear detectives say that your daughter was a true fighter to the very end, when you hear that, what do you think . Im proud of her. You know, she showed them she didnt give up, you know. She won. I know she passed away, but when they did this to her, they figured they got away with it. She didnt let them get away with it. She brought peace to herself and she brought peace to me and my family. I love her. We will always remember her for that, you know, being a fighter, that like my brother said, peace, just fighting for her life and then she was able to describe and tell the authorities who did it and that goes a long way because otherwise we wouldnt know what happened.
